as we welcome a new weekend. we survived the first week of daylight saving time. hope you're waking up with a smile on your face. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast and hopefully that wind we saw in the last couple of days is gone. >> yeah. no. good news, good-bye to the wind. hello to the weekend as we look outside and see the sunrise starting to peek through dublin this morning. notice winds definitely calmed down. not only there out towards walnut creek very gusty over the last two days and san francisco, clear skies. you can see the golden gate bridge and marin hedlund. good morning over in mount tam and down in san jose. lurching the lawn chairs setting up downtown giving way to a beautiful weekend that's going to continue to feel like spring. we are saying good-bye to the final days of winter here. our temperatures upper 60s and low 70s throughout the bay. keeping those wind speeds calm, see a lot more sunshine.

a lot of events to talk about and will guide you through in the full microclimate forecast in about 15 minutes. back to you. >> cinthia, see you soon. that wind we just talked about that knocked around the bay area in the last couple days sent this massive redwood tree toppling over in sonoma county. it happened in forestville. the front of that cabin pretty much gone, roof destroyed. thankfully no one was home at the time. yesterday afternoon a city inspector red tagged the home. meaning it is unsafe to occupy. and in marin county, that large tree fell blocking a road in san rafael. just so happens you saw there it fell next to a sign warning people about falling trees and limbs. crews say no one was hurt. no property was damaged. remember, you can stay up to date with the weather in your neighborhood by downloading our free nbc bay area app. just use your camera's phone.

scan the qr code on the left side of your screen. it will lead you right to the radar on our weather page. new this morning, a pedestrian killed late last night in the south bay just after 11:00 on southbound 280. chp responded to a crash on the third street on ramp in san jose. when they arrived there was a man lying on the right-hand shoulder. the driver did stay on the scene. the investigation continues. and an update this morning on the freeway closure we brought to you as breaking news last night about a mile stretch of interstate 780 in benicia, closed. police tell us they pulled over a car just before 9:30 last night when the people inside that car shot at the officers. they say that's when they were forced to return fire. two suspects are now in custody

after an overnight investigation, all on and off ramps reopened around 5:30 this morning. five people are in the hospital following a fiery crash in ra moat contra costa county. four teenagers. it happened around 5:30 last yeechk on vasco road and byron. a driver making a u-turn. another car slammed into it. both cars burst into flames. somehow everyone inside both cars escaped. we are waiting for an update on their conditions. united airlines under the microscope following a string of mechanical problems involving their boeing 737 planes and the most recent happened yesterday when a piece of a plane appears to have detached somewhere between taking off and sfo and landing in medford, oregon. this is the seventh issue with a united jet in just the past few

weeks. "today" in the bay reports. >> reporter: an older boeing 737-800. not one of the new 737 maxes seen investigated for multiple issues but yet another united flight with mechanical problems in a may be linked to maintenance issues. united airlines officials say the boeing 737-800 landed safely this afternoon in medford, oregon. pilots noticed it first during a postflight inspection as seen in this photo reportedly shows the aircraft missing a piece after it landed. airport officials say the flight tower immediately closed flight operations while maintenance crews swept the runways making sure they were clear. >> couldn't find debris, panels, anything. reopened and everybody landed and operations continued normally. >> reporter: there's been a string of mechanical problems with united planes for the past two weeks. thursday a flight from dallas

experienced a hydraulic leak just before landing at sfo. earlier this week on monday a flight headed to sfo from australia had to turn around mid-flight after fluid was seen spewing out of the right rear landing gear. this flight last week made headlines around the world when a japan-bound united airplane lost a wheel after takeoff at sfo. that wheel crashing on to cars in a parking lot below. then this happened. >> keeps coming back to san francisco. that's my concern. this is a major maintenance base and major hub for united and issues continue to be san francisco centric. >> reporter: another aviation expert tells nbc bay area the large metal pieces reproved during maintenance on the 737s engine and supposed to be tightly screwed back into place prior to a reen spekz making sure they're secured safely. all major concerns. >> look back when the engine was last serviced see who did it,

inspected the work after it was done. >> reporter: mccarron says united does much of its maintenance work at sfo employees 3,500 tech anythings but some turned to outside work. something else for investigators to look into. >> more and more routine either monthly or semi mild annual inspections are being outsourced to third parties and some of these are out of the country and probably have less oversight than here in the united states. >> reporter: for now united says this 737 in today's incident remains grounded while it makes repairs, and investigates what went wrong before returning it to service. from sfo, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. a freeway closure in alameda county this st. patrick's day weekend. caltrans is working to repair a stretch of southbound 680 in pleasanton from the 580, 680 connector to highway 84. caltrans crews will lay new pavement on that portion of the

