off mid-flight. the message from federal agents. everything we worked for, they destroyed our whole restaurant. >> the owners of a popular restaurant show up to find their business ransacked, windows smashed. the sobering response to a crime they never expected. also, a growing trend among young women, freezing their eggs with costs that can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. how some businesses are responding to that greater demand. this is "today in the bay." this is also friday morning, 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit. let's talk about that friday forecast. meteorologist kari hall has it and we know where this is going [ laughter ] >> we've been talking about it all week long. it's been so nice and spring-like, and then today is when the rain comes back. we're also going to have some cooler temperatures. so at least we do have the

morning with some sunshine, but this afternoon the wind and the rain will arrive, and there will be a chance of thunderstorms as we go throughout the weekend as that rain comes in, just kind of off and on. and then some breaks in the rain on sunday. looking ahead, early next week there will be a break in the rain, but then it will be back toward the middle of next week, and we're starting out this morning with, once again, some sunshine. here we are at 1:00, and we start to see the rain approaching the north bay, up around ukiah we're going to start to see showers, and then making its way through the north bay into san francisco in time for dinner, and that evening commute. and it's going to continue to spread into the rest of the bay area later on tonight. and once again, it's just going to be off and on throughout the weekend. saturday looks pretty soggy, even into the afternoon to evening, and then we are going to see a brief break on sunday. so i'll talk more about that. mike, you already have a crash reported on the peninsula? >> yeah, this is our palo alto

camera northbound, i saw flashing lights. we often have crews clearing around university. as we're looking southbound, very light traffic suddenly, just a few cars heading southbound. that is the direction where a crash is reported coming into the area. didn't seem like a big deal. there may have been a traffic break if they had to move a vehicle from the center divide to the shoulder. we'll keep watching the live camera. everything is calm in the east bay, we have a little slowing through the altamont pass, and as you're coming through contra costa county, perhaps opposite your commute, slow sensors. we'll watch to make sure those clear as well. >> thank you very much. 5:02, and happening now, the manhunt for suspects behind a triple shooting in sacramento. one man is dead, two others hurt. it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon at a light rail station. police say two suspects are believed to be armed and dangerous. investigators are looking into a

stabbed. taylor underwent surgery and survived. she is now 97 years old. san francisco police arrested the suspect, 35-year-old, who was arrested five times in 2020 for burglaries and once in 2016 for homicide. at the time of his arrest, sfpd says he was wearing an ankle monitor. he eventually pleaded guilty to charges, including attempted murder, elder abuse and assault. the district attorney recommended a sentence of 12 years. on friday, the judge sentenced him to probation. the proposed terms will be further outlined today. >> i don't know that there's a lot that the community can do, aside from hold demonstrations to show what our intentions are. you know, we can ask for better rehabilitation services for the people who qualify for them who need them, and who can be rehabilitated. >> reporter: now, the rally for ms. taylor will be outside the hall of justice at 8:15.
5:06 am
community members are then expected to go into the courthouse to listen as the terms of his probation will be discussed. we'll be there, we'll bring you updates throughout the morning. back to you. >> thank you very much, ginger. secretary of state blinken is in tel aviv today to meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the prime minister is threatening to launch a large-scale ground offensive on the city of rafah. blinken is working to deter an israeli offensive, while also advocating for an immediate cease-fire. today marks the first time the u.s. puts forward a united nations security council resolution calling for a cease-fire in gaza, with ties to hostages being released. a vote on the resolution will take place this morning. overnight, new confirmation the fbi is conducting a criminal investigation into the alaska

"today" show sits down with one doctor to learn more about the growing phenomenon. >> is this something you're actually seeing at this clinic?
5:09 am
>> absolutely. when we first rolled out egg freezing, the percentage of patients under 30 that were coming in were about 1%, and now we're about 10% of our patients are coming in. and the amount of egg freezing we're doing has increased fivefold in the last ten years. >> you can see the full story ahead on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. right after "today in the bay." new this morning, some of those thirsty beer lovers in the north bay are lining up. they spent the night outside last night to be one of the first to experience the holy grail of beers. later this morning, the russian river brewing company will release this year's pliny the younger triple ipa and this marks the 20th anniversary of the popular brew. it is only available at two russian river brewing company pubs, and fans will be rewarded since they waited outside because they'll get a chance to buy up to three 10-ounce pours,

