more rain is coming our way. meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the forecast. a man is dead after an officer involved shooting in the south bay. what police are saying. an east bay mail truck robbed while the carrier was on his daily route, and thieves got away with more than just mail. a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. the news at 5:00 starts right now. thank you for joining us. >> it's happened again. a mail carrier targeted by thieves. this time a letter carrier in fremont had his mail truck broken into while he was out in a neighborhood delivering mail. >> when he got back to the post office where his personal car was parked, he found thieves had stolen that, too. christy smith has the story you'll see only on nbc bay area. >> i was upset and angry at first. >> reporter: that's the reaction of a letter carrier whose shift took an unexpected turn. we're not showing his face, but

he says on thursday he was delivering mail on the last street. when he returned to his parked postal truck, he noticed something was wrong. >> i come up to my work truck, and the driver's side door was wide open. every street i lock it for -- so these types of things don't happen. >> reporter: the truck had been broken into. >> i immediately noticed that all my belongings that i had in there were missing. my phone, my wallet, my car keys, my portable charger, and even some mail that i was like -- people's outgoing mail i was bringing back was taken from the back, as well. they opened the driver door and the middle door that connects to the back of the truck. >> reporter: a neighbor let him use his cell phone to make calls to police. then he head back to the station post office where he had parked his own vehicle before work that

day. and the situation got even worse. >> as soon as i pulled into the parking lot, i looked over and i noticed that my own personal vehicle was missing. you know, they took my car keys from my work truck and took my car from my workplace parking lot. >> reporter: he's a husband and a father, and says he needs his car. now he's dealing with this situation. in recent months, we reported on a number of mail carriers being targeted. this time it was the truck. still, postal inspectors are working with police to investigate. >> the postal vehicles broken into, we're trying to determine what was taken. for breaking into the vehicle and taking u.s. mail, the reward has gone up. the original reward for these kind of vehicle break-ins and taking mail, stealing mail, was $10,000. now it's $100,000. this is nationwide. >> reporter: christy smith, nbc bay area news.

let's take you outside on a chilly sunday evening. this is a live look from our sutro tower camera. we have had a mixed bag of weather, rain, sun, some wind. >> we have more rain coming. meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking what's ahead in the workweek. >> it's across some of the inland mountains, still seeing active weather that's left walnut creek. but san jose, look at the dark clouds east of downtown, as more downpours continue. right now around that 580, 680 corridor. dublin, pleasanton, near stone ridge, you have some downpours. this is a batch of more intense downpours that will cross through the area around 5:13 this evening, and mainly stay along those inland hill tops. again, not a lot of moisture left with the weather system that we have been dealing with this weekend. what's left of these showers,

night. sunnyvale police found the man walking in the middle of the road holding a knife. they told him to drop it and he refused. a police moved towards one of the officers and they opened fire, hitting the man. paramedics took him to the hospital where he later died. the department and the district attorney's office are investigating that shooting. a warning in oakland. three people are recovering from being shot just before 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of 47th avenue and 12th street. paramedics took the victims to the hospital, all expected to be okay. police are asking anyone with information to call them. a man is recovering tonight after big hit by a car in san francisco just before 5:00 last night at a bus stop at fulton street. that is near golden gate park. paramedics took the man to the hospital where is he expected to be okay. the driver was cited for moving

violations. that comes after a deadly crash after a driver hit and killed a family of four. the driver was arrested. the d.a.'s office has not filed charges. firefighters in the peninsula took on a massive building fire last night. this is video from the citizen app. we did mean massive. it started in a large commercial building just after 11:00. it took crews more than four hours to knock it down. no one was hurt, but the building was destroyed. investigators are looking into how that fire started. another large demonstration in support of palestinian people this weekend. organizers call this protest an emergency mobilization against israel's planned invasion of rafah. thousands, as you can see, came out in support of not only an immediate cease-fire, but calling for the end of israel occupation of gaza. joe biden has made it clear that he does not support an invasion of rafah. more than a million displaced

palestinian people are sheltering there. demonstrators say they want to see far more than just an end to the war. >> we have educated a lot of people, not only in the country, but all over the world about each of our respective government's role in funding and facilitate thing ongoing genocide and their profit interests in doing so. >> israel says it must root out hamas, the group behind the october 7th attack that started the war and killed about 1200. rafah is believed to be the last strong hold. a san francisco rally for a woman's reproductive rights. the protest was focused on two supreme court cases that could limit access to an abortion pill. they say women's rights are under attack with the repeal of roe versus wade. on tuesday the supreme court will take up the course, weighing to roll back fda findings to make the abortion pill more available.

