good morning. thanks for waking up with us as we start the weekend ahead of the easter holiday. the rush is on. >> between easter and spring breaks, highways are jammed. it's march 30th. this is "today." hop to it. tens of millions of americans hop to it. tens of millions of americans hitting the roads and taking to the skies this weekend. the west dealing with heavy rain while the south gets ready for a

warm-up. angie is tracking it awful. breaking overnight, scare in the air. an international united airlines flight is hit by high winds and severe turbulence on its way to newark. the plane diverted to a nearby airport with some passengers rushed to the hospital. we're live with the latest. papal health concerns. pope francis skipping good friday services to prepare for easter. what the vatican is saying about his condition. massive cleanup. a new piece of heavy equipment now on site in baltimore to help salvage operations get underway. what investigators are saying about the timeline to safely remove the wreckage of the collapsed key bridge. all of that, plus it is madness. the elite eight of the men's ncaa tournament is now set after 11-seed north carolina state took down two-seed marquette. >> the bounce is too deep. slips it down. >> and duke knocks down top-seed

houston. now it is the women's turn to try to advance, including super star caitlin clark and her iowa hawkeyes. today, saturday, march 30th, 2024. ♪ ♪ from nbc news, this is "today" with peter alexander and laura jarrett. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today" and thanks so much for joining us on this fine saturday morning. so my team is out. wildcats are out. all i'm going to do is root for caitlin clark. i have no choice. >> i think most of america will be watching caitlin clark. today they are playing the colorado buffaloes, the one thing, the achievement that has evaded caitlin clark, the biggest scorer in college basketball history, a national championship. she needs another win to keep the march going. we will have more on that in a moment. hopefully you are settled in for your easter holiday weekend. if not, we have you all set this morning. the latest on travel to get there and, most importantly, for

tens of millions enjoying spring break we will break down the holiday weekend forecast. it will be another beautiful one across much of the country. >> that is some good news. we will get angie's forecast in a moment. let's begin with a look at the holiday travel rush. millions have taken off ahead of the holiday and spring break, but there was a scare for hundreds of passengers on a flight bound for newark last night when severe turbulence forced the plane to land at a different airport. george solis is there for us. what can you tell us? >> reporter: certainly dramatic moments after the united airlines flight was forced to divert to a new york airport before landing in newark. it was carrying about 300 passengers. according to officials it was heading from tel aviv to newark. one person had to deplane as a result of a medical emergency, seven others taken to a hospital strictly out of an abundance of caution. amazingly, there were no serious injuries. certainly as the level of complexity as we approach this

busy travel holiday period, get this, according to the faa this past thursday there were some 50,000 flights in the air as we approach the peak travel period there will be about 50,000 more this upcoming thursday. now, flying is not your speed, those driving might feel it a little bit more this year. according to aaa, gas on average about 10 cents more expensive than it was this time last year. still going to be a bargain compared to what our friends are paying out west at those $4 and $5 prices a gallon, laura. >> george, in addition to spring break there will be millions on the road trying to catch a look at the great north american eclipse next week. what are you looking for there? >> reporter: yeah, laura. officials are saying it is certainly going to fuel a travel surge. according to travel site hopper, those people trying to get the peak hotels in the really prime viewing areas may see a surge, about 550% increase in rates. get this. this is interesting according to the faa, some people may actually have to brace for

travel delays because they estimate some aircraft and drones trying to get the best shots of the eclipse may lead to delays and interruptions. if you ask me, it might be better to watch it from the comfort of your home or why not right here on "today." laura. >> thanks for the plug, george. appreciate it. so how is the weather going to be across the country for those of you this easter? nbc meteorologist angie lassman is here with the latest on that. angie, good morning. what is it looking like for folks? >> good morning. guys, good morning to you. our saturday is bumpy. we have a couple of trouble spots that linger into sunday for some of the easter plans. let's start with what we're dealing with right now. we have two storm systems, first in places like chicago where you are waking up to rumble and heavy rain. it will be a quick mover. we will move to parts of the atlantic and the northeast as we get through the day today and tomorrow. meanwhile, out west a couple of days of soggy conditions. this is the heavy rain we will be watching specifically across portions of southern california. that's where you will notice the

