10:05 pm
also been a surgeon republican registrations, without registered democrats in california over the last month, it's been an exciting time, we are super excited about this. >> let's look in november, that's work matters, that's where the winner goes to the senate, up against adam schiff, these two people could be more different, adam schiff will probably be getting a lot of the kitty porter votes and barbara lee votes, if that happens, what chance does steve garvey have, what does he have to do to get the win in november? >> the democrats have a much higher registration but a low turnout night and the internet will be much higher for the presidential election. and i think steve garvey will appeal to a lot of centrists, no party preference people and even centrist democrats. he has done well in every single debate, after every debate is pulling his got up, i expecting him to be formidable in november. >> thank you for taking the

time in helping us tonight.>> the trinity bar, and it's been a good night in a town where there are not many republicans, the percent, and 8% are republican, having to celebrate in a statewide victory for the candidates. steve garvey, back to you. >> thank you very much terry, this talk what the other candidates in the race, on long beach, the watch party, the congress woman running for the senate seat, she came up with 50% of the vote so far, she's not going to be advancing to the november election, it will be adam schiff and steve garvey, but this is what she said a short time ago. >> i want to thank each and everyone of you, really, each and every one of you, for the support you have shown me in this campaign and over the years. our success over the last six years has shown is that californians and americans are hungry for leaders who break the mold.

>> in these pay now, a summer night for representative barbara lee. nbc's project -- rejecting she will not advance to the general election, a big name in the bay area but it didn't translate, at least this time, for statewide support. >> this has been a phenomenal multiracial and multiple generational -- multigenerational movement, and i want to thank everyone for their help. >> another high-profile and big- money rays, who is going to replace longtime congresswomen anna ashooh, 30 years she's been in the house of representatives, district 16, the peninsula into the south bay. >> a lot of big names, let's show you some of the results, we will get to those in just a moment. this is what the former san jose mayor and evan lows in here as well, let's bring in a reporter, the former mayor at
10:08 pm
his watch party.>> and outside the watch party, it's inside, i was able to talk for a few minutes, really excited, also very tired and hoping for the best, one of the favorites tonight. wanting to take a look at the images, when we were inside the watch party he talks to the media and said he is the person that should go to congress, because he was the mayor of san jose for eight years, he has experience, he knows how to deal with the housing crisis, the homeless crisis, he can bring that nationwide. and also asked him, how do you prepare for the reason this is what he had to say. >> we had to sprint from a standing stop in this one. the good news is, i've been through a battle or two before. as the mayor of the city of million people. it certainly helps to have that kind of experience going into
10:09 pm
this.>> reporter: now this is a very important race because whoever is elected is going to be able to make changes nationwide, now the person is going to be able to write bills, vote for bills and also he was telling me that he's the right person for this because he also speaks spanish, he's illegal and of the latino community and their struggles, and hoping for the best, and we will be contending with them tonight and see how those results go. back to you guys. >> thank you. here are the results right now in the district 16, we set a lot of high-profile names, the former mayor, sam liccardo with 20 preset -- 23%. and joe simitian in second, but evan low is very optimistic, the former mayor of cupertino, and 60% of the vote, very close for the second spot between
10:10 pm
simitian and low. >> is running in third place, we caught up with him tonight in cupertino. he says even though these are the numbers right now, he is staying very optimistic and he's going to do so until the very end>> is an exciting moment in time to see democracy in action. i'm hopeful we can see more of a turnout, the trends are still to be told.>> and that is evan low. and move on to a different seat, we told you barbara lee is not moving forward but she did have to give up her congressional seat to be able to try to run for dianne feinstein prophecy. district 12, that show you what those results are right now, simon right now has 43% of the vote, following her, jennifer tran with 80% of the vote, those two will be the ones who will move forward it looks like but we don't know completely, we will have to see how things

