who celebrate. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast including a chance of rain today. >> good morning, kira. good morning, everyone. final saturday of the month and waking up after a really soggy start to the weekend in san francisco. temperatures in the low 50s. starting out of day. throughout the saturday, a chance of seeing more peeks of sunshine as the afternoon goes on. this system is not quite done with us yet. seeing a chance of on and off showers at times possibly a chance of seeing thunderstorms develop through parts of the bay area. show you that as well as what's ahead for our easter sunday. the morning starts dry, but there is a chance of seeing some afternoon rain. i'm time it out for you. exciting events this weekend including the bay fc home opener. show you all of that and more coming up in my full forecast in about 15 minutes. >> we look forward to it, cinthia. thanks. we have breaking news this morning. at least two people are injured following a massive three-alarm

fire in san francisco. it happened just before 2:00 this morning in the mission district. firefighters responded to several cars on fire on east street between 15th and 16th. the car fires quickly spread to nearby homes between rees and julian avenue. at least nine people are displaced this morning. this fire follows another fire 24 hours before at nearby episcopal church on 15th. firefighters are investigating the causes and reremain on-scene to monitor hot spots. turn back to our forecast on this holiday weekend. "today in the bay's" jocelyn moran spoke with people in the south bay who say they're sticking to plans for easter and family gathering, rain or shine. >> reporter: soggy for many across the bay area. windy and heavy shues in the south bay. wet weather created some problems in sonoma county.

a large oak tree came down on a senior center damaging the roof. those inside were evacuated and thankfully no one was hurt. >> heard a loud boom and they all headed out the door. hopefully after the tree is removed from the roof they'll be able to reoccupy monday, hopefully. >> reporter: the bay area experienced quite a few wet weekends recently. more rain expected this easter weekend. >> i'm honestly shocked. i thought cali would the fun in the sun. you know? beaches. playing with beach balls. it's not like that. >> reporter: this woman and her boyfriend planning on going to santa cruz tomorrow. rain or shine, not letting the wet weather change their plans. >> push through regardless. >> reporter: others choosing to stay home. >> annoying. can't go out and do things i want to do without having to be like, chock it up to the rain, move ot. not go out, stay home. >> reporter: with it being easter weekend quite a few events happening around the bay area including san jose spring

extravaganza at the park. >> possibility of rain really affected how many people we think will come. last year we had nearly 2,000 people in the park. but i don't think we'll have that many this year. >> reporter: organizers are hoping around 300 people will show up this year and if it does rain, they've got a backup plan. a trick-or-treat-style egg hunt indoors. in san jose, jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. for bay area rain to sierra snow. this is a live look at interstate 80 in soda springs west of donner summit. a heavy dose of snow this weekend. chain controls in effect for i-80 and route 50. yesterday, though, snow and ice made for slick conditions for drivers. at one point i-80 was at a standstill because of multiple spinouts. s many people head up to the mountains for the weekend, chp urges drivers to go slowly. key resorts reporting plenty of

fresh powder this weekend. >> we're looking probably, let's just say at minimum at lake level. 12 inches. you get up to the crest down at the western slope, looking 24 inches with a high. depending on aspect and elevation up to three feet. a great way to wind down march, easter and roll into april. >> several tahoe ski resorts announced extending their season. sugar bowl and kirkwood open to end of april. get this. palisades tahoe open until memorial day. monday may 27th. weather and conditions permit it. to our south now if you're planning to head to the coast this weekend. a portion of highway 1 remains shut down this morning after heavy rain caused a landslide last night. caltrans says the highway is closed at ragged point. that's near the san luis obispo county line. it's not clear when the highway will reopen. and remember, you can track

the weather 24/7 on your phone when we're not on the air. use the camera on your phone to scan that qr code on your screen. it will take you straight to our app where you can stay on top of the weather where you're going. download our app for free. new this morning, a new warning from bay area health leaders about several measles outbreaks as cases continue to climb across the country. the cdc confirmed 97 cases of the highly contagious and dangerous virus so far this year. in just three months from january to march, higher than the total all last year. the virus appearing coast-to-coast with cases reported in 17 states. five cases have been reported in california since february. the cdc says most cases are linked to international travel, because the bay area has three major airports, health leaders say anyone without the mmr vaccine is at an increased risk

of getting infected. we spoke with a bay area health expert how to minimize your risks. >> checking fatigue. a measles outbreak in the country you may be -- visited, maybe. and again, vaccination, up to date on your vaccinations? particularly the mmr vaccine. if not get vaccinated ahead of time. >> measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose and rash. dangerous for children. more than half of cases in children younger than 5. vaccinated people rarely catch the virus. if they do, symptoms are less severe. nearly 500 cameras will be installed along east bay freeways and around the city of oakland to help fight crime. governor gn gavin newsom made t announcement yesterday.

