cinthia pimentel has a look at our microclimate forecast. wow, it was a stunner yesterday. it looks beautiful behind you, but you told me it's going to be a little cooler. >> it was absolutely beautiful yesterday. and you're right about that. good morning, everyone. i mean, just breathtaking views for our sunday sun rise over the golden gate bridge. look at dublin, just absolute view of this sun rise over there in the tri valley. and san jose, a beautiful sun rise over downtown san jose. temperatures are a bit cooler today. 47 in fremont. 43 in napa. santa rosa, also in the low 40s. as we are going into the final day of -- final sunday of the month and the last couple of days of february, we're going to talk about cooler and cloudier conditions with a chance of rain for tomorrow morning. mainly south of the golden gate bridge. but we're going to talk about a winter blast ahead for next weekend. so rain and snow are all coming back in that seven-day forecast,

possibly around the bay area mountains, too. that's coming up. >> cinthia, we'll see you soon. thanks. happening today, the black joy parade in oakland. this is video from last year's parade. the seventh annual event celebrates black heritage. it's the largest family friendly event of its kind in california. the parade begins at 14th and franklin streets and goes up franklin to 19th where there will be a big celebration, including two stages of music and performers. more than 200 black-owned vendors. our parent company, comcast, is a proud sponsor of the parade. if you see our team, say hello. the black joy parade in oeshg starts at 12:30 today. fireworks lighting the skies over san francisco last night,

capping off a festive celebration, welcoming the year of the dragon. thousands upon thousands of people packed the city streets to get a glimpse of the world's largest chinese new year parade. unique floats with different dragons, highlighted the mythical creature and the hope that 2024 brings power, strength, and good luck. alyssa gourd takes us there. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: echoes of firecrackers filled downtown san francisco as the city gathered for the 2024 chinese new year parade. >> it's been exciting. it's fun, it's great to see the community come out and just to celebrate the new year. >> reporter: this parade is welcoming in the year of the dragon. >> i like it. my parents, they're big believers in the zodiac, so by dad and brothers were born in

the year of the dragon. on >> red ones, black ones, and yellow ones. >> reporter: attendees said they felt safe. police could be spotted along the routes and streets managed with barricades. mayor breed was part of the festivities with other public officials waving to the crowds and shaking hands. businesses in the city and especially in chinatown are hoping the paradegoers will give them a boost. for out of town visitors, this was an opportunity to explore san francisco. >> i think it's important not just for the asian population, but you see people from all races, all different countries coming for this event. >> reporter: from the music, to the dancing, to the martial arts to the floats, this san francisco tradition left visitors of all ages with memories they'll hold onto. alyssa gourd, "today in the bay."

we're going to take a turn now as we told you yesterday morning. it has been two years since the russian invasion into ukraine. thousands of people across the globe gathered to mark the somber date yesterday, remembering the lives lost and speaking out against the war. marianne favro takes us to the day of action in san francisco. >> reporter: two years after russia invaded ukraine, leaders from canada, italy and the eu gathered in kyiv to lay flowers marking the anniversary of the attack. here in the bay area, more than 100 people gathered in front of san francisco city hall to show their support for ukraine, as they vowed to increase awareness about the war. this woman says her cousin was killed in battle. >> it's so sad that two years and people starting to forget. but my people in my country, they are suffering.

some of them do not have a house. some of them do not have a child. some of them do not have what to eat. >> reporter: supporters formed a caravan of cars and drove through the city, displaying the national flag of ukraine. >> the idea is to, first of all, get together, show our unity, and also the americans and ukrainians have come to show that california supports ukraine. >> reporter: the conflict has left tens of thousands dead, injured, or missing. russia is appearing confident, taking its first significant territory in nearly a year. and ukrainian forces are facing increasingly dire ammunition shortages as new military aid remains stalled in congress. bay area congressman ro khanna says action is critical. >> i strongly support the ukraine funding, and i'm so frustrated that the senate has

passed it, and our house speaker refuses to bring it for a vote. >> reporter: a senior nato official tells nbc news russia is likely to carry out a series of attacks, including air strikes, to mark the two-year anniversary. marianne favro, "today in the bay." in kansas city yesterday, hundreds of people packed into a church to honor the life of deejay lisa lopez-galvan, the 43-year-old mother and wife lost her life on valentine's day when she was hit by gunfire at the chiefs super bowl parade and rally. two men have been charged in connection with her death. two juveniles face charges of the shooting that left 22 others injured. lopez-galvan was wearing the jersey of the chiefs kicker at the celebration. he gifted her family one of his jerseys. kansas city governor laura kelly ordered flags to be lowered to half staff.