flood watches up for 21 million people. we recently started to see flash flood warning coming up. l.a. county, santa barbara county included in that. this is what we're concerned about over the next two days as we finish out our weekend. here is why. we have a system that will come on shore. it is bringing potential for multiple rounds of heavy rain. we know it doesn't take much for folks to see flooding in those areas, so the washed out roads, the mudslides, the landslides, the swollen rivers on the table for our friends in southern california over the next couple of days. that front will work into parts of the desert southwest, so parts of the rockies will see additional snowfall and potentially down the line as we get through the workweek we could be looking at this becoming a cross country storm. in the meantime it is folks across parts of the west coast that will have to watch for this for the easter plans. when it is all said and done through sunday, expecting widespread amounts, 1 to 3 inches, but not ruling out the potential for 3 to 6 inches in the mountains and foothill areas. of course, i know we are wrapping up march, heading into

april and should be more spring like weather but we are dealing with the snow that i mentioned. much of it likely going to be in the highest peaks that you will see the highest amounts, up to a foot places like the sierra, across the rockies. that's where we will be watching for the potential for slower travel for our friends this easter weekend. back to you. >> the easter egg hunt tougher when you are trying to find eggs in the snow. angie, thank you very much. we want to turn overseas where there are new concerns over the health of pope francis after he skipped a good friday event to preserve his strength for a very busy weekend. nbc's meagan fitzgerald is in london with more. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. pope francis is resting ahead of tonight's nearly two-hour long easter vigil mass. the key event that starts the easter season celebrations. this is the first time we will see pope francis since yesterday morning's good friday lit uurgy. he was expected to take part in the way of the cross on friday night but cancelled at the last minute, the vatican saying they wanted to preserve the pope's

health ahead of events this past weekend. this isn't the first time we have seen him skip a procession in deference to his health. tomorrow he will preside over easter sunday mass in st. peter's square where tens of thousands of people will gather. pope francis will then, of course, deliver to the city and the world address from the balcony of the basilica, making another busy day in what will already have been a long week for him. guys, at 87 years old this pope has already been going nonstop, despite last night's cancellation. on holy thursday he presided over the mass before washing the feet of women prisoners in rome, and he also presided over services on good friday as well. despite the pope's long bout with respiratory issues and illnesses this winter, he seems to be strong and is pressing ahead as always during this holiest week in the catholic church. peter. >> meagan, are we getting a sense of what the pope is expected to say in his easter sunday address?

>> so, his speech hasn't been made public yet but we likely will hear the pope talk about the war in ukraine, the humanitarian crisis in gaza where he has called for a cease-fire, and what he refers to as the forgotten war. so in places like the democratic republic of congo where people are suffering but they don't always get a lot of media coverage. peter. >> i love it when the world together prays for peace. meagan fitzgerald, we thank you. this morning workers are preparing for a massive salvage operation to help remove the wreckage of the collapsed francis scott key bridge in baltimore. the work crucial to getting commerce flowing in and out of one of the nation's busiest ports. nbc's senior correspondent tom costello has been on the scene from the beginning. >> reporter: arriving at the site of baltimore's bridge collapse, the biggest floating crane on the east coast, able to lift 1,000 tons, for one of the biggest salvage missions ever. just part of a flotilla now en route including the crane that lifted "the miracle on the

hudson" plane out of the river. in all, seven floating cranes, ten tug boats, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five coast guard boats. 8,000 local jobs are waiting. >> we need to clear the channel and open the vessel traffic to the port because the helicalth the maryland economy and the national economy depend on it. >> reporter: on the water, the army corps of engineers is using underwater drones and sonar to map the precise location of the wreckage, then layout a coordinated salvage plan for divers. >> how we can cut it up into the pieces we need to be able to lift. >> reporter: ntsb investigators still interviewing crew members and gathering evidence on the crushed cargo ship, now trapped under the weight of twisted steel. a piece of highway lying on top. so take a look at the front of the ship, at the bow of the ship and you see that piece of steel that's lying across it. that's 3,000 to 4,000 tons. that is so heavy it is pushing the bow into the water, down

into the bottom of the river, and then it is lifting the stern up out of the water. below the water line the river depth is roughly 50 feet. to reopen the port the cranes will lift massive chunks of steel, concrete and sunken cargo containers, some hazardous. all of it must be gone. the sand on the bottom completely clean. >> you can't leave any concrete, any steel because it is a threat to the vessel. we're going to get it all off the bottom and reopen this channel so it provides for safe navigation. >> reporter: meanwhile, in honduras constriction work maynor suazo's family in a heart wrenching wait for his body to be recovered from the water. his brother saying we are still waiting with faith and hope that they will find his body so we can bring him home. back here at the port, that right there is the 1,000 ton crane that they brought out to begin lifting the wreckage up and out of the water. it is not going to happen right