nbc in the bay's pete siranos said it's long overdue. >> reporter: supporting governor newsom's suggestion to install cameras. it's an issue with shocking chp video showing a freeway shooting wednesday in union city. another one along 580 in oakland. referencing 2020 shooting death of a 2-year-old shot asleep in his car seat in his parents' car as they drove along 880 prompting a call for action from citizens for safer freeways. demands finally being heard. >> those cameras definitely helping us to solve crimes.

>> reporter: 290 cameras installed along surface streets in oakland with an additional 190 cameras placed along east bay freeways. the city confirms the oakland cameras mentioned by the governor are the same cameras the mayor promised in october. oakland council member reed explains how the cameras will be used around the city. >> going to be positioned throughout the city. we know in hot spots that our police chief and command team already designated the areas. >> reporter: however, some community groups aren't onboard with more cameras. >> why don't we make sure that the things that are working right now in the city of oakland aren't torn apart. due to the budget crisis. >> reporter: insulation of these cameras will take months to complete but the process begins in the next 30 days. when the cameras do go up storing foughtage up to 28 days. reporting for "today in the

a heffenly sunrise over the bay area. wow. as we look southeast from marin. a holy saturday indeed. tax day is two weeks from monday, and in addition to the stress of getting taxes done on time scammers are working overtime to get your personal information. here's "today in the bay's" marcus washington with tips. >> reporter: identity theft is on the rise. in fact, according to the irs, last year was the second highest year of identity theft in history. now, with tax season in full swing there are stepping you can take to protect your information. google technology experts say, do this -- use two-step password verification adding another layer of protection logging on to anything. also, use face or finger recognition, if possible. this way make the password specific for you. and keep up with the software updates. but in the end of it all, they say the best thing you can do, ignore possible scams. >> now, the internet, and the

you can see the map of the diversion here. the airline says the plane was a boeing 777 and landed safely in the mile high city. this after boeing's ceo david calhoun announced this week he would step down end of this year. he says this is part of a broader management shake-up following a series of mishaps. not due to put recent series of united maintenance issues. a major bay area airport may soon get a new name. the oakland airport is considering changing its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the airport code "o.a." k. encouraging more people to travel. considering the name change in about two weeks, thursday april 11th by the commission. happening today an event to celebrate cesar chavez in the east bay happening in oakland as sears chavez park.

corn. then easter peeps. my kids love those. number four, marshmallow eggs. fifth, solid chocolate bunnies. best candy in the cadbury family mini eggs. my personal favorite. time to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. i could just talk about candy all morning. let you take it away. >> it's all right. what i'm bringing to my family's easter party tomorrow. a lot of chocolate for everybody to get really hyper throughout the day, myself included. talk about about the weather. people are busy celebrating a lot of things. waking up to showers winding down after a soggy start to the weekend. most of that rain on the santa cruz mountains way up on the ridgetops and out to the ocean. as we talk about those events, there's an egg hunt this morning in belmont with over 16,000 eggs. count all of them. as we go throughout the morning, we stay mostly dry. a bit chilly and the grass is

probably soggy. be careful with that. don't wear your best outfit. the afternoon seeing rain, a chance, and lightning. that could be debited not only there but through parts of the bay area and gusting winds as times. possibility of hail as well. because we're taking a look at this system continuing to rotate further south into southern california. the central coast. that means for us going into the afternoon, a lot of that actively focused in the south bay. with a chance of seeing heavier downpours going into about dinnertime in san jose. morgan hill and into santa cruz. as we continue to look at that rotation, we should be clear. by the time we go on into our saturday night plans that is. a few passing light showers into the midnight hour. overall things are starting to wind down. could be good news if going out to the paypal park for the bay fc home opener. what a pride and momentous moment for them. could be drying out the stands that might be wet, take a couple extra paper towels and a jacket.

