in a matter of hours. also, more snow and not in the sierra. snow falling in parts of the bay area over the weekend. our cinthia pimentel is tracking how the forecast is shaping up for the rest of the week. this is "today in the bay." >> thanks so much for joining us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. >> and i'm marcus washington. we first begin with breaking news this morning, and this is what's happening here in the north bay. a large sheriffs presence at two separate scenes, the first on stony point road in sonoma county and the second on todd road west of the freeway. both of those areas are expected to remain shut down for the next several hours, and the sheriff's office is asking commuters to avoid that area. so far, no other information is being released. our own ginger conejero saab is heading to the scene and will have a live report for us in our next half hour. we're going to turn to

cinthia pimentel because you are looking at what we can expect weather-wise. >> we've had four days of some really active weather, but right now things are starting to calm down for our monday. yes, there are some areas of light rain at this hour. with stormranger we can zoom through parts of san francisco, along 880, some slick roads that you do have to be careful of. as we take a look at the peninsula mountains, also some light rain. approaching morgan hill and gilroy, you're going to be met with slick roadways. some very light rain chances as we get our workweek started. it is chilly. in the north bay we have a frost advisory as temperatures start in the 30s this morning, and another place that's cold but getting a little bit better is the sierra. some isolated snow showers for today. i'll walk you through the rest of the microclimate coming up. we're looking toward -- cinthia mentioned the sierra and i know that's farther out, but we still have the closure for

80. you still can't travel over the sierra on interstate 80 and i'm sure we'll talk more about that. we had a traffic break, i believe it's just completed because we're back to green sensors for southbound 880. there was some slowing closer to the 237 flyover as well, so we'll track the entire area for more updates. so far, it does sound like everything is off to the shoulder. the bay bridge toll plaza shows slicker conditions. there was a disabled vehicle coming off of that flyover off of the 880 transition, but we're looking at a smooth drive now. slick conditions continue, of course. >> thank you, mike. heavy snow coming down in the sierra. you probably could have guessed that. but there's also some snow falling near the south bay. one peak getting several inches of snow, mount hamilton. typically the roadway is closed when there is snowfall there. not yesterday, so as you might imagine, dozens of people drove up the winding road to lick observatory to play in the snow.

for some, it was quite a milestone. >> very cold, but first time seeing it, so happy, happy for that. >> it was fantastic. i kind of want to eat it, make an ice cream or something. something special. >> you forget sometimes people have not seen it. for some people, they drove more than an hour to play in the snow, other people ditched the beach to go up the mountain. the final sprint is on heading into super tuesday. for republicans, voters in more than a dozen states head to the polls in about 24 hours. and while former president donald trump is edging closer to a rematch with president joe biden, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley is not giving in. >> she is celebrating her first primary win in the nation's capitol, washington, d.c., making her the first ever woman to win a republican primary. here is "today in the bay"'s brie jackson. >> reporter: the countdown to super tuesday is on. >> if you want to save america,

then go vote. remember, the primary is tuesday. >> as long as we are competitive, as long as we are showing that there is a place for us, i'm going to continue to fight. >> reporter: former president trump has dominated the republican contest so far. despite that, nikki haley vows to push ahead, saying she no longer feels bound by the rnc pledge to endorse trump if he does become the nominee. >> i think i'll make what decision i want to make, but that's not something i'm thinking about. >> reporter: on tuesday, voters across more than a dozen states will weigh in, with more than 800 delegates up for grabs. the former u.n. ambassador is looking to build momentum, after picking up her first primary win sunday in the nation's capital. i spoke with republicans about what's at stake for the party. >> i think under trump we had a stellar economy and our military was strong and useful and our

border was secure, or at least in the process of becoming more secure. >> i think nikki haley might have a better chance of getting a coalition together to beat trump and get the nomination, which would be very important. >> i think we all definitely are going to be a stronger party if they both stay in and we have this process play out. >> reporter: tuesday could be make or break for haley's campaign, as she looks to stop former president trump's march to the gop nomination. in washington, brie jackson, nbc news. and candidates hoping to represent california in the u.s. senate are urging voters to cast their ballots. two of the major candidates in the race were campaigning in san francisco over the weekend. representative katie porter spoke at manny's in san francisco, saying that she believes this will be a close race. representative adam schiff is making stops in san francisco and san jose today. yesterday he also spoke with a group in the city.

he was introduced by speaker emerita nancy pelosi, who has endorsed him and he says he's feeling good about the polling numbers heading into the primary. the other major democrat in the race, barbara lee, said she spent the weekend campaigning in southern california. republican and former baseball star steve garvey did not respond to our request for comment. most of the voters told us they were still undecided. >> i want to see a vision for what california can do better, and i want to be excited as a young person. we've had some older senators in the past and i'm looking for a younger person with some vision to kind of show us the way. >> with many of california's ballots yet to be turned in, each of the candidates know there is still time for them to campaign, and perhaps change minds. we have an entire section on our website dedicated to the upcoming election. you can use the qr code on your screen to go to that page directly.

