primaries this week. and back open in time for your morning commute. the update on the weekend closure of interstate 680 in the east bay. this is "today in the bay." let's get this monday started off right. we want to say good morning to you all. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the morning commute. good news when it comes to 680 this morning. good news in the weather department as well. >> the nice weather from the weekend continues today, highs in the 70s and sunshine. we are starting out cool. take a look at our current temperatures around the bay area. you're stepping out the door to 45 degrees in napa and sonoma, it is 50 in los gatos and 53 in san mateo. looking at cupertino and our daily trend we're going to see today, in the mid-40s at 8:00, and then at noon it is 62 degrees. we're headed for the low 70s. very nice and spring-like.

even some upper 70s for parts of the south bay and some low 70s for oakland, while san francisco will hit a high of 66 degrees. we will be cooling down this week, and rain chances by the weekend. we'll talk about that. mike, you're starting with a closure we had in the tri-valley. >> i want to show folks at home what happened over the weekend. this is 680 over on the right side, the closure, completely closed southbound. you can see the clean strip on the right side. they resurfaced a large part of 680, taking the entire weekend saves them a lot of overnight shorter stints. that's great news. we were able to repave that section and it cleared about 90 minutes earlier than the slated time of 4:00 a.m. that's great news for the morning commute. let's take a look at the sensors. after the first couple of hours of the commute starting to ease up, we're now seeing more traffic and folks are going to the dublin interchange and taking 84 through the area. another complication right now in the area, although the sensors are showing minor

slowing at the crash site, there is a scene just around the sunol exit. so watch for that, southbound 680. i'll watch that for you. stick with us and we'll give you updates. a smooth drive into the south bay, the first slowing clears up for the south bay, for san jose. no major issues over here, so, folks, we're going to look toward the bay bridge and the backup. that's formal pretty rapidly. you have some bigger stories that happened, back to you. >> a sad start to our weekday. developing out of san francisco, a memorial is planned for later today to honor the victims in saturday's deadly crash near the west portal muni station. the nonprofit walk sf is inviting people to bring flowers and stuffed animals starting at 5:00 p.m. that story is really heartbreaking. we found out a third person died yesterday, and an infant is still fighting for its life after a car slammed into a bus shelter on saturday. it all happened just after noon, that's when police are telling us that an suv crashed into that stop area where four people were

waiting. yesterday people actually started leaving dozens of bouquets and momentos at the site of that crash. many are still struggling on how to process all of what happened. >> and i was trying to visualize it, because i thought it had happened on the other side of west portal. and they go, no, it's by the library. it's, like, by the library, i just can't imagine what happened, how did it happen. >> still tough for a lot of people. so far, police are not saying much about that investigation. they're also not sharing any details about the driver, nor whether possible charges may be forthcoming. our kris sanchez is following this story and will have a live report in our next half hour. new developments in the tri-valley after a fire destroyed a high school gym. it happened last night at amador valley high school in pleasanton. it's considered a total loss. the larger main gym was not impacted. school reportedly is expected to go on as planned today. there's still no word on how the

fire started. supporters of alameda county district attorney pamela price today plan to address claims of fraud in the petition drive to force a recall vote. now, recall organizers recently turned in what they call more than 123,000 signatures. this is well past the 73,000 mark needed for a ballot measure. because those results of a recent random sampling fell short, the registrar is recounting the signatures manually. price supporters claim some were obtained fraudulently and recently called on the state attorney general to investigate. today's news conference is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. turning to decision 2024, five states, arizona, illinois, ohio, kansas city and florida will hold their presidential primaries tomorrow. and former president trump raising eyebrows after a threat about if he loses the election.

