united and declare an emergency in the air because the problem wasn't discovered until after the plane landed safely in oregon. in a statement, the airline says it will investigate what happened and make repairs before the plane gets cleared to fly again. there's a lot of buzz and questions after two unexpected decisions by a south bay school board. san jose's alan rock school board rejected a proposal to relocate hundreds of students. in the board terminated the contract of the superintendent was recommending that relocation. as nbc bay area's damon trujillo explained with firing cut even the board president by surprise. >> reporter: the news sent shockwaves throughout to the alum rock school districk. parents and teachers in disbelief. the question they have is now what? she led to the alum rock school districk through tumultuous times. >> she did a good job. >> reporter: to the surprise of many, the board voted 3-2 to terminate the contract of

superintendent dr. hilaria bauer. for me personally, it makes more tough. >> you were surprised by the motion? >> the decision was made the same night the board voted against dr. hilaria bauer's recognition to close a middle school at aptitud community academy at goss. no reason was given for the termination only that dr. hilaria bauer will be given 10 days of leave. the decision has caused some parents concern. >> it is sad to see someone who did their part of the district and the students for everybody, for her to be gone, it's kind of sad. now who will we get? >> reporter: you want her back? this. says she wants dr. hilaria bauer back. a statement, the alum rock educators association said this is quite a surprise . the alum

rock educators association is taken aback by the timing of the board decision. the teachers union also says there were signs the district needed a fresh start. tonight, the board president is trying to put concerned parents and students at ease. >> they can be assured our district continues to run as is. we have amazing staff and teachers and administrators at the schools will continue to work as they have been. >> reporter: a nationwide search will soon get underway for dr. hilaria bauer's replacement. that person will face immediate challenges, including a dramatic decline in student enrollment and a $20 million budget deficit next school year. red ink that could mean the future closure of as many as half a dozen schools. in san jose, damien trujillo, nbc bay area news. now to our microclimate weather. we can do it the strong winds

through the past day or so in the bay area. does appear to be slowing down. this is a live look at san francisco and san jose right there. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is here with us. are we still on track? you and i was hoping for a beautiful weekend. >> the weekend is shaping up for us as we head into saturday and sunday. with all of the wind gusting up, especially in the hills the past day and a half, which has been pretty strong. the wind overall is beginning to decrease. i wanted to get you this latest view of the forecast and also the current winds. still strong gusts up into the central family. mount diablo is dropping to 18 miles per hour, 14 in san jose, 12 in san francisco and 20 in santa rosa. we moved to tonight, by 9:00 p.m., everybody should be below 20 miles per hour. check this out, through tomorrow morning's forecast, continues to decrease, starting off with calm winds right off toward napa. high pressure ensures that saturday and sunday, we get the sunshine, we keep the dry weather. it's going to be the storm track to the north. look at this preview for the inland values. we start off chili with 49 but

under sunny skies, we should be getting back into the low 70s i the afternoon and also a beautiful day at the coastline. not expecting any foggy. sunny skies, of course, cooler with an ocean breeze. we will also get up and upper 60s by the afternoon. more looks at st. patrick's day events. if you are headed out this weekend, two of the top events in the bay area and also the next chance for rain and when that lines up for you. i will set it up for you in 15 minutes. stay on top of your weather in your neighborhood i downloading our free nbc bay area app. use your phone's camera to scan the qr code on the left side of your screen. it will lead you right to the radar on our weather page. the case against the man accused of stabbing a tech executive is staying in san francisco. prosecutors say bob lee was killed back in april of 2023. lee founded the payment service cash up. the legal team was in court to try to move the trial out of the city. the judge ruled against that ocean. his lawyers say those aren't often granted so they want is appointed but he did claim the judges other ruling is a win.

>> i am very happy with the ruling he give us on the phones. we will get a full phone number of seven years of information on the phones. i think that's going to be very fruitful for our defense and i'm very happy about i think our whole team is happy about that ruling. >> nima momeni is said to be back in court for a hearing next month and a tentative start for his trial has been set for may 20th. stop the conflict. that is the message from a bay area doctor back home tonight after a medical mission in gaza. dr. mohammed subay is an emergency room doctor at el camino hospital. he landed at sfo this afternoon. you can see him after spending five weeks at a gaza field hospital. the doctor says he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the war on civilians. he provided vital medical care to meet the conditions, which included treating shrapnel and

gunshot wounds. >> i realized i was entering an apocalyptic war movie where you have constant drones and reconnaissance planes overhead buzzing 24 seven. you have the sounds of screaming babies screaming mothers over there dead babies bodies. >> members of the council on american islamic relations greeted dr. subay at the airport today. the group has been working with lawmakers on a cease-fire in gaza. the special prosecutor in the georgia election interference case against former president trump has resigned after a judge ruled that the case could only continue if that prosecutor or fulton county district attorney fani willis stepped aside. event attorneys had argued willis benefited financially from a relationship with nathan wade, who she hired as a special prosecutor, claims she forcibly denies. the legal fight has already delayed the case against the former president and his lawyers are promising to keep appealing.

