mainly portions south of the golden gate bridge. but folks living north of the golden gate bridge will see more activity starting tonight into early tomorrow morning. i'm going to zoom in. we're seeing light rain through parts of san jose, along the 5, through parts of the santa cruz mountains as well. a little scattered activity through san francisco. as far as accumulations, no major impacts expected. we're talking trace amounts, less than a tenth of an inch for almost everybody. we're going to see the majority of the rain not be that problematic. even with the next system arriving tomorrow. temperature-wise in san jose, 53 degrees, notice the timestamps, 12:00, 1:00, we start to climb to about 60 degrees. when the sun comes out, we'll get a break from the rain. mike, how are those roads? >> one part of san jose is still jammed up solid. we saw one car using the shoulder. don't do that unless chp has allowed that for traffic flow.

they may need that for emergency vehicles, north 101 at mckee. no change in the update as far as what is going on, but the crash was reported in the second lane and everything did completely stop for a few seconds. i think they may be trying to move vehicles or doing a break so they can get some progress on the crash. no major injuries reported. we're seeing some folks take 280, that's pushing as the volume build through san jose. that is shifting part of your commute. anywhere north of san jose, you're doing all right, and everything else is pretty standard. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news this morning out of san francisco, this is where the chp is investigating a deadly hit-and-run. it happened about 1:30 this morning when a car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near the 5th street off-ramp. for some time all of the traffic was diverted. so far there's no vehicle description. if anyone may have witnessed what happened there, they are asked to contact chp. new this morning, an east bay school district is under fire after a teacher's alleged

sexual behavior with a student. now parents want to know how the teacher was hired in the first place. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom. you got the superintendent's response? >> reporter: the superintendent wants to know how this teacher was hired and whether there was anything the district missed. this is a teacher who is a fifth grade teacher and has been working at the same school for five years, hired after he was tried and acquitted of child molestation at a napa school. matthew shelton is charged with five felony counts of lewd acts with a child sometime in 2022 when he was a teacher in benicia. the district says he was not a teacher at the school or in the district this school year. he is due to appear in court later today on those charges. but in addition to those five felony counts that he faces today, shelton was arrested and tried in 2008 for allegedly touching two students inappropriately, 8 and

9-year-old girls. he was acquitted by a jury in 2008, and in just the last few hours, the benicia unified school district superintendent released a video statement. here is part of it. >> we believe having an independent review of our systems will reinforce the comprehensiveness of our practices, and it may offer additional recommendations for consideration. we will not shy away from embracing actions that will strengthen our commitment to excellence across our operations and service to students. >> reporter: you heard the superintendent talk about an independent review. he says that the review is going to go over the hiring and supervision of teachers and staff. the district's process of how and how fast it handles complaints of impropriety and they will work with teachers and students to make sure they feel empowered to advocate for

themselves. he seconds the review to be finished by the end of next week. the accused teacher, matthew shelter, will be in court later today and so will we. >> one to follow. thank you very much. it is 6:05. new at 6:00, a historic day in brussels as nato welcomes the addition of sweden with a flag-raising event. sweden officially joined the alliance last thursday when it became nato's 32nd member after pledging international knew ralt for more than 200 years. this is the second scandinavian nation following finland to join nato since russia's invasion of ukraine. happening today, jewish students at uc berkeley are organizing a march to protest what they say is the school's failure to respond to anti-semitic violence on campus. it follows recent incidents, including this one two weeks ago. that's when a heated protest by palestinian supporters shut down a campus event featuring a

jewish speaker at the playhouse. about 200 protesters surrounded the building and broke inside. the school later released a statement condemning the incident. turning now to decision 2024, and the race for the white house is ramping up. president joe biden's re-election campaign bringing in millions following last week's state of the union address. just within the last 90 minutes, presumptive gop nominee former president trump called into cnbc for an extensive interview. among the questions, he was asked whether tiktok is a national security threat. of course this comes as a new bill looking to ban the social media app gains ground in congress. >> very much go into privacy. you have that problem with facebook and lots of other companies. they get the information, they get plenty of information and they deal with china and they'll