"today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. the middle east continues to be really front and center for the president. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. so president biden is once again saying a two-state solution between israel and palestinians is needed for lasting peace in the middle east. >> we agree about the urgent need to increase humanitarian aid in gaza and get the cease-fire deal, get a cease-fire deal and bring the hostages home and move toward a two-state solution, the only path for lasting peace and security. >> reporter: the president making those remarks on sunday during a st. patrick's day celebration at the white house. his call for humanitarian aid also a primary concern for the people of gaza, along with his hopes for a cease-fire with more talks planned for this week. now, those comments came as part of a joint address with the prime minister of ireland, who also used the opportunity to call for a halt to israeli bombing in gaza.

>> well, in the meantime, former president trump attended a weekly rally in ohio ahead of tomorrow's presidential primary, and the presumptive gop nominee continues to make some headlines over shocking comments. >> reporter: yeah, former president trump making these comments at a rally saturday in addition to promising to place tariffs on cars made abroad if he's elected. trump made this dire threat. >> now, if i don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath, that's going to be the least of it. it's going to be a bloodbath for the country. that will be the least of it. >> reporter: in response, a trump campaign spokesperson tried to clarify telling nbc news, quote, biden's policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and auto workers. biden's re-election campaign says trump was doubling down on threats of political violence. meanwhile, the former president

is doubling down on calls for former congresswoman liz cheney to face prosecution. trump posting on his truth social a link to an article in the federalist that claims cheney suppressed evidence when it came to trump's authorization of the national guard during the january 6th insurrection. cheney, for her part, clapping back at trump on x, calling the claims lies and accusing him of trying to delay his legal trial related to january 6th. >> in the meantime, president biden also calling out trump during an annual d.c. tradition for something that he's actually faced criticism on himself. >> reporter: president biden attended the annual gridiron club and foundation dinner in washington. among the jokes, he called trump too old and mentally unfit to become president. biden also joked his republican rival thinks he's running against former president barack obama.

now, his comments came as president biden continues to deflect criticism over his age. biden is 81, trump is 77. regardless of the outcome, either would be the oldest person sworn in on inauguration day come january. >> we'll see where it goes from here, brie live from washington, thank you so much. 6:08 this morning. we take a live look out in san jose. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect weather-wise throughout the day. if you liked this weekend, i guess today should be a good one, too. >> yes, great day to spend outside. i was noticing at the park the pollen just flying through the air. it's just coming off of the trees, so we're also seeing it raining pollen right now. it's pretty high with oak trees, cedar trees and pine trees putting out the most of that. as we go throughout the day, temperatures going from low 50s in the morning to some low 70s. so it is just gorgeous out there

for the middle of the afternoon, as the weather we had yesterday continues today. and when we take a look at some of these numbers, and spotlight concord, we're used to seeing temperatures in the upper 60s for this date, but we're headed for the mid-70s. all of the temperatures we'll see today will be well above our normal high, as san jose reaches 77, usually in the mid-60s. that's what we'll see by the end of the week, a big cooldown coming our way. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike has been tracking lower gas prices. it seems like they're harder to find. >> i wish i could say there's a cooldown on the pricing. it's holding steady the last week. sunnyvale leads with $4.17 at great gas. next, alameda county, oakland has $4.19 at 98th avenue gas. and in the north bay, vallejo lists $4.21 at central gas down at the bottom on springs road. thank you for sharing through gasbuddy.com. we all share the prices with

as you're getting up and getting ready for the day, you'll need layers because we're starting out in brentwood with temperatures in the low 50s, but then as we go into the afternoon, it warms up quite a bit. it will be in the mid-70s, with sunshine. we'll see a cooldown by the end of the week. we'll talk about that and rain coming back in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at oakland, the nimitz freeway has a smooth flow of traffic. we are picking up the volume on the right side, you might see a box truck on the shoulder. it's out of lanes. i'm watching to see any impact. it looks like they may have just had some issues. we'll track that. i have two crashes affecting folks traveling through sunol and into fremont coming up. wall street is set for a mixed open as investors await guidance this week from the federal reserve on the future of interest rates. now, the markets are coming off of a negative week as concerns about inflation have really pressured stocks, even sparking some anxiety the fed may be leaning toward keeping those

