we have so many changes coming in. and here is the system that's arriving right now, quite a few lightning strikes farther to the north. we'll be tracking it all with stormranger as the storm system continues to near the bay area, as it brings very unsettled and cold weather. mike, you were tracking one trouble spot. >> most of the bay shows green sensors. i should show you the peninsula as well. all green right now. great lighter traffic, good friday, so some folks not reporting for work because they have others to report to on good friday. we're looking toward the hazard, the one slow spot. i updated chp's report, they are still requesting the sweeper for nails. 7 inches long nails scattered across the roadway and there are a number of vehicles on the shoulder. once you pass by north flynn, everything is clear. a little build for vasco and clear at dublin interchange, no problems for contra costa county. developing in san francisco, a deadly shooting just outside

the powell street b.a.r.t. station is under investigation. it happened last night around 9:30 in hallidie plaza. first responders found one victim with a gunshot wound who died at the scene, and at least two people are detained in connection with the shooting. but so far, we don't know what the motive might be. as soon as we get more information, we'll bring you those updates. and happening today, a man accused of a deadly father's day shooting in richmond is due back in court. this was from back in june of 2021 when police say ramirez and another gang member opened fire at a group house party. three people were killed, five others were injured. as we approach april and national infertility week, we are learning about how taxing the journey to parenthood can be for some families. >> one east bay couple decided to take their fertility journey overseas. "today in the bay"'s ginger

conejero saab is live for us in san francisco this morning. a great ending here, ginger, because those parents say everything was totally worth it. >> reporter: totally worth it, marcus and kris. you know, for a lot of parents, infertility is a struggle. the world health organization says one out of six adults experience it. that's 17%, over 17% of the adult population. and the journey can be tough to navigate, as well as very costly, especially here in the bay area, which is why one couple decided to take a leap of faith and find their fertility journey overseas. being a mom was something she always envisioned, until it came time to try. >> she saw something in the ultrasound she wasn't expecting to see, and that was some sort of mass that was inside my uterus. >> reporter: fortunately, the mass was benign, but it did mean that jannah's vision of how she would become a mom would change.

>> i just cried and wept because i was bracing myself for the journey that i was about to embark on and what it meant. >> reporter: it meant at least three cycles of in vitro fertilization, which costs around $35,000 a cycle, quickly adding up to over $100,000 for her and her husband, for just a 25% chance of success. >> it's huge. it's unbelievable, the undertaking. >> i remember eli asking me, what are you willing to risk to get there, to take this chance to try to have our kid? and i just told him, i'm willing to risk all of it, like i was willing to sell our house and just try. >> reporter: that's when the couple went to work. they researched, found online support groups, and found an answer overseas at a fraction of the price. dr. skinner is one of jannah's doctors at barbados fertility clinic.

>> going to a foreign country that we frankly didn't know a lot about and medical standards that we were, you know, ignorant of, it was definitely a gamble. >> an independent health care accreditation body comes in as a reassurance, that we go through the same rigorous process of safety and checks that a u.s. hospital goes through. >> i just held on to the idea to stay calm, that maybe my family was going to form, no matter what. >> reporter: and that it did. jannah and eli learned the news they waited over a year to hear, they were going to be parents. >> we got four eggs and he was the egg that made it with a fresh transfer, against all odds. >> reporter: they have named their 2 1/2 year old son lev, meaning lionheart in russian. his middle name, ocean, is a nod to barbados, a place where their family became complete.

south to birth and now they're returning to the coast of california for spring, meaning whales are now at risk of getting tangled up in the traps used by fishermen to catch crab. the state department of fish and wildlife announced the season will end april 8th. it's time to check out your friday forecast. it's going to be windy, as well as some rain coming in. >> a wind advisory will be in effect starting at 11:00 today, mainly for the coast and hills. meteorologist kari hall, how much wind does it take to blow things away? >> as the storm moves in, it will pack a windy punch. let's talk about the impacts we'll see. it doesn't take much for a maple leaf to blow, just 3 miles per hour. you'll want to secure loose items around your home like your trash can. even at 37 pounds, it takes a 28-mile-per-hour gust to knock it over. and those kinds of winds will be

go, it is a chilly start. you'll want to make sure you have the umbrella. we're going to have temperatures starting in the low 50s and headed to the mid-50s. it's going to be a chilly day. we're only up to 55 in napa and santa rosa, san francisco 57, 59 in san jose, and we'll see a high of 55 in morgan hill. it only gets slightly better tomorrow as we get a few more breaks in the activity, but still there will be the chance of more rain and possibly some thunderstorms. all eyes on easter sunday, as it makes it up to 64 in fremont. we'll see a high of 62 in novato and in san francisco. but the rain is already here. it is starting out light, but it's starting to pick up in parts of the north bay. marin county seeing pockets of heavier rain moving in. i've seen some lightning strikes off the coast, but we haven't seen it make it inland. that will be the possibility today. so take a look at those icons that are popping up, those are live cloud-to-ground lightning