[ laughter ] >> i want to get home before this rain starts. we're going to see that coming in later on this afternoon. we do have some time and we're already seeing the clouds coming in, and the rain is farther to the north. but as we go throughout the day, the north bay will see the rain first and it may pick up in santa rosa, starting at around noon. but then getting heavier as we go into the afternoon, and temperatures much cooler. we're going to stay in the 50s here and we're looking at some still mild temperatures for parts of the east bay and the south bay where that rain takes a little longer to get to, we'll most likely see that around 5:00 to 6:00 this evening. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices.
5:11 am
>> it's friday, sometimes folks make an escape to tahoe, via vallejo, heading north. that's where the lowest price is for the bay, $4.23 at royal gas on tennessee street. that's the one at 29. there's another one farther down that's 10 cents higher. the best in alameda county is $4.27, hayward's r stores on hesperian boulevard. and $4.29, right where it turns to san carlos. we'll look over to the peninsula, i checked with chp and the southbound 101 crash, there was no traffic break listed. there's no crash listed. that's all gone and southbound 101 does see some more headlights. i think they did do something temporarily, but the peninsula is clear. so is the east bay. just slowing in the altamont. back to you. want to strike it rich this weekend? there's a few big lotteries you

>> she won't remember us. >> i don't remember. >> send them to voicemail. [ laughter ] >> you know -- >> i was waiting for her to go, no, i love you guys. >> you know i love you all. all right, yep, we're starting out with temperatures in the low 50s this morning. it is a little bit warmer compared to the past few days, and we are going to see a cooldown coming in, thanks to the clouds and this cold front that's approaching. and it's also going to bring us some rain, so right now we're starting out dry for the morning commute. but the evening commute will be impacted by that rain coming in. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. it shows a lot of rain icons over the next few days. so it won't rain the entire time. we know how it goes this time of year. we have some showers, it's off and on, it's in here and out of here. so that's what we're going to see. in san jose, at least we do have a sunny start. you can head out to the farmers
5:21 am
market, you can get an outdoor lunch, and also run some errands before the rain comes in. it should arrive around 4:00 to 6:00 this evening. and looking at the timing for the rest of the bay area, it does start out in the north bay a little bit earlier with spotty showers that will become more widespread, and heavier, as we approach the evening commute. that will be moving into san francisco, down the peninsula, into parts of the east bay. the rest of the bay area seeing much of the rain later on tonight, and just off and on throughout the day tomorrow. there's really a pretty dry period if you do have some outdoor plans. i can't tell you at 3:00 it's going to be dry. it will be hit or miss throughout the day on saturday. and then we should see a break on sunday afternoon. so during this time in total we're looking at about 3/4 of an inch of rain for san jose, but it could be a lot higher as you head up the hills and into parts of the north bay, as well as the coastline, over 1 inch of
5:22 am
rainfall is expected this weekend and into early next week. there will be a brief break on monday and tuesday, but then on wednesday and thursday i'm tracking more rain, so that will not give us a chance to have a significant warm-up here. and it looks like that rain extends possibly into next weekend, so i'll be watching that. mike, you're still saying it looks pretty good out there? >> yeah, the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a steady flow of traffic. we don't have metering lights, we don't have a backup. that might not happen for a half hour or closer to 6:15. the only slowing is counter-commute, there's no reason for that. we just have a little slower sensor reads as you're going into concord and pittsburg and bay point. across the bay, we have a nice, easy drive. slowing for the altamont, we expect feeding toward 84, perhaps slowing toward sunol and the south bay is clear. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up next on "today in