rates higher for longer. the feds begin a two-day meeting tomorrow with the decision wednesday afternoon. now, also in focus this week, data on housing, jobless claims, plus earnings from fedex and nike. apple may soon borrow from google for features on its phone. apple is in talks with google to install the gemini ai engine. google has already paid billions to be the default for apple devices. tim cook said his company is investing significantly in generative ai, and apple may release its next generation operation system as soon as june. and if playing games while looking for your next job sounds appealing, linkedin soon may be here for you, because the social network giant is actually developing in-app games for its users. tech crunch confirms the company

will tap into the same kind of puzzle games that is making wordle such a big hit. early efforts include games calls queens and cross climb. linkedin is also experimenting with organizing employees' scores by workplace and companies are able to be ranked by their scores. 6:16 right now. new at 6:00, dungeness crab season will continue as planned for now. one environmental group says it's a bad idea. the department of fish and game and wildlife in california deemed it is safe to continue crab fishing in monterey, with humpback whale season just around the corner officials were worried about the crab fishing lines endangering the animals. the department found there are not many whales in the area just yet, so the crab fishing season can continue. one monterey-based nonprofit, oceana, says this is a bad decision and it may be too late. >> by the time they do another

risk assessment, march 28th, they can't just say immediately get out of the gear out of the water. they need to give fishermen time to get it off the water. >> the department will reassess in a few weeks and make a decision on whether to end the season. it was a movie weekend for lilly the tiger at oakland zoo, and zookeepers are hoping they might pick up a few tips. >> the zoo posted video showing lilly closely watching a documentary about tigers. zookeepers have been taking care of the cub last month when she was rescued from a privately owned facility. she's been recovering from injuries. the zoo says once she fully heals, they will be moving her to a new facility specializing in big cats. >> she's intently watching that. >> so beautiful. >> i haven't seen it, i'm guessing it's not the "tiger kingdom" movie. maybe tigger would be nice to watch. >> adding it to the play list.

>> just bouncing around. well, we have some great weather out there, as we're getting started on this monday. it will be cooling off over the next few days. so this will be the warmest day of the week. and then we're also starting out with some coastal fog, some patchy fog in some spots, but overall it's going to be a sunny day. as we go throughout the week, the dry weather continues through at least midweek, and then rain chances start to come back on friday, with a big cooldown for the weekend. so let's take a look at how the day had shape up in oakland with a few clouds at 7:00. we're starting to see it clearing out at 9:00, and at 11:00 it is mostly sunny. it's going to be a very pleasant day as our temperatures make it into the upper 60s and low 70s. martinez headed for 75 degrees. 73 in napa and novato and we'll see upper 70s for san jose to san martin. you can see the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. eventually it's going to cool off.

we just come down a few degrees with los gatos reaching 73, upper 60s for mountain view and upper 60s for oakland and novato. on wednesday, we're in the mid-60s, some of this is more close than normal for this time of year, as we start to see temperatures cooling down, more clouds. but overall we're seeing the clouds and many storm systems blocked by high pressure. once that high pressure breaks down, moves off to the east, we'll start to see these low pressure systems coming back, which will mean rain, as well as cooler air, and even some more sierra snow. so we're going to see a snowy weekend for the sierra, while we get rain, and look at how much cooler it's going to be. gilroy we're going from mid-70s today to low 70s on thursday. and then seasonable temperatures for friday, but we're only up to 60 degrees, and that continues into early next week, with the cool weather. so it will be time to get the sweaters and the umbrellas back out, but at least for today and

tomorrow we can still enjoy those temperatures in the 70s and sunshine in the forecast. nice little spring-like feel before we go back to winter this weekend. mike, you were starting with an update in the tri-valley. >> the big one is the weekend closure is cleared. it cleared about 90 minutes before the 4:00 deadline, south 680 was moving smoothly. we see a build for the sensors, more traffic coming in on westbound 580. that's not a surprise. we do have a crash and there is slowing approaching the sunol exit. i believe there may be a crew assisting the crash that happened in the southbound commute direction as the commute builds. we have more traffic coming in on 84 and that is a smooth flow. it got a really heavy flow over the weekend and then calmed down this morning. highway 4, highway 37, showing a standard pattern. we have a crash 121, probably around highway 12 there in the north bay. the bay bridge toll plaza has a backup. we have vasco road still under a half hour. >> thanks, mike. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds.