back in the bay area, a 16-year-old was killed in an early morning shooting in contra costa county in antioch just after 5:00 yesterday morning along observation way. the victim was found shot inside of a car. he was taken to the hospital where he died. officers say the shooting happened about two miles from where they found the victim along tupelo drive, also in antioch. no word of any arrests. a suspicious fire at a target store in vallejo happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. investigators say the fire broke out in a corner of the stone, segt off alarms, leading to an evacuation. it took firefighters about ten minutes to knock it down. the bigger challenge was getting the smoke out. investigators will be combing through surveillance video to see how the fire started. damage is estimated at a million dollars. turning now to decision 2024. another primary victory for

former president donald trump, beating nikki haley with ease in south carolina's primary, a state where she was formally the governor. after polls closed, trump spoke with supporters saying the wind is a sign republicans are united behind him. meanwhile, despite calls for nikki haley to end her campaign, she is vowing to stay in the race. >> there's never been a spirit like this. i just want to say i've never seen the republican party so unified as it is right now. >> i'm not giving up this fight when a majority of americans disapprove of both donald trump and joe biden. >> the political spotlight now shifts to michigan, which holds its presidential primary on tuesday. here in california, super tuesday is a little more than a week away. early voting is underway right now. this was the scene at san francisco city hall yesterday. workers ready to accept your ballot. voters across the bay area have

the fact that 76% of voters say they have real concerns about his age and his ability to seven. he was incredibly forceful in his defense of joe biden and his record, and i countered by asking, wait a minute, it's not his record that voters have concerns about, it's his age and their perception for his ability to serve. and to beat trump, the democrats have laid out by their own definition, he says that the president does have it in him. i asked if there's been any buzz, any new buzz around governor newsom about him getting into the race. he dismissed that completely as idle chatter. so it's a really robust conversation, but, again, he stands firmly behind joe biden, behind his record, behind his chances for winning re-election. and there's no doubt, governor newsom is someone who you will see a lot out on the campaign trail. i did ask the governor, is he

skies and that's what experts are predicting. more people expected to leave home and go abroad. as marcus washington reports, this year's numbers are expected to break records. >> reporter: good morning. so travel experts already calling 2024 the revenge travel year following some down years due to the economy and the pandemic. yet, a lot more people are saying bon voyage. more people are booking flights with more than half of their users planning more international trips this year. despite recent inflation, 57% are expecting to pay more for travel, and more than six in ten choose destinations based on deals for airfare. one spokesperson says this year may break some records. >> now that we're in 2024 and coming off of 2023, we've seen more people travel in select dates over 2023, and we are anticipating more than 2023 that

panda 4" opening in theaters march 8. a rare bloom in the bay area. san francisco's california academy of sciences says its corpse flower is in its window to bloom. its name is mirage. the bloom will bring tons of extra visitors. it's unusual because of how early in the season it is. it smells similar to rotten fish, garlic, sweaty feet. it could reach up to ten feet tall and will stay that way for about three days once it blooms. experts say it could bloom starting today or by sometime thursday. we are members, i don't know if we'll be going to that. >> keeping you on your toes for a foul smell. >> time now to check in with zib cinthia from foul to beautiful. you had a gorgeous forecast yesterday, but you have a cooldown today? >> yeah. some changes today, but some people might love that. we have about everything for etch.

let's go outside and talk about the black joy trade. this is a huge celebration. you might see kari hall out there. those temperatures are going to be in the 60s. notice there are a few more of the cloud icons on the screen compared to the kind of weather we were having yesterday. we'll look at more of the clouds ushering in this afternoon. just slightly cooler temperatures as we go into sunday. speaking of the temperatures, 62 in san francisco. 64 in napa. a lot of upper 60s on the board from concord, down into mountain view and into san jose, downtown could reach 68 degrees. so fairly mild day. but still, no 70s like what we had yesterday. we are looking at this low that is off to the pacific. it's going to bring that cloud cover today and rain chances for tomorrow. so let's get you ready for the week. lots of people back to work and back to school. we could start off in the north bay with very light rain out towards the coast and parts of