"today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us live from outside the d.a.'s office in dublin, and, bob, recall organizers say they have now enough signatures to get that on the ballot. >> reporter: correct. good morning, to you, kris. that group called save alameda county for everyone says it has collected over 123,000 signatures for the petition to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price, who critics say is antilaw enforcement and too soft on crime. plans to submit the signatures they've been collecting from the public over the past several weeks, submitting them to the county's registrar of voters after a news conference later this morning in oakland. the county will take ten days to

validate those signatures, and if certified, the board of supervisors will then schedule a special election. only 73,000 signatures are required, but the group collected more in case some of those signatures are invalidated. d.a. price has defended her approach to criminal justice reform, saying, quote, back in december, to hold people accountable without destroying the community, without decimating black and brown families because of the racism that has infected the criminal justice system. that was back in december and she was outlining her goals as alameda county district attorney. now, the "chronicle" reports that last week supporters of price, they went to the state attorney general, rob bonta, and they asked him to investigate reports of, quote, widespread fraud by signature gatherers, which the recall campaign denies. reporting live outside alameda county district attorney's office here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so many people watching that.

thank you, bob. happening today, mayor matt mahan joins state lawmaker josh becker to announce new legislation tackling the unhoused cries. the act would streamline construction, making it easier to transition individuals and families to the path of permanent housing. the event take place at the site of a recently finished interim housing site in san jose on evans lane, using converted shipping containers for homes on city-owned land. the event starts at 9:30 this morning and we'll have a live interview with one of the leaders ahead in our streaming newscast. we're thinking about what's on that radar. looking live out at san francisco this morning, cinthia pimentel here for kari hall this morning. we were talking about that low falling snow in san jose. what are we looking at today? >> it's going to be beautiful, once we do clear out of this rain toward the mountains. to start, we're going to be

temperatures will only reach 53 degrees. we'll talk about rain chances through the midweek. you see a little glow, it might not be rain, but it is going to make damp pavement. the bay bridge moving smoothly right now. we're going to focus on what is going on, there's a couple of crashes i'm monitoring coming up. good morning. very happy monday to you. the nasdaq will start the week near an all-time high. congress has revealed -- the european union has slapped apple music with a fine for, quote, abusing its position. they say apple prevented users from learning about alternative music players like spotify that might offer lower cost music. it's one of the largest fines for a technology company ever.

a new wall street journal poll says more americans are feeling better about the economy but more than two-thirds think inflation is headed in the wrong direction, despite the fact it's not. inflation is down and continues to shrink. fed chairman jay powell will testify before the senate on thursday, a regularly-scheduled appointment where he'll talk about inflation and the plan on interest rates. then we'll get the monthly jobs report on friday. these reports have been much better than expected. in fact, most of the economic news we have gotten in the last six months or so has generally been better than expected. four nasa astronauts are headed to the international space station. they launched over the weekend, hitching a ride on a spacex rocket. two americans, two russians. we're still cooperating with russia when it comes to space. they should arrive to the station around midnight tonight. it was awesome to listen to

the crew and the excitement. you heard matt dominic make several calls to the ground relative to the abort boundaries going up the hill. it was great to hear matt's voice. you could tell they were really excited on their way to the international space station. >> meantime, the crew of the next artemis mission are training. this first one, they're going to go around the moon, but they're not going to land. it will be like apolo 8 in, what, 1968? we're doing it all over again, learning it, because apparently our grandfathers didn't write it down, and grandmothers. >> it's like circling trying to find a parking spot for lunchtime. iowa's caitlin clark is now in the history books, making her bark in division 1 college basketball as the ncaa's

love you as long as i breathe. >> you will never lose me as long as you stay who you are. >> positive reviews. >> the dune voice. >> positive reviews and word-of-mouth really pushing this movie to the top spot. the stars, timothee chalamet and zendaya. this film has sold $97 million in ticket sales, bringing the tally to $178 million just for the opening weekend. i'm sure those investors are really happy about that because that is nearly the cost of what it took to make that movie. >> wow. >> so the follow-up was set to be released last year but it was pushed back due to the actors' strike. it's bringing a boost to slumping movie theatres. the ceo of imax says the numbers could have been bigger but they ran out of seats. >> that's a good problem. >> and imax, our producer said, is the way to see that movie. >> it's so expansive.

