today, monday, february, 12th, 2024. breaking news, megashooting. new details about those injured after a gunman opened fire at a joel osteen's church in texas, worshipers forced to flee sunday services. what we're learning about the victims, the shooter and who's being credited with saving lives. safe and sound, two israeli hostages are back home rescued during an intense raid in gaza. critical care, secretary of defense lloyd austin is back in the hospital, his second time being admitted in a matter of weeks. and top spot. the kansas city chiefs weren't the only winners after last night's game. >> remember when i told you i'd do anything for you. this is anything. >> we'll show you the commercials that scored biggest with the viewers. >> don't get me started about that halftime show, fol zblx oh, yeah. >> usher.

>> fantastic. i was up really late last night. lot of breaking news hour to begin with, we'll start with houston authorities providing an update just moments ago about a shooting inside a megachurch in houston, texas. >> investigators say the shooter walked into the church with their young son and an assault-style rifle and started shooting. they found anti-semitic writings as well. too early in the investigation to draw conclusions about the motive. >> a second gun in shooter's bag that was never fired, they stressed they believe this was a lone wolf act. >> joining us now is morgan chesky, what else did we learn from that press conference and what else do we know about the shooter? >> reporter: yeah, some pretty illuminaing facts here of the various degrees of this individual who opened fire

yesterday. in addition to what you just mentioned authorities also confirmed something else that we had been alluded to by authorities but just now confirmed a well documented history of mental health issues specifically back in 2016 this individual was put under an emergency detention order by houston police and authorities confirmed at least six prior arrests, one of them being for unlawful possession of a firearm. these are just a few of the troubling details that have come to light less than 24 hours after this tragedy took place here, when according to witnesses right as this service was beginning to start this armed woman walked inside lakewood church and started opening fire, where they were almost immediately engaged by two off-duty officers working security at the church.

in addition to the presence of that armed individual we do know they had a young 7-year-old, believed to be their son who was struck in that brief gunfight, critically listed in critical condition. unknown at this time who struck whom. this armed individual clearly was putting this child in harm's way by bringing them into the dhur and pulling out that long rifle and opening fire. among some of the other evidence recovered, federal investigators served aer is warrant overnight and right now we know there was boxes of evidence brought out, some of that could contain chemicals that together could be used to create an explosive by officials making it very clear no working explosive has been found at this time. guys. >> morgan, you mentioned the young child, the 7-year-old, the pay your of houston said pray for this young 7-year-old.

because he's an innocent victim in this. another victim in this? >> reporter: there was, 57-year-old male church-goer was struck in the leg during this gunfight and we know they were taken to an nearby hospital yesterday, but at last checked they have since been released. some good news there, authorities saying this very much remains an active investigation as they dig deeper into finding a potential motive. >> morgan chesky on the ground for us, morgan, thank you. israeli forces are zeroing in on the southern gaza city of rafam where more than one million are seeking shelter. >> new video from the israeli military, this shows the moments that two freed hostages boarded a helicopter from gaza back to israel.

let's bring in raf sanchez, he's in tel aviv, israel. raf what do we know about that hostage rescue mission? >> reporter: kate, the israeli military says special forces stormed into an apartment building in the southern gaza city of rafah at 1:49 a.m. local time, they used explosives to breach the door, they killed three hamas armed gunmen and rescued the two hostages you can see on your screen there. they were both kidnapped from the same kibbutz. they spent 129 days in captivity. inside of gaza. but earlier this morning, they were reunited with their families at a hospital here in the greater tel aviv area, they're said to be in good condition at this point. but the israeli military also launching a wave of air strikes in that city of rafah to cover

the retreat of these special forces as they headed out with those two rescued hostages. hamas-run health ministry said at least 76 were killed. our team was in the hospital where doctors were just overwhelmed by the number of wounded being rushed in. as a result of those strikes. guys? >> raf, as that rescue happened overnight in rafah, the city is a major focus for the israeli military, what's going on if this area right now? >> reporter: israel says that rafah the southern most city in gaza, wedged up against the egyptian border is hamas' last bastion inside of gaza and also where half of the population of the strip are sheltering. many displaced from tear homes in north by earlier fighting.

they fled south to rafah thinking it would be safe there. now israel says it's preparing to launch a major ground assault on that city. i spoke to a senior u.n. official in rafah earlier they say people are terrified and he has no answer at this point and this has been a major source of tension between the white house and the israeli government, the biden administration saying they support israel's right to go after hamas but will not support an assault on rafah without a e credible plan to get civilians out of harm's way. >> raf sanchez, thank you. let's turn to happier news now, the kansas city chiefs planning to have their victory parade on valentine's day, wednesday, after their thrilling overtime win. >> fans in kansas city got the party started late last night after the confetti rained down on las vegas. the night punctuated by an-field

