>> good thursday morning to you. thank you for joining us. it's 6:00 right now. i am laura garcia. i am marcus washington. getting us caught up with what is happening today, mike has a look at the commute. but first let's look at the forecast. kari hall has more on what we can expect. it's a gorgeous day, and on the weekend, we are going to have cooler and wetter weather coming in. we will take it in today as the sunshine continues, and also comfortable temperatures for the afternoon. it will become cloudy tomorrow with showers moving in and temperatures dropping with a chance of thunderstorms on saturday. now, a look at our highs for today, it's a few degrees above normal, in the upper 60s for the east bay. mid-60s for the peninsula into san francisco. the north bay in the upper 60s, but tomorrow we see the drop in those numbers as we see more clouds coming in and once again, rain for the afternoon.

we will talk more about the timeline coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are seeing one potential problem in the east bay? >> potential. the map is mostly green, and the sensors are what you would expect right now. we are watching for a possible problem for westbound 24. there's a disabled vehicle reported as you come out of arenda. we don't see slowing over the last few minutes, so i will think that everything is off to the shoulder. we will continue to track that because the volume will build out of the caldicot tunnel. all lanes are filled but you see there's movement. back to you. happening today, encouraging women to pursue a career in law enforcement. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning.

we're talking about whether the san francisco department there is very close to even reaching some of the goals, ginger. >> reporter: that's right, laura. good morning to you. there are some big goals for the san francisco sheriff's office, and they have work to do before reaching those numbers. the san francisco's sheriff's office is hosting the annual women leadership conference today, and it's a 30 by 30 pledge that is looking to increase the number of female deputies to 30% by 3030. currently they have 96 females, that counts for 13.3% of its sworn staff. the goal is to more than double that in the next six years. there are 624 males with 200 vacancies. the search sheriff's office assistant sheriff carter, recently spoke to "today in the bay," and she says recent

research shows the positive impact female deputies bring to the sheriff's office. it suggests female officers useless force and less excessive force, and they are named in fewer complaints and lawsuits, and see better outcomes for crime victims, especially in sexual assault cases. >> it's important that we have more females in our departments so that a victim of the heinous crimes have a person who looks like them, who represents them, that they feel more comfortable with, can come forward and share their stories. >> the women's leadership conference kicks off in several hours, this morning with 21 distinguished women from different law enforcement agencies across the bay area. they are taking the center stage to inspire the next generation of leaders in law enforcement. laura, it's timely as we continue to celebrate women's month, but as you heard from

assistant sheriff carter yourself, beyond women's month, today is about the representation. >> the full interview is on roku, other streaming platforms and on nbcbayarea.com. and overnight antony blinken back in the middle east and taking immediate steps to push for a cease-fire in gaza. brie jackson is live in washington this morning. what can we expect here, brie? >> good morning, marcus. the secretary of state spoke to a saudi arabian broadcaster yesterday and he said a u.s. issued a draft resolution to the u.n. security council for an immediate cease-fire tied to the release of hostages. this is blinken arriving on wednesday. the resolution is a big move as

the u.s. vetoed three previous u.n. resolutions, and blinken believes the deal is possible. it would include a pause in the fighting and a potential release of the hostages. >> that would bring immediate relief to so many people who are suffering in gaza, the children, the women, the men. it would allow a much greater expansion of humanitarian assistance getting to them, and it could create the conditions to have a lasting and enduring cease-fire. >> qatar would be mediating this. apparently, the negotiators are cautiously optimistic about this deal. >> brie, thank you.

new at 6:00, the chp releasing video of what was an air gun shooting two days ago in hayward. take a look at the video. there was a man driving his truck on 880 near interstate 238 when somebody in a gray car starts firing from an off-ramp. the driver was okay, but the truck was hit twice by projectiles. the chp said the video helped to track down the suspect and a replica gun they believe was used. offering $200,000 for information leading to an arrest in a brutal double murder eight years ago. a 27-year-old woman and a 54-year-old male were shot to death in the mission district on 16th street. the victims were homeless and

living in a wooden box on the sidewalk when somebody shot them. three years ago police first released this sketch of the suspect. they say if you have any information, you should call sfpd. so far teams are coming up empty in their search for a hiker. a woman left to carmel valley. they have search dogs and helicopters. and then a committee in san josé now raising money to restore one sign, and they are hoping to raise money to help other businesses keep their signs. >> if you just appreciate the

fast-moving river of upper level winds that will drive storms our way, well, it's starting to take a dive. with that, once again, it will bring a change in our weather, and it's no longer going to be nice, sunny and warm. we are not the only ones going to see a major cooldown and shift as the jet stream dips, we will see that across much of the country and that will make headlines over the next few days. looking at rain arriving tomorrow afternoon, first starting in the north bay, and off and on showers getting heavier late friday evening. another wave on saturday that will be off and on throughout the day. overall throughout the weekend, it will taper off on saturday morning, and we can see an inch of rainfall, and maybe half an inch of rain in livermore and closer to an inch of rain in san josé. that's a pretty good soaking, but it comes over the course of a few days between late friday, throughout the day on saturday and then tapering off on sunday.

