terrifying moments in kansas city, as a parade to honor the kansas city chiefs and this super bowl victory turns violent and deadly a shooting downtown leaves one person dead, more than 20 others hurt we'll bring you the latest on the investigation. in our nation's capital, several officers are recovering after being shot while serving an arrest warrant. the standoff lasted more than 12 hours until police were able to take the suspect into custody.

jesse kirsch has more on what exactly unfolded yesterday afternoon. >> reporter: what was meant to be a day of celebration for kansas city. >> i have shots fired on the west side. >> reporter: instead, became a day of fear and panic. >> we just heard a bunch of, you know, pop, pop, and people started returning and scattering >> reporter: this video obtained by tmz sports shows the moment shots rang out >> girl flex tonext to me where daughter and her husband was standing was shot in the mouth /*. >> reporter: at least one person was killed and 22 shot after a shooting at a parade celebrating the chiefs' second straight super bowl win >> immediately, officers responded to the area. took two people into custody and also immediately rendered life-sustaining aid to those victims. >> reporter: just moments earlier, it was an all-out party. officials had prepared for about a million people to pack downtown >> kansas city, let me hear you

one time >> reporter: it was all winding down when suddenly the atmosphere changed >> we might have a situation here we're trying to keep an eye on >> reporter: our kansas city station was broadcasting live. >> the mood has shifted here, as we're seeing people jump barriers >> reporter: as the shots rang out, confusion in the crowd. as some fans began to flee >> they said active shooter. so we just dropped down to the ground my daughter tried to climb on top of me to protect me. and i tried to just hold her so nothing would happen to her. >> reporter: police rushed in, searching for the shooter. the police chief says the response was immediate with more than 800 officers already on scene for the parade. >> i'm angry at what happened

today. the people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment. >> reporter: the injured carried out on stretchers. a sniper stood ready on a nearby rooftop. three law enforcement officials briefed on the case tell nbc news the shooting is believed to be criminal in nature and not terrorism. before the parade, i asked the mayor about plans to keep the event safe >> our police department's prepared for whatever comes our way. >> reporter: all chiefs players, coaches and staff are accounted for and safe the chiefs writing in a statement, we are truly saddened by this senseless act of violence and three days after winning the super bowl, patrick mahomes posted "praying for kansas city". a standoff that injured four officers in washington, d.c. came to an end after more than 12 hours police saying it all started yesterday morning when officers tried to serve an arrest warrant on a man wanted for krults to animals. that's when julius james fired

shots through the door hitting three officers a fourth officer was hurt, though he wasn't hit by gunfire. james was barricaded inside his home for more than 12 hours before officers were able to take him into custody. >> three of our officers were shot today serving an arrest warrant. on someone who was cruel to animals. the same type of response that we provide for our officers, we have that same care for animals as well. but i don't want it to be lost on anyone today, that the reason we are here today is because three of our officer have been shot >> all of those officers are in stable condition and expected to recover. let's turn now to the latest in the trials of donald trump. the former president's legal calendar is full today criminal cases are colliding with hearings taking place in both new york and georgia and overnight, a new filing with the supreme court by special counsel jack smith brie jackson joins us now from d.c. hi, brie, good morning let's start with this filing by jack smith

what is he asking the supreme court to do? >> reporter: good morning, frances, the bottom line is the special counsel wants the court to act quickly he does not want any delay in the trial in the efforts to overturn the 2020 election lawyers for donald trump say he should have presidential immunity when he was in office a lower court denied that request. and trump has asked the supreme court to postpone his trial while he appeals that ruling in a filing last night, jack smith asked the court to reject that request, saying this case has unique national importance now this is different than the election interference case in georgia. a hearing will be held there today. a judge is considering whether or not fulton county d.a. fani willis should be disqualified because of a personal relationship with the special prosecutor trump is accusing willis of misconduct willis has admitted to the relationship but says there was no conflict of interest that should disqualify her, frances

>> and donald trump isn't going to have time to be at that hearing in person, because he's going to be here in new york instead. >> reporter: yeah, so there is another hearing happen today in new york for a hush money case and according to one of his attorneys, mr. trump will be there. the former president faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to adult film star stormy daniels back in 2016 he has pleaded not guilty to those charges and has filed motions to get the case dismissed. the judge today will address those motions. and this hearing is also expected to determine the timetable for the trial. so there are those two hearing today in new york and georgia. then tomorrow, we could see the verdict in trump's civil fraud trial in new york. trump has denied any wrongdoing, but the judge in that case already decided that fraud was committed. so we're just waiting to learn what the penalties will be frances? >> certainly a lot to watch to end the week thanks

according to lebanon state media, israeli airstrikes killed ten civilians. for more on this, let's bring in nbc's chapman bell what else do we know about these attacks? >> reporter: good morning, frances. following that rocket attack on israel, an israeli defense forces spokesperson saying its military jets began an extensive wave of attacks in lebanese territory. the idf saying its fighter jets struck a series of hezbollah targets, targeting military compounds, operational control rooms and infrastructure used by hamas. the lebanese state news saying civilians were among the death toll, including women and children in at least two different areas amongst the dead, and including many others injured. hezbollah saying there will be undoubtedly be a response. and this response will be at the required and appropriate level israel's chief of the general staff telling heads of local municipalities in northern