happy friday. we're filling out a bracket of our own. we dug through our complaint database for the most common complaints you send us. call it our egregious eight to start. here there are in no particular order. internet, cell service, banking, stores, home repair, travel, car buying, online shopping and government. all right, we kept sifting to get to our frustrating four. let's take a look at who advanced. banking, stores, travel and government gripes. all right, now on to our terrible two. who will make it into the finals? well, it's going to be stores and travel. when we tallied up all the complaints, travel emerged at
5:27 am
the number one spot. we're getting more gripes about travel than anything else, flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, insurance. you name it, we received a complaint about it. for example, we're wrapping up a case for david in san jose to get an $1,800 travel insurance refund for a cruise he canceled right after he booked. the policy never kicked in. so getting back the price he paid for the policy will put $1,800 right back where it belongs. if you need an assist scoring a refund, let us know. scan the qr code on screen to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great weekend. >> you, too. thanks, chris. next, the top stories we're following, including march madness starts with a surprising upset. why cinderella is waking up this morning in oakland, but nowhere near the east bay. and stanford women start their quest today. a look at how they stack up when it comes to a national championship run. b.a.r.t. is installing new

5:32 am
so as you're heading out the door, make sure you're wearing a few layers because it's a mild start, but it will stay cool into the afternoon. we'll have rain and wind throughout the weekend, and even a chance of thunderstorms, and rain chances come back again next week. for livermore, we're starting out with a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures in the low 50s. it will still be a mild day. the rain gets there a little later, in time for the evening commute, with some scattered showers and then getting heavier later tonight. we are going to see a wide range in temperatures because of the arrival of that rain. we're only up to 60 in santa rosa. we'll talk more about that and sierra snow as well. mike, now you have a crash on highway 17. >> it happened a few minutes ago. no slowing on the sensors and no injuries reported. we're glad about that. we'll track that coming through campbell heading toward the transition to 880. highway 17 over the santa cruz mountains, as well as northbound 101 out of the south county all moving very smoothly.
5:33 am
light friday, as you would imagine. we'll just track that crash on 17. in the east bay, we have contra costa county still at speed for all these freeways, including highway 4. highway 37 might see a little slowing out of vallejo. nothing major. there's a little slowing on the incline just past the toll plaza. no metering lights yet. a nice, beautiful view of the city lights. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new this morning, b.a.r.t. is installing another set of remodelled gates in an attempt to crack down on fare jumpers. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live at the b.a.r.t. station. i was just wondering, how well are they doing at stopping people from fare evading? >> reporter: these have been installed, the only place they've been installed are west oakland for two and a half months, and b.a.r.t. tells us they have been effective. later this morning, they're going to start installing these at the civic center, and they'll eventually be installed
5:34 am
system-wide by the end of next year. they're much taller, full body doors. these are prototypes, they're testing out different types of the polycarbonate versus the metal. these locks are software driven. over here, the far left, they're testing out one that's not only software driven, but mechanically locking as well. you can see there's not as much wiggle room. they are leaning toward that. the whole point of installing these, as you mentioned, is to stop the fare evasion. we've got jim allison with b.a.r.t. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> reporter: you don't have data on the past two and a half months, but what have you seen? >> we've seen people at west oakland who fare evaded, they'll come down the stairs and see the taller gates and make a reverse and go back and find some other station. so we've seen anecdotally they're very effective. >> reporter: the software driven locks ms. mechanical, software means you can in theory push
5:35 am
through, but it takes effort. mechanical is more difficult. >> the mechanical is more difficult to push through, but the software are very difficult, too. there was not reporter trying to do it and he couldn't do it. it's not impossible, if someone is an nfl linebacker, they could probably get through. we're not going to encourage people to challenge it. but it is very effective. >> reporter: you obviously can't hop over them like you can on the current ones. you are saying something interesting earlier, not only does this save b.a.r.t. money, it's a $10 or $15 million problem, fare evasion, but culturally. >> right. obviously we need every penny that we can get, so the money is a factor. but the biggest factor is boosting feelings of safety. so less people fare evading into the system should improve the feelings of safety for people. and it's also a feeling of people who are playing by the
5:36 am
rules and paying to ride, when they see people cheat the system with impunity, that's frustrating and not right. >> reporter: west oakland b.a.r.t. have the the prototypes since last december. later this morning we're going to start installing at civic center and the next stations in line, you've got civic center starting today, montgomery, powell, 24th street, sfo, fruitvale, richmond and antioch. all scheduled to get new gates by 2025. $86 million is funded right now. they're still looking for an additional $4 million which they think they'll be able to get. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest, bob. a man who stabbed and nearly killed a soccer fan at levi's stadium last summer will spend the next seven years in prison. this after a judge sentenced the attacker, alejandro garcia
5:37 am
yesterday. it happened last july during a friendly featuring mexico's national team. the cameras showed fans getting into a massive brawl there, along with the stabbing. the video helped police track down the attacker. investigators said the knife missed the victim's heart and neck by just a few inches. people in one east bay city are souring on the plan to open new pickleball courts, so much so they're organizing protests starting later today. developers are transforming part of richmond's craneway pavilion into pickleball courts for a weekend tournament. that's despite the fact city leaders say a pickleball court proposal was rejected last year. a second proposal for a permanent court and a club is still under review by the city and the state. while the developer insists the tournament is a standalone event, it's not sitting well with opponents. >> this isn't about pickleball. it's about public space. we want to make sure that the pavilion stays at a public
5:38 am
space. >> developers did not comment to nbc bay area, but in the past have said the proposal is within the existing lease agreement. supporters argue the public events won't go away and the venue will get more use. the council members are expected to debate the proposal again as soon as next week. south bay leaders, they are taking new measures to allow more working class families make it in the bay. san jose mayor matt mahan and other leaders pushing for a tenant preference program which would help promote an ordinance to require property units to reserve low income units and prioritize people looking for new housing who already live in a particular area. if approved, it would include an online portal for potential applicants. council members will vote on the ordinance next week. march madness already in full swing, and check your brackets because cinderella seems to be alive and well. bay area teams get under way today. st. mary's team left for spokane