strikes our radar is able to detect. and once again, so far it hasn't yet made it over to the coastline, but we will be watching out for that chance. and then the activity picking up, becoming more widespread. look at 3:30 this afternoon. i mean, it could really get going over parts of the east bay, the south bay, heavy rain, gusty winds, and some times of lightning. that will also be the chance we'll see for tomorrow as well. in total, we're looking at about anywhere from three-quarters of an inch of rainfall in the tri-valley to possibly over two inches of rainfall for the north bay, so we could possibly have some big impacts. minor flooding a possibility, but the sierra will see about 1 to 2 feet of snow. for easter, the rain chances will continue. it may be just an isolated shower, but then after that it's going to be drying out and warming up next week. it looks spectacular for spring break. any kids off next week will have

by the time you pass north flynn, everything is clear. in the south bay, this is an indication of how light the traffic is. no slowing in san martin or morgan hill, 101 clear through san jose. breaking news just into our newsroom right now. award winning actor louis gossett jr. has died, the first black man to win a supporting actor oscar, while also winning an emmy for his role in the groundbreaking tv mini series "roots" and his nephew confirming the news the actor died last night in santa monica. no cause of death has been revealed. he was 87 years old. so many memorable roles. also breaking this morning, a major announcement from governor gavin newsom. he says that there will be hundreds of new high-tech cameras installed along oakland streets and freeways. >> part of a broad strategy, not just a law enforcement only

strategy. [ inaudible ] >> so the governor is saying in total there will be 480 new cameras, 290 of those will be on surface streets. the other 190 will be on state highways through the east bay. the governor says that these will help police officers identify cars linked to crimes, and says that this push is building on those efforts made by the state just a few weeks ago by increasing the number of chp officers in the area. this announcement is coming as brand new shocking video is being released. if you look at your screen here, you'll see video from just before 3:00 wednesday afternoon on 880 in union city. someone was driving a truck when a green sedan pulls up, the driver of the sedan shoots through the window of the truck. chp hayward says it happened after some sort of road rage incident. the truck driver had minor injuries. the chp was able to arrest that suspect yesterday. and developing in san francisco, a deadly shooting

outside the powell street b.a.r.t. station is now under investigation. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is joining us live this morning. so what do we know about this? >> reporter: well, we don't know much, marcus and kris. the shooting unfolded last night at 9:30 at hallidie plaza right outside one of the powell street b.a.r.t. exits in the city. first responders came on scene and found one person with a gunshot wound. that person was pronounced dead at the scene. two people have been detained. now, the area where this all happened is in the heart of downtown san francisco, what used to be westfield shopping center, to give you an idea, is just across the street. the cable car turnaround on powell is also just feet away, very close to this area. we have reached out to san francisco police for more details, and are still waiting to hear back. as soon as that comes in, we'll make that thank you on air or online at nbcbayarea.com.

>> thank you for that update. new this morning, a former caltrain employee, along with a former contractor for the transit agency, are accused of building secret homes with public funds inside two train stations. prosecutors say former employee joseph navarro conspired with a contractor, seth warden, to build two small apartments. warden's living quarters were allegedly inside the millbrae station and were discovered in 2020. however, prosecutors say that navarro's converted space was at the burlingame train station, and in 2022 it was discovered after caltrain received an anonymous tip. both men are accused of approving $42,000 in building expenses for those secret projects. both are due in court next month. four of oakland's biggest employers are announcing a multimillion dollar effort, the latest attempt to boost safety

in the city. the group includes blue shield of california, the clorox company, kaiser permanent and pg&e. they're chipping in $10 million in an effort to strengthen a city ambassador program and on-demand buddy escorts, which will help people get to destinations safely. the money will also help fund greater police visibility and employee safety, training and transportation. to a live look outside i-80 in soda springs. it looks super chilly. the rain is arriving here in the bay area, but up north there will be snow. you see that video. it is supposed to really start coming down this afternoon. now, the chp is warning that if you are headed there, you might need chains. let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. it looks like it's pretty clear right now, soda springs, kari. >> yeah, i would just bring the tire chains, basically any time during the winter and spring, right? so you want to make sure you

have them before you go. but we will have a winter storm warning going up at 11:00 this morning, and we are going to expect some very heavy snowfall, which may delay travel as we go throughout the entire weekend. we are looking at the snowfall totals anywhere from 8 to 18 inches, up to 30 inches of snow for the ridges. so it's going to be beautiful to watch. but it's also going to be windy, with that blowing snow. it may reduce visibility. you do have a window to get there now, but it's going to be closing very quickly, as that storm system continues to move in. and then we are looking at basically the kind of conditions you want to just hunker down, and then wait until monday or sometime next week before you come back. you may want to stay closer to home to enjoy some of the things going on, including treasure fest on treasure island. it starts cloudy with light showers, but then as we go throughout the day, the storm chances increase. so the later in the day we get,

