the latest this morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. two national guard soldiers aon u.s. border patrol agent were killed in the crash according to the department of defense, at least one other soldier was seriously injured. this accident occurred friday afternoon and involved a uh-72 lakota helicopter that was conducting aviation operations in texas, about 30 miles from mccallan. officials confirming it was part of a federal southwest border mission. the national guard bureau chief offering his heartfelt condolences, writing all of these people represent the selfless service and the best of america. texas senator john cornyn adding he'll be monitoring for more details on how the tragedy happened. friday's crash is the latest in a string of helicopter accidents we've seen over the past two

years, including three fatal black hawk crashes that occurred in alaska, alabama and kentucky. the cause of yesterday's accident is still under investigation, and we do expect to learn the names of the deceased in the coming hours, after the next of kin has been notified, peter. >> our prayers are with those families and our hope that the other soldier can recover from their injuries. thank you. election day is still eight months away, but the longest presidential general election campaign in history is getting under way this morning, whether you like it or not. president biden and former president trump are both making appearances in the battleground state of georgia later today. white house correspondent aaron gilchrist is in atlanta for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. president biden is set to receive major endorsements in atlanta today. meanwhile, former president trump will be just 70 miles away, rallying his base, trying to win over voters in a state he narrowly lost four years ago. this morning, the general

election effectively under way. president biden launching his post state of the union tour in the philadelphia suburbs on friday with the first lady, telling a crowd democracy is at stake. >> above all, i see a country for all americans, a future for all americans, a presidency for all americans, because i believe in america, i believe in you. >> reporter: the campaign kicked off after the president's fiery address to the nation. his report on the state of the union. >> the state of our union is strong and getting stronger. >> reporter: partly an energized feisty pitch for re-election. >> i will not bow down. >> reporter: voters in georgia reacting to the president's speech, saying he showed he's ready for the general election ahead. >> super energetic, stayed organized, delivering punch after punch. s >> he might be a little elderly, but he's sane and he's a kind man. the other one, he's old, too. but he's crazy and dangerous.

with former president trump? >> it depends on his behavior. >> reporter: tonight president biden will receive the endorsements of three commit cool action committees that represent asian, black and latino groups. with the endorsement comes $30 million in support and more visibility in the key groups that the president will need to win re-election. >> all right, aaron gilchrist, we will see you back in a little bit. vice president kamala harris is going to be president biden's top surrogate. i spoke with the vice president on friday and began by asking her if the president put to rest questions about his mental fitness for a second term with his animated performance at the state of the union. >> he was absolutely on fire, and he answered any question that anyone might have about how passionate he is, how prepared he is, how principled he is to take on a second term as president. andi thought that he did a

spectacular job. >> republicans have repeatedly mocked the president's age and they've cast you in an unflattering light as the person who would take power if anything were to happen to him. so how do you respond to that and how do you convince american voters that you would be ready? >> well, first of all, i think that if there's any question about the president, joe biden's ability to do the job and do it well and do it with vigor and passion, last night dispelled any notion of that. he is committed, he is passionate. as it relates to me, i'm ready, if necessary, but it's not going to be necessary. joe biden and i are running together, he is president, i'm running as vice president and in 2020 millions and millions of people voted for this ticket and i believe they will do so again. >> you said there's no daylight between you and president biden regarding the war in gaza. but a number of voters, progressives and young voters say they're displeased with just

calling for a temporary six-week cease-fire. what do you say to those democrats who are demanding a permanent cease-fire? >> we all want this conflict to end as soon as possible, and how it does so matters. far too many palestinians have been killed. we have been clear, humanitarian aid needs to get in, and we need a cease-fire for six weeks so that we can get the hostages out, get aid in. and i've been veryclear, as has the president, that ultimately not only do we all want this conflict to end, but we have got to be committed to a two-state solution. >> will president biden commit to debating donald trump? >> i haven't talked to the president about that, but i'll tell you something, if you want to just look at the split screen to understand what's at stake, on the one hand you've got joe biden, someone who is competent, principled. on the other side of the split screen, you've got the former president who glorifies di dictators and has said he'll be

a dictator on day one. that's a choice that will be decided upon soon. we'll keep you posted. >> part of my conversation with the vice president, kamala harris, after refusing to debate any republican rivals in the primary, former president trump this week challenged president biden to a debate, any time, anywhere, any place. meantime, the senate narrowly avoided a partial government shutdown friday, passing a $460 billion package of spending bills, just hours before a midnight deadline. the house had already approved the bills on wednesday. president biden is signing them into law today. lawmakers are still negotiating another big spending package, which includes defense spending. they they face a march 22nd deadline. this weekend, more humanitarian aid is expected to be dropped into gaza, but much more is needed. while there had been hope that another temporary cease-fire could be reached to get aid in and hostages out, it does not look like that's going to be happening any time soon. nbc's molly hunter has the very latest from london.