warned you about thieves posing as airline employees. some viewers like alice in mountain view who did a simple web search for an airline phone number said they ended up calling a scammer who posed as an airline agent and charged them unnecessary fees. some thieves are still at it. this woman just alerted our nbc sister station in dallas. she called what she thought was american airlines phone number and later learned she was off by one digit. before that realization, she called the number and an alleged agent told her to fork over 900 bucks to fix a ticket glitch. >> i just want to make sure if you understand, if you don't pay for this seat, then when you get to the airport, your husband is going to be on standby. i specifically said to him, are you a scammer? he said, no, i've got all your flight information here. >> he was a scammer. there was no ticket error, no need to spend 900 bucks. luckily, sam smelled a rat and spoke up to warn you. if you're flying and need to contact your airline, dial carefully.

for this afternoon, and what's usually our high temperature, it's usually in the mid-60s. but we're headed for the mid-70s in santa rosa, 75 in concord and 71 today in oakland. we'll talk about a cooldown for the end of the week and when we get rain coming back in just a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. now to a heartbreaking reminder of just how quickly life can change for anyone, including commuters in san francisco's west portal. >> there's a growing memorial at that bus stop. this is where three people were killed and a baby critically injured over the weekend. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live for us in san francisco this morning. kris, do we know how the baby is doing? >> reporter: as far as we know from the last reports we got, the baby was still fighting for their life in the hospital. we expect later today we might find out more about the baby, the child, and the two adults that were also involved in this crash. there's also a memorial service

planned for later on today. in case you missed it this weekend, this was a horrific crash, an suv plowed into a bus stop outside the west ulloa library, the west portal library at ulloa and lenox. it was right around noontime on saturday when that suv crashed and that led to one person dying there at the scene, one little child, and then a woman was taken to the hospital, she now has passed away. according to reports, these were all members of the same family. the driver of the suv also taken to the hospital, and people in the neighborhood just shocked that it all happened. >> i have my child, i have kids, and i don't want to imagine what the family is feeling this moment, how heartbroken for all the community. >> reporter: walk san francisco is planning a vigil at 5:00 this

afternoon where this happened at ulloa street and west portal avenue right by the library. these people are the eighth, ninth and tenth victims of traffic fatalities in the city. we don't know what the factor was at this point, we don't know whether there was speed or any sort of medical emergency. but we do know that it appears that traffic engineering was not part of the problem. in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> so sad. affects so many lives all at once. kris, thank you. well, we are following some breaking news just into our newsroom, less than two weeks before the start of the baseball season, the giants are saying farewell to their long-time public address announcer. >> first baseman, number 9, brandon bell. >> in a brand new release, the giants say renel brooks-moon will not return to the team this season, after 24 years behind the microphone. her first year with the team coincided with the giants' first

year at the new ballpark. she's been there ever since, through more than 2,000 games. the team calls it a mutual agreement, after a new contract couldn't be reached and the team plans to honor her with a booth renaming sometime this season. so far, the team is not indicating who will replace her. new developments in the tri-valley after a fire destroyed a high school gym. this happened last night at amador valley high school in pleasanton. firefighters say the fire broke out at the gym but it's considered the school's smaller gym more than 100 years old. the larger gym, the main one, not impacted. school officials say that they are working closely with authorities. >> we're obviously working very closely with our local law enforcement and fire agencies to assess the damage and any impact to school. >> now, school and classes this morning is reportedly expected