>> i'm going to watch it on my couch. >> that big screen tv. >> we did watch a lot of movies this weekend. >> people were trying to find a warm, dry place. we're also looking for a warm dry place to start our monday. there is rain being picked up on stormranger, our mobile doppler radar, through san francisco, parts of richmond. albany down to the bay bridge, it is a slick commute. but it's very light, nothing we can't handle. as we go to the peninsula, slick roadways through 101 and 280, and down sunol there is light spotty showers, but nothing too bad. we've four days of rain and it really started on thursday. some of the measurements have been higher through parts of the north bay. mill valley almost 2 1/2 inches of rain, but higher totals through calistoga. everybody saw about three-quarters of an inch to maybe an inch of rain in concord. really, the santa cruz mountains, 3 to 5 inches of rain.

so it's been a really wet couple of days. we're going to be in for a few more spotty rain showers throughout the day. we're starting in the low 30s in the north bay. as we go throughout the day, it's still going to stay cold, but mainly towards parts of lake county. the rest of us will warm up just a touch, as we've been seeing some really cold days. temperatures today, 57 in oakland, 59 in san jose and 56 over in fairfield. we'll keep those overcast skies as we go throughout the day. most of the activity should hang near the north bay as the system tries to make its way into the middle part of the week. we'll start with slick roadways for tuesday and spotty showers, but it won't be until we get to wednesday when we start to see the system that will hug the coastline for many of us and then kind of dip to the south as we go throughout the day. and we really want to keep on talking about what's going on in the sierra, as we do have areas highlighted in pink, the winter storm warning will go from this morning until wednesday. still spotty snow showers as people try to make their return

into the sierra along 80 and 50. going through the rest of the week, we finally get a chance to dry out and see more sunshine as we go into thursday and friday. then another system drops in as we go through saturday. your sunday plans look dry for now. the seven-day forecast, we're going to see unsettled weather as we go through today, tuesday and wednesday. better clearing for thursday. san francisco, you'll still need the jacket and umbrella as we deal with cooler temperatures. inland valleys, slightly warming up as we get to the end of the week. mike, what are you looking at, a little water? >> a little water is not going to hurt you but it is something to be aware of. we have a nice smooth drive heading north. southbound, you see more lanes, the commute direction, and you see the water spraying up because these tires have good tread and that's what those tires are designed to do. that will be the case in many patches of the bay as cinthia has shown you. the rain is still going down the peninsula as well and that will

it is 5:25. this morning we are celebrating women's history month, and we begin with a spotlight on a book which is helping empower young black women. "i am, i can, i will" is a guided journal helping to spark self-discovery. it's filled with quotes, mantras and stories from historical black women. the book is split into three sections and it's meant to guide the reader and show them what they're capable of. we talked with dr. cynthia jacobs carter, one of the co--writers of that book. >> it's good to see some positive stories, especially about women and girls, who aspired to do something different in their lives, to go from point a to point z.

i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off this monday morning. we want to start with a look at the forecast because it is ever changing. we see more rain on your radar. >> yeah, we are into a new month, new workweek. we've got to get everybody prepared this morning. in the overnight hours we have seen mostly cloudy skies, a few spotty showers that we can show you on stormranger, our mobile doppler radar, to help you go about your morning commute. mostly through san francisco into south city and along the bay bridge, you're going to be met with cars picking up water in front of you, moving down 101 and 280, just some light rain to handle. as you make your approach through sunol into the south bay, things are starting to clear up. in dublin, planning our day, we are starting pretty chilly in low 40s and we'll continue with overcast skies. grab a jacket, maybe one with a hood in case you see drizzle. we're going to see times of rain, mostly overcast skies as we go through the middle portion

of the week. ahead i do have better news for those of you that love the sunshine. there will be a late week break with slightly warmer temperatures. then we do have rain turning in the seven-day forecast. we have it all. mike is here with the bay bridge. >> we have typical slowing right now, damp conditions. we're looking at this portion of i-80 locally. through the sierra we still have that closure, but that might mean local traffic is a little lighter because some folks may not have been able to come back to work. a smooth flow of traffic shows you the green highlighting in san francisco and in the east bay, as cinthia talked about. we're still dealing with damp roadways. north 101 at fair oaks, this crash is off of the roadway. in fact, this car is stuck in the mud on the side of the roadway. watch for conditions and watch the shoulders of the roadways should you need to pull over. >> thanks, mike. first, we are following

