1:17 am
in this month of march, and then april it should jump up, we're anticipating, to 900 kittens. >> reporter: to make room, the shelter is relying on rescue groups and foster families to care for the kitties. but more foster families are needed. the shelter is also finding people who find healthy kittens in their neighborhood to let them stay with their mom or bring in both the kitties and their mom. >> they're coming in on their own, the kittens' best chance of survival is if we have mom to care for them. and unfortunately, if the kittens are separated from their mom and mom has lost her kittens, odds are she's going to go into heat fairly quick and have another litter. >> reporter: the animal care center is also working to find homes for more than 40 rabbits. but with easter coming up next weekend, shelter leaders discourage people from getting a bunny as a holiday gift. >> you really need to do your research to know what is their
1:18 am
life-span, what is the care that's going to be required. >> reporter: she says bunnies can make great pets in the right home, but families need to be willing to make a commitment to their care, otherwise -- >> if you're getting a bunny just for easter, it should be the chocolate kind. >> reporter: in san jose, marianne favro. firefighters got a call about an injured hiker stuck on mission peak trail. but the rain this weekend muddied the trail, making it hard for rescuers to get to her. they used a drone to find the hiker and did this, sent the gps coordinates to the chopper crew to lift her off the trail and into an ambulance. the hiker is expected to be okay. >> good news there. a heads up for drivers in contra costa county. cal trans is shutting down two lanes of interstate 580.

1:43 am
we are counting down to the paris olympics, which are just four months away. and we're all excited to see the olympic debut of break cansing. we spoke with an original member of the breaking crew. he spoke to jonathan blum to break down how judging works. >> it's like you have to have eyes here and here at the same time. and, like, it's crazy. >> worldwide, baby. >> reporter: how does the judging of dance battle evolve to what it is today? >> before, it was just pointing left or right. it sounds like super basic, but, if you're a good judge, it's more than just left and right.
1:44 am
in your head, you're scoring round for round. it can be really tough to judge if you're not a great breaker yourself. there's differences in opinion for sure. but, at the end of the day, you're never going to kill the subjectiveness in breaking. in mma, in boxing, they have judges, but sometimes they don't even need the judges because somebody gets knocked out. we don't have that. it's always going to go to the judges. always. that's why we call it the hot seat. now it's broken down into categories. when i judge for olympic qualifiers, we have an ipad with five categories. technique, vocabulary, and execution included. we have an element where we score in each category. if i see this person is really
1:45 am
killing the music right now, i'm messing with the music bar. >> so you're adjusting your score during the round. so those leaders land in the position that they're going to be recorded in, basically? it's about the final position that matters? >> yeah. and when you're ready to submit, on to the next round. it's quick. people are moving fast. it's not like boxing. they get a minute to rest. that doesn't happen. as soon as a round's over. boom, the guy's already going back in or the girl's already going back in. you have to know your score before that second round really starts. and then you have to watch. you can't just be like down on your ipad, because then you're going to miss something. there's different strikes. level one, two, three. it can be very detailed and another thing for the judges to look at. all the general public sees is who won the round or not. looking at a battle is enough
1:46 am
information already. you have usually a red side and blue side. the blue box will pop up for the blue side if the blue side won that round or the red. a lot of times the general public, they'll boo some decisions because they think what's good is just the spins. they're not paying attention to the other categories like creativity, musicality. >> what do each one of those things really mean in practice? >> vocabulary is variety. footwork, power moves, do you have freezes? do you have stacking, leaps, back rocks. there's all these elements in breaking that we're look for. so many, because breaking is always evolving. we're open, and we're free to
1:47 am
create and to add on. variety is all of that. technique is athleticism. it's body control. it's in the same family as execution. but then there's more to execution also. how you perform the move. if you crash, did you mess up, did you fall? originality is creativity, who are you? right? we should be able to go behind a backdrop and dance and people say oh, that's crumbs, they'll know right away, because i have my own style. so creativity, originality is huge. being spontaneous, not knowing what the next move is, but it just happens with the flow. and with the music, which leads into musicality. all of these things are interwoven and connected. and once you get to the highest levels in breaking you see that in one individual. they'll be able to take all those elements and connect them in a unique way.
1:48 am
>> whoa, terry, did i just see you in there? >> yeah, yeah. you got a glimpse of me. i'll be there. >> b-boy mcsweeney. speaking of competition, this race not as fast as some others, but it's certainly interesting. you can probably relate to it more. hundreds of cafe waitresses and waiters gathered in the streets of paris for the cafe waiters race. it's been around for 110 years. it's back. participants raced more than a mile all while carrying trays with a croissant, coffee cup and glass of water. the winners got tickets to the opening ceremony of the paris olympics. >> that's nice. everyone gets measured water, like you can't spill? or -- looks like he spilled. >> i was looking at the coffee
1:49 am
cup on the last one. i didn't see any coffee swaying. maybe it was only half filled. >> there's the winner right there. congrats to him. rob is here right now. you know we keep talking about all this weather that we're having, during the week it's sunny, and the weekend it's rainy, like what's going on? >> that is not changing. dry weather monday and tuesday. then two storm systems we'll be watching as we head to the later part of the week. and we've just wrapped up a cool finish to the weekend. today's highs below the averages and pretty close to where tomorrow's temperatures will be. more upper 50s around san francisco and low to mid-60s from the north bay valleys into san jose. northwest wind at 14 miles per hour as cooler air came in today. the wind probably did make it feel extra chilly at times. 52 degrees in walnut creek.
1:50 am
but a blanket of low clouds has set up over san jose at 55 degrees. still pretty gusty along the coast. these should slowly start to come down as we head into monday morning with patchy areas of low clouds. maybe patchy fog in a few spots. that's probably the only top concern. no showers in the forecast tomorrow. filtered sunshine heading into the afternoon. high clouds will be back on the increase later in the day. there's a look at those upper 50s around san francisco, and low 60s for concord. a high close to 60 in san jose. there's a look at the low clouds mostly focussed around the south bay. maybe misty skies. there come the high clouds, should set up for a pretty sunset view. wednesday, that's the first chance of rain right now. and rain totals with this midweek weather system, the
1:51 am
trend has been pretty consistent that we're going to be looking at a quarter inch to third of an inch of rain, and maybe about a tenth closer to san jose. it's a weather system that rolls in later in the week. you can see it here. there's your area of low pressure, stronger system which will probably have wind attahed too. main event looks like friday into saturday. and the cold air aloft you can pick out on the map, the blue color on the map. by sunday the showers will start to drop more towards southern california. but the rain totals with the rain system that arrives look more significant. the map in these shades of yellow and red around the bay area. two-day rain totals later in the week could be close to a half inch to maybe more than an inch
1:52 am
of rain for the santa cruz mountains. there's a look at your seven-day forecast. patchy low clouds tomorrow morning. rain wednesday. a few early morning showers thursday. but i think the stormiest part of the week is going to be right there on that friday afternoon into saturday morning. and then a few showers lingering into sunday. so we're going to finish the month with storms rolling in on weekends. stay tuned as we officially move into april. >> right on cue, those storms. another new movie ruling the box office. what came out on top, and why another horror movie is raising some eyebrows. interest story here. next.