101, but most of the activity will stay south of the golden gate bridge. notice how it's coming up from the south, bringing just very light amount of rain, if anything at all as we go into our monday. tuesday, wednesday, thursday, stay fairly dry, but notice what's behind me. we see the shift in a lot of those colors of blues coming down. we're going to begin for the return of winter as we go into the second half of the week. this is going to bring bitterly cold temperatures, rain, and even the chance of seeing low-level snow down here in the bay area, about 3,000 to 4,000 feet. the diablo range and parts of mt. hamilton could be in for a little snow and insane amounts in the sierra. most substantial rain is about thursday and friday. and next weekend. so you might want to bring the weekend plans inside now if you are starting to think ahead. we see the temperature changes, the rain and the snow here, continuing on into saturday and possibly into saturday of next weekend.

so we'll start off our march on a good foot here as we look at the rain and snow we could be getting. a lot will be piling up to the sierra and parts of northern california. but we could be in for a good amount of rain here, about one to two inches. still a couple of days away, so we'll put those final touches as we go through this week. on the seven-day forecast in san francisco, things turn more cloudy today. but overall, not too bad. we'll go with the spotty rain chance for the start of our workweek, settle into some dry weather, the middle of the week. but then expect some more changes as we go into thursday, friday, and saturday. definitely going to be a miracle march as we talk about the sierra when we started with the snow drought. but things could be going above 100% of average for this time of year. >> love it. nice that we get a little sunshine break. cinthia, thanks. 7:22. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, the san jose quakes drop their season opener on the road.

come for the parade. >> exciting. i mean, it's fun, it's great to see the community come out. and just to celebrate the new year. >> people told us they plan to spend more time in chinatown, which is welcome news for businesses there. we're going to turn now to elon musk. he's on notice by the u.s. government to give u.s. troops in taiwan access to the spacex satellite network star shield. the satellite communications network is designed specifically for the military, but a delegation of lawmakers learned that star shield is not operational for american troops stationed in or near taiwan. the house china committee sent spacex musk a letter demandsing that he fix the problem and warning him that this could be seen as a violation of spacex's contract with the pentagon, which requires "global access." musk is also being asked to

brief the house committee by march 8th. musk and spacex have yet to respond. a spokesperson for the late russian opposition leader alexei navalny say yesterday his body was finally returned to his mother. he died in prison a week ago friday. this week, his mother issued a plea saying she had been trying to retrieve her son's body, even petitioning vladamir putin. russian officials say navalny died after a walk on prison grounds. the white house has blamed putin for his death. this week, the u.s. issued hundreds of sanctions against russia in response. the federal aviation administration has given the court of oakland a $10 million grant to modernize airport restrooms. the oakland airport will restore

a women's restroom, and convert another men's room at gate seven to single user family restrooms, as well as a lactation suite. that work is expected to be completed by mid 2025. the days unfortunately are numbered for many historic businesses on capitola wharf. the wharf house restaurant have operated on the pier for decades, but as you have seen on nbc bay area, storms damaged both of the buildings. the city of capitola deemed them unsafe and announced it plans to tear them down. the owners of the businesses were given just days to pack up. the city estimates the demolition to drag up the construction budget of the damaged wharf. it will not be able to help either business to rebuild. the business owners still open to figure out something. >> there isn't anything as

unique as what we have out here, up and down any coastline. >> owners say they will do everything they can to reopen in the future. but for now, those memories lay before their eyes. as we continue to honor and celebrate black heritage here in the bay area this month, we are focusing on some of the people who have made the bay area such a unique place. often when people hit retirement age, they might take up golf, travel, photography, playing with their grand kids. but joe rosotto, jr., finds one woman finding a second career in the modeling world. >> reporter: in the world of high fashion, the models hitting the runway tend to skew tall, thin, and well, young. but apparently, carol line dolling didn't get the memo. >> i am a model at the age of 77. this is from a shoot from a sikh

collective. it's amazing, because i never had any aspirations to be a model. this is from the qatar era. so i've been really lucky to have worked for lots of big-name companies, estee lauder, cvs. >> reporter: she found her true calling about seven years ago, following a career in corporate marketing and customer service. >> then i retired and reinvented myself as a fashion model. this is a designer from new york. when i retired, i realized that i was being overlooked and underestimated. people had kicked me to the curb. >> reporter: so at age 70, she made it a goal to start dressing snazier. >> one day i was in a shop and a woman said, what are your aspirations? i said, well, i'm really concerned that women my age are just kind of giving up. this shot was primarily about the earrings. she said, well, why don't you