also closed recently. the mayor of oakland says the city is working with the county and the state to make the corridor safe again. safety at bay area refineries will be the center of discussion tomorrow. these flaring incidents have prompted concerns by local residents. the meeting will be held at john muir elementary and on zoom at 6:30. this is a live look at the oakland coliseum. the a's open the 2024 season at home against cleveland this thursday. it could be their last season at the coliseum. the team is set to move to las vegas and may play at a different ballpark while the new vegas park is under construction. the a's lease of the coliseum expires after this season. the city and county did meet

about a possible extension of the lease. a spokesperson said it was positive and productive and plan to meet again this week. a's fans are planning a boycott on opening day to protest the move. last year, the reverse boycott at the coliseum, this month they're planning an opening day boycott. okay, take a look at this video of a stunning new phenomenon in the sky, the northern lights. this was taken in northern norway. even more spectacular, this was a view from a kitchen window. can you imagine if that was your view this time of year? incredible. always on my to-do list. >> this is part of an outburst of the sun that might make these lights not so northern tonight. this has been classified as a

geomagnetic storm. so sometimes we're able to see this in the bay area, but will that be the case tonight? you have the earth's magnetic field, an ejection comes away from the sun. the high-energy particles interact with the earth's magnetic field. then you get those greens and those red colors that can show up on the horizon. what's not so good news is that this is starting to weaken, but in the last few hours, we're a bit more optimistic. you might have a chance to see it tonight and the weather would cooperate around 11:00 with partial clearing. we had a similar setup last march and april where some folks in the north bay were able to see the northern lights on the horizon. here's the problem, at times we could be looking at clouds moving through, partly cloudy skies tonight. notice the umbrellas will go away for a little while as we head into monday and tuesday. right now, 57 degrees in san francisco. it's blustery around the way.

58 degrees in walnut creek. northwest wind at 14 and stormy skies east of san jose at 62. northwest wind at 20 miles per hour. let's talk about the wind speeds. we're at the peak of the gusts on the coast. wind speeds should come down tomorrow morning, so the next few hours the strongest of the win we have seen so far today, and tomorrow morning, wind speeds slowly starting to come on down. so you saw the skies east of san jose. you can see the showers bottled up here in the try valley. this will drop south over the next few hours. you can see it right there. it's what is left of these showers along the diablo range moving east of san jose within the next hour or two. as the sun sets, we lose the unstability of the day. monday and tuesday right now, things are looking dry and then we'll see a nice day tomorrow, 40s and 50s to start. patchy low clouds, highs

reaching the low 60s, closer to san jose, upper 50s to about 61 in oakland. tuesday, a little bit warmer. but here comes the first chance of rain right there on wednesday into thursday morning. you see the chances of showers there, and what looks to be a more powerful storm friday into saturday, which once again means another weekend will be dealing with rain chances and sierra snow. so let's take a look at that late-week storm. this has the potential to drop to half an inch of rain around the bay area. as we total up the sierra snow totals approaching the april 1st benchmark, sierra snow pack at 98% of average, but next weekend could see up to two feet of snow komding down. so the pattern is going to stay active. driest days tomorrow and tuesday. some rain at times. notice the rain totals, though.

for former president trump. he could find out the trial date for his criminal hush money case. it's also the deadline to pay his $450 million bond for a separate civil fraud judgment. the hush money trial was originally supposed to start tomorrow. the judge delayed it to mid april after the d.a. approved his request for a delay. we're expecting to get that official start date tomorrow. the former president is set to be in court. that hearing coincides with tomorrow's deadline for mr. trump to pay a more than $450 million bond in his state civil fraud trial. a tense couple of hours for folks on board a carnival cruise ship when an exhaust pipe caught fire. this is a passenger's view of the fire. the ship was heading to the grand bahamas. the captain turned the vessel towards heavy rain in the area to put the flames out. they got it out in about two

hours, and two crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation. carnival says there was no impact to the ship's schedule. changes to a holy tradition today. pope francis skipped reading his homily during this morning's palm sunday mass in st. peters square. the pontiff had been expected to deliver the homily to a crowd of tens of thousands, but after several seconds of silence, announcers said pope francis had decided not deliver the homily itself. the vatican gave no immediate explanation for why the pope skipped the homily. the pope also sat out for the procession of cardinals. hundreds of kids in the south bay celebrated the persian new year at the children's discovery museum of san jose. the celebration of the spring

the countdown is on to the total solar eclipse on april 8th. it is not just stargazers getting ready, so are hotels. hotels in the path of totality are expecting a big boost in business during the april 8th eclipse, the moon's shadow will fly across north america from mexico to new foundland in a little less than two hours. the path of the shadow is called the path of totality, you can see the moon completely cover the sun for up to 4 1/2 minutes. we time lapsed this video from nasa, showing that past. that's a cool video. >> hotels across the path of

totality are already dealing with an influx of reservations. some say they have room for guests, but depending on where you look the night before the eclipse, sold out. prices are higher than usual, some places charging up to ten times what they have listed for the same room a week earlier. one in arkansas, for example, charging $593 for a room that you can get for $52 this weekend. wow. >> wow is right. my gosh. you don't have to wait for the solar eclipse to see something spectacular in the sky. there's an eclipse happening tonight. >> cinthia pimentel explains how and when you can view it tonight. >> the total solar eclipse in april is definitely exciting, but did you know a lunar eclipse is happening tonight? the moon will travel through the faint outer part of the shadow, making the moon look a little unusual and dim for a few hours. from about 10:00 tonight, we'll see the moon rise up in the sky