on wednesday. they're taking on grand canyon tonight. madness playing out with oakland leading the way. not our oakland in the east bay, but oakland university from michigan, shocking the world last night as they upset basketball blue bloods kentucky. the final score was 80-76. oakland star player jack golcke was an uber driver last year and scored a game high of 32 points. the stanford women get under way later today, taking on norfolk state at maples pavilion. this is the 25th time stanford is hosting a tournament game and players hope it provides an advantage. >> we're excited to play at home, play in front of our fans, and hopefully have two games this weekend and then move to the rest of the tournament. >> if they win, they take on the winner of iowa state and maryland on sunday mair winter is officially over, but not so much for the sierra, and i say that because a winter storm warning will be in effect
5:40 am
starting at noon today. here is a live look at interstate 80, this is near donner summit. moderate to heavy snow is expected through sunday morning for higher elevations. the national weather service is advising against traveling there. >> the storm always seems to come on some of these weekends where people want to travel there. >> people want to go, but then when you see the conditions, it's like, you know what, don't even risk it. it's going to be really heavy snow at times. but it does start out as rain, because temperatures are a little warmer. that's why the winter storm warning begins later today. it hasn't yet started raining or snowing yet there, but we do have a little bit of window to get there before we see conditions go downhill later today. and so here is a look at the overall winter storm warning in the areas that are highlighted in pink and purple. there's a winter weather advisory, basically a step down from a winter storm warning. it means that there will be lighter snow, but still very difficult travel at times.
5:41 am
and throughout the weekend we're looking at about a foot to possibly two feet of snow. there may be higher elevations to get 3 or more feet of snow this weekend. but then look at next week, even more on the way. so your travel plans may be put on hold for another weekend as well. so we're going to continue to see some very active conditions, temperatures dropping, and we will see the snow continue throughout the weekend as it gets much cooler. maybe you want to just stay around home, and it's going to be raining off and on for the warriors game tonight. they also have the viewings of the march madness in thrive city, so just basketball fun all around. and the holy festival of colors will be happening in fremont. we are going to see some off and on rain and it's going on rain or shine. mike, you're focusing on a couple of spots out there. >> we're looking at the colors here, mostly green. highway 17, the crash is actually north 17, it's affecting only the off-ramp at hamilton and really a minor
5:42 am
effect there. light traffic and a little slowing northbound. that's one of the areas we're watching. typical for 101. the other area i saw, it just started to clear up, eastbound across 92, the san mateo bridge. a live camera showed no problems, but there was slowing on the sensors. that's clearing up. sometimes the computers have to wake up in the morning. south bay slowing for north 101, not a major surprise. now, we just talked about this, over at maples pavilion, the women's ncaa tournament commences with stanford playing tonight. that will be just off highway 82, that's the el camino real. so that is on the campus of stanford and there will be a lot of activity on el camino. watch for more people traveling into the farm, toward the university. over here, another game, another basketball game, the warriors over at chase center. so there may be some more traffic toward the 280 extension, but it's the standard time, standard friday for the east bay. back to you. >> thanks a lot, mike. closing the wage gap. coming up on "today in the bay,"

