new developments on bridge collapse in baltimore. federal authorities recover the ship's voyage recorder data, as the bodies of two victims are pulled from the water. we bring you the latest.

"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin with the latest developments in baltimore. the remains of two construction workers have been found after the shocking collapse of the francis scott key bridge. as the search continues for the other four missing men, we are learning more about the victims

of this tragedy. nbc's tom llamas kicks off our coverage. >> reporter: what took seconds to come crashing down now likely to take weeks to investigate. the key bridge collapse, still too dangerous in many parts for divers to even enter the water. debris, sunken cars, containers and chunks of bridge littering the river floor. we traveled to what's left of the francis scott key bridge. we're just outside the perimeter of the disaster zone, about a quarter mile of where the collapse happened. and at sea level, the first thing you realize is the monstrous size of that cargo vessel. it is so much more massive than the structure of the actual bridge. officials say the "dali" is stable. that it has more than 1.5 million-gallons of fuel and 56 containers of hazardous material. but the coast guard saying it is not a danger. >> the crew is cooperating with what we need. they remain on board. >> reporter: but outside the

ship, investigators hitting a snag. the search and recovery efforts have been hampered by the weather here in baltimore. there's been a steady rain all day today. patchy fog and temperatures in the 40s, but in the water it's even worse. >> divers won't be able to see anything. they're going to work by hands. >> reporter: he leads the search and evidence response team. they're using sonar and remote-operated vehicles. rovs, to scan these waters. how bad is it? >> some of the debris is still shifting. a lot of chunks of debris, rocks. we're searching for vehicles. so you're looking for the shape of a vehicle. >> reporter: some of the missing construction workers were inside their cars at the time of the collapse. you can actually see their vehicles' lights brinking on the bridge before the impact. >> it's going to be very, very difficult, i think. >> reporter: jeffrey pritzker is an executive with that

construction company. he says the entire company is in mourning and still in shock. did the message get to your employees that the ship was going to crash into the bridge? do you know if they realized that? >> i don't know. i wasn't there. i can only tell you they were right in the middle span of that brin. right in the center of the middle of the span. i doubt if they heard anything or knew it was going to happen. >> reporter: you're saying they may have been caught completely by surprise? >> they may have been. >> reporter: he says one member of their crew miraculously survived and is still unable to speak about what happened. among those missing, miguel luna, a father of six from el salvador. there he is at a gender reveal party for his grandchild just this month. and maynor sandoval. his brother emotional, saying it's not easy seeing the bridge now, knowing that monster of iron is trapping my brother. >> our thanks to tom for that report.

in illinois, four people were killed and five others wounded in a rampage in and around the town of rockford. most, but not all, of the victims were stabbed in the attack beginning around 1:00 p.m. local time. the mayor called it a random and senseless act of violence. the dead have not been identified, but we know a 15-year-old girl is among them. one of the wounded is in critical condition. the other four are stable. authorities say they've arrested a 22-year-old man and a motive is under investigation. turning to virginia, where two women were shot at a day care center in springfield after a gunman fired through the door. police say the man tried to speak with one of the women, who he had a relationship with, but she refused to let him in. both victims were rushed to the hospital with what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. more than 70 children were inside the building. luckily, none of them were hurt. after an hours-long manhunt, a suspect was arrested.

turning to the middle east where a lebanon official says eight people were killed in israeli airstrikes in lebanon. they confirm responding. the strikes killed three of their fighters, hezbollah says. why are hezbollah and israel shooting at each other? >> reporter: good morning, frances. at least according to israel and israeli communities living close to the border with lebanon are still on a high alert this morning, as they said that sirens were still sounding warning of incoming rocket fire. now the latest exchange of fire between hezbollah and israel started on tuesday when israeli jet fighters, as you mentioned, struck a building killing at least eight people. the idf says that building was housing members of a militant group that was planning a terror attack against israeli targets. now then hezbollah retaliated with a barrage of rockets fired

into the north of israel that killed at least one man. now this was only the latest in a long series of scuffles between hezbollah and israel, especially since the start of the war in gaza. but the concern here is that this escalation could lead into a full, the first full-blown war between hezbollah and israel since 2006 when at least 1200 help niece civilians died. and this escalation comes just as at least according to latest polls, the support by americans for the war has just sunk dramatically. if you look at it according to the latest gallup poll, only36% of americans in march were supporting the war or approving of the war. that's compared to 50% four months ago. and 55% of americans are now disapproving, compared to 45 back in november 2023. back to you, frances.
