another bay area mail carrier targeted, but the thieves didn't just take mail. you'll be surprised to hear what they did get away with. we're seeing clear skies that night, but it won't stay that way for long. rob is tracking the storms coming as we head into the workweek. good evening. another bay area mail carrier targeted by thieves. a letter carrier in fremont had his postal truck broken into while he was out in a neighborhood delivering mail. >> the thieves got away with more than just mail. nbc bay area's christie smith has the exclusive story. >> i was finishing up my shift for the day. last street of my route. >> reporter: this letter carrier says around 4:15 thursday afternoon, he was returning to his postal service truck in fremont when he noticed something was wrong. >> and the driver's side door was wide open, and every street i make sure the door is clockt things don't happen. >> reporter: we're not showing him to protect his identity, but he says a closer look inside the truck revealed more.

>> i immediately noticed that all my belongings that i had in there were missing. my phone, my wallet, my car keys, my airpods, my portable charger, and even some mail that i was, like, people's outgoing mail that i was bringing back was taken. >> reporter: he was able to use a neighbor's cell phone to make calls, including to police. then he drove back to the irvington post office, where he parked his own car earlier in the day. that's when the situation got even worse. >> as soon as i pulled into the parking lot, i looked over, and i noticed that my own personal vehicle was missing, and, you know, they took my car keys from my work truck, and then they took my car from my workplace parking lot. >> reporter: he says his family needs the car. >> i was pretty upset. i was pretty angry at first. >> the fremont police department responded. we're actively working this investigation.

>> reporter: jeff fitch is postal -- >> we're trying to determine exactly what was taken. for breaking into the vehicle and taking u.s. mail, the reward has gone up. the original reward for these kind of vehicle break-ins and taking mail, stealing mail, was $10,000. now it's $100,000. >> reporter: in recent months, we've reported on a number of mail carriers being targeted for their mailbox keys. this time it was just the truck, but this mail carrier is warning his colleagues to be on alert. >> you know, i just want to make sure everyone's being safe and making sure that you're being aware. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. last call for those double-doubles, animal style, anything, at least in oakland. in just a few hours, the city's only in-n-out burger will close for good because of safety concerns. the restaurant has been open in the hegenberger corridor since

2005. recently the area has been hit hard by crime. mayor sheng thao says the city is working with the county and state leaders to make that area safe again. staying in oakland, another violent morning after three people were shot. it happened just before 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of 47th avenue and 12th street. paramedics took the victims to the hospital. they're all expected to be okay. no word on any arrests. people are asking anyone with information to contact them. a man is dead after officers in the south bay say they were forced to open fire. the shooting happened around 5:30 last night at a mobile home park in sunnyvale. the officers found the man walking in the middle of the road holding a knife. they told him to drop it. he refused. that's when police say he moved towards one of the officers. the officers opened fire, hitting the man. paramedics took him to the hospital where he later died. the department and the santa

clara county district attorney's office are investigating the shooting. well, tonight wide life officials confirming a mountain line killed. deputies arrived and found a 21-year-old dead with the mountain lion crouched next to him. they fired their guns to scare off the cat, and it was later captured and killed by wildlife wardens. tonight state wildlife officials say it was confirmed it was the same lion responsible for the attack. officials are still analyzing the cat to determine if it suffered from any underlying health conditions that could have caused it to attack. meanwhile, the second man attacked had several surgeries but is expected to survive. >> switching gears now. a live look outside across the bay area. we've had a mixed bag of weather this first weekend of spring. it started sunny, ended with some rain and wind. let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. rob, how much rain did we end up