nbc's alice bar is in washington with details. >> reporter: a major ruling today means the georgia election interference case against former president trump and his 14 codefendants can continue with fulton county district attorney fani willis still in charge but with one significant condition, the special prosecutor she hired to lead the case, nathan wade, has two and he has now resigned. judge scott mcafee ruled the "appearance of and propriety caused by the romantic relationship between willits and wade," means the. cannot remain on the case together. >> this is only a partial victory for the da and it does come at substantial professional and personal cost to her and mr. wade. >> reporter: willis gave fiery testimony last month, refuting allegations that she benefited financially from the relationship through romantic getaways. she and wade also forcefully denied lying about the start of their relationship, insisting

it did not become romantic until after she hired him. >> you think i'm on trial? these people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020. i'm not on trial no matter how hard you try to put me on trial. >> reporter: former president trump's attorney saying in a statement "the court had not afforded appropriate significance to the prosecutorial misconduct of willis and wade, including the financial benefits. we will use all legal options available as we continue to fight to end this case." further challenges could push the trial over whether mr. trump and his allies tried to illegally overturn georgia's 2020 election results until after the 2024 election. this comes amid a new delay in the new york hush money case against former president trump and a ruling in his florida classified documents case that leaves open the possibility that case could be dismissed later on when it would be harder to appeal before the election. and it is all leading

up to the u.s. supreme court hearing arguments next month over mr. trump's presidential immunity claims that could lead to multiple prosecutions being thrown into question. in washington, alice bar, nbc news. former vice president mike pence says he will not support his former boss in his bid for the white house. mike pence dropped out of the race for the republican presidential nomination back in october. in an interview with fox news today, mike pence said he will not endorse former president trump in his reelection bid. he says trumps political plans do not align with the conservative agenda. mike pence added he would "never vote for a democratic president and plans to keep his foot private." a major changes, and a long-running community assistance program in the south bay. el camino health said thank you and goodbye to its beloved volunteer roadrunners today. that program shuttled seniors to and from the hospital or other places within 10 miles. as nbc bay area emma goss explains, starting monday, a

rideshare company will be taking over. >> reporter: the move was particularly challenge patients coming out of surgery with sedation. they will have to find someone else to take them home afterwards because a lyft driver can't. 80-year-old susan deal took her last volunteer driven right to her physical therapy appointment friday. she has relied on the roadrunners routinely for 11 years to get to and from all of her medical appointments. for a small fee. >> think roadrunners provided a vital social link because they know you, we know them. >> reporter: the roadrunners transportation service through el camino health has been around for nearly 4 decades. and, in the last seven years, began a partnership with lyft to fulfill some of the right outside of the volunteer hours . but, beginning monday, lyft will take over all roadrunner rights . longtime volunteers are heartbroken. >> a lot of friendships. they

were just passengers. a lady the other day i've had since i first started, she said i'm not going to see you again. can i hug you? i said oh sure. >> reporter: in a statement sent to nbc bay area, el camino health said it is committed to its roadrunners program and evolving its efficiency and effectiveness . historically, volunteers have been essential to this program and will continue to provide administrative support to the roadrunners program. they also say passengers won't need the lyft apple a smartphone and can just call the roadrunners office to schedule their lyft right. or for six dollars more, they can upgrade to lyft assist to be escorted by their driver to and from the vehicle. vicki perna, one of the roadrunner volunteers, believes even the assistant option doesn't go far enough to serve the clients she has driven for over a decade. >> i just feel like, like i said, a very small kind of

they are calling loneliness and epidemic. san mateo county's leaders announced and initiative to

tackle miss. it is a campaign to create policies that address loneliness among older adults. the surgeon general says loneliness is as bad as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. the county declared it a public emergency a couple months ago and leaders are seeking millions of dollars in funding to create awareness around this issue. >> what we are trying to do is really try to take people out of the shadows. loneliness, it is not a core issue, it's not a rich issue, it is a people issue. >> the county has partnered with organizations like peninsula family service and the app wiser, a free activity- based app that helps people over 40 connect and make friends. a new honor for the rosie's, those are the women who kept america's factories and shipyards running strong during world war ii and they are about to get one of the nation's highest honors. we are talking about the rosie the riveter women. jesse hernandez caught up with one of the bay areas rosies,