away. they first need to start cutting up the pieces of the bridge so they can be pulled out by the crane. president biden expected here sometime next week. he will likely meet with the governor, with some of the coast guard and army corps of engineer personnel, first responders, and the government has already pledged at least $60 million to maryland. that will be a drop in the bucket for the total cost of the repairs and eventual bridge replacement. peter and laura, back to you guys. >> tom costello. thank you very much. we want to turn now to the crisis in haiti where gang violence has taken over, forcing the prime minister to resign. now perhaps the most powerful gang leader of them all is speaking out and talking about hiber with the latest. >> reps demand. nbc's nb nbc's ellison barber has the l l latest. >> reporter: gunfire, larson, the police unable to match the fire power of gangs.

arguably the face of haiti's gang wars, he controls large swaths of territory and heads the powerful g9 group, an alliance of port-au-prince's biggest gangs. in a rare interview with stewart ramsey he said he is willing to consider a cease-fire but suggests the newly formed government council must include gang leaders. [ speaking in a global language ] [ speaking global language ] >> reporter: in northern haiti the divide is evident. what we keep hearing from people is one of the big concerns in areas outside of port-au-prince is less the violence and less so worry about the gangs and more right now, the concern is about how they do things like this, wash their clothes, how they get

food, how they get clean water. >> it is hard right now to get everything. >> reporter: earlier this week the biden administration approved a proposal to send haiti's police $10 million worth of weapons, ammunition, bullet-proof vests and helmets, all from a department of homeland security stockpile. but to many it has not come soon enough. ellison barber, nbc news. to the race for the white house now where cash is king and president biden israking it in after two days of big campaign fundraising events including one here at radio city music hall that brought him together with democratic predecessors former presidents obama and clinton. nbc's allie raffa is at the white house with more. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. president biden at camp david this weekend, leaving new york friday after that two-day campaign fundraising swing through manhattan that hauled in more than $26 million, setting a new record. the big event thursday with former presidents obama and clinton intended to build off

momentum from his state-of-the-union address and campaign stops in key battleground states, expanding the biden team's cash advantage over former president trump who is hosting a campaign fundraiser of his own next week at mar-a-lago. the biden team already putting these new funds to work, opening 30 new campaign offices in battleground michigan where the president beat his predecessor by just 154,000 votes in 2020 and polls show another tight race this year. the campaign also seizing on an opportunity, courting supporters of trump's former gop rival nikki haley with a new ad called "save america, join us." the first of its kind ad launched friday, now running in eight swing states using a montage of the former president's insults of his former u.n. ambassador to invite her supporters to join the biden campaign, laura. >> allie, that's what is happening with the president but there's a new development when it comes to former president trump's election interference case. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: that's right. on friday lawyers for the former

president and several of his allies charged in the georgia election interference case asked a state appeals court to overturn a judge's ruling that allows fulton county district attorney fani willis to remain on the case. the trump team continuing to challenge willis's involvement after a romantic relationship was disclosed between her and special prosecutor nathan wade, who she appointed to lead the case. a judge ruling earlier this month either willis and her office or wade had to leave it, and wade resigned shortly after. the trump team now arguing that's not enough to resolve their concerns, but still no word on how the judge will proceed with this new challenge. laura. >> all right. but for now that case will proceed. allie raffa, thank you for your reporting. the fda issued an alert on friday about a heart pump that has been linked to 49 deaths in more than 100 serious injuries. the impella pump manufactured by day vision of johnson & johnson will remain in use despite the fda warning it could puncture a hole in the heart. the device looks a lot like a

flexible straw that helps pump blood out of the heart and into other vital organs. this pump is currently implanted in about 100,000 heart patients around the world. the alert gives new instructions for doctors on how to safely use the pump in high-risk patients. a massive fire broke out at an energy plant in jackson, mississippi, friday afternoon. jackson energy says no injuries were reported at its renewable diesel plant but it says plant workers immediately began shutdown procedures when the fire ignited. fire officials say there were no hazardous release of materials there thankfully. time for another check of the full forecast right now. our friend angie lassman has that. happy easter weekend to you. >> happy easter weekend to you guys. we have a couple of things to talk about. we will get to the easter sunday forecast in a moment but if you live in parts of the southern plains, specifically new mexico, texas, oklahoma, we have potential for fire weather there. the recipe is there for the ingredients, low humidity,