breaking news in santa rosa where there's a large sheriff's office presence at two separate scenes. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is there this morning, joining us live. ginger, we know this is kind of a developing scene. have you been able to find anything out? >> reporter: we are working to confirm some of these details. what we know at this point is that a number of roads here in santa rosa are closed, and before i go through the details of which roads those are, i want to take your attention to a small line of cars right behind us that are pulled over to the side of the road. i was just speaking to a truck driver not so long ago, he says he's waiting here because he needs to get to his truck to start his workday. unfortunately, that can not happen because roads are closed. now, let's talk about which roads they are. we are at todd road and moreland, todd road between stony point road and moreland avenue is indefinitely closed,

as is stony point road south, and police are asking commuters to avoid the area. we do not know much at this point, we are working to confirm some more details. but there are two different crime scenes. video shows a number of law enforcement vehicles, including san jose police, chp and sheriff's office vehicles at both scenes. there was also sonoma county -- or there were two sonoma county sheriffs vehicles seen at santa rosa memorial hospital. again, we are working to learn more details and have reached out to the sheriff's office. moments ago, i also spoke with santa rosa police. they are not giving us a time at this point of when they'll be giving an update. as soon as we have the update, we'll bring that to you. you can download our nbc bay area app for the latest. we're live in santa rosa, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay."

>> a very tough way to start a monday. thank you. we know you'll ask more questions. happening today, the four men accused in the deadly shooting of an oakland police officer, this was back in late december, they're due back in court. officer tuan le died while responding to a burglary at a cannabis dispensary. last week authorities added murder charges, his bail was revoked, and all four are due in court today for a preliminary hearing. one group of south bay firefighters briefly played the role of law enforcement after someone broke into their firehouse over the weekend. it happened saturday night at fire station 8 in san jose near roosevelt park. police say a thief stole gear and personal items after kicking in a door. officers managed to make an arrest a short time later, but that's because firefighters just happened to be returning from an emergency call. after noticing the damaged door, they caught that man on his way out. >> they noticed that he was

carrying some items with him, a laptop and some other items. the subject went into the creek, through some of the items in the water. the crew from station 8, they called san jose police because of the break-in, eventually san jose police apprehended the subject. >> firefighters believe that that man is unhoused and they say this is not the first time that someone has broken into their fire station. crews also experienced a string of recent vehicle break-ins. blizzard conditions in sierra nevada are impacting major roadways. yesterday caltrans briefly closed highway 50, leaving drivers in the snow. it's now back open after crews cleared the road. caltrans says the i-80 between colfax and the border are still closed but it could reopen later today. we spoke with some drivers who were caught in the snow. >> we might as well just park it right here and relax for tonight

and try and get out tomorrow morning. >> i really thought it looked like we might be able to get through, or maybe they might let local people through. but it doesn't appear that they're allowing anybody to go. so it must be kind of rough up there. >> we did talk about that on friday, i'm just saying. here is a live look this morning. it looks like a winter wonderland. beautiful sights. this is a look at highway 50, running through heavenly village. it remains open at the time being, but stick with us because we'll let you know if there are going to be any changes throughout the day. we're talking about a lot of snow up there. >> a lot of snow. this is a live camera over our palisades resort cam, and through the weekend it was just completely whiteout conditions. today a slight improvement. we can finally see a little bit more into the distance, and hopefully as the sun comes up this morning we'll see that mountain right behind there.

conditions are slightly improving. we do still have this winter storm warning in the area shaded in pink, so once you're coming down 80 or 50, you could be met with some rough conditions. so just take it slow. this will be with us this morning into wednesday. if you notice some areas shaded in blue, as you make your way into the southeastern part of the sierra, that is the avalanche warning for around mammoth lakes. some heavy snow and gusty winds have come through the mountains over the last couple of days. we could see another chance of light snow showers as we go through the next couple of hours, taking totals about 1 to 3 inches. compared to the feet that stacked up, this is doable. something that's impressive is we're approaching that 100% of average snowpack through all of these regions, the northern one almost there, and as we go into central and south, we are starting to creep up there. compared to last year, we're still a little ways behind, but we definitely have more on the

way. mike, the backup is building at the bay bridge. >> yeah, we had a backup and more on the way here to the bay bridge toll plaza, right as we would expect the timing. this happened over the last ten minutes. that's a slower drive across the span, incline and decline toward the city. that's why they slowed the metering lights, to keep the span moving smoothly. wet roadway continues. highway 37, a new crash around mur island. we have slowing around the willow off-ramp and it is a distraction and it could cause slowing through hercules. it keeps traffic moving slower for richmond. the rest of the bay, a smooth drive. we are looking toward the tri-valley. no major issues. the crash still reported at the vasco transition onto 580. 580 moves as you would expect. the good news is we have one-way traffic control continuing for 84. it's still open, but it's still going to have some slowdowns and