tax evasion. in fact, she says it was a poll worker who suggested she fill out the provisional ballot, which was never counted. now, she was out of jail, but texas law requires you to complete all punishment before you can vote. mason at the time was still on supervised release. a kansas city man is suing a u.s. congressman for incorrectly identifying him on social media as the super bowl parade shooter. denton laudermill definitely was not the shooter. he was a chiefs fan which he was detained by police. tennessee congressman tim burchett tweeted that he was the shooter and was, in fact, an illegal alien, the congressman's words. that's also not true. >> spread the word that i am not the guy that he said i was, like he did, spread my name, he said i was the shooter and an illegal alien. >> congressman burchett has not responded to the lawsuit or

tribute for vietnam war veterans day, which is today. the ship sailed in yesterday. it is the first u.s. navy ship to be named after an openly gay person. the late supervisor served in the navy during the korean war but was discharged after being questioned about his sexuality. they will honor veterans with a pin thanking them for their service. the event is not open to the public, but the ship can be seen, you can look at it from pier 30 or 32 from the embarcadero. a huge game for bay area women's soccer and sports fans this weekend, as bay fc celebrates their home opener before a sold-out crowd at san jose's paypal park. >> that's got to feel good to already have a sold-out crowd. being built. thom, i can tell you the excitement there for the women's team, hey, it is top level right now. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, huge amount of excitement around this game and around this team. yeah, their home stadium, they're still looking for a site and it will be built. for the foreseeable future, this is their home stadium, shared by the san jose earthquakes and the msl team, and they are playing a home opener, like you said, to a packed crowd, sold-out stadium, 18,000 fans here and just a ton of excitement around the game. there's a lot of tradition, of course, of women's soccer in the bay area, at the college level, with the women's national team at the world cup and olympic level, and now this professional team, where the athletes can continue playing at the professional level.

the teams train and play here in san jose and most of them live here. yesterday they awarded the city's mayor with a team jacket in celebration of the team and the home opener. the team's ceo says bay fc promises to put on a show that fans won't forget saturday night when they take on the houston dash. >> and we know that we represent fans from across all nine counties of the bay area, and we are so proud to be your bay area team. >> reporter: and earlier this week, they celebrated the team with mayor london breed in san francisco. by the way, there are traffic advisories, so if you're coming, come early, go by b.a.r.t. or caltrain, or there's a partnership with lyft. also, if you're looking to meet the foreign national team legends who founded the team, they're going to be with the big ball at santana row, blue bottle coffee, later this morning at 8:30. so more excitement for the game

so sometimes when you first get the storm system coming in, some of our valleys don't yet see the rain, the rain evaporates before hitting the ground. we're definitely seeing it in the north bay and we're starting to see more activity on the peninsula. and even some lightning strikes have been occurring off the coast, but we haven't yet seen any of that make it inland. that will be a possibility as the center of the storm gets closer and the rain picks up in intensity later this morning, with some off and on rain that will continue as we go throughout the weekend. so here is what to expect, a stronger storm coming in with gusty winds, a chance of thunderstorms. minor flooding possible. the sierra is going to see some heavy snow. easter weekend rain chances will stay into the day, but then next week we are clearing out and warming up with temperatures in the 70s and cool and soggy weather in san francisco, but looking much better next week. mike, you were looking at what might be ahead. >> very light traffic. most folks will see little slowing, just a little in san jose.

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories, including some breaking news. >> some sad bus. award winning actor louis gassett jr. passed away. you see him in one of his star roles. he was the first black man to win a supporting actor oscar and also won an emmy for "roots" and his nephew confirmed the news he died last night in santa monica, though did not release a cause of death. he was 87 years old.

also breaking, a major announcement from governor gavin newsom. he says there will be 480 new high-tech cameras installed along oakland streets and freeways, 290 of those cameras will be on surface streets, 190 of them will be on state highways through the east bay. the governor says that these will help police officers identify cars linked to crimes, and says the push is building on efforts the state made just a few weeks ago by increasing the number of chp officers in that area. a shocking video shows a freeway shooting just about 3:00 wednesday afternoon on 880 in union city. someone was driving a truck when a green sedan pulled up and the driver of the sedan shot through the window of the truck, shattering the glass. chp hayward says it happened after some sort of road rage incident. the truck driver did have minor injuries. the chp was able to arrest the suspect yesterday. in san francisco, a deadly shooting outside the powell

street b.a.r.t. station is under investigation. this happened last night around 9:30 in the hallidie plaza. first responders found one victim with a gunshot wound who died at the scene. at least two people were detained in connection with the shooting. so far, a motive has not been released. despite a rough game for the oakland a's, new announcer jenny cavnar made history at the coliseum after the a's home opener. she took off her headset and sent that item and others to the major league baseball hall of fame. she is the first woman primary by-by-play announcer in major league baseball history. the team did lose 8-0 to the cleveland guardians, but she'll remember and we'll celebrate that. and we're talking about the weather. >> we're going to have rain coming in. you can track it with the nbc