above-normal temperatures as well as gusty winds, 30 to 40-mile-per-hour gusts. a heads up. that's today and this afternoon. above-normal temperatures across parts of the plains where you will notice 70s, 80s for that region. plenty of sunshine. great news for your saturday forecast across the southeast. florida, logtts of sunshine. out west, there's the heavy rain i mentioned along with the mountain snow. of course, we have one little spot we will watch across parts of the mid atlantic and the great lakes to pick up additional rain. not all that impressive. that will be out of here before you know it. now, when we look ahead to easter sunday, there's a couple of spots i'm looking forward to. how about daisy, oklahoma? 75 degrees, not bad for this time of year. egg harbor, new jersey, 64 degrees. a little bit of sunshine. a couple of clouds overhead but nothing to complain about. rabbit hill, georgia, you will have a delightful forecast for you as well, temperatures on the warm side of things, into the 80s but great for outdoor picnics and such. the trouble spots, looking at

places like flower pot, arizona, 49 degrees but on the cool side and the rain and snow will be on the table for folks across part of the southwest. we have easter rock, wisconsin, you guys will have to deal with a bit of rain. our friends in easter, south dakota, who knew there were so many cities with the word easter in them. easter, south dakota, 40 degrees dealing with cloud cover. hoppers, montana, 35 degrees with a littl good saturday morning. time is 5:19. we are waking up to some rain in the bay area. i'll show you on stormranger right now. picking up on heavier pockets over the santa cruz mountains. anywhere from swanton to santa cruz approaching capitola now. parts of the peninsula seeing spotty rain from redwood city in stanford. spotty showers throughout the day and thunderstorms in places like san jose later on this

the goal, make the city safer for iran, including their employees. that includes extra police patrols, expansion of a city ambassador program and money to pay for transportation for employees to and from central transit hubs. the funds come months after employees were urged not to leave for lunch because of safety concerns. turning to decision 2024, it is down to the wire in the race for the house of representatives. candidates only have four votes between them. this is in san mateo and santa clara. former san jose mayor already clenched the top spot. two more advance to the november election. next week we might know the answer. bleating ballot counts turning

little rock at 79. 80s in dallas. much of the same area dealing with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal. 80 for nashville. kansas city in the 70s. little rock at 77. as we get into next week, the temperatures will become cooler. cleveland will get into the low 50 start the good saturday morning. time is 5:36. looking out to slick skies and roads over the golden gate bridge. 50 degrees in the city. san jose a bit cooler at 48. we see spotty showers making its rotation down into the south bay. walnut creek 43 this morning and as i mentioned, stormranger picking up on most of that activity off to the ocean, but the santa cruz mountains getting in on heavier downpours over highway 9 and highway 17.

we are back now with our series "your health." the way that a story someone saw here on "today" changed everything for him. >> we have kate snow here to explain. kate, this is amazing. >> this really is. about a year ago, we aired a story about the treatment for lung cancer. it turns out a man in california was watching and he says that story led him to the doctor who saved his life. as a pulmonologist, dr. gary gibbon has seen lung disease. >> i lost weight and developed a cough. i went for a chest x-ray and ct scan. i was in shock i had advanced stage lung cancer. >> reporter: his doctos tried everything. it wasn't working. he was in the icu when his wife

got a call from gary's doctor. >> he started saddling. i heard it. it was it. there's nothing. we exhausted all options. >> reporter: in the darkest hour, gary remembered a story about a year ago where i reported on two lung cancer patients with a groundbreaking double lung transplant at northwestern medicine in chicago. the doctor puts patients on heart-lung bypass and removing both lungs at once. he washes the airways to remove the cancer cells before two new lungs are transplanted in. >> how much difference did it make? >> it was 100% everything. >> what would have happened if you hadn't seen it? >> he would be dead. >> reporter: gary asked his l.a. doctors to contact northwest. he was air lifted to chicago.

