"nbc news daily" starts right now. today, thursday, march 14th, 2024, trump's new fight. the former president is sitting inside of a federal courtroom again while his lawyers fight for his case involving classified documents should be dropped. on the border, the investigation starts to roll out body cameras and why it is happening now. and quiet on the set, the years of sexual abuse against some of the biggest stars, and a child survivor coming forward. olivia munn and christie brinkley are opening up about their battle with cancer, and how they say it could save your life as it did theirs.
12:02 pm
and donald trump is heading back home after spending hours inside of a florida courtroom today, and his lawyers are arguing to a federal judge that two motions should be dropped, and two motions tied to the president's retention of classified documents. trump has claimed in the last 24 hours that he did nothing wrong. he has plead not guilty to all of the charges against him. today's case is the one of many that trump and the attorneys are currently dealing with, and a seismic one is coming in april when the supreme court is going to be hearing the claims of presidential immunity. leading us off this hour is dasha burns who was inside of the courtroom, and tell us about the arguments that trump's attorneys put forward and ultimately, what happened in court? >> so, things are moving a lot quicker today, ellison, than folks were think, and adjourning before 3:00 today. the two major motions to dismiss
12:03 pm
that were heard today were number one, the trump team argued that the main statue used against trump the here is unconstitution ally vague, and that is a constitutional rule that requires a law to state clearly, and explicitly what conduct is punishable, and what is prohibited, and they are saying that the rule that is used against trump is too big, and allows for biases and is too vague to be charged. and the second is against the presidential act, and the former president while he was in office designated the materials as found in mar-a-lago were personal record, and that he was able to do that and because of that, he cannot be charged and that it should all be dismissed. this is how the former president has been defending himself. take a listen. >> i took him very legally, and
12:04 pm
i was not hiding them. we had boxes on the front, and a lot of the boxes had clothing, and we were moving out, unfortunately, we were moving out of the white house. >> reporter: and one of the president's attorneys said, look, presidents since george washington have been taking home materials, and they have not been charged for it. cannon seemed skeptical of that line for dismissal, and she said, it seems unclear how you are going right for indictment, and that is better held for trial, ellison. >> so when do we think, dasha and when do we know that the judge cannon could issue a ruling on the motions? >> it is up to her. she could do it tomorrow or in a week or three weeks or in months. we don't know. and she has been taking her time with the decision, and so i don't exexpect a quick turn around here. and usually campaign trail wise, that is where you spend time,
12:05 pm
and is that something that politically, you are thinking that would help them as they go out on the trail? >> yeah, look, you have seen him show up at court when he is not required to be there, and today included, because the trump campaign does see it as a campaign stop of sorts and as a way to rally supporters around him, and we have had supporters waving the flags and playing music and a tailgate of sorts outside of the courthouse showing support for the former president to keep riding that wave. >> thank you, dasha burns. and the biden administration is continuing to enforce officers to be wearing body cameras. and now border and custom agents will start wearing them in buffalo, detroit, philadelphia,
12:06 pm
and baltimore and washington, d.c. julia ainsley has more on the program, and big picture, what does this mean overall for the migrant crisis in the united states? >> well, i got to see the body ras, myself, and they will pop to the front of the officer's jacket while they are being deported or if someone is in violation of human smuggling or knowingly employing a migrant. and that is where they are going to be reporting them, and it could mean a lot more to the press of how the migrants are treated when they are arrested, and a lot of people saying that ice is going into the home where there could be small children. now we will be able to get that footage, and workplace raids,
12:07 pm
and what that footage looks like, and it could open up transparency into the process. >> and of course, it all comes down to money, and they don't have money yet to roll the cameras out beyond the five cities. and that is because the americans are tightening the purse strings around the dhs and they want them to work on crossing the southern border, and they don't want to get the tight services on the budget, and that could mean that the customs and border protection, and then they may not be able to do their job at the level now, and as the funding shortfalls plays out on the next year. so that is really going to be able to come down to whether or not they can expand the program at the border. >> julia ainsley, thank you. we appreciate it. there is a desperate rush to escape haiti, and the violence to overtake the country.
12:08 pm
with the gangs controlling most of the capital, the acting president said he would resign three days ago, but it appears to have broken down already. and abc news is longer to break down what you are seeing there, gabe gutierrez of the people trying to get out there. >> and as you can see here, in the dominican republic and across the border from haiti there, and what you are seeing there, it is an open air market, and many of the folks here are haitians, and the authorities have closed off the border between the dominican republic and haiti today, and the haitians are allowed to go to the no-man's-land here, and right before the dominican republic to come here, and to kind of take supplies back over the border. now, the violence is
12:09 pm
concentrated in the port-au-prince area which is the capital, and this area here which is the northeastern part of hayty, and more rural, and not as much violence, but the issue here is extreme poverty and hunger, and that is what we are seeing on the ground, and many of the people that we have spoken with are frustrated and right now, we are going to have a political vacuum in haiti, and they don't know what is coming next, ellison. >> gabe, you have extensively reported in haiti, and what we know is a culmination of many issue, and can you walk us through some of the context as it relates to the current situation in haiti, how we got here, and the talks that are supposed to help, and they have stalled? >> well, there is so much corruption, and they can't find
12:10 pm
political stability in the political vacuum, as we are showing more here. there are a lot of questions as to whether the transitional government after the prime minister has stepped down a few days ago will be allowed to happen. the u.s. is funding a multi national police force, and security force and the white house has insisted that there are going to be no american boots on the ground, but they are working with other caribbean nations to provide some stability here. the very, as you can see, it is very difficult and chaotic situation here, and so many questions about the political process in haiti, and also in the dominican republic >> and gabe, we saw behind you, a big trolley that look like a lot of water on it, and so is
12:11 pm
aid coming through there, and do they feel that the international community is doing enough? >> well, it is few and far between, and now, these are the ha and that the u.n. is going to create a corridor to get aid in across a sky corridor, and it is so essential not only here, but also in port-au-prince, and controlled by the armed gangs, and now, hundreds of americans are registered with the state department that they are trapped right now. sglb as always, it is important. thank you. with us is cnb c's potential buyer of 3,sglrngs so, steve,