do whatever china wants. >> trump went on to call facebook, quote, the enemy of the people. his statement comes as he and president biden held duelling events in georgia over the weekend ahead of the presidential primaries tomorrow. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is joining us live from washington this morning. a win in georgia will put trump one step closer to officially clinching his party's nomination, right? >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus. so georgia is one of several states holding primary elections tomorrow. as you may recall, back in 2020 it was a pivotal battleground state. president biden won there by just over 12,000 votes. the rematch of the 2020 election ramping up in 2024. both president biden and former president trump making their case to voters. >> we all know donald trump sees a different america, an american story of resentment, revenge and retribution. that's not me, that's not you.

flooded, displacing about 3,500 people. it later came to light that federal officials knew for decades that the levee was at risk of failing. shortly after the flooding, emergency repairs were made on the levee. the project aimed at a more permanent solution is expected to start later this year. let's take a live look in san jose this morning. things look not too bad. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect. rain to start out our morning, but that's not going to stick around all day. >> it should clear out just in time to enjoy your lunch or evening before we see overnight into tomorrow some more activity. you can see a little bit of the wet pavement in downtown san jose. this is the light kind of push that's moving through in through parts of san jose and san francisco right now, so for the most part, for the next couple of hours, this is going to clear out nicely. we're going to be left with cloud cover. this is at around 6:30 p.m. this evening. you'll notice a lot of the rain staying to the north. this is as the second system makes its approach.

inflation. the princess of wales, catherine, apologizing this morning for posting what experts say is a digitally altered photograph. it has a red slash because we want to mark it as fake and not allow it to be reused. the princess has been recovering from some kind of abdominal surgery and sent this picture out on british mother's day. the social post says it's taken by william, the prince of wales. catherine taking full responsibility writing, quote, like many amateur photographers, i do occasionally experiment with editing. i wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. i hope everyone celebrating had a very happy mother's day. you probably want another look at it. reuters editors say her cardigan doesn't line up proper, which is a sign of photo shop. the picture is still up on the

project. it is called "busk it!" and it will connect local musicians and businesses along market street. during the launch, more than 25 musicians played on the sidewalk. the initiative will go on until november. local musicians will perform weekly. happening today, a new era in bay area racing getting the green light with a new test drive for charity. >> if you tuned into "today in the bay" on friday, you saw us tracking it all with lots of twists and turns. >> i'll tell you what, it's a great ride. i've been on this track a number of times over the years with the old pavement. whoa, this is the most fun i've had out here. >> you recognize our own bob redell there. he was taking a test drive on the new track at sonoma raceway. it just underwent its first complete repaving in 23 years. at 9:00 this morning, the drive for charity gets under way. people can sign up to take three laps around the track in their own cars. all proceeds are benefiting the speedway childrens' charity

sonoma, which helps children and families in need. >> is he driving? >> no, no. >> i was, like, wait a minute. >> we saw him in studio today, so we know he's okay. >> it should be a nice day, too. you know, just aside from some cloud cover, the rain is not going to make a big impact. and then we are going to settle into such a nice stretch of weather. i'm talking upper 70s on the maps. stick around, because i'm going to let you know when that will come into play. right now we do have scattered activity over satellite radar, you can see in the south bay, and then through the interior, the tri-valley. hour-by-hour outlook, let's move into that. so 7:00, mostly cloud cover. the second system starts to move north to south overnight late, late tonight into early tomorrow morning. so if you notice in the timestamp, right up here, it's about 2:30, then it becomes more south spread into about 5:00,