good friday morning. right now at 5:45, as we take a look at san francisco, we are going to start out cloudy, but we're also going to see that rain coming in during the afternoon. we're going from mid-50s to low 60s, it's going to be a cool day, and the cool weather continues throughout the weekend, with more and more scattered showers coming in as the storm system arrives in the bay area and brings an end to our nice little stretch of some spring-like weather. and we're going to continue to track this. we'll talk about how much rain

to expect throughout the weekend, and looking ahead to next week, that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. this stretch of highway 92, the flat section, taillights away from us, westbound, but the slowing we saw on the sensors, that's eastbound coming toward us. i haven't really seen any major issues, but coming toward us over on the far left, there's a larger box truck that's moving slower. it just takes a few of these vehicles to slow the averages down because there's lighter traffic right now. that may be what happened. we'll track that eastbound 92. no problems reported. a smooth drive across the golden gate bridge. >> thank you very much, mike. there's a new report shedding light on the cost of being a woman in california. >> yeah, mount st. mary's university los angeles just released its annual report on the status of women and girls. now, this year researchers focused on the cost of being a woman, and there are some good things they found.

they found that the wage gap between women and men is actually narrowing. >> that's right. in 2013 women made 84% of what a man makes, but now women make 89%. the gap is much larger for black and latino women. the report found single women with children under 6 are likely to earn an income below that, than that of a married couple, for example. the report is highlighting the gap between college savings for genders. 39% of households are girls have opened a tuition savings plan, compared to 50% for households are boys. these researchers hope the report drives some positive changes as well. let's get a look at our forecast. we've been talking about what a nice spring feeling we've had around the bay area, but now -- >> that's changing. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. >> at least we're prepared, right? we've been talking about it all week long, and then as you get to work people start talking about, you know it's going to

rain this weekend. it's going to be off and on, and it's been such a beautiful week. we will have, at times, some rain and gusty winds, but there will also be breaks, maybe an opportunity to get outside. but not completely clear throughout the weekend. and also we can't be surprised if we hear rumbles of thunder. that will be a possibility over the next couple of days. and then some breaks in the activity for the weekend. going into next week, there will be a break on monday and tuesday, but then more showers come back for the middle of the week. so here is the first storm system that's arriving. we can see it kind of organizing a little bit better, getting its act together as it continues to spin closer to the bay area coastline. as of now, the rain is around eureka and crescent city, and that will eventually make its way closer to the bay area within the next several hours. but we do have a dry start this morning, and we will see rain chances increasing for the evening commute, even a little bit of a clear spot there as we get our friday started.
5:50 am
our hour-by-hour forecast shows that the rain will begin to pick up around ukiah and santa rosa at 2:00 this afternoon. most of the bay area south of the golden gate bridge will have a dry start to the day, and you can get in a lot of your outdoor activities, especially if you're up this early. you're going to have much of your day staying dry. into the evening, we are going to see rain chances picking up as it spreads from north to south, and there will be some pockets of slightly heavier rainfall that will be coming in around 5:00 to 6:00 this evening from the peninsula, as it's starting to approach palo alto, northward into calistoga and ukiah. it just starts to get going around that time for oakland as it makes its way into the east bay. later on this evening, it's going to be raining off and on and that's what we can expect throughout the day tomorrow with scattered showers moving in, and we'll also be tracking that into early next week. so i'll have more on that coming up a little later.
