grove after a geyser of water started shooting up from the ground into the air. our christie smith is following the story we will take a look at what triggered this problem. the first of the new chinatown night markets is going on right now. it has started and what you need to know if you want to go join. we first talked to about rosa vans and cars sitting idle. now we have uncovered a line of idle buses that are out of use. we are investigating and the action that vta is taking to deal with the problem. the news at 5:00 -- rather, nbc bay area news at 5:30 starts now. >> we are going to start with a breaking news we have been following since the 4:00 hour. a brush fire is burning in antioch.

you can see how much black smoke this fire is generating. sky ranger has been over it over the last hour and this fire has grown to 18 acres and firefighters say they have no containment at this time. this is near the san joaquin river. it is about one mile north of the shopping center and it is generating a lot of lack smoke. no word on the cause but we do know that no structures are threatened at this time so that is good news. we will keep a close eye on this story but a brush fire burning in antioch. >> it looks like a blade -- big wall of lack smoke. >> in san francisco, the opposite. a water main break created quite a scene and a muddy mess. >> christie smith has been talking with neighbors about the geyser and all of the damage it has created. >> reporter: trucks have been moving in and out of the neighborhood all day after a water main break sent water

more than 50 feet into the air. tonight crews have stopped the leak. the question now is, why did it happen? an impromptu geyser created quite a scene. and more than a few problems. >> i was wondering why so many patrol cars were around and i thought something happened then i heard the helicopter as well. it was not until we walked down the street that we saw this huge water. >> it was shooting up maybe 50 feet in the air. within the hour officials were out here and they got it turned off and they are on the case. >> reporter: supervisor joel -- was here. >> there is some erosion so we have to be careful. >> reporter: the public utilities commission says the cause of the break appears to be the failure of an eight inch valve connected to a 60 inch water transmission line.

that feeds water from a treatment plant on the peninsula to the sunset reservoir. >> i hope that hillside is stable. >> reporter: it did not happen in stern grove boat water flowed into a dog park area. this is not the first time a water main break caused problems in the area. three years ago a water main break caused major damage in the same area. >> last year a bunch of trees came down and they just finally cleared it all up. >> reporter: officials are still trying to determine how long it will take to clean it up. christie smith, nbc bay area news. a water main break happened at menlo park today as well. you can see water there gushing under the sidewalk. crews fixed that leak this afternoon. if you are looking for evening plans you could head to

san francisco chinatown. the night market just kicked off. this is just getting started. dozens of vendors set up along several blocks of grant street. they are selling food and goods until 9:00. organizers say if you stop by there is a mini beer garden that you can visit. chinatown hosted a pair of night markets last year and organizers decided to do them again. we will see these markets monthly through the end of the year. more problems with vta vehicles just sitting. we are not talking about the previous cars and vans we talked about earlier. now there is a fleet of buses discovered that have been parked four years. >> reporter: similar to the previous and vans, they say the pandemic and staffing shortages caused a delay in auctioning off the buses. the buses were not neglected they say.

this is drone video above santa clara transportation authority lot in san jose. that row of buses lining defense are all retired. it just a handful of the dozens of buses the agency told those it decommissioned but did not auction off. they said they were in the process of seeking out a new auction house contractor and then the pandemic it. staff that usually prepare the buses for auction had to retrofit other buses with barriers, hand sanitizers and mask dispensers. satellite photo shows some of the buses have been sitting idle since 2018. our investigative unit has been asking to talk with vta staff about how the agency is trying to recoup some of the tens of millions of taxpayer dollars it spent on its now retired

vehicles. the agency turned us down again and told us in an email it has already auctioned off most buses with 18 still in the yard waiting to be processed. >> certainly, we are not --. >> reporter: it giovanni is a transportation specialist at uc davis. he says the pandemic it travel agencies hard, especially backend operations like reselling old vehicles. >> there had been big issues with the pandemic and changes in the market. >> reporter: vta does not expect to get much for the buses. brand-new they cost about half $1 million each and will likely sell for less than $1000. there is just very little demand for old retired buses. but it could be a very different story with a decommissioned fleet of 95 vta cars and vans that our investigative unit showed you in january. board chairperson cindy chavez

said, rather than leaving them parked on the lot, they should have tried to auction them off earlier. she says the agency has an obligation to get back as much money as they can. >> i worry that we missed an important opportunity. during covid-19 there was a big strain on supply chains and a high level of interest to be able to buy used automobiles. >> reporter: after our first reports, vta started the process to auction off those cars. an important step to get back on track post pandemic, which is no easy task. >> public agencies are called two different jobs and providing service and responsible use of public funding. >> reporter: the old buses were used. they each have about 1 million miles on them after being driven 15-20 years. even when not in a pandemic,

after a transit bus was involved in a car crash. nbc bay area sky ranger is overhead. this is that international and fourth. you can see this car is smashed up. the fire department just notified us and told us that 13 people are hurt. two of them critically. the 11 have minor injuries so 13 injuries, 11 with minor injuries and two critically. it looks like it is an ac transit bus and this vehicle, that is almost unrecognizable. emergency crews are on the scene right now. again, a car crash involving an ac transit bus and a vehicle at 54th and international boulevard. that intersection is shut down emma we have more information we will bring it to you here.

tuesday. another 10-18 inches of snow at about 5000 feet. a lot of that is coming down with the third storm system. tomorrow morning clouds will be back in a chance of seeing light rain showers at times. not as cold tomorrow morning. 40s and 50s to start in keeping with the cloudy conditions into the afternoon at about 54 degrees and upper 50s for the high around san francisco and into oakland. what we have is this weather system offshore, that is where the mostly cloudy skies will be coming from and during the morning hours, especially, that might be the best chance of rain. breeze clearing around sunset on saturday and then the clouds will fill back in as we go into sunday morning. by sunday afternoon, rain dropping in mendocino county and sonoma county, vice 6:00 sunday evening.

then the south bay by 11:00. sunday will have the higher weather producer. you can see saturday, the best rain chances in the north bay and then the sunday weather system brings anywhere from a quarter of an inch to maybe even less than that. it will be northwestern sonoma county that could pick up half an inch of rain. here is the third in the series coming in tuesday. more sierras no and then, if you like today, there is probably going to be a lot to like starting tuesday. high pressure building in leading to big-time warming about one week from now. look at the weekend here. again, showers this weekend and when we get to the second half of next week, mid and upper 70s and we could be staying there a while. we start to see the warm up materialize at the end of the 7 day forecast with chances of rain saturday, sunday, and

receive intelligence briefings after securing the gop. this despite mishandling classified documents. from one president to the other seamless. sources say the intelligence community will follow that practice when trump is nominated. the former president has been indicted and is facing charges right now that he kept classified documents after he left the white house. trump and his legal team have denied wrongdoing. the u.s. military is allowing special forces aircraft to fly again after a string of deadly crashes. the last one happened to off the coast of japan. eight airmen died. they were in an osprey. it was one of four crashes that happened in the last two years. in december -- prohibited the

transit bus and a car. first responders at 54th and international. at least 13 people are hurt and two critically. at this point we do not know exactly how all of this unfolded. we will continue to monitor the situation but again, it is a transit bus and a car. there is massive damage in the middle of the street and this is an area that you will want to avoid. two people injured and two critically. we do not know the condition of the bus driver so, again, we are unfolding what happened there and we will stay on top of it. when we have more information we will take you back over and give you another look. we will be on air and you can also check this out online. we are still following an emergency landing involving united airlines flight that took off from sfo and was headed for mexico city. about 90 minutes ago and had to land at lax. we