getting this weekend? the storm total for san jose, close to an inch of rain. we're probably about to see a little bit more even though we've got clearing skies closer to san francisco. the skies east of san jose as we take you into our stormranger doppler radar, right over the south bay. this is the line of showers we're watching around 5:00, moving out of the sunol grade over around milpitas, heading towards the east foothills. you see the timeline, berryessa, alum rock and evergreen. that is the projection where that storm will move off to the south and east over the next half our. not a lot of moisture left with it. but with the heating of the day, you can see the showers starting to fire up across the north bay hills and the diablo range. once we get to sunset, what's left of those showers will decrease overnight. we'll see a short-term trend to some clearing and then more high louds heading into monday afternoon. a dry break that might last just for a couple of days and then more rain just around the

corner. we're tracking two storm systems in the week ahead. a stronger storm ahead for friday. i'll bring you the timing and the totals for those next storms on the way coming up in our seven-day forecast. another bus stop crash in san francisco. this time a man is recovering after being hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop near golden gate park. it happened just before 5:00 last night. fulton and park presidio boulevard. paramedics took the man to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. the driver was cited for multiple moving violations. the cause of that crash under investigation. that crash comes one eek after a deadly crash at a bus stop in the west portal neighborhood. a driver hit and killed a family of four including a 3-month-old baby and a 1-year-old boy. the driver was arrested but was released from the hospital and custody. the d.a.'s office has not yet filed charges. calls for a cease-fire continued today with another large demonstration in san francisco. organizers called this protest

an emergency mobilization against israel's planned invasion of rafah. thousands came out in support of not only an immediate cease-fire, but they're also calling for the end of israel's occupation of gaza. president biden has made it clear he does not support an invasion of rafah. more than a million displaced palestinian people are now sheltering there. demonstrators say they're encouraged by gains made in awareness, but the long-term plight of palestinian people ever since the creation of israel after world war ii. >> we've educated a lot of people not only in the country but all over the world about each of our respective government's role in funding and facilitating that ongoing genocide and their profit interests in doing so. >> israel says it must root out hamas, the group behind the october 7th attack that started the war. rafah is believed to be its last strong hold. demonstrators rallied outside the federal building in san francisco today as well for women's reproductive rights. the protest was focused on two upcoming supreme court cases

that could limit access to an abortion pill. several states enacting strict abortion bans. this week the supreme court is set to weigh whether to roll back fda findings to make the widely used abortion pill, mifepristone, more readily available. experts warn vaccines, birth control pills, and fertility drugs are at risk with this decision. firefighters on the peninsula taking on a massive building fire last night. this video is from the citizen app. the fire started around 5:00 in a large commercial building. check that, 11:00, large commercial building in brisbane. no one hurt. the building destroyed. the cause of that fire under investigation. still ahead, palm sunday looked a little different at the vatican this year. why the pope skipped out on a big part of the service. and celebrating spring by marking the persian new year. the new tradition at the children's discovery museum.

through the service to a crowd of tens of thousands. but after several seconds of silence, announcers said the pope had decided not to deliver the homily. the vatican gave no immediate explanation for why the pope did not deliver the homily. the pope has been dealing with health issues recent lie and also sat out for the procession of cardinals in st. peter's square though he did continue to preside over the service while sitting near the altar. several california organizations have a major boost to their finances thanks to philanthropist mackenzie scott, the ex-wife of jeff bezos. she is donating $640 million of her fortune to more than 360 groups nationwide. and usually her foundation yields giving reaches out to recipients privately. but this time it held an open call and got thousands of applications that prompted yield giving to more than double what it planned to give. 76 california organizations received donations between $1 million and $2 million each.

tomorrow is a pivotal day for former president trump. he could find out the trial date for his criminal hush money case. it's also the deadline to pay his nearly half billion dollar bond for a separate civil fraud judgment. the hush money trial was originally supposed to start tomorrow. the judge delayed it to mid-april after the d.a. went along with mr. trump's request for a delay. we're expecting to get that official start date tomorrow. the former president is set to be in court. the hearing coincides with tomorrow's deadline for mr. trump to pay a more than $450 million bond in his state civil fraud trial. he has appealed the ruling and says he will challenge it. safety at bay area refineries is going to be the center of a town hall tomorrow. congressman mark desaulnier is set to host it. it's prompted health and environmental concerns from locals. leaders from contra costa health and the chemical safety board will also be attending that meeting. it's going to be held at john