there. the wind has died down a bit, so no longer than issue for the san mateo bridge. we'll check out the rest of your commute coming up. big changes are coming to san quentin starting this spring, when, according to the department of corrections and rehabilitation, demolition work would begin on the governor's plans to transform the oldest and most notorious prison in california into a rehabilitation and education center. as you might recall, governor gavin newsom made the initial announcement last year. $240 million have been budgeted for the transformation of the prison, which is expected to be complete in 2026. rehabilitation work continues for the people who are incarcerated inside san quentin's walls. one local nonprofit is turning to social media to collect stories from previous or current inmates. their team hopes connections on social media can offer some healing. >> they don't have the opportunity to ever be heard by

colorado and maine can keep trump off the ballot, prohibiting those who engage in insurrection from holding office. that part of the constitution is not very clearly written. it definitely says, no insurrectionists can hold office, and it lists a whole lot of offices, but, weirdly, skips the mention of the president. and then, while, again, it says no insurrectionists can hold office, it doesn't say who makes the decision about who is or who is not an insurrectionist. most court watchers think the decision today will reject the state's arguments and keep trump on the ballots. the colorado primary election is tomorrow, part of super tuesday. trump won michigan, idaho and missouri's republican primaries over the weekend. if the experts are right and this goes trump's way, the thing to watch will be how the court arrives at that decision. it's going to have to do some legal gymnastics to somehow

uphold the constitution, while at the same time saying what the constitution says doesn't count. again, the court decision comes at 7:00 a.m. our time, and nbc will provide a special report. also today, the chief financial officer for the trump company will be in court. our reporters speculate he will plead guilty to lying on the stand. he's already served 100 days in jail for 15 counts of tax fraud related to the trump organization. the white house says vice president harris will meet with israeli war cabinet member benny gantz in washington today. harris joining the president in calling for a cease-fire in gaza as she spoke over the weekend in alabama. and progress in congress, which has introduced six bills to keep the government open, passed friday. the house and senate still have to pass those bills, but leaders say they're going to get it done. >> so, again, good news. of course the clock is now ticking, we have to pass this bill by friday. but the fact that the four

leaders, house, senate, democrat and republican, have reached an agreement, bodes well that the government will not run out of funds and shut down. >> there's another set of bills that have to be passed mid month to ensure the rest of governor stays open but, all in all, very positive moves forward. up until now they've been repeatedly kicking the can down the road. now they're actually accomplishing something. these bills have to be passed, but they exist. >> maybe it's that extra leap day they got. >> maybe so. >> thanks, scott. a bay area native is punching her ticket to paris, the first athlete to qualify for the tennis table team. she grew up on the peninsula and she's headed to the paris olympics this summer, her fourth olympic games. jiang directly qualified because she is the highest ranked female table tennis player in all of the united states. she is also in the top 50 of the

through the central bay, so approaching san francisco, parts of 880 as you make your approach into hayward. the east bay, it is a little more spotty and very light, parts of concord, pleasant hill and walnut creek. and taking it further south, the rain showers have started to move on, approaching los altos at this time. the santa cruz mountains picking up on rain that could be heavy at times as we look at the spots in yellow. aside from the rain, it will continue to be chilly as we get the front officially moving through. as we go into our temperatures, it's still going to be feeling winter-like as we take a look at 57 in martinez, 55 in livermore, as well as in santa rosa, and 59 degrees down here in san jose. walking you forward through the rest of the forecast hour-by-hour, the activity today is mainly going to be to the north bay. we're going to get overcast skies. as we go into early tuesday, similar to what we're starting with this morning, spotty rain showers for the early morning commute. the system is tending to stick to parts of northern california,

and it will try to drop down as we go into wednesday. we could be looking at that system pushing on through through parts of the south bay as we go into the afternoon. now, as far as the rest of the week, we are looking at that forecast through the rest of the week, showers move down through the southern part of the state, giving us better clearing for thursday and friday. the sierra continues to be stormy. we have a winter storm warning through at least wednesday and we'll be measuring snow totals very much lighter than we've seen the last couple of days. with that system the middle of the week, it could drive totals up to 14 inches in kingvale. our forecast continues to be active in san francisco, 50s and 60s, with better clearing, better news for sunshine as we go into late week. mike, we're seeing traffic through richmond? >> we're seeing more and it typically ramps up. cinthia, you mentioned that winter storm warning. you and kari warned folks about