chilly out there tonight as the game starts at 7:00 p.m. going into our sunday plans we start off sunday morning, easter morning, going to church, getting egg hunts ready and fairly dry. into the afternoon could see a chance of developing rain showers through parts of the north bay. as that system continues to come down into parts of cocoa county. that's it. the sierra, a winter storm warning. best to keep the plans here local as we go on taking a look about maybe a half foot to a foot of some fresh powder. ahead e into next week we start april on a dry and mild, i know a lot of people waiting for that sunshine. here's your chance. early on into the week, monday, tuesday is your best bet to soak up all the sunshine before you get to, again, we go into rain going into late week. we continue to track those details as the week goes on, but overall our seven-day forecast, spotty showers at times. don't be alarmed if you do hear that clap of thunder. just go on indoors and overall,

prom season is here for some high schoolers and promises to be a lot of fun, but it's haven't expensive. garvin thomas introduces us to a group of north bay high school students working to make the event accessible for any budget. he has their story in this morning's "bay area proud." >> reporter: it was a year ago at the village at corte madera. and live ra getting ready to open the doors of redwood high school's very first prom boutique but wasn't sure anybody would come in. maybe olivia thought those people she saw lined up near the apple store would stop by. >> were like, oh, a new iphone coming out something like that. soon as we opened our doors tons of people, like at least 50 people, came rushing in the doors to get a dress. so that was such a special

moment, because it really made us feel like what we were doing was very needed and appreciated. >> reporter: the reason all of those people wanted to come to the prom boutique, you may have already e guessed, because this isn't an ordinary prom dress shop. every dress you see is free. this year charlotte lacey's first time helping out. after hearing about the prom success last year charlotte knew she wanted to take part and knew they would need more dresses. >> working on this at least six months. six hours a week putting this together. >> reporter: the team pulled together donations of more than 500 dresses and accessories. >> jewelry here. handbags, this whole wall filled with handbags. definitely got rid of a lot of those. >> reporter: olivia and charlotte, like their peers, in 9 middle of prom preparations themselves and know the hundreds of dollars a dress can court and

what a great way to start it. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. looks nice out there now, but a lot of activity on your radar? >> yeah. a lot of that activity we tracked from yesterday morning until today. i'm showing you a loop right here on our satellite and radar. gusty at times. showers. even lightning detected offshore. this system will continue to barrel down the central coast and into los angeles and some sierra snow for the holiday weekend plans. it was a really impressive rain, mostly in the north bay, and the santa cruz mountains. boulder creek nears that and approaching that in saratoga and mount tam. about an inch in that highest peak in mill valley. look at what's ahead. tracking spotty rain, a chance of isolated thunderstorms. sierra winter storm warning until tomorrow morning, but sunshine on the horizon.

"today in the bay's" emma goff spoke to the d.a. and caltrain about the case and what consequences those two men could face. >> reporter: the first apartment was built here inside the historic burlingame caltrain stigs, the other in millbrae. both facilities not used by the public. how they were able to go unnoticed for so long. it's a crime that baffled san

mateo count county's district attorney. >> no explanation for what they did other than taking advantage of a situation and used our taxpayers' dollars to do it. >> reporter: joe navarro, former deputy of operations and seth worden a contractor working as a station manager accused of spending thousands of taxpayer dollars to illegally convert closed-down caltrain offices into their private homes. completely showers, heating and security cameras. >> particularly the one in burlingame. nicest job ob. spent $42,000 to put in a a shower, a bed, a kitchenette and basically played it a mini apartment. >> reporter: the d.a.'s office declined to share photos of the two apartments. both men had homes of their own yet morgan lived in millbrae station between 2019 and 2020. worden. he was eventually discovered during a station inspection and promptly fired. according to the d.a.'s office, navarro rented and occupied the

burlingame station between 2019 and 2022 when an anonymous caller tipped off caltrain. they reported the matter to the d.a.'s office and began investigating last may. the two men are accused of working together on the illegal home. worden hired contractors to do the remodels and navarro approved the expenses. the invoices were small enough not to raise alarms, according to the d.a. >> because mr. navarro was in management of caltrain and their rules were that any invoice under $3,000 does not require higher approval, mr. navarro to approve it and that's what they did. >> reporter: arraigned in san may toe oh subpoena court wednesday and pled not guilty. navarro due to be arraigned soon. emma goss for "today in the

