minnesota where the community of burnsville gathering at a vigil to honor the three emergency workers who were killed in the line of duty, responding to a domestic violence dispute. a suspect was barricaded in a home with several children. >> i need that ambulance to 33rd avenue. >> reporter: a family's call for help. >> medic two is taking two rigs. >> reporter: resulting in the death of three first responders. >> words can't express how hard today has been. >> reporter: the call came sunday before sun rise. it happened in the minneapolis suburb of burnsville. connor noonan heard shots less than two blocks away. >> loud, like boom, boom, boom, and rapid fire after that, like an automatic weapon, like pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: two police officers and one firefighter-paer parame

were killed. >> at one point during the barricaded situation, the subject opened fire on the officers in the home. >> reporter: the suspected shooter now dead. video shows an s.w.a.t. vehicle that appears to be riddled with bullet holes. >> all the screaming, all the stuff. >> reporter: emergency responders warned. >> medics, please back off. medics, back off and turn off lights. >> reporter: the victims have now been identified as police officers paul elmstrand and two others. a solemn scene outside the hospital where the three victims were taken. officers standing shoulder to shoulder. the three killed remembered for their sacrifice. >> every day we pray that they go home to their families.

and today that's not happening. we are all hurting. >> reporter: prayers, and one question asked by everyone here. why? >> to have that happen that close to home is just awful. i'm not sure where to go from here. >> reporter: and the shooter who was inside that home is now dead. also trapped inside with him, seven children. police say the youngest was only 2 years old. but those kids are safe. back to you. >> thank you, adrian. appreciate that reporting. the sudden death of russian opposition leader alexeina navay sending shock waves around the world. russian authorities say he collapsed after feeling unwell after a walk. while the details remain murky, western countries have been unified in placing the blame on russian president vladimir putin. for the latest, let's go to clau claudio lavanga. what's the latest about how this

all happened? >> reporter: good morning, richard. according t according to an independent russian newspaper, a person working at the morgue said he showed signs of bruising on his body, which could have been caused by people holding him down while he was having a seizure. he also said he had bruises on his chest which could be the result of cpr. he said he may have died due to a cardiac arrest, but he doesn't know of course what caused it. he also said that they were told to wait until they performed an autopsy, until a special team sent by moscow would arrive. of course nbc news doesn't have yet independent confirmation of that information reported by the paper. as for the official cause of death, the mother of navalny, she arrived at the prison where he was last detained was told he died of sudden death syndrome, which is a very rare and vague

she had her been criticizing former president trump after he made comments last week that putin the future of the nato alliance in jeopardy. now, the former president has not made any remarks publicly condemning the death of navalny. at a rally overnight, haley warned that trump's actions will embolden putin. >> donald trump is siding with a thug. who just killed his political opponent. he's going to side with him? over the allies who stood with us after 9/11? all that does is embolden putin. >> reporter: and while trump has not condemned the death of navalny, he did share a post on social media last night that compared himself to navalny. and at a rally, he said putin prefers joe biden as president. president biden was quick to condemn the death of navalny,

saying putin is responsible. the biden campaign has also launched ads attacking trump's threats about nato. now all eyes are on south carolina ahead of saturday's republican primary. nikki haley is trailing in the polls in her home state where she served as governor. and last night she said the polls show most americans do not want trump or biden as president, so she asked supporters, why would i give up. >> thank you, brie. the south carolina hunting estate of alex murdaugh has been sold for a second town. the property sold for a million dollars. a big drop from the $2.6 million it sold for last year. those buyers decided to resell. the identity of the out-of-state buyer has not been disclosed. but they apparently plan to develop it as a horse farm. alex murdaugh is serving a life sentence after being convicted of murdering his wife and son on that property in 2021.

the west coast this week beginning with a new round of dangerous weather. heavy snow is under way in the higher elevations. traffic coming to a stand still. millions along the coastline also under wind and flood alerts today, monterey county has issued evacuation warnings for low-lying areas. these are moving in just two weeks after a deadly atmospheric river hit that state as well. let's get an update from michelle grossman. >> another western wallop. we're looking at really heavy rain. we could see an inch per hour as we go throughout this monday. also a chance of thunderstorms, especially northern central california. that could bring a few tornados. looking at heavy snow, also damaging wind. this is going to last the next several days. an area of low pressure. powerful storm, whatever you want to call it, bringing all this wet weather. millions under wind alerts.