doctors say austin had to go under general anesthesia for a nonsurgical procedure. sent austin was hospitalized back in december for complications following a treatment for his recently diagnosed prostate cancer. courtney, the pentagon just gave an update. >> reporter: so we know that secretary austin completed this medical procedure, he's expected to resume his duties as early as tomorrow. this is busy week for him. he was supposed to travel to brussels tomorrow to host a group of allies where they discuss support for ukraine, of course that comes as you know at a very critical time this week where the u.s. is fighting whether the u.s. will continue to fund weapons for ukraine. it's virtual. not clear at this point whether he'll take part in it or whether the senior policy will take

place. he's made it through these medical procedures related to this emergent bladder issue. they could not say whether secretary austin's prostate surgery in december and the come mri cases he faced for weeks are related to this emergent bladder issue or not. he took the question, it stands to reason they would all be related. frankly, i was supposed to hear him say that secretary austin, these may be separate issues that the secretary is facing right now. >> still some lingering questions, courtney. this new trip to walter reed was handled much differently. >> reporter: literally couldn't be more different than the hospitalization on new year's day where the secretary went via ambulance, nobody was notified

here in the pentagon, but president biden wasn't told until four days later on thursday evening. very different in this case, the pentagon notified the white house before the secretary went there, went to walter reed yesterday, they also told the hill, congress, senior pentagon leaders and even the public. >> we'll see how this next round of recovery goes. courtney, thank you. the father of one of five u.s. marines killed in a helicopter crash in california is speaking out. a veteran himself he's now demanding answers as to why the marines were flying during the bad weather in the first place. >> always wanted to be a marine. >> reporter: gregory davis is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his son, 21-year-old lance corporal donovan davis. >> he's probably one of the most soft-spoken, kindest person. >> reporter: one of five young

marines all between the ages of 21 and 28 who lost their lives when the helicopter they were flying from nevada to california crashed into a forest during one of southern california's most intense rainstorms in years. >> it's been probably the week every parent dreads. >> reporter: he's demanding answers from the department of defense about why his son was flying that day. >> i've flown that route many times. pretty much in shock that after i heard the magnitude of the weather. >> are you hoping that something could come out of this investigation that may change the way the marine corps make their decision. >> if not, then these five marines died in vain. >> reporter: military experts say leaders are also calculating

sidewalk. and take a look at the soot in the middle of the street. that's where a car was set on fire saturday night. sfpd looking to get to the bottom of this, with the help of video circulating online. it happened around 9:00 saturday night. waymo says the crowd vandalized the car and broke its window. someone threw a firework inside that set the car on fire. in a statement, waymo said in part, the vehicle was not transporting any riders and no injuries have been reported. we are working closely with local official safeties to respond to the situation. san francisco board of supervisors says this could have gone terribly wrong. >> it is extremely dangerous. buildings could have been lit on fire. people have could have been hurt. most importantly, this was the day of the chinese lunar new year. this is one of the most parent days for families.

sparked a southern california wildfire has pleaded guilty no involuntary manslaughter. that fire resulted in firefighter's death. he'll serve a year in jail, his sentence includes two years of probation and 200 hours of community service. police in san francisco are investigating after a waymo self-driving car was vandalized and set on fire over the weekend. it happened in city's chinatown district during a lunar new year celebration, no one was inside that driverless car. police haven't made any arrests. the game of pickleball has skyrocketed in popularity and so have the number of serious injuries related to the sport. increasing by 200% in the past two decades. soft tissues injuries were the most common found while playing the sport. players over the age of 60 also

suffered worsening symptoms of arthritis. now to race to white house after the special counsel's report of president biden's handling of classified documents. called biden elderly. democrats flooded political shows to defend the president calling him sharp and on his game at the same time, over the weekend, former president trump drew criticizing suggesting that the u.s. could not protect nato allies. >> one of the presidents of a big country stood up and say, well, sir. we don't pay and we're attacked by russia, will you protect us? i said, you didn't pay, you're delinquent, he said yes, what if that happened. i wouldn't protect you. >> nbc news white house correspondent monica alba joins me now. how is the white house reacting

to those comments we just heard from former president trump and also dealing with fallout from the special counsel's report. >> reporter: this is an issue that this white house and administration have spoken out about repeatedly warning about the former president's comments on nato as ones that are completely dangerous and really that they illuminate the issues what would happen if he were to win the white house again, they're painting that as a real contrast something that the president has been very clear about his support for nato and this is something where they're also drawing a contrast between the current president and his predecessor when it comes to as you just mentioned those allegations in robert hur's special counsel report. the president today in remarks tried to sort of brush them off with a bit of a joke. take a listen. >> we're floating clean energy and industries in the future. made in america. what i didn't realize and i've

rights legislation. >> reporter: studied the nonviolence principles of ghandi. rustin working alongside the likes of ella baker and john lewis, there could be a desire to present this sentiment when it comes to the civil rights movement. >> it shows these were people with ideas and they had different ways of doing it. it took a black quaker to organize the march on washington. >> we're going to put together the largest peaceful protest in the history of this nation. >> reporter: many believe rustin's work was nearly written out of history because he was openly gay. >> on the day i was born black i was also born homosexual.
