$110 million. now, that game drew 23 million viewers, making it the most streamed u.s. event ever. the journal says amazon had a clause as part of its deal to stream thursday night football, allowing it to claim next year's playoff game. and a win by the chiefs in the super bowl may not be good news for investors if you believe the so-called super bowl indicator. it says the market will rise for the year if the winning team was never part of the original american football league, which is now the afc, or was in the nfl prior to its merger with the afl in 1966. but the indicator's track record is actually worse than a coin flip. the markets have historically performed better when the indicator is bearish, up 82% of the time for an average gain of 11%. with your cnbc morning business report, i'm silvana hanao. right now at 6:00, dense fog
6:01 am
blanketing parts of the bay area. we're tracking how long it will impact your morning commute and the return of rain by midweek. finally reopening. we'll give you a look in the south bay where at this moment a busy roadway is reopening in both directions following a devastating christmas day fire. what we've been through the last year hasn't been easy, and for it to go like that, it's close at the end, it's tough. i'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. >> players and fans reeling after the niners painful super bowl loss. reaction from the team and fans here in the bay area. this is "today in the bay." it depends on how you look at it. good morning. i'm marcus washington. >> we lost, what do you mean? >> we are here. there's something to be joyful about. >> we had nice weather this weekend, right? >> yeah. the bright side.
6:02 am
we have a couple more days of sunshine in our forecast. it just starts out cold. take a look at our temperatures and what we're starting with, mid to upper 30s in the tri-valley from livermore to dublin. we're at 38 in napa. martinez, 46 degrees. 47 in san francisco and in san jose. so after this cool start with the dense fog, we'll eventually see this clearing out. but we have to deal with this through the morning commute. zero visibility in novato, and in concord it is clear for now. we'll see more clouds mixing in with sunshine today and temperatures going from the mid-40s to about 60 degrees for today. mike, you found a second crash in walnut creek. >> yeah, indeed, that was one of the reasons why traffic was so light where we saw the first crash at the 680/24 split. the next one is at the on-ramp as folks are getting onto the freeway. you do see traffic slowing approaching the crash.
6:03 am
a big distraction. no major injuries, but we have at least one lane blocked and it does sound like there's a motorcycle involved. we will track this crash as we look at the rest of the roadways. there's slowing on that one section of southbound 680, the rest of the portion of the bay, contra costa county, is all right. the bay bridge toll plaza is full, of course the metering lights are on. back to you. >> getting busy. thank you very much. we begin with a swarm of earthquakes overnight in southern california. the shaking all centered in the same general location of el centro, near the mexico border. the initial 4.8 quake struck at about 12:30 this morning. the aftershocks have ranged from a 2.5 to 4.5. the most recent, a 3.0 at around 3:30 this morning. so far, there are no reports of damage. some relief for south bay drivers as a busy stretch of roadway closed for weeks is back open. we want to give you a live look in los altos along el camino
6:04 am
real near north san antonio road, part of which has been closed ever since that christmas day fire. all eastbound lanes were just reopened moments ago. crews are still on the scene. for now, bike lanes and the sidewalk will remain closed. the fire tore through a strip mall that has since been demolished. no one was injured and firefighters have still not revealed if they know what caused the fire. this headline in today's "chronicle" pretty much sums it up, loss vegas. a photo of chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes celebrating in the end zone after the chiefs' overtime touchdown. some things you would rather just stay in vegas. it will be a painful memory for the 49ers faithful. >> this will probably be hard for the faithful to accept, but for the nfl it will down as a classic. >> nbc bay area's raj mathai was in las vegas all week. he takes a closer look at what, for now, is a hard loss to fathom.
6:05 am
>> reporter: hello from las vegas. it is monday, and we know the whole routine, monday morning quarterback, what did the niners do wrong, why didn't they win. we have months to answer those types of questions. let me tell you what the niners did last night. they left allegiant stadium and went to a party not to celebrate a win, but to celebrate their families and the journey to get to this point. they were the second best team in the nfl. let's take you inside the stadium in the locker room right after the game. you could hear a pin drop. the niners were built to win the super bowl, but they didn't. christian mccaffrey sat at his locker staring ahead for about 20 minutes. outside the locker room, more tears, hugs. the owner, john york, his son really just consoling friends and family. it wasn't supposed to be this way. the niners had royalty in the house, joe montana was here and all the other a-list celebs, usher, getting rave reviews for the halftime show, and the list goes on of vips we saw. post malone, gwen stefani,
6:06 am
lebron james, lady gaga, the whole nine yards. it came down to that overtime drive and patrick mahomes is a lot like tom brady and joe montana, the guy is a legend, when you want to win a game with a minute left, he's the guy. he drives the chiefs down the field and that's the game winner. final score, chiefs win 25-22. the 49ers have now lost three straight super bowls that they've appeared in, so it's going to be a tough pill to swallow, how to get better, how to get over this hump for this team. that's going to be it. wrapping up a week here in las vegas, i'm raj mathai. back to you. >> job well done. thank you. of course the niners fans were gathering for parties everywhere across the bay area. one of the biggest was thrive city outside of chase center. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez, biting her nails in overtime along with the rest of us. >> i like my nails short but not this short. still wearing red because there's no shame in their game.