cancer treatments damaged his lungs and liver. he needed a double lung and a liver transplant. >> we had the know how and skill set to do it. this patient needed it. we were the only place in the world to do it. >> reporter: the doctor, chief of transplant surgery at northwestern, focused on the liver working side by side with the director of the thoracic medicine. were you confident this would work? >> you know, there is always a little bit of risk when you perform something for the furs time. there was a high probability it would work. we recognize there were certain risks involved. >> reporter: risks like keeping the donated liver alive for 17 hours in a box while he replaced the lungs. >> we used a machine where we

put the liver on the machine and it is pumped through with normal temperature blood and it is working in this box. this liver is functioning on the side of the room. >> reporter: the surgery was a success. >> he was sleeping after surgery. i could see his chest going up and down. i was like, oh, my god. i haven't seen that in months. i hadn't seen him breathing. >> reporter: six months post surgery, gary is now cancer free. >> one of the choices i made right up front with her, i said i'm going to spread the word about this as soon as i came out of surgery and was able to talk properly. i'm like, i'm going to talk about this wherever i can. >> you want to help the next person find it. >> yes. >> this was such a giant group effort. doctors and nurses and people

good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, march 30th. i'm kira klapper. a special sendoff for the navy ship usnf harvey milk interrupted by protesters. that was yesterday in san francisco at pier 30 and 32 where the ship was docked. during the onboard celebration about ten demonstrators made their way on to the ship's gangway demanding an end to the israel-hamas war. protesters chose "the milk" because they heard the ship was headed to the middle east. the crew says that's not true. a supply ship in virginia the next two years. in the end, several people were detained by police. a major bay area airport may soon get a new name. the oakland airport is considering changing its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport.

tomorrow. millions of people packing the nation's airports. thursday, by the way, was one of the busiest travel days, and the nation as highways will be busy as well. people heading out for spring break. how is the weather looking? angie is here with the forecast. a lot of folks are looking forward to a bit of sun. we have good news, we have bad news. you want the good news or bad news first? >> whatever you give us. >> i get to decide. this is my rule. we have a couple of spots we are watching. let's start with bad news. one across parts of the midwest that will leave us a little bumpy. plenty of rain associated with it but a quick mover. it will work out into pargts of the mid atlantic, you will see some of that there. out west is where we have difficult conditions for folks there. heavy rains specifically for southern california with multiple rounds of this rain expected. because of that we have flood alerts up. 21 million people under flood watches but you see the red box around l.a., that's where we're watching the flash flood warning at this time. when it comes to the rain we will see this system working in

here through the day today, but notice we have multiple rounds we will watch on top of the additional snow that we will see across some of the peaks. it is not just the sierra range, also the rockies get in on this as well. the system will push across parts of the southwest and we will see some of that rain work into that region. but the highest totals centered across parts of the southern california region. we are talking anywhere from 1 to 3 inches for the more widespread areas but up to 3 to 6 inches possible for the mountains and foothills. that means that the flash flooding concerns will be there, the landslides, mudslides on the table as we get through the next couple of days. we will see a break as we get into early next week. back to you. >> angie, thank you very much. as we mentioned millions of americans are traveling this weekend for the holiday and spring break. last night there were some harrowing moments in the air for more than 300 people on board a united airlines flight from tel aviv destined for newark, new jersey. high wind and severe turbulence forced the plane to divert to a suburban new york airport

instead. officials say no one was severely injured, but seven people were taken to the hospital for observation. some passengers there were complaining of motion sickness and chest pains. the flight eventually continued on to newark. now to that deadly bridge collapse in baltimore. the president announcing a visit to the fallen francis scott key bridge next week as the federal government seeks to accelerate the timeline to clear the debris and reopen the port of baltimore, but there is still significant work to be done before the salvage operation can begin. nbc's aaron gilchrist is in baltimore with the latest. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: joe, good morning to you. you are right. president biden expected to come here next week, potentially as early as tuesday to see the wreckage right here, likely to fly over it and be able to see just how massive this wreckage is. the boat and bridge intertwined here in the water just outside baltimore. the president will also see the response, the massive crane brought into the area, one of three on site now, a fourth

coming from the navy on monday. it will be part of a massive fleet of shipts, up to 50 of thm that will be here to begin the procession of removing the bridge from the water, removing the boat from the water and recovering the bodies that are still missing. divers are waiting to go in as they do the assessment and planning part of this operation. maryland governor wes moore saying this is an operation that's going to have to be planned to a t, and they're going to have to reassess every moment as they make moves to go in to try to make sure that this waterway can open and that the port of baltimore can reopen. joe. >> aaron, what are the governor and investigators saying about plans to try to recover the bodies of those four workers who are still missing? >> reporter: it is a key part of the mission here, joe. we know that there were eight workers on the bridge when it collapsed earlier this week, and there are still four of those workers who are unaccounted for. i want you to hear what governor wes moore had to say to the families that are still waiting for word about their loved ones. >> they are living a nightmare