bay." and making the city's downtown safer. the companies jointly announced the effort yesterday including blue shield of california, clorox company, kaiser permanente and pg&e. the goal, make the city safer for everyone including their employees. focusing on expanding police patrols, an ambassador program and private transportation for employees to and from central transit hubs. the $10 million effort comes months after several of those same companies urged their employees not to leave the office for lunch because of safety concerns. across the country now special equipment in place in baltimore, maryland as crews work to clear the wreckage of the francis scott key collapse and the cargo ship that crashed into it. malt poor cranes arrived yesterday. one carrying the biggest crane on the east coast able to lift 1,000 tons. the same time the army corps of engineers is using underwater

drones and sonar to locate the wreckage helping them lay out a detailed salvage plan for divers. we've also learned president biden plans to head to baltimore next week. the ntsb investigators are still interviewing crew members and gathering effort from the ship. six construction workers were killed when the bridge collapsed last tuesday morning. turning now to decision 220. 2024. the race is extremely close. leading assembly member evan low by just four votes. they are vying to fill the 16th congressional district seat in san mateo and santa clara counties. representative ana eshoo is not running after 32 years in congress. form other san jose mayor sam liccardo secured the top spot. smithian or low will advance as

it wouldn't be spring if we weren't talking about area baseball. a's game. first pitch 1:07. breaks in the sunshine as the after goes on. could be breezy. bring that jacket to keep you myself and cozy watching the game. if you thought you could escape the rain and go see the giants down in san diego, wrong. that system barrels down into southern california and that will be soggy. watching out for potential delays in the game. look at storm ranger. most of that activity from last night started to wind down a little bit. showers are being picked up off to the coastline, offshore. as we go throughout the day, we'll see breaks of sunshine here and there, but the system is not quite done with us yet. our temperatures will be in those cool 60s throughout most of the bay area. a few spots going into those mid-60s like concord, san jose,

palo alto pt and santa rosa 64. a chanceof scattered thunderstorms. the system takes a counterclockwise term mainly second half of this afternoon. 2:00, 3:00 rolls around heavy downpours along the peninsula into san jose and into morgan hill and gilroy. isolated thunder at times could pick up the wind also maybe the possibility of hail out there. this continues with us as we go on into about dinnertime and into the early parts of the evening before we start to quiet things down for our saturday night plans. as far as what we can expect for our easter sunday, maybe light showers are in the early midnight hours. then going into a mostly cloudy easter sunday morning. those egg hunts going off to church or anything that you're doing and then into the afternoon, you're going to get into a tricky situation. models painting a hint of possible rain showers into the north bay. from napa county, sonoma county

today." >> wait. harry smith is leaving? i didn't know that. catch willie geist and stick here for local news with us on "today in the bay" at 7:00. back here locally, a quick look at the top stories we're following this saturday morning. new this morning, roughly nine people are displaced following a massive three-alarm fire in san francisco. it happened just before 2:00 this morning in the mission district. firefighters responded to several cars on fire. this is between 15th and 16th. the car fire, though, quickly spread to nearby homes, as you can see, between wiese and julian avenue. two people injured. just yesterday morning there was another fire nearby on 15th street at episcopal church at st. john the evangelist on good friday. firefighters are investigating the cause of both fires. seen a lot of off and on rain in the last weeks.

are many rearranging easter weekend plans? spans across the bay area heavy winds, and they brought down this large oak tree on a senior center in sonoma county. everyone evacuated. no injuries. the rain is expected to continue off and on through it the weekend. >> annoying to the point. can't even go out and do things i want to do without having to be let's chock it up to the rain and move on. >> even public events are worried about the effects of the rain. fewer people expected to participate. they have indoor plans in case it rains. that event starts at 11:00 a.m. and to our south. part of highway 1 is shut down this morning after heavy rain caused a landslide last night. caltrans says the highway is closed at ragged point near the monterrey county san luis bispo

county line. how will the forecast shake out this weekend? one last look. >> a counterclockwise rotation down into the central coast. highway 1 and down into southern california. for us it means we deal with spotty showers. as the afternoon goes on. if we look at my graphics here. the bay fc home opener could be in the clear after those showers. game starts at 7:00. all i'm seeing is a possibility of the stand being wet. do bring your jacket, though, as it is going to be a chilly night. what an exciting time for them out there at paypal this afternoon. as far as our seven-day forecast goes, looking at a chance of seeing thunderstorms develop down here mainly for the south bay. this afternoon. please, take notice of that. come inside if you hear thunder roars and then as we go into sunday, easter sunday starts out dry. there is a chance of things, light rain into the afternoon. mainly for the north bay and parts of cocoa county.
