under high wind alerts, there are major concerns over power outages, and as mentioned, flight delays at the beginning of a busy travel week. lots of folks headed off to spring break. we have got it all covered this morning, we've got dylan's full forecast in just a moment. but let's get started with nbc's erin mclaughlin live from new york's laguardia airport, erin, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. after the wintery mess that was this weekend, folks here in the northeast are waking up to windchills as low as the 20s and wind gusts up to 55 miles an hour. it is making for some dicey air travel conditions and it is expected to last all day. a powerful storm system moving pummelled parts of the country with rain, snow, and even tornadoes moving offshore, but leaving behind intense winds for millions. from north carolina to maine, with potential gusts closer to the coast, up to 60 miles per hour. # the coastal communities from charleston, south carolina to cumberland, maine. the combination of high tide and

heavy bands of rain left residents wading through water, damaging homes, businesses and vehicles. from above, you can see debris left behind in hampton beach, new hampshire, and leading to messy commutes from new york city to philadelphia. the weather service confirming two tornadoes touched down in alabama and georgia, ripping the roofs off some homes. all of it as spring breaker travel heats up with the weather to the north contribut to the north contributing to hundreds of flight cancellations and thousands of delays nationwide now, as for today, so far there have been more than 300 flight delays and more than 40 flight those wind gusts pick up later today. savannah? >> erin mclaughlin leading us off, thank you. >> dylan is in for al with what we can expect today, a lot of delayed flights.

>> the winds are already strong, late morning, early afternoon they'll get even stronger. we have wind but watch this space up and down the northeast, stretching back down into western virginia and west virginia even into north carolina where we have strong winds too so far they're gusting up to about 40 to 45 miles an hour in and around the new york city area they could gust as high as 50 to 55 miles an hour naturally, that does increase the risk of power outages when you think of how wet the ground is that could topple some power lines, also creating delays at the airports too it is part of this area of low pressure that's pulling away on the backside of it some cold air is surging in so we do have some snow, especially up across northern new england in the mountains where we picked up 12 inches of snow over the weekend. we could see an additional couple inches of snow, but the wind will be the major issue as we go through the day today. >> dylan, thank you very much. we turn now to the presidential race. the weekend providing a glimpse at what may well be the longest

where the panel blew off midflight. now the justice department has opened a criminal investigation. nbc's stephanie gosk is following that story for us. good morning. a criminal case, pretty big deal >> yeah, it is a big deal. over the weekend, alaska airlines confirmed that it's cooperating with this criminal probe, but adds that the airline does not believe it is a target in the probe the investigation is looking into that january 5th incident, as you mentioned, when that door panel flew off an alaska airlines flight boeing 737 max 9 at 14,000 feet the airline, as i mentioned, does not believe it is part of this investigation but that it is normal that an investigation like this would actually be triggered by an incident "the wall street journal" is reporting that passengers and crew have been questioned and f passengers have hired attorneys, no one was injured in the incident, a lawyer for multiple passengers says they hope through this investigation and all of the other investigations that they get accountability, the doj, as well as boeing, have

car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near the 5th street off-ramp. so far, there's no vehicle description. if anyone witnessed what happened, they should contact the chp. a shooting on the bay bridge left one person injured over the weekend. officers are still looking for the shooter. it happened around 8:20 saturday night. the chp saying a woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past yerba buena island. then another car pulled up next to her, started shooting. that woman was hit, but chp is saying that it was non life-threatening injuries. the chp closed four of five eastbound lanes for about two hours to investigate. anyone with information is urged to call police. let's get a look at that forecast for this monday morning. vianey is in for kari. >> a bit of a rainy start in the south bay. a live look in downtown san jose. we are seeing light to moderate rain moving through, but it's not going to linger all day long. by about 11:00, 12:00, we'll get

peeks of sunshine. the cloud cover will linger and temperatures will be in the upper 50s, low 60s as well for a lot of spots in the bay area, including san jose, 54 degrees. this is going to set us up for more rain heading into tonight, but by tomorrow once the system clears out, daytime highs will be in the 60s. take a look at your seven-day forecast, tuesday, 61 degrees, then temperatures really start to warm up leading us into some high pressure. we'll go into a dry and warmer stretch across the bay area.

savannah and i paid him a visit the tonight show, now he's giving it back, live in our studio, he'll be here live powerful winds causing dangerous conditions and travel problems all morning along the east coast flight delays and cancellations are piling up right now. the same storm system fuelling today's extreme weather caused flooding over the weekend from the deep south to new england. and the national weather service says tornadoes damaged home and downed trees in georgia and alabama. dylan is in for al with how things are shaping up. >> the winds will continue to get strong, especially later this morning into early this afternoon. so we have wind alerts all across the northeast into new england, stretching down into north carolina and virginia as well. 62 million people under these wind advisories. and even some high wind warnings in the higher elevations now, this area of low pressure that brought the rain over the weekend, this is just a powerful storm. so on the back side of it is why we still have all those strong winds. and currently winds are gusting up to 30 to 40 miles an hour

now to that escalating battle over tiktok, congress is set to take a vote earlier this week that coul lead to a nationwide ban it has a lot of users worried about the future of the wildly popular platform nbc's business correspondent brian cheung is here with the story. he's following this back and forth. for folks who haven't been following the story closely, bring us up to speed how do we get to this point? >> this nationwide ban could happen relatively quickly because the house says it will put it to a full vote later on this week. after that point in time it still needs to get passed by the senate and signed by the president before coming into law. but we have to remember what this is all about. this is what lawmakers say it concerns a national security issue. they're worried that the chinese parent company bytedance has access and is giving data from tiktok to the chinese government those are allegations that tiktok denies. they say if they follow through on this nationwide ban, it will destroy the livelihoods of all the creators that have build reputations off this app. so very interesting, we'll see how it develops. >> so the legislation basically says to tiktok, either divest

>> a therapist when i was about 42. >> reporter: you kept this inside? >> yes. and he said, whisper to me one thing you have never told anyone. and i said, i was sexually abused by a woman when i was a child. that was the make name i had in my family before i went to maywell. and that was the boy who had part of him snuffed out during those five years at the school. i wanted to reconnect with the carefree, happy little guy i was before i was sent to this place. >> the school is taking his charges seriously and told nbc news in a statement, they have reached out to the local authorities charged with

protecting children. we will follow their guidance on what we do from this point. we would encourage anyone with similar experiences to come forward and contact officials or the police. >> that is one of the most disturbing and sad stories. and the fact he had to wait until he was 42 to feel comfortable to say anything. so this happened to other kids. have any of the other kids come forward? >> well, this is not just his story. he interviews over two dozen of the young men who were in school with him. >> wow. >> he is the first to say some of them experienced much worse than he did. and he felt -- he told me that after he talked to them, he was compelled to write this book. so here it is. this is "the galley." it is out in the u.s. this week. >> so the school is just investigating? >> well, i mean, they have gone to authorities, which -- now, this is all contained in the period what he writes about. he was there from '72 to '77. so no allegations about what's going on there now. there are now girls there. they have increased the
