unforgettable super bowl ad. ♪ let's get loud, let's get loud ♪ >> let's go. >> today, thursday, february 15th, 2024. >> announcer: the from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning. good to see you. welcome to "today." it is a thursday morning. happy you're with us. >> nice to have you along. we have a lot of news to get to. we'll start in kansas city. it was supposed to be a day of celebration, and it turned into another mass shooting. >> yeah, another one. one person was killed, nearly two dozen hurt. it was at the chiefs super bowl parade. a lot of these victims have life-threatening injuries. and by the way, at least 11 of them are children. >> to put this in perspective, according to the gun violence archive, this is at least the 48th mass shooting in this country in the first 45 days of the year. it's a lot of unanswered questions about this investigation, including who was responsible, why this happened.

>> in a moment, we're going to talk to one of the paradegoers who sprang into action. but first let's talk to jesse kirsch who was covering the parade when the shots rang out. hey, jesse, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. we were here watching people starting to trickle out as the rally had ended. then we noticed that some people were running away from the stage area as others, who appeared to be police officers, were rushing in. and at that point, we knew something appeared to have gone terribly wrong here. according to three law enforcement officials briefed on the case, this does not appear to be terrorism related at this point. but we still do not know why, what started out as a giant party, turned into something that was so violent. it only took moments for a city full of super bowl joy to be overcome with grief.

[ gunfire ] >> reporter: video obtained by tmz sports appears to show the moments gunfire erupted. some in the crowd fleeing, as police rushed in. at least one person was killed, identified overnight as local radio dj, lisa lopez galván. more than 20 wounded, some seriously, among those hurt, at least 11 children, ranging from 6 to 15 years old. >> something that was supposed is to be joyful just turned so quickly and you can see some strollers out here. >> reporter: some of the team's star players taking to social media. patrick mahomes writing, praying for kansas city, while travis kelce said he was heartbroken. as the chaos unfolded, chiefs

player trey smith said he was rushed to the train station and even barricaded in a closet with teammates and others. >> i'm infuriated, you know. i'm frustrated. you know, it was supposed to be a day of celebration for the city. >> reporter: police say they detained three people, as the investigation continues. in this footage, paradegoers tackling a possible suspect. >> we tackled him! >> we tackled him. >> reporter: elissa contreras says her father, paul, was one of the good samaritans who tackled that person. she filmed the chaotic moments after police arrived. some here outraged. >> i'm never bringing my kids to another place like this. too many people, too many children for them to just spreading guns like that. you know what i mean? >> reporter: the mayor speaking out. >> what you saw happen is why people talk about guns a lot. we had over 800 officers there, and i think that's something that all of us who are parents,

who are just regular people living each day have to decide what we wish to do about it. >> reporter: president biden in a statement asking in part, what are we waiting for, what else do we need to see? how many more families need to be torn apart. going back for a moment to that video that we saw that appears to show bystanders tackling someone who is potentially a suspect. authorities say, they are looking into if that is, in fact, what we were seeing on camera. hoda? >> all right, jesse kirsch for us there, thank you. we are joined by paul contreras and his daughter, elissa. as you saw in the piece, paul was one of those parade goers sprang into action once that gunfire erupted. paul, alyssa, good morning. it looked super chaotic. will you take us into that moment and what moment and what made you decide to spring into action >> it was just a reaction, you know he was running against -- the

wrong way and there was another gentlemen saying, you know, just screaming out of the top of his lungs, you know, get this guy, tackle him and i heard him and i really wasn't for sure until he came running and i had a perfect angle to do what i did, and i did what i did, you know i took him down. and as i took him down, i seen -- i seen the weapon, the gun fall to the ground, so when i hit him, whether i hit it out of his hand or it fell out of his jacket, because he was wearing a big, bulky jacket, i seen it, when i was taking him down, i seen the weapon fall to the ground so i knew right then and there, like, okay, he's got one weapon, but this one's on the ground he may have another one, i need to take him to the ground and

keep him on the ground is what i did. >> so we don't know -- you saw him running against the grain, which was suspicious someone else tackled first, you came on to help in that effort did you get a good look at this person's face? did they say anything? >> i did not when i took him down, i took him down -- i tackled him from the back but when i took him down to the ground, his hood went over his head, so he was face down the whole time i had him face down the whole time with me on top of him and then another good samaritan helped me keep him to the ground so i did not get a good look at him at all >> so paul, you were on him until the police came. did the police take him away, did they arrest him? >> yes it was after -- i don't know how

the chp says a toyota tacoma pickup truck struck a mini cooper. two of the three passengers died in the mini cooper and the driver and the passenger of the truck are in the hospital and we don't know the extent of their injuries. the a's may not be ready to move on just yet. "the chronicle" is reporting that the executives will meet with east bay leaders today to discuss extending the lease. this season is supposed to be the final one for the a's, but 2028 is the earliest date for a ballpark on the strip. for now the a's are considering several options for next year, including the river cat stadium in sacramento, and playing in a new minor league ballpark in salt lake city or sharing oracle park with the giants. it could be around the time of spring training, but we are feeling like we are smack dab in
