"early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you are with me, i'm frances rivera. many residents out west are snowed in this morning after the biggest snowstorm of the season pummeled the sierra nevada region for three days. on sunday an avalanche came

crashing down on several cars south of lake tahoe, thankfully no one was injured. drivers battled life-threatening whiteout conditions on the road shutting down interstate 80 for miles. workers have been working tirelessly to clear the roads and massive tow trucks had to be brought in to rescue tractor-trailers stranded in snow drifts that went up their windows. many semis were completely stranded on saturday. one couple described their harrowing experience driving through the snow. >> i thought we were going to get stuck a few times. it kind of felt like we were, like, swimming through the snow almost. >> and while ski resorts were shut down, some skiers got cabin fever, despite the deadly avalanche risks. >> the storm has been pretty crazy, i've mostly just been hanging out inside but today we're going to go ski some mellow tree lines and help flow avoid the avalanches. >> and the region is expecting another storm today that could dump even more snow in the

mountains. let's bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman who is tracking that system for us. >> that never ending snow machine, we are not going to see the amount of snow we saw over the weekend, with he saw 7, 8 feet of snow, over 40 inches in some spots in just 24 hours. we will see 1 to 20 feet in the highest elevations, could cause some problems with whiteout conditions, blizzard conditions and possible travel. that's the story today. another system will impact the west coast today, tuesday, into wednesday. we are going to see heavy rain along the coast, could see 1 to 3 inches of rain on top of really saturated grounds. as we go throughout tomorrow the snow showers extending across the rocky, steady coastal rain bringing the possibility for flash flooding on wednesday. then the shift is down to the south, the bull's-eye in southern california, we could see the heavy rain there as well. we are waking up to winter alerts, blizzard warnings in effect, some of these impacts are through wednesday. more about this and also talking about a big time warm up,

springlike in the eastern part of the nation in just a few minutes. >> thank you, michelle. speaking in selma, alabama, in a commemoration of bloody sunday vice president kamala harris also addressed the situation in gaza. she demanded more aid to be let in and deliveredthe biden administration's most direct appeal yet for a ceasefire. >> given the immense scale of suffering in gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks. >> for the latest let's go to claudio lavanga. good morning. what's the latest on ceasefire talks? >> reporter: good morning, frances. if you remember last week after taping "late night with seth meyers" president biden said he was hopeful that a ceasefire would be reached by today. well, that turned out to be wishful thinking because talks of a ceasefire have stalled again, this time because israel

has decided not to send in the end its delegation to cairo for the latest round of negotiations because it said that hamas did not send israel the final list of hostages still in gaza. as you mentioned, kamala harris has called for a ceasefire that lasts at least six weeks, that is the time frame that is on the negotiating table right now, and because she said, as she said many times, too many palestinians have now died and are starving, but perhaps the strongest message that the biden administration has sent to benjamin netanyahu is not another call for a ceasefire, they've done that many times, but kind of a veiled or not so veiled diplomatic threats to netanyahu. they invited to washington benny gantz who is a war cabinet minister but also one of the leaders to the opposition to benjamin netanyahu and while the white house is saying that he was invited as part of a delegation of senior israeli officials to talk about the war in gaza and the aftermath,

analysts say that it's kind of an endorsement to benny gantz, the possible replacement of benjamin netanyahu as israel's prime minister. and the proof of that is that at least according to israeli media, netanyahu is furious about that invitation. frances? >> claudio, thank you. now to breaking news in the race for the white house. nikki haley has notched her first win in the fight for the nomination. nbc news projects she has won all 19 delegates in the washington, d.c. republican primary. nbc's brie jackson joins us from d.c. hi, brie. haley made election history with this win. >> good morning, frances. this makes nikki haley the first woman to ever win a republican primary, just over 2,000 washington republicans cast ballots in this primary and they tend to be more moderate voters, making this one of the weakest contests for former president trump. haley also seemed to reverse course sunday on a pledge she made to the rnc, saying on nbc's "meet the press" that she no

longer feels bound to the agreement to support the eventual nominee. >> are you bound by the rnc pledge? >> the rnc pledge, i mean, at the time of the debate we had to take it to where would you support the nominee and in order to get on that debate stage you said yes. the rnc is not the same rnc. >> you are no longer bound by that pledge. >> no i think i will make whatever decision i want to make but that's not something i'm thinking about. >> overnight donald trump responded to haley, posting on social media that he enjoys watching her disavow the rnc pledge saying, quote, she ran, she lied and she lost big. trump notched more victories of his own this weekend with caucus wins in michigan, idaho and missouri. now both campaigns are focused on super tuesday tomorrow when 16 states in american samoa will hold contests. trump is favored to win across the board which would give him nearly enough delegates to lock up the nomination, but not

quite. frances? >> we will be watching. big day tomorrow. brie, thank you. later this morning we could learn whether trump will be on the ballot in one super tuesday state. the supreme court is set to release decisions today likely among them is the highly anticipated ruling on whether trump can be kicked off the colorado ballot. in december the colorado supreme court ruled trump was ineligible citing the constitution's insurrection clause, but the decision was put on hold until the supreme court weighs in. the justices' final ruling is expected not only to affect colorado but also illinois and another super tuesday state, maine. both have also removed trump from the ballot. today the suspect in last year's big leak of classified pentagon documents is expected to lead guilty in a federal court in boston according to a court fueling. 22-year-old jack teixeira initially pleaded not guilty in june to willfully taking and spreading national defense information online. an investigation determined that he acted alone but the military