break out. and is also tony daysog with 50%. chris. talk about the presidential primary, nbc news is called a win for trump and present by in california. setting up for a possible rematch in november but it doesn't come as much of a surprise. >> the single biggest delegate grab of the season, 16 states and one territory up for grabs. it was a big night for the former president trump pulling away with wins in 12 states so far tonight, nikki haley winning in vermont, that was her soul victory tonight. that brings her total delegates to 92, esther trump is 946. needs about 269 more delegates to secure the republican nomination. a matter of formality now. he has many wondering if this could be nikki haley's last night the race.
10:12 pm
so far she is not mentioned about dropping out. she does not have many public campaign events this evening, that will certainly change tomorrow, while donald trump did address a crowd of his supporters at mar-a-lago a couple of hours ago. >> this is one of the finest run campaigns that everyone has ever seen, that's pretty good right. that is surely a statement. and we have no choice, because november 5, right around the corner, it's going to go down as the single most important day in the history of our country. >> president biden didn't give a speech night, instead he issued a statement, if donald trump returns the white house, all of this progress is at risk. he is driven by grievance and rift, focused on his own revenge and retribution, not the american people after tonight, the president needs 540 more delegates to win the nomination, he is the only
10:13 pm
democratic candidate to win delegate so far. let's bring in larry grierson and the linda jackson from san jose state, no present -- no surprises here, what so many voters have access concern about, is that why we didn't see so many people go to the polls, it seemed like a given from the beginning? figure each of these folks has a problem. trump is a problem because he has to get back those nikki haley voters, there pretty committed, a lot of them say they don't want trump, they don't want him. he has to win them back, he's got time to do, that's what is to do, on the other hand, biden has to mobilize those democrats that are just not excited about him. you can see this about trump, he has excited supporters, biden's supporters are lethargic, he has to mobilize them and bring them in, one has to win people back in the other has to bring in those of a sideline, they have a lot, each of them between now and november.>> and 24 to 48 hours.
10:14 pm
and bowing out in the race. she may decide to enter campaign with the next day or two, she did say she was going to stay in the race as long she was competitive, looking at the math, doesn't have a path to the nomination at this point, but she just has been showing us that trump support is not 100%. she had 40% of the vote in south carolina, even though not competitive in terms of winning it, has been showing us the softness of his support among some republicans. as larry says, looking at how those nikki haley voters decide to vote november as well as all of the independents and moderates, i would be surprised if nikki haley days in it much longer.
10:15 pm
but i think she's also thinking about her own future in republican politics, so the other big question is, will she endorse trump or not? because that's a big question. can i jump back to the 16th congressional district that race to replace an issue, -- anna ashooh. >> he's been in the bay area a long time, simidian, but was it the ricardo recognition as a san jose mayor that kind of boosted him and the excitement that he has about everything that he does? >> i think paul mitchell had it right earlier jessica, would he said there was a low turnout, which expected, that means the electorate will be skewed towards older people and whites, so you see them doing much better, and it probably has hurt evan low, still an opportunity for him to catch
10:16 pm
simitian. the turnout factors important, it's already lower in the primary, even lower than we expected, and the kind of action you got with simitian and liccardo will change forever low, are there certain precincts that will come in for him? >> it's hard to know, we do know this, the aapi community and the game activity are both invested in the election, we may see votes come in forever low, that we have not seen so far. it's hard to know, we don't know where they're coming from but two points is not a lot, depending how -- it depends on how much of the vote is in and ow much with to

10:36 pm
for several more days, just tomorrow, the of thousands of those go through, the signature and all that, it has been very exciting here, a family affair, helping out the media, dropping out ballots, -- dropping off ballots, they say they want to be part of the community and part of our democracy. back to you. >> with the registrar of voters there. >> who voted today, turnout was projected to be low, you figure it still is low, paul mitchell, based in sacramento, nice to have you back in the program. we've been talking about it for weeks, was the turnout low, as your company and others were projecting? >> as of today all the ballot that we know of that were received in process puts is only at 18%. of those ballots, 22 million male that had been returned as of earlier today, that does not count, all the people voting at
10:37 pm
the polls, and receiving and processing today and the balance that they will receive and process for the next few days as long as their smart by election day. we don't know eventual turnout for projecting it to be around 30%, which will be a low watermark for the state, and as low or even lower than the 2012 presidential primary, the other historic low. >> as far as november, 30% for march, november will double if not more? >> of the november election will be its own standalone election. this election there was no presidential contest on the democratic or republican side to speak of, and there were not people jumping out of bed saying it's election day. in november i think there will be competitive super competitive presidential races, and a nationalization of the election, everybody will be talking about it.
10:38 pm
so it will be the feeling like we had 2016-20, even 18, this might be the most important election of my lifetime, low turnout means really nothing about what it means in november. >> this talk about the 16 congressional race between adam schiff and steve garvey, the orchestrated a way that garvey rose up and gave him momentum, even steve garvey said you have to prepare for the rest of the race, it will be daunting for him. what are your expectations going forward. can garvey continue the momentum that was kind of orchestrated by adam schiff? >> when steve garvey entered the race i just looked at the basic math. about 40% of the vote in a low turnout election would be republican or independence vote republican, and if you could get 75% of the vote, being the only real republican, that anybody is talking about, he would be gifted automatically 20 or 30%
10:39 pm
of the actual final vote and that would be enough to get to the runoff. i was projected he would be in the runoff based on the math. the adam schiff campaign to spend a lot of money, expenditures for shiv, more money was spent promoting garvey in this race that has been spent on a republican at the statewide level in california since meg whitman in 2010. the big impact it might have the on the senate race is all the other races of the ballot, when you have heightened republican turnout like we had in this focus on the republican candidate in this race, it will impact a lot of down ticket races, we are already seeing this kind of garvey effect around the state where republicans are making it into runoffs in races that everyone expected would be to democrats garvey effect, that is, we will have to use that raise going in>> thank you for having me. >> let's talk to pete cerrato's,

10:43 pm
>> cindy chavez, district 2 is actually your seat because you are termed out, so as you look at both of these races, district 2 and also district 5, what really comes to mind for you, what you looking at? figure i'm excited to see the caliber of people running for the board of supervisors, it's so important, as you know, safety net services and covers the healthcare system in sheriff's department and social services agent, so i'm excited about that. i will tell you something else, when i served of the first day for the board of supervisors, there was five women, now seeing the women advancing, we were going to have one man, the opposite of what i got there. >> president biden said it's the hardest job in america to work for the county, and elected leader for the county, because your budget is always low.
10:44 pm
the struggle to raise, you know the candidate so low, liccardo and simitian. what are you looking at going forward? >> excellent caliber of candidates, smart and hard- working, all with great accomplishments. i do think it's interesting to me how much money was spent in the races, and who ended up where, if you look for example at mr. dixon office showing, it's very interesting, demonstrates that having a long history in the community outweighs how much money you've raised, and that's particularly true, for supervisor simitian and evan bell. >> do you think they will credit him for the asian experience or would be a detriment to him? >> a great question. a hardwood answer. mr. maturity great point about really thinking distinctly about both of these elections, both what people are thinking