to go on as planned today. right now there's still no word on how that fire started. happening today, oakland alameda county and state leaders plan to come together to address growing crime concerns. a meeting is scheduled to take place this morning focused on the hegenberger corridor. just last week taco bell confirmed it shut down its dining room in the area due to safety concerns. in-n-out and denny's echoing similar sentiments. they're focused on improving public safety and oakland mayor sheng thao is expected to attend. the plan to rebuild trust between the community and police department will be front and center in antioch. the police oversight commission will meet at 6:30 tonight, the seven-member group is made up of

people from a variety of backgrounds who were sworn in last month. it will be similar to other police commissions across the bay area serving as a governorer board to create accountability for antioch police as the city deals with the fallout of last year's racist text messaging scandal. we are moving you forward on preparing for public health and weather related emergencies. now, a new report is calling on california to better prepare. the trust for america's health organization recently released its ready or not 2024 report. now, it finds that while emergency preparedness has improved in some areas, public health officials and policymakers need to do more to strengthen it. california scored in the lowest tier, along with 15 other states. researchers are calling for improvements in things like flu vaccinations, hospital safety scores and paid time off. but there are also some strengths, including state funding for covid and telehealth

networks. >> critically investing in public health and prevention will help to ensure that we're better prepared for the next disaster or emergency, that we save lives, and that we really help to strengthen and have healthier, more resilient communities. >> the report also calls on the entire nation to prepare for extreme weather, and particularly excessive heat, especially protecting children, older adults and people who work outdoors, as well as members of the underserved communities. were you outdoors this weekend enjoying some of that spring-like temperatures? taking a live look outside overlooking dublin. they had some nice st. patrick's day celebrations there. kari has a look at our forecast for this monday morning. you say a repeat of yesterday? >> a repeat of yesterday. it's going to be a great one. actually, the warmest day of the week. we are going to see some changes over the next few days. we're starting out with some fog near the coast, but for most of the bay area it is a clear morning, and then we see sunshine headed our way for the afternoon. the dry weather continues

through at least midweek, but then rain chances start to increase on friday into the weekend. so take a look at the weather we're enjoying. starting out with low 50s in san jose at 9:00, and as we go into the afternoon we'll reach into the mid to upper 70s. now, we are also well above normal for this time of year, so it's going to start to go back to our usual high temperatures, gradually, as we go through the week. we'll bring it down a couple of degrees for tomorrow and then a few more degrees on wednesday. by the weekend, we'll only hit highs up to about 60 degrees. so we'll talk about those changes coming up. mike, now you have a new crash in concord. >> i do. we have a couple of older crashes that are clearing from the roadway. i think the one on mission has cleared and the one on 280 we just saw. that's an easy map we just showed you for anywhere south of walnut creek. heading down to walnut creek, south 680, this crash at monument boulevard is just past the merge with 242. it will make both of those drives tougher. 242 is the most impacted.

there are your two right lanes blocked from the latest report. this could be an issue into pleasant hill if it doesn't clear quickly. the build comes off of highway 4 and we have slowing on your westbound routes here for 37, the richmond bridge and the bay bridge. now, in richmond over the weekend we had a closure, major track work on the red line, the red line service was stopped over the weekend. it has been restored. that track work, as well as the tracks, the roads, the rails and even the vehicles themselves make us really appreciate what's going on with regard to all the work that the transit employees have to do. and today a special note, before you head out of the house, and perhaps on transit, you should know today is transit employee appreciation day. i talked to b.a.r.t. spokesperson jim allison about the day and what the goal of the day is. >> the goal of transit worker appreciation day is very simple. it's simply an acknowledgment that the people who do the work to get you where you need to go on public transportation are people, too. say hello, wave to your vta

