6:02 am
this weekend we will have rain chances coming back as a new storm system arrives, and then go into the weekend a chance of thunderstorms on easter, an afternoon chance of rain. a heads up as you make plans for egg hunts, there will still be a chance of showers coming in. we are looking at a drier day today, at least for the start, and then tomorrow as we open up the view, there's still a storm system that will draw in rain. our temperatures are in the upper 50s to low 60s today. we are keeping jackets on, even into the afternoon. heading over to mike, you are still continuing with the alert in the south bay? >> yes. we had one deadly crash that kicked off all of this in the south bay. i just saw flashing lights travel northbound past our camera, and our camera is here, 101, and the deadly crash is over at oakland road. this crash happened just after

6:04 am
has seen more applications than in recent years, and this can be a bright spot as the district becomes more open about difficult decisions that lie ahead. within the month, the district has said there are more schools than students, so the consolidating or closing schools is not just a possibility but it is poised to happen at this point. how many and which schools, that has yet to be determined. i am told it will take some time before those decisions are made. we know this morning applications to fsusd schools went up this past placement season, and that coincides with the change. and the potential for the growing student body is there. >> we see an increase of about 300 applications of pk students every year, and what that means is that every year we need to make 300 more seats until we are
6:05 am
opening pk at more and more schools every year. >> reporter: there are currently over 130 schools within fsusd, and almost 50,000 students. can you see the breakdown on your screen now. that is for the 2023-2024 school year. enrollment numbers has been down in recent years, and they are also impacted by low number of san francisco families with young children. the city's declining birthrate and the steady enrollment at private schools. the district is facing major challenges including an over $400 million deficit, and replacing an inefficient payroll system and reforming their school placement from lottery to zoning. speaking of those decisions, families are in the middle of finding out which schools they are placed for, and they have until april 5th to make their decisions, and as far as those closing or consolidating

breached. >> local authorities are aware of that, and they will be in charge of addressing those issues. >> this incident is expected to have a significant impact on the supply chain. >> the national economy and the world's economy depends on the port of baltimore. the port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country. >> president biden is working with the coast guard and the u.s. transportation secretary on response efforts. >> the president and the whole government will be here with you until everything is rebuilt stronger than ever. >> the biden administration pledges to help baltimore for as long as it takes. transportation secretary, pete buttigieg says rebuilding the francis scott key bridge in baltimore will not be quick, easy or cheap. it's estimated it could cost at least $2 billion to replace, marcus. >> that is an important strip to

6:21 am
>> absolutely. but we will unfortunately have to deal with rain off and on, and on saturday bring your own basket and it will happen at 9:30 on saturday morning in belmont. check your city, there's probably a local event going on as well. we have been dealing with the rain over the past 12 to 16 hours, and we are still seeing lingering activity. the storm system further to the north will bring us a chance of rain. there's another one developing that will be rolling into the bay area tomorrow, keeping it unsettled. if you are wondering how much rain did you measure yesterday, we had for most of us 0.1 to quarter inch of rainfall, and a little more for oakland and fremont. san josé had 0.1 of rain, and the highest was in mount tam, an inch and three quarters there.
6:22 am
woodacre had 1.3. it was a very spotty hit or miss, and there will be a slight chance of a lingering shower today. there will be times of rain in the forecast from friday into saturday, and even gusty winds and a chance of rain. there could be up to two feet of snow possible over the weekend in the sierra as the chilly temperatures continue. it's still going to feel very much like winter as we are celebrating a spring holiday, and next week, maybe your kids have spring break, it will be in the low 70s and sunny. absolutely beautiful. make plans to get outside. it will be in the mid-60s in san francisco. mike, how are the southbound travel times looking? >> better, and 85 is great, and

payoff issue, and to date that has not proven to be the case. >> reporter: in the past, the a's have opened up the parking lot here four to six hours before the home opener to let the long line of fans in to tailgate, and yesterday the team released a statement that they will not open the parking lot gates tonight until two hours until game time, and that's a little after 5:00. it's not clear if this is in response to tonight's planned boycott, but it could cause serious traffic if the lines are cars back up on 880, and there's a concert next door at the oakland arena, and something to keep in mind if you are coming to the coliseum. with regards to the a's move to las vegas, next tuesday the tropicana hotel, which has been a sin city landmark on the strip, will shutdown and be demolished for the a's new

>> yeah, and i think you can guess which theory belongs to the prosecution and which belongs to the defense. the defense says he was a kid that mismanaged money and he was also a victim of the collapse, and they are using his autism as a defense. prosecutors want 50 years, and the defense is asking for 6 1/2. the thing that doesn't help him, he took the stand in his own defense during his trial and it was a disaster. the judge said he showed little if any remorse, which is why his attorneys are trying to differentiate their client from others, and bernie madoff died

rainfall totals for the bay area anywhere from about an inch to an inch and a half, these areas in red in parts of the north bay along the coastline could see slightly higher rainfall totals compared to everywhere else, and windy with a chance of thunderstorms on saturday. on sunday, on easter, it looks like we wake up to dry conditions, and then rain chances increase once again for the evening. warmer temperatures surging in for next week with sunshine and in the low 70s inland, and san francisco will be seeing highs in the mid-60s. mike, we have the wet roadways? >> yeah, these folks won the lottery -- no. we have damp roadways, and no major problems, and it's a thursday drive so the usually suspects, concord and richmond,