headed to washington, d.c. to collect the congressional gold medal. >> it was just a thing to do . it needed doing, they needed people to do the welding, to make the ships. >> reporter: 98-year-old jean gibson describes with 12 her to leave her home in minnesota at age 18 and take a welding job in seattle during world war ii. >> everybody was chipping and doing what they could. >> women do the same jobs as men. >> reporter: gibson is one of 20 million women are known as rosie the riveter, women who entered the workforce during world war ii, when the nations men went off to war. >> the two jobs that normally were not available to women. they worked long, hard, tiring days. somewhere welders, some worked building ships and planes. >> reporter: eight decades later, the country's rosies

will be getting the nation's highest honor. gibson will be among 30 other rosies who will travel to washington, d.c. next month to collect a congressional gold medal, and honor many say is long overdue. >> i think of the fact that we honor what they did, we appreciate what they did. >> reporter: gibson was recently recognized at the warriors game, a little warm up for what is to come. >> that was fabulous. and, i'm, you know, really honored. it was an early part of my life. and, life went on. >> reporter: gibson went on to get her phd, teach school, become a writer, and a licensed pilot. and, she credits much of it to her days as a rosie the riveter. >> it was an experience that kind of jelled everything. i've always been kind of independent but this made me

start off outside. if you are doing anything this evening, traveling around the bay, heading into san francisco, meet up with friends, family, what not, 72 degrees right now and sunny skies. we will get down to cooler, low 60s as we head to through 8:00 tonight and eventually 50s by 9:00 and 10:00. you will need a jacket around 9:00. for right now, no jacket needed. it's gorgeous throughout a lot of the bay area. 75 right near the bay. that's a live shot of oakland with mostly clear skies. we dip down to 64 at 8:00 p.m. to the inland valleys, we are in the 70s as well, averaging 73 and we dip down to 61 at 9:00. as we move through this weekend forecast, the system that produced that wind really strong gusts, 50+ miles per hour in the mountains and a lot of refills, that's moving way off to the east. there's no chance we will get into gusty winds. that is the good news. it's going to be this area of high pressure keeping dry weather with us and also the sunshine. once again, lining up perfectly for the weekend forecast. we start off on the chilly side

but mostly sunny skies. this will put us down to 47 through the peninsula. a nice beginning here. a little bit refreshing as you step out the door. if you are trying to get errands done before you sit back and relax on saturday. 50 in san francisco, 47th the east bay. temperatures as we head to through tomorrow, staying in the 70s for a lot of the bay area. look at us across the south bay. 72, los gatos. it continues all the way down to gilroy at 74. to the east bay, 70 in vallejo, 73, hayward. maybe you are headed toward dublin in the east bay, one of the largest bay area st. patrick's day celebrations. they've got stuff happening all weekend long and we will be under sunny skies. a lot of the irish, so to speak. some low 70s as we head to the afternoon. if you are headed out toward peninsula. we can get nice weather at half moon bay at the 67. down in palo alto, 73.

san francisco, a huge, iconic parade always happens here for st. patrick's day. tomorrow, we are also looking at all the free conditions in. we will even get up to 70 degrees through 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 and stuff happening right up until 6:00 p.m. the parade starts at second and market, right onto civic center plaza in the morning. let's take it on through wine country, temperatures in the low 70s from santa rosa through napa. you will want to enjoy the weekend forecast. by next weekend, we are down into the low 60s and that would bring back the chance of some rain by next friday, the 22nd and potentially next saturday and the following sunday. this is going to be nice as we get into the weekend forecast. look at these temperatures in the 70s all the way through next wednesday before we start to see it dip. i noticed when i was out today everybody had the extra kick in their step for it to line up on friday, saturday and sunday is

there is a new limit, and self checkout at target stores. starting this weekend, self checkout will be limited to customers with 10 items or fewer. target center self checkout lanes may close down completely when foot traffic is low. the shopping giant says self checkout is meant for customers making quick trips. walmart says it is adding self

checkout limits to some of its stores. this comes at retailers claim theft is becoming a major problem. could more financial relief be on the way for college students? the white house hope so. the biden administration is calling on congress to end junk fees. those junk fees on student loans are heating costs companies and schools include on student bills. these can be things like automatic charges for test books and left over money for meal plans along with these on the original loans from 1% to 4%. if these fees are eliminated, students would

the supreme court ruled that public officials can be sued for blocking their critics on social media. the unanimous decision came down this morning. the issue came up in a case involving former president donald trump while in office. then-president trump was sued for blocking critics from his personal twitter account. the justices eventually dismissed the case after trump left office. the court clarified the ruling applies to officials that have the authority to speak on
