storm ranger is tracking the rain so let's get your chief meteorologist. when there's a big storm here and in the sierra this one seems to be hitting lake tahoe much more heavily than us here? >> it's all about the way this storm system is moving in. when you talk about the way this comes forward all of the atmospheric river is coming in from the subtropics and this one is dropping down directly from the arctic so this is why it's able to wrap up the cold air and hit the sierra much harder than what we will see here. on-again and off-again wet weather will be here we just started to see things get going today moderate rain and a few areas of heavy pockets. keeping rain with you in walnut creek through 5:47.

solution. >> it seemed almost too good to be true for those desperately searching for site for site parking. they were happy until they got hit with sticker shock. san jose signed a 10 year lease on the six acre lots. from toronto realty and in june of 2023 to build the city's biggest safe parking lot for more than 80 rvs used by the un- housed. after months of delay matt may handset it was time to confront the additional rising cost of putting up buildings, utilities, sewage and services. >> and that means not being afraid to admit when someone else is doing the work. and clearly a $50 million prize tag for the safe parking site would not work. city leaders have announced they redesigned the site cutting the cost of the project by around 7 to 8 million. emphasizing no programs or services will be lost but workers will go from four buildings to two buildings. >> i think they should be used to it. this was ambitious in terms of

the types of buildings. and i think they will be just fine. >> david cohen had to overcome community resistance to the project and says that rvs parked in those neighborhoods will be moved in first. they will have priority for the site but even if you do that half the people here will have the opportunity to use this for other crucial locations across the city. some of the neighborhoods that have been complaining will actually benefit from this. in a big picture from destination home and santa clara county continuum of care it shows how difficult it is to keep up. in 2023 they were able to move 2500 families into permanent housing and almost 30% of a jump with 43,000 households falling into homelessness during that same timeframe. they say that shows they need to respond faster to the newly un-housed. >> the behavior health issues like addiction and other forms of mental illness do increase it becomes harder to help those

people get back to self- sufficiency. >> city leaders hope to open this new site by fall. the man the mayor plants have a forum on this project as well as other proposed sites on march 11th. in san jose, nbc bay area news. the man accused in a half moon bay shooting is back in court today. investigators say he gunned down seven colleagues last january. it happened on mushroom farms where they worked. he pled not guilty in court today. but at what point last year when he confessed during exclusive jailhouse interview but he is still in custody on nobel status. he is set to return to court on april 19th. a political showdown. many are along the border less than a week before the super tuesday primary. immigration and security issues.

this direction is what i'm going to talk to you about today. the history of marin city. they build the ships for world war ii. this is a tiny unincorporated marin county community tucked in between south toledo and marin county. it is a town that came to life during world war ii as housings for those laboring here turned out cargo and taker ships for the war. >> there were 20,000 black people who worked in the shipyards. >> this month they lead student tours inside the office of education in san rafael.

i am seeing about six feet high. this is where it gets treacherous with snow totals going up to potentially nine feet. an additional 2 to 3 feet of snow going into the saturday forecast. snow levels down to 2000 feet. snowbanks that would be up higher than my head throughout the sierra is going to make it impossible to travel on. as we had through tonight tomorrow and saturday that's why we are getting this across the bay area. there is that polar air across california and that's why it's getting hit the hardest. rain at times is a little bit

heavier with some shower activity. we have most of that activity now in the peninsula. we will put a track on this and it will continue into concord was san mateo to sunnyvale. that will continue into fremont through 6:08's tonight. as we had through this evening you will keep that rain through the south bay. but overall it will be a little bit of a break around 11:00. hit and miss rainfall and that is the difference with this storm system undergoing some breaks and scattered rain for that morning commute. heavy rain coming through the north bay and moving down to the south bay with some wind gusts on friday around 50

rainfall totals with this as we go through tomorrow lesser amount to symphysis go on the south. by sunday it will taper off for us with trace amounts to a quarter of an inch. the wind gusts you will see another burst of wind through friday. and then as we go through sunday's forecast the wind will taper on down. for tomorrow morning we will start with the temperatures in the 40s. at the level your daytime highs only in the 50s for tomorrow's forecast. right here in san francisco we will see showers tapering off going into sunday evening. dry on monday with a few more