we are going to have a break from the rain on monday and tuesday with more showers possible on wednesday. we are also looking at a significant cooldown over the next several days. mike, you were saying you may have an issue heading out of richmond? >> you see the crowd here, and this is typical timing for a lot more traffic to go across from richmond into san rafael. this is the bridge toll plaza here, but there could be a disabled vehicle across the span blocking a right lane on the span. we are looking at the speeds starting to dive down a little bit over here, 40 miles per hour, that's slow across the span and typically because of the volume. somebody reported a disabled vehicle past the toll plaza. in through richmond and through richmond, moving smoothly. we did have a disabled vehicle removed from the report, so we have east bay 24 and that should be on the right shoulder now.

it took facebook hours, if you will remember, marcus, for it to start trading on its debut, and that was ten years ago. but it took a long time. stock markets open, and reddit not yet trading. >> we will be waiting and watching. thanks, scott. developing for you in the south bay, regular customers at a san josé coffee shop in shock after the arrest of a man accused of hiding a small camera in the public restroom. bob redell is live outside of the police department in san josé. bob, the scary part about this, we are talking about dozens of people that were recorded. >> reporter: correct. a maintenance worker found the hidden camera in a starbucks market here in san josé at coleman and taylor, and authorities say it recorded 91 people on january 30th, and the victims ranging in age from 4 years old to 85 years old.

the day after the recordings, the maintenance worker discovered the camera under the sink pointing towards the toilet. one woman says her and her children use this bathroom and is worried they could have used it that day. >> just to have people looking at you, that's insane. >> when you see a smoke detector in a bathroom, that doesn't make sense. or why does this coat hook like victorian style and it's on the back of a bathroom stall. >> that was a security expert on what to look for if you are inside a public restroom. last week police arrested this man, louie juarez, and they

stop now died. multiple sources confirmed the news to nbc bay area news last night. the other three members of the same family all died when the accident happened on saturday as they waited for that bus at the muni station. the father was a brazilian national and worked at apple. the other victims was his wife, and their 1-year-old son, joaquin. there's no official decision from the d.a.'s office whether or not the driver will be criminally charged. and then fed up with theft at a major supermarket, one north bay police chief is asking for help. this is the letter the police chief sent to safeway stores. they are asking the store to hire extra security and says the department doesn't have the resources to deal with the constant thieves and loitering,

mostly from high school students. the letter continued to say in part, continued failure to address these concerns not only jeopardizes the well-being of the customers but also undermines the reputation and integrity of safeway. we reached out to safeway but have not heard back. not much changed in the dead heat involving two candidates vying to replace eschew in congress. now, this is a position that flip-flopped from earlier this week. whoever claims the second spot will face-off against sam liccardo in the fall. the elections office is awaiting for some voters to respond.

it will be cooler for the weekend as well as off and on showers that will continue into next week. a look at our highs today, with santa rosa up to 68 degrees. 69 degrees in mountain view. low 70s from san josé to the south county. fairfield checking in with a high of 71 today. as you probably noticed the bottom of the screen with the 7-day forecast, it will be cooler this weekend. still mild tomorrow for most of us, but as the clouds come in the rain will continue to drop several more degrees. this is what is coming in. the storm system and cooler temperatures, and we are starting to see the clouds, and the fast-moving -- it's like basically a river in the sky, the jet stream that carries storms our way has been wavy, but it's giving us a break from

any rain. that's about to change as it begins to dive to the south. it's going to drive in the storms into the bay area. we're not the only ones that got a little taste of spring, but going back to winter, we will see that across much of the country. you will probably see the headlines about that. looking at when the rain gets here, early tomorrow afternoon, starting in the north bay and continuing to get heavier for the evening and making its way across the rest of the bay area. there will be a few breaks in rain activity tapering off on sunday. most areas looking at half an inch of rain for most of the drier spots, considering there are areas near the coastline and north bay with over an inch of rainfall throughout the weekend. the sierra is looking at a decent snowfall, probably about a foot of snow for tahoe, and 29 inches possible in kingvale with

it was the starbucks on coleman and taylor in san josé. authorities say close to 100 people were caught on video. last week police arrested louie juarez. officers seized several firearms and other microcameras from his home. that includes one hidden in a key fob and another in a tiny soccer ball. sometime this morning san francisco's reddit expected to start trading on the new york stock exchange. this was the opening bell. if you don't know, reddit is almost exclusively known for its message boards. it's generating $500 million for reddit, putting the company's value at more than $6 million. shares will open at $34. >> all right. we have sunshine in our forecast today. a few more clouds.