6:00, 7:00. by 8:00, notice san francisco, livermore, through parts of san jose as well. and of course the sierra, there is a special weather statement in effect for the sierra because the winds will pick up as the system moves through, and just as quickly as that system moves in, it clears out. by wednesday, we'll see some cloud cover lingering, but the conditions will be dry, and that's going to set us up for a nice stretch. i want to show you how much rain we're going to get. the first system late last night into today, very light and scattered. less than a tenth of an inch, parts of ukiah, a little over a quarter of an inch. by the time we see the second system, we do see more filling out through parts of the south bay, including livermore, san jose, stretching through morgan hill and gilroy. and then parts of the santa cruz coastal mountain areas will see from a quarter to under half an inch. even the second system, not a big rainmaker. as far as the sierra, we'll see higher accumulations, king dale, 7 inches of snow, kirk wood, 4

inches. and the gusty winds will pick upwards of 60 plus miles per hour. you want to check travel conditions, even though there's no winter warnings in effect. today we see temperatures climb into the low 60s as we inch closer toward your wednesday forecast. we'll start to notice temperatures climbing, and then i know you wanted to see the 70s because i talked about it. san francisco even expecting some 70s by the time we get to thursday and friday. those temperatures will really bump up for inland areas. look at this, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, we're talking upper 70s. 76 degrees, could get warmer in some of the inland valleys. so quite a stunning weekend. we can start celebrating as early as the system moves out tomorrow. i think we can celebrate as long as you say it's okay. over here, no celebration, but there might be better news. north 101, i see this starting to steadily move and there's been -- i think chp has cleared the scene.

history month, and new information about how hard some women are working to try to keep their families afloat. a san francisco-based company called deputy provides software to help companies manage hourly workers. according to data, women make up to half the workforce. they also make up to 60% of americans that are holding multiple jobs. the ceo of deputy says those women workers are looking for flexibility. >> and the reason for that is because women tend to be the primary caregivers, whether for elderly parents, for children, and one thing that we have seen, also, in our data is an increase in microshifts, meaning women are working for a few hours in the morning, then taking care of their children or elderly parents, and then working more shifts in the afternoon. >> deputy's research also finds 38% of women workers don't feel they will be taken seriously if

in fremont we do have some activity on the radar. we'll talk more about our next storm system and what to expect coming up. 6:32 right now. happening today, jewish students at uc berkeley will protest what they call a lack of action by the school to protect students. it follows a chaotic incident on the campus two weeks ago. >> one professor now staging his own sit-in protest. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live for us in berkeley this morning. so, ginger, talk to us about this. what is expected to happen today? >> reporter: well, later today, marcus and laura, jewish students will march in a protest they're calling liberate the gate and they're marching in protest to say that the university is lacking in its action to protect the physical safety of jewish students, as well as their right to free speech. now, this follows a protest that's happening actually --

that continues to happen from one of the university's professors. it's happening at the social sciences building here on campus. it is happening at the office of ron hassner, the chair of israel studies here at berkeley. he started his protest saying he will teach, eat and sleep in his office, that will be open at all hours of the day and night to students who do not feel safe or have been subjected to anti-semitic abuse, or students who wish to chat. he wrote, quote, i am pessimistic that this will sway the administration certainly in the short term. i am willing to wait it out as long as i can. but the main reason i'm doing this is not to exert indirect pressure on campus leaders, but to signal to you students that we, the faculty, care. professor hassner's sit-in comes after pro-palestinian students

disrupted a event that was abruptly canceled because of security concerns. since that time, the federal government has launched a discrimination investigation for its handling of anti-semitism. this, despite the school's strong condemnation of the incident, saying in part, quote, we share your anger and concern, and we understand that we must do all that we can to prevent anything like this from happening again. now, today's march will start at noon with a rally to follow at 12:15. that will take place at california hall. the march will start from the playhouse to california hall. and that is aimed, organizers say, to pressure the university and its leaders to suspend certain student groups that are being investigated for that february incident. in berkeley, ginger conejero saab, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much, ginger. well, a shooting on the bay bridge left one person injured over the weekend, and officers

are still looking for that shooter. so this happened around 8:20 saturday night, and the chp says that woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past yerba buena island, when another car pulled next to her, started shooting at her car. the woman was hit, but chp is saying that it was not life-threatening injuries. the chp closed four of the five eastbound lanes for about two hours to investigate. anyone with information is urged to call police. one east bay city is trying to add a little spice to its restaurant scene and move the bay area forward after the difficult years during the pandemic. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joining us with more on the start of this year's restaurant week out in oakland. so customers probably can expect some good food out there. >> reporter: that's the idea. good morning to you. special dishes and deals as well. so this thursday visit oakland kicks off restaurant week, an annual event that's becoming more important after the difficult years of the pandemic,