6:07 am
the san francisco 49ers didn't lose the super bowl in my opinion, as much as the kansas city chiefs just kind of won it in those final moments. they had a little more experience there. the niners fans in the stands at allegiant stadium had extra reason to be bummed because they shelled out hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars to watch the game in person. in the end, the 49er faithful are still faithful. >> we played a really great game, but, hey, you win some and you lose some. >> i'm still a niners fan today, until the end. we'll get them next year. >> reporter: that second fan watched at thrive city outside the chase center where people celebrated the niners lead with just two minutes left. nbc bay area sky ranger was about six miles away in the mission where there was a install crowd gathered as well. in the south bay, proof that a niners winning season is really a win for the local economy as well. thousands of fans watched at a party at san pedro social in san

jose. i don't have to tell you, it's been 29 years since the niners won a super bowl. they've been, but always the bridesmaid. arm chair quarterbacks are going to do what they do. the 49er faithful is going to do what they do, wait for the next season. >> all that red and gold, just put it in the closet. >> i'm in mourning, wearing black. >> thanks, kris. 6:07 this morning. let's take a live look outside in san francisco. is it because of the super bowl, the gloomy start? >> it's monday. actually, we're coming off a fantastic weekend, though. >> wasn't the weather nice? >> it was gorgeous. >> we had sunshine. it was cold in the mornings, then once we got to the afternoon, it felt pretty good. we do have a cold start again this morning. in dublin it is 36 degrees and 49 in san francisco. we're in the low 40s in oakland and san jose at 47.
6:09 am
you do need to bundle up for the start of the day. as we take a look at our day planner in gilroy, we'll be at 40 degrees at 8:00, a mix of sun and clouds with our temperatures in the 60s this afternoon. most of us in the low 60s from the east bay to the peninsula. in the north bay it will be right at about 60 degrees for a high, and about the same tomorrow before the rain comes in. we'll talk about the timeline of our next storm system. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> we're going to start with the bay's best, the good news, in concord, $3.65 at ultra on clayton road. we'll check the city of milpitas for the middle price, city gas milpitas, $3.93 on north main street. and then marin county, stays below 4 bucks with $3.99, a cash deal at the hq fuels on shoreline highway. thanks for sharing, everybody,
6:10 am
on gasbuddy.com. pretty typical pattern. we have this unusual crash for contra costa county. southbound 680, the main street on-ramp there's a crash involving a motorcycle. the rider and the motorcycle itself blocking the fast lane. i'm hearing about injuries now for the motorcycle rider. we're still seeing a slower drive. anywhere south of there is all right getting toward the walnut creek interchange and highway 24. there's the backup at the bay bridge. some folks are held up in contra costa county, others are filling the eastshore freeway. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:09 right now. looming layoffs for a silicon valley giant. coming up, major cuts expected at cisco. plus, a lot of questions in the hopper after a kangaroo gets loose in an apartment complex. the insane chase to capture i t

good monday morning to you. as we take a live look outside in fremont, it's a quiet start to the day, but very chilly with temperatures now in the mid-40s. it will be mostly clear here for the next couple of hours, but then some high clouds filtering the sunshine late morning into the afternoon. we do have some mild temperatures for today and tomorrow. we'll talk about rain coming in on wednesday coming up.
6:14 am
we're looking toward our oakland camera. 880 moves smoothly. you can see a lot more headlights heading southbound and there's low clouds and maybe some fog developing in other parts of the bay. as we look at walnut creek, the flashing lights in the middle of the screen, that's a motorcycle crash. south 680 is jammed up coming out of concord and pleasant hill and toward the walnut creek interchange. we'll give you the latest coming up. >> thank you very much. it is 6:13 right now. wall street is set for a mixed open as the markets come off another positive week. the s&p 500 closing above the 5000 mark for the first time ever. two key reports for inflation, plus data on retail sales, imports and exports, manufacturing and housing. we get earnings from coca-cola, instacart, doordash and airbnb. we might be getting a clearer

something you might expect to see if you're visiting australia. >> let's just say things were hopping there. take a look. >> we see a kangaroo. >> it's kind of a large kangaroo. we've got it closed in the pool, gated area. >> marcus said this is in florida. this is video posted bid sheriff deputies after a kangaroo got inside a complex's pool area. it happened in tampa last week. deputies were able to return it to its owner, who has legal permits to house it. neither the kangaroo or anyone else was hurt. >> where did it come from? >> i bet that 911 operator was, like, are you drunk or something? what, a kangaroo, really? >> don't they usually have security gates. just hopped right over it. >> got some hops. >> some skills.