muir elementary. it starts at 6:30. hundreds of kids in the south bay celebrated the persian new year at the children's discovery museum in san jose. the celebration is known as nowruz in more than two dozen countries around the world. after a trial run last year, the museum brought the event back. families were treated to special story time readings, a honey tasting, children performing traditional dances and tables where kids could make their own spring crowns. >> this is a very fun event. it's deeply traditional and meaningful to families who celebrate this holiday and very fun for families who may never have heard of it to wander into the museum and say, what's going on here? what are those crowns all about? >> learn more about it. nowruz is now on the roster of annual events at the museum each year. rob mayeda is here. we've got rain, sunshine, and we've got pollen. >> a lot of pollen.

i got you covered. >> i'll take the whole box, please. >> she's a sneeze machine, folks. >> it's one of the few that still has some tissues in it. >> everything is out around here. >> typically this time of year we see pollen levels come up. but as you're about to see, i think we've reached peak pollen status around the bay area. there you go. help yourself. let's take a look at the top four offenders as we check on gia's allergies. oak, pine, sycamore, and cedar. all four of those in the high range. have not seen that so far to start off spring. add into that the wind, which is shaking it off the trees and blowing it all over the bay area right now. northwest winds at 22 miles per hour. 56 chilly degrees there in san francisco. winds up to 32 around sfo through the san bruno gap. we're at 57 degrees. clearing skies in walnut creek. the rain has passed to the south. west wind at 14. look at those dark skies east of san jose, 60.

winds northwest at 20 miles per hour. this should be the peak of the wind for the weekend. notice how the orange and the yellow start to fade there. the higher wind speeds as we head towards tomorrow morning. still breezy on the marin county coastline. higher wind gusts around half moon bay and the santa cruz mountains should begin to come down moving forward into monday morning. but you saw the dark skies in san jose. rain now dropping from the sunol grade right around 880 and 680. east foothills. alum rock, eventually clipping down towards morgan hill within the hour. that should be about it. as the sun sets, the heating of the day that helped to boost those showers up will start to decrease, and what's left of those rain chances should fade after sunset tonight. brief clearing, but at times tomorrow, we're going to see some high clouds sweeping by. in fact, mostly cloudy skies tomorrow, but those are mostly just high clouds for now. the rain producing clouds returning by around wednesday. so morning temperatures, 40s and low 50s. we'll see temperatures by around

noon, upper 50s to low 60s for highs tomorrow. we'll trend a little bit warmer as we get into tuesday and then the rain chances return wednesday. that's the first of two rain chances, wednesday into early thursday. and the rain totals with this first midweek event don't look all that much. a lot of blue and green, indicating about a third of an inch of rain to a quarter inch of rain around the bay area. but the follow-up storm, the second storm, look at that, friday into saturday. stronger area of low pressure. more moisture involved. so the top rain there likely coming friday afternoon into early saturday morning and kind of like we're seeing this weekend, more showers into saturday and sunday. and this is why that second storm really has our attention. you'll notice here some of the rain totals as we get into the end of next weekend perhaps could be in that half inch to one inch-plus range courtesy of that second storm you're seeing towards the end of that seven-day forecast. so it is officially spring, but this time of year, we'll spring back and forth to winter-like patterns, which does include one

lots of excitement here at nbc bay area. we are counting down to the paris olympics, which are now just four months away. we are excited to see the olympic debut of breakdancing, or breaking. tonight we're getting a look at the judging process for competitive breaking. modesto native b boy crums is an experienced breaker and judge. he's an original member of style elements breaking crew. he spoke to our digital journalist jonathan bloom to break down how judging works. ♪♪ >> in mma, in boxing, they have judges but sometimes they don't even need the judges because somebody gets knocked out. we don't have that. it's always going to go to the