the president will release his budget today. the white house says it will include a plan to reduce the deficit because it allows some trump-er attacks breaks to sunset and adds others for big corporations and americans making more than $400,000 a year. if you don't make more than $400,000 a year, your taxes would not go up. then again, it has little chance of passing the house as written, anyway. alabama congresswoman katie britt clarifying the story she told during her response to the state of the union thursday night. she told a story about a woman who had been trafficked. here is britt making that statement from her kitchen. in that story, she told the american people, while talking about what she says is president biden's failed immigration policy, the story, but did not mention the incident happened long before joe biden was president. george bush was. in fact, the incident she appears to be talking about didn't happen in the united states. britt says she was clear in her

i should say winter warnings in effect, but there is a special weather statement in effect. it will be a wintery mix paired with gusty winds which could make an impact on travel conditions. 7:30, notice mostly cloud cover, and then here comes the next system late overnight at around 2:30, starting in the north bay, becoming more widespread through parts of the south bay by the time we hit that 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 hour. by 8:30, livermore, san jose, palo alto, light to moderate rain at times, and then the sierra starts seeing a pickup in the snow accumulations. that quickly clears out, and wednesday we're going to see some cloud cover, but dry conditions will remain. how much rain are we getting? the first system we saw move in late last night, less than tenth of an inch for almost everybody. let's layer on the layers of tuesday's storm. notice the coastal mountains here, we get more of that green color. that's a little over a quarter of an inch. so even then, not a huge rainmaker.

snow totals, we could see anywhere from 4 to 5, 7 inches for the higher peaks. let's get a check of that sierra snowpack and see where our numbers stand. the north is at about 115%, central at 100%, the south stretch at about 92%. and that puts us at a statewide average of 104%. so we're doing fantastic. we're at about 93%, 94% for the april 1st average. april is when it really starts to count, once the temperatures warm up. the snow melts and goes into our waterways and reservoirs. your seven-day forecast starting on wednesday and thursday, high pressure rolls in. if you're in the inland areas, this is why an outside movie theatre would be fantastic. 75 degrees on friday, 76 saturday. >> i cannot believe it. i have to, your computer says so. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. the backup is moving, the backup

welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay." >> first we are following some breaking news, the chp investigating a deadly hit-and-run. this happened about 1:30 this morning. that's when a car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near 5th street off-ramp. now, for some time all of the traffic was diverted. so far, there's no vehicle description. anyone who witnessed what

happened, you are asked to contact police. a shooting on the bay bridge left one person injured over the weekend. officers are still looking for the shooter. it happened about 8:20 saturday night. the chp says the woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past yerba buena island. another car pulled next to her and started shooting. the woman was hit, but chp says it was not life-threatening. the chp closed four of the five eastbound lanes for about two hours to investigate. anyone with information should call the chp. a former benicia schoolteacher is due in court, accused of lewd acts with a child. matthew shelton is charged with five felony counts. prosecutors charged him shortly after he left his teaching job at robert se me middle school. it's prompting a new review of hiring policies at benicia

schools, along with an internal investigation launched by the superintendent. jewish students at uc berkeley are organizing a march over what they say is the school's failure to respond to yeent semitic violence on campus. two weeks ago a heated protest by palestinian supporters shut down a campus event featuring a jewish speaker. about 200 protesters surrounded the building and broke inside. the school later released a statement condemning what happened. since that time, the federal government has launched a discrimination investigation for its handling of anti-semitism. last look at that forecast today. >> we're going to get some scattered activity, i think for the next hour or so. after that, it's going to be mainly cloud cover. later tonight into early tomorrow, we get the arrival of a second system, but a weak low pressure system. the next one is expected to expand more into the south bay for tomorrow morning's commute. in the south bay commute