6:17 am
let's talk about this weather. today it's going to be pretty nice. >> it's going to be another nice day, even though it is starting out cold and we have some fog drifting around. this afternoon is going to be another one very much like yesterday, where we have some mild temperatures and sunshine, and it's also going to be dry tomorrow as well, as our temperatures reach into the low to mid-60s. wednesday is when the rain will be coming back and it looks like it's going to be a fairly weak storm system, about a half an inch of rainfall, with a bigger storm system expected friday through the weekend that could bring in higher rainfall totals, as well as gusty winds. we talked about fog moving around the north bay, the areas shaded in gray are under a dense fog advisory until 10:00. visibility may be a quarter mile or less so you want to allow some extra time to get to work. we've seen the worst of that fog around novato, as well as in santa rosa, with half mile visibility there. elsewhere it is mostly clear and hopefully we will see that it's
6:18 am
staying that way for the next couple of hours. then we're headed for the low 50s and '60s, 59 in san mateo, as well as napa and novato. we will have about the same temperatures tomorrow as the sunshine continues, but then moving ahead the climate prediction center is saying this upcoming weekend into next week we are going to see above average rainfall, well above average rainfall for parts of the bay area. and so here is the changes that we're going to see. so this first system coming in with a cold front brings us a quick round of rain, and then for the weekend, definitely more active weather pattern setting up with an atmospheric river coming in that will give us a couple of days of rainfall. looking ahead, what some of the computer models are showing, the lighter shades of purple shows about 2 1/2 to 3 inches of rain in the north bay and then the
6:19 am
peninsula toward the south bay could see about 2 inches of rainfall in total. so it's going to be a very soggy weekend, and the ground is still pretty wet. so we do have a couple more days to dry out, prepare for that rain, and then it's going to be off and on from valentine's day through the end of the weekend. mike, what's the update on that crash? >> unfortunately, we did hear there are major injuries associated with this crash. we talked about a motorcycle rider and we are concerned because there's not as much protection for someone on a motorcycle. as far as the traffic flow goes, it looks like there's a lot more traffic traveling past the scene. there may be just one lane blocked. this is at the main street on-ramp, so traffic is jammed up southbound 680 coming toward the scene. here is main street. if you jump on at ignacio valley road, you are clear. the second crash looks like it's completely cleared from the freeway. here are folks off kirker pass as well. the cut-through off of highway
6:20 am
4. the backup is now from 242 all the way down to about main street. the rest of contra costa county looks all right. there is a build for concord and highway 4. you can see it's southbound 680 that bears the most impact. this takes that route into consideration and kirker pass does make the cut-through. you're still at the standard 22 minutes coming off highway 4 and toward walnut creek from pittsburg. the rest of the bay, a smooth drive. southbound 680 and walnut creek at main street is where the crash is affecting traffic there because it's very visible and we're, of course, concerned about the motorcycle rider there. back to you. >> 6:20 this morning. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> she's waited a couple of years for a company to replace a product. then her patience ran out so she ran to us. ran to us. m consui'me

end, it's tough. i'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. >> regardless of how this game, the outcome of it was, i'm still going to start training soon, i'm still going to get ready for next season. that stuff doesn't change. so it's just something that i try to focus on. >> it's not something that just words or anything makes it feel better. you sit there and deal with it and you've got to do that for a while. i'm so proud of brock, how he shows up every week, how he plays. he had an unbelievable year and did a hell of a job today. >> reporter: the kansas city chiefs have won three super bowl titles in the last five seasons. if you're looking for a bright spot for the 49ers, here it is. despite the heartbreaking loss to kc, they have opened up as a super bowl favorites for next season. in las vegas, anthony flores for "today in the bay." 6:38 right now. moving you forward in the fight for marriage equality. and today marking a major bay area milestone.
6:39 am
20 years ago san francisco started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. the city and then mayor gavin newsom defied federal and state laws. over the next month, more than 4,000 marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples. the unions were eventually nullified. 11 years later, the u.s. supreme court ruled same-sex marriages could be federally recognized. some fear a high court may revisit the issue and overturn the way the same way abortion access was reversed. taking a peek outside. look at that. almost looks like lavender skies over san jose on this monday morning. coming off a great weekend. better enjoy it today as well. >> yes, we have today and tomorrow with dry weather, and then rain will be back just in time for valentine's day. we are starting out with temperatures in the mid-30s from livermore to dublin. it's 44 now in martinez and 37 degrees in sonoma. it's a chilly start in the north bay with some patchy dense fog.
6:40 am
santa rosa will see the fog linger through 8:00, clearing out around 10:00. but then just staying mostly cloudy with some peeks of sunshine for the afternoon with temperatures in the upper 50s. we'll hit a high of 62 in san jose, as well as los gatos, and into the day tomorrow, about the same before the rain arrives. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you're saying the commute is building through the east bay. >> it is, and you can see the volume build on the westbound san mateo bridge. not a lot of brake tapping. we see more traffic flowing southbound and there will be brake tapping as you head past an earlier crash just past industrial for southbound 880. there's more slowing past the 92 interchange and then more slowing again because there's another crash at the stevenson on-ramp on 880. no lanes of the freeway are blocked. it's just activity there visibility from the freeway itself. that's the build for the east bay. we do have some recovery in this part of the east bay.
6:41 am