molly, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. no signs of a cease-fire this morning, and president joe biden has said it is, quote, looking tough that an agreement is met by this weekend. this comes as the u.s. says they will build a floating pier to deliver aid into northern gaza. it could take as long as two months, according to the pentagon. this is not happening immediately, and it also won't address the near famine conditions right now in northern gaza. aid drops from planes continued yesterday, palestinian health officials said five civilians were killed on the ground by falling pallets. and you can see in this video how they are supposed to come down, slowly with those parachutes, and then we have a second video, how quickly these are dropping, making it far more dangerous on the ground. the u.s. has said it was not american aid that caused those casualties. take a listen. >> the press reports that u.s. air drops resulted in civilian casualties on the ground are false, as we've confirmed that

all of our air bundles landed safely on the ground. >> reporter: this morning our team on the ground reports a major israeli air strike has hit rafah, and this comes just a day before the muslim holy month of ramadan is expected to start. >> molly hunter with the latest this morning, thank you. here at home now, the fda has approved an important new use of the popular weight loss drug wegovy. doctors can now prescribe it to patients that might be overweight and at risk for heart attacks and strokes. clinical trials found the drug reduced risk of serious cardiovascular problems by 20%. the label change here could mean more employers and insurers will pay for the drug, bringing the prices down. it typically costs around $1,300. heart disease is the leading cause of death in the u.s. the pentagon is out with a report about ufos just months after a public hearing had a lot of americans looking in their back yards for the possibility of aliens. are they real? here is nbc's gadi schwartz.

alerts, mainly focused across places like the southeast, the northeast, atlanta included after all the heavy rain we received in the past couple of days. you can see it's on the move, the system bringing the heavy rain, strong storms. we'll have a potential for snow, even on the back side of it. right now our main focus is going to be strong storms. we have a tornado watch that has been extended to 2:00 p.m., so it goes for early afternoon for parts of georgia into florida. we'll watch that into early afternoon. you can see the bull's-eye, wilmington to tallahassee, we've got savannah, charleston included, augusta, charlotte, raleigh have a potential to see stronger storms, tornadoes, as well as strong winds, and we can't rule out hail as well. this is the system that's causing this mess for your saturday plans. it's eventually going to lift some of that moisture into parts of the mid-atlantic and the northeast. notice, the southeast looks a little better as the day goes on, later into the day, maybe the evening hours will be dryer. places like new york, boston, you're going to be soggy as we get into those later parts of

the day. tomorrow the system exits, but we're left with cold, blustery winds, and that's going to leave us with a potential for some lake effect snow we'll have to deal with sunday downwind of the lakes. the rainfall totals, 1 inch to 2 inches, we could see isolated spots higher than that. overall i think the flooding concern is going to be mainly confined through today and we'll see improvements. the one thing to note, heavy and wet snow is what we'll have to contend with, places like eery, buffalo, burlington and parts of interior new england we'll see th good saturday morning. time is 5:46. we are starting our day in novato at 46. 50 in san jose 42 in scotts valley. stick with clouds seeing this morning in san jose throughout the rest of the day and there are some rain chances that will be headed our way this weekend, and we'll stick with them mostly in the north bay this afternoon.

>> good morning. this is a heartbreaker. the buzzer beater for the win or so the team thought. the reverse came from the refs and with the state championship coming up today, time is running out on whether anything can be done about it. >> reporter: it was a rebound just in the nick of time. the putback that sealed the high school basketball team's trip to the new jersey state championship game or so they thought. then the referees convened and waving the basket offhandinging the victory to the camden high school panthers. this video clearly showing the ball leading the warriors' player's hands before the clock hits zero. the reversal standing and sending camden to the finals scheduled for today. the board of education taking the issue to a different court.

asking the ocean county superior court judge to postpone the championship game until it can be resolved. >> some unknown reason after everyone was leaving the court and one of the referees changed the minds of the referee that made the initial decision. we need to make that wrong right. >> reporter: even after the ref wrote to the athletic association to admit his call was wrong, the association still refused to roll it back. the association saying the rules are clear. once game officials leave the confines of the court, the game is concluded and the score is official. the judge offering little additional help ruling that the dispute is outside the court's jurisdiction. >> this case never should have been brought to the division in superior court. >> this is high school basketball. there's a rules and regulations that you have to learn to live with the decision. that is all sports.

>> reporter: in the last attempt ditch for relief, asking the state commissioner to step in. that request was denied as well. now appealing the judge's decision. the clock is rapidly ticking as the championship game they say they deserve to play in is still scheduled for later today. >> the team's last chance to appeal is to get the judge to reverse the decision. the game is set for noon today. the outlook is not good for that. the team posted on instagram asking to support the girls' team which is set to play this afternoon. guys, a lot of nieces and nephews and i have seen a lot of bad calls, none made me want to go to court. this would do it. >> this is right to go straight to the u.s. supreme court. >> you will cover this one in no time. >> we have an expert. >> i was a basketball ref for a long time. the ref's call sticks.