good monday morning. it is now 6:43. we're taking a look at our north bay day planner, and santa rosa at 9:00, it's still chilly in the upper 40s. look at our trend throughout the day, as we head for the 70s, it's going to be nice with not as much wind, and we keep the sunshine. we'll talk about more changes ahead for the week in a few minutes. we've had changes on our bridges. i'm looking at our live cameras and showing you the san mateo bridge where there's brake tapping and slowing for the volume. i'm looking at the bay bridge and the entire span does look like things are getting more sluggish toward san francisco. i'm checking the reports and we'll show you what we have because the visual evidence shows that you might have to give a little extra time. well, just into our newsroom, united airlines ceo is trying to reassure travelers after a series of recent

in-flight issues. the ceo sent an email to fliers saying in part, quote, safety is our highest priority and at the center of everything we do. it goes on to say that unfortunately in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety, end quote. he continued to say that he is working with employees on the safety procedures, all while the faa is investigating the mishaps. he says that none of the recent incidents is related. now, last friday a piece of a united plane fell flying from sfo to oregon. workers did not discover the missing panel until the plane landed. two weeks ago a transpacific united plane lost a wheel during takeoff from sfo. the plane had to reroute and land safely at l.a.x. new findings show just how wary a lot of people are about

self-driving technology. aaa finds a full two-thirds of u.s. drivers, 66%, are fearful of autonomous vehicles. another 25% are uncertain. many of those same people do say they want their next car to have some self-driving features like automatic emergency braking or lane assistance. researchers say the way consumers embrace automated technology may determine if the roads become safer one day. >> i think it's important for automakers to take away the idea that there's demand for the systems they're building today and that the best way to get to this fully automated future, if that's where we want to head, is to make those systems better so people have more confidence in them. >> the study also finds four in ten drivers are either unsure or fully believe some cars on the market can drive while you sleep. that, of course, is not true. there are no fully self-driving cars for purchase in the u.s. new this morning, tensions

appear to be higher in the workplace in response to feelings being generated by this year's presidential election. the new report by the nonprofit society for human resource management finds two-thirds of u.s. workers experience or witness workplace incivility over the last month, half cited it over the past week, and one-third believe it will get worse over the next 12 months. incivility includes being respectful to, interrupting, micromanaging and interrupting your coworkers. they believe the current political environment is generating much of the negativity. >> the second thing giving rise, perhaps, is the use of technology. we all know when you think about how brave people are whenever they can hide behind the cloak of perceived anonymity, which technology enables, perhaps people feel like they can be more uncivil in those interactions when technology is

taking a look at our high temperatures, headed for the mid-70s in santa rosa and oakland, as well as concord. now, we're usually in the mid-60s this time of year, but we are well above that. and the warm weather continues into tomorrow as well. so we're opening up the view to see what else is out there with the clouds that are, for now, being blocked by high pressure. but we'll start to make a move toward the bay area once the high pressure breaks down, that's giving us all of this warm and sunny weather. we're back to the cool and rainy weather for the weekend, so big shift in what we're going to see over the next few days, going from spring to back to winter, with the sierra getting quite a bit of snow. let's talk about what to expect if you're heading through or to the sierra this weekend. it's going to be very difficult, travel is going to be pretty hard. we can see about 2 feet or about 1 foot of snow for south lake tahoe, but possibly 2 to 3 feet of snow for kingvale and some of the upper elevations.

look at our top stories on "today in the bay," including new plans to remember the victims in the horrible crash at a san francisco bus stop. >> this as we learned a third victim died yesterday, an infant is still fighting for its life. the tragedy unfolded saturday when an suv slammed into a bus shelter near the west portal muni station. yesterday stunned neighbors left dozens of bouquets and momentos at the site. so far, police are saying little about the investigation with the alleged driver in the hospital. a memorial is planned for 5:00 p.m. at that site. organizers are inviting people to bring flowers and stuffed animals. new developments this morning in the tri-valley after a fire destroyed a high school gym. it happened last night at amador valley high school in pleasanton. the gym, total loss. but this is considered the school's small gym. the larger main gym not impacted. school is reportedly expected to go on as planned today. right now there's still no word