come on in and do some photos with us. this is for one of the local designers. it was a different look, a different idea. it was not the 23-year-old. >> reporter: then the phones started ringing. >> this is a designer tiby. >> reporter: the modeling gigs pull her between the bay area and that fashion mecca, new york. >> soho. it's really unusual when i'm onset for a shoot to have anyone, as a model, who is over 40. and certainly not over 70. >> reporter: it's possible the seeds of dolling's personal revolution came from her childhood in the south. >> i grew up in rural north carolina, and our family history reads much like black history books. my great grandfather was a slave. my uncles were sharecroppers. there was jim crow. that was the environment that i grew up. civil rights was such a big part

at 40 past the hour, let's get you ready for your sunday plans around the bay area. we're seeing the sun rise over oakland, and we'll prepare for the black joy parade. let's walk you through what you have to bring. bring the sunglasses and a light layer. in the afternoon, it will start to cool down a little bit with increasing cloud cover. at noon, the parade starts at 12:30, but temperatures will be 62 degrees. 59 in san francisco and half moon bay. and in the afternoon, i think the only parts that are going to stay pretty similar to yesterday's temperatures are going to be down in the south bay. upper 60s, and while the rest of us see the temperatures cooling down just a little bit under the overcast skies. so taking it hour by hour, here's the cloud cover. in the middle parts of the

afternoon, no rain associated with this just yet. as we go into monday, could be looking at some very weak and light cells popping in through parts of marin county, all of this activity is starting to come to us from the south. so the chances of seeing rain down through parts of the south bay, could be increasing as we go into the afternoon. that's it. we clear out for the afternoon, so you can get a head start on your week. through the rest of the week, tuesday, wednesday will be dry, but changes are ahead as we go into thursday and the weekend. so don't put away that rain gear just yet or your thicker jackets, even though we have had stunning weather. the hues of the blues and pinks, could be the chance of lowering the snow levels into the north bay mountains, the diablo range, the mt. hamilton area, bringing cold air over the next couple of days not only with the rain but with the snow. let's look at what's beyond these temperatures, as we go

into the second half of the week. notice we're climbing back down into the upper 50s, some low 60s. we're really going to feel that chill on friday with the return of that breeze, as well. and saturday of next weekend, nothing like what we had yesterday. 70s, back down into the 50s in fremont. 53 in santa rosa and upper 40s as you go into ukiah and lake county. and speaking of cold temperatures, we're also going to be looking at lake tahoe, where this snow will be piling up in feet as we go into the sierras. so if you didn't go this weekend, you might not make it there next weekend either as we wrap it up in that seven-day forecast for you. cloudy skies for today, a spotty rain chance, light amounts. we'll stay dry through the week, but looking at the major changes ahead. winter will return next weekend. >> cinthia, thanks so much. it's 7:43. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston

welcome back. february is american heart month. heart disease affects millions of people, and health experts say women are more likely to be misdiagnosed. kris sanchez has more. >> reporter: we are moving you forward with more awareness on heart disease, which is the number one killer of men and women. but women, we are more likely to be misdiagnosed and undertreated. according to the cedar sinai heart institute, women are 60% more likely to be misdiagnosed than men when having a heart attack and twice as likely to die because of that. women of color have a 50% higher risk of dying of heart disease, as well.

about to go away. here he faced nikki haley this time, on her turf. and it's the third time they've been together, if you will. every time he's been a winner. this is something especially given that she lost in south carolina that's going to be meaningful to a lot of people. donald trump is back, he's going to be here. it's very, very strong. >> so we talked about the 30 points and it ended up he was 20 ahead of her. how does this victory stack up against the others, is it indicative the party is behind him, regardless of what? a lot of gop voters are saying he's not representative of them. >> that's the point, they always said that, he's an outlier. the fact is, he is really identified with the party. i'll tell you more about that in a second. this chart tells you a lot. these are the three race where is they have been together. in south carolina, haley got her wish that she wanted a one on

one. she picked up 40%, but she's the former governor of south carolina. trump was strong, 60%. yes, it was not the 30, 35-point differential predicted, but a 20-point win. i'll tell you, i looked at a recent poll, and 2/3 of the republicans in that poll said they would go ahead and vote for donald trump, even if he is convicted of a felony. now, that's what i call loyalty. they are with him no matter what. i think democrats have to face that. >> haley, i believe one of her main sticking points is people will not vote for someone who is convicted oh of a felony. but that proves otherwise. >> yes, but remember, those are republicans, right? those are republicans. so the question is, what happens to independents? what happens to democrats? will republicans be enough? we know that republicans are the best when it comes to loyalty. they have much higher enthusiasm