failing roadway. the freeway will reopen monday morning just in time for the commute. the agency says the work would have taken 40 nighttime closures. instead they opted for a roughly 60-hour weekend closure. the search has been called off for a swimmer in the east bay. the alameda fire department launched a major search yesterday afternoon after they received calls about a swimmer struggling in the water. a firefighter trained in water rescue immediately got in to the water and tried to pull that man to safety. shortly after a water rescue team arrived, after more than two hours of searching rescuers found the man's body under water. bay area doctor is back home after he spent more than a month in gaza treating patients. a lot of what we are seeing on-screen, palestinian american doctor saw firsthand. "today" in bay's reporter spoke with him and his family about

the experience. >> reporter: dr. mohammad subeh back with his wife and kids in the bay area after spending five weeks in gaza treating patients. he was greeted by family and friends. >> hugged him. started crying. just all the emotion from the past five weeks. >> reporter: minutes after reuniting with them he spoke about some of what he experienced while in gaza. >> a large group of patients come in all at once, 60, 70 at the time after a missile strike and you really have to go through the process of color coding them. is this a person who's dead? someone who's expected to die. so you shouldn't really focus your energies and resources on them. just someone, critically ill you could potentially save. >> reporter: two weeks ago we met his wife and kids. while on the phone mohammad told her about two kids he got to

know. >> that specific video, with a walker and the other with crutches. missing his right leg. and they both had blast injuries to their bodies. it was one of the hardest things for me to say good-bye to them, because i literally spent every day with them. we would fly kites and reservoir sunsets. >> reporter: they're looking forward to spending time together. >> it's ramadan. so, like, i like having, you know, the early and late meals with him. we like to go get boba. >> reporter: all relieved to be reunited. >> to be able to hold my boys and hug my wife. >> reporter: something they don't take for granted but he is also thinking about the people in gaza. >> sad at the same time remembers as we speak right now in this time a child has been killed. i am -- not there to help resuscitate that child.

>> reporter: he seas permanent cease-fire is needed and he and his family are continuing to raise awareness about what he witnessed overseas. >> every child killed is an, that is a human being that was, that lost their life. unjustly. >> i just hope i can learn from what he experienced, and i can tell other people about it, and spread the message. >> reporter: jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. parents are reacting to two big decisions from a local school board this week. the board of trustees of the alum rock union school district voted to terminate their contract with the superintendent. superintendent dr. hilaria bauer led the east san jose school district for ten years. the board also rejected one of bauer's proposals to close a middle school and relocate hundreds of students. during the pandemic that school district faced some of the highest cove ed rates in all of

. welcome back. 7:14 on your saturday morning. transamerica pyramid and clear back to the golden gate bridge. a beautiful way to start our weekend. cinthia pimentel has a great forecast if i do say so myself coming up in a few minutes. but first -- count your items before self-checkout at target. the store's rules are changing this weekend. the retail giant says starting tomorrow customers will be limited to ten items or fewer at most of its nearly 2,000 stores nationwide. some self-checkout lanes may close entirely at certain hours depending on foot traffic. this as target and other retailers are battling theft. about 10,000 people are

expected to fill the streets form for the oakland marathon. yesterday runners picked up race bibs and pack itsd. this year it passes by iconic oakland landmarks and includes a trip across the bay bridge. it's a big weekend for the running world. some people traveled from other countries for the chance to compete. all proceeds in the marathon benefit eat, learn, play. the foundation founded by warriors star steph curry and his wife aishya. this year events also include the kids' fun run. that's today. you can still sign up at the oakland marathon website. and tomorrow is st. patrick's day, if you have your green ready. as always, our bay area community of dublin is going all-out. dublin is celebrating its 40th annual st. patrick's day festival. today and tomorrow. the festival will feature irish music and dancing. irish food and a family-friendly carnival. you can get all the information

south bay and head to that dublin festival. a closer look at maps. dublin at the top. closure right here in purple. that's cut off this route of southbound 680 since friday night disrupting the drive back to the south bay. ultimate routes, yellow arrows take you east back towards livermore. highway 84 cuts you down join back to 680 through sunol. orange a longer route dublin, castro valley, 238 and down the nimitz. 880. scheduled to reopen early monday morning. now, there's also another project disrupting things in the east bay. impacting b.a.r.t. riders in the east bay extending to those heading to sfo. >> we have major trackwork taking place between richmond and the red line schs canceled and it will have free buses that will connect those two stations. so a big impact for people traveling from the richmond area down to sfo, you would simply

"today in the bay's" pete suratos is in pleasanton will roadwork is already under way. >> reporter: caltrans is making repairs to a nine-mile stretch of 680 south from the connector all the way to koopman road near sunol. crews will replace a portion of the existing deteriorating roadway with new pavement and caltrans hopes to get a lot of work done in a short time span with a number of repair projects already postponed this year due to weather. >> we're able to pretty much

condense about 40 nights of work into just this weekend. so that's a pretty much the goal of this. >> reporter: it could mean slow drive times for travelers heading to the tri-valley to enjoy st. patrick's day festivities in dublin. city officials expect around 80,000 people to attend the weekend events, but staying hopeful the 680 closure will not be an issue. >> may be some impact obviously because with those closures the freeways could be impacted. however, all access roads to dublin will be open on 580 and 680. >> reporter: drivers who usually use this highway will avoid it but add freeway repairs are long overdue. >> fix the potholes. good. we use it regularly. >> it's dark, you don't know if you're in the other lanes. very dangerous. i say it a lot of friends say at night it's a problem. >> reporter: peter suratos,

"today in the bay." the case against a man stabbing a tech executive to death remains in san francisco. prosecutors say nima momeni. they tried to move the trial out of the city. the judge ruled against that motion, but he made another ruling last week that gives the defense team access to seven years of phone records. a tentative start date for the trial is set for may 20th. happening today it has been three years since the atlanta spa shootings took the lives of eight people targeting asian american communities. today in san francisco various asian american organizations and allies are coming together to honor those victims. it will be an event at 2:00 p.m. in japantown called "stand

together remembering 3/16" featuring asian american leaders, activists artists and commune members addressing anti-asian hate. voter engagement, multiracial solidarity and mental health. more fallout last night in the scandal involving the federal women's prison in the east bay. a judge appointed a special master to oversee the prison. on monday, fbi agents raided the prison in dublin seizing computers, documents and other evidence. the warden also was ousted. that followed new allegations that his staff retaliated against an inmate who testified against the prison. since 2021 at least eight employees charged with sexually abusing the female inmates. five have pleaded guilty. two were convicted at trial. another case is pending. in new york a judge has ruled to postpone former

president donald trump's hush money trial until mid-april. this delay comes because the southern district of new york supplied more than 100,000 pages of discovery. the documents pertain to michael cohen's 2018 guilty plea to numerous charges. trump is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records. meanwhile, former vice president mike pence says he will not support his former boss in his bid for the white house. pence dropped out of the race for the republican presidential nomination back in october. in a new interview with fox news, pence said he will not endorse former president trump in his re-election bid. he says trump's political plan doss not align with the conservative agenda. pence added, he would "never vote for democratic president joe biden" and plans to keep his vote private. the nation's rosies are

gearing up to get one of the country's highest honors. the congressional gold medal. we spoke with some of them. 98-year-old jeanne gibson is among 30 rosie the riveters collectively receiving the medal next month. at just 18 gibson began working as a welder helping build u.s. destroyers during world war ii and now shares her experience with the younger generation at the rosie the riveter museum in richmond telling us she hopes to inspire them. >> we can do it! welcome back. now to our climate in crisis. marin county receiving a big boost to keep its forests healthy and more resilient against climate change. the california wildlife conservation board awarded a $4 million grant to several california park agencies and the

night when the people inside that car shot at the officers. that's when they say they were forced to return fire. those two suspects are now in custody after an overnight investigation all on and off ramps reopened around 5:30 this morning. happening today, three years since the atlanta spa shootings that took lives of eight people. that shooting targeted the asian american community. today in san francisco various asian american organizations and allies will come together to honor those victims. there's an event in san francisco's japantown at 2:00 p.m. it's called "stand together: remembering 3/16" features racial solidarity, mental health among other things. a closure in alameda.

caltrans working to repair a stretch of southbound 680 from the connector down to highway 84 in sunol. laying new pavement on that portion of the failing roadway by caltrans. the freeway reopens monday morning, just in time for the commute. the agency says the work would have taken 40 nighttime closures. this will be a roughly 60-hour weekend closure. about 10,000 people expected to fill the streets form for the oakland marathon. picking up race bibs and packets yesterday. this year the course passes by iconic oakland landmarks and includes a trip across the bay bridge. proceeds go to eat, learn, play, steph and ayesha curry's foundation. includes the kids fun run this morning. sign up on oaklandmarathon.com. as you likely know by now tomorrow is st. patrick's day.
