welcome to nbc bay area news at 5:00. spring storm, it's moving across the bay area now bringing rain, thunder, and snow to northern california. our storm ranger is busy tracking that storm. retail storm hit east san jose

this afternoon. video shows the tiny pellets piling up on a front porch. >> that is morgan hill. video just sent in to our newsroom, shows heavy rain falling in a parking lot earlier today. we're seeing a little bit of everything including sunshine. let's get to rob mayeda who is tracking the severe thunderstorm warning. >> if you were at morgan hill or the southern end of the sara clara valley, may have noticed the severe thunderstorm warning for that particular thunderstorm which you're seeing to the south and east of san jose. that did expire at 5:00. that storm produced quite a bit of hail at times and ghost winds which triggered the severe thunderstorm warning where radar indicated wind gusts of 60 miles per hour. it was only moving at ten miles per hour. it was very easy to put down some accumulating hail along

highway 101. but the good news here is that the lightning intensity within the last 30 minutes has dropped off. you can think of these storms sort of like big batteries. once they generate a lot of hail, they will have a lot of lightning associated with it. and now the lightning has dropped off, and some of the hail production has started to decrease with that storm. so what's left of it, though, still tracking west/northwest. could skirt by near campbell and cambrion park. the movement, off to the west. an area of low pressure to the south is triggering the severe weather today. aiming the worst of it across central and southern california. and what will happen in the next couple of hours, we're going to lose the heating of the day that really boosted the instability with those showers. so we should see a decrease in coverage and intensity of those storms, especially around the south bay as you move forward into the evening. we still have a few more showers also in that sunday forecast. we'll have a look at that hour by hour coming up in about ten minutes. >> thank you. it's a rough night to be driving in the sierra. this is what it looks like on

i-80. you see the snow-covered roads, low visibility right there. one car trying to pass through. chain controls are in effect on i-80. at least for now they are not required on highway 50. the chp says anybody driving in the area should be carrying chains. there are people heading up to lake tahoe this weekend. this is what it looked like earlier during a break in the storm. you can see the kiddos playing in the snow. again, if you're planning on heading up to the sierra, bring chains, and expect slick roads. don't forget you can track the rain and snow while you're on got by downloading our nbc bay area app. scan the qr code you see on the screen, it will take you straight to our app. now to san francisco where nearly a dozen people are out of their homes this easter weekend after a fire ripped through two apartment buildings. it happened overnight in the city's mission district. >> yeah. that's right. now investigators are trying to piece together what happened and whether another recent fire has any link. here's more.

>> reporter: just before 2:00 a.m., a fire tore through parts of two residential buildings in the mission district. the buildings are on julian street, but damage is visible from the alley behind it. firefighters received 911 calls as it started. >> a fire in the exterior building behind me. looks to be that it was reported by the cars that were there at the time. and it spread vertically to the buildings adjacent to the vehicles, and subsequently ended up having to remove the residents and fight fire when they got into the building. >> reporter: the lieutenant with the san francisco fire department says the fire ultimately grew to three alarms. >> it was a one -- one elderly lady who was escorted out of the building with smoke inhalation. there was another minor injury. 11 residents were displaced. none of them requested any red cross assistance. >> reporter: investigators are trying to put together what

happened and determine whether it started by accident or was lit intentionally. it left neighbors rattled. >> mostly in the neighborhood they're outside because this is apart from the back. >> reporter: neighbor jean baker's building was not damaged, but she said the situation made her wonder about another fire reported at a church nearby yesterday. >> good friday and this one saturday morning. it's too much going on. >> we have to look at them independently of each other and not jump to conclusions so early on. >> reporter: meantime, this residential fire is out, but the impacts are far from over. >> the building will be red tagged so there's no people who can live in their unit unfortunately. and then investigative team will continue to investigate the fire. >> reporter: in san francisco, nbc bay area news. three people are recovering after an early morning cash in the north bay. it happened on highway 12 near the border of napa and sonoma

counties. investigators say a car crashed into a creek. three people inside the car were taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. the cause under investigation. the mayoral race continues to heat up in san francisco. today one candidate made a stop in chinatown. mark ferrell who served in 2019 after the unexpected death of ed lee is running for mayor. in front of a crowd he talked about growing up in chinatown, calling it the heart and soul of the city. he also focused on the big picture and outlined plans to improve san francisco from crime reduction to the struggling economy. >> i am running for mayor because the city that i grew up in is not the san francisco that we have today. over the last five years, i have watched san francisco crumble. public safety has never been a bigger concern. the conditions of our streets have never been worse. and our economy is literally dead last in the country. we can bring san francisco back. >> farrell also spoke with small

business owners. he is running against incumbent mayor london breed and other top contender including nonprofit founder and levi's heir daniel lury and san francisco supervisor aja alay. the biden administration now sending thousands more bombs to israel, according to three officials. the package includes nearly 2,000 one-ton bombs and hundreds of 500-pound bombs. the munitions delivery was approved years ago, but it's only being fulfilled now. antiwar activists say they are deeply concerned that heavy weapons will mean more civilian deaths in gaza. one senior administration official notes the one-ton bombs have been known to injure or kill people up to 1,000 feet away. israel says the bombs are noes eliminate hamas. at the same time the u.s. is sending more aid to palestinians. the u.s. air force carried out this airdrop operation over gaza yesterday. the u.s. military says it's conducted 18 airdrop missions this months to help civilians caught in the war zone.

more than 32,000 palestinians are believed to have been killed since october 7th. that's the day hamas killed 1,200 israelies in a terror attack. closer to home, demonstrators are again looking to put pressure on politicians to demand a cease-fire in gaza. hundreds gathered in palo alto today for a rally and march in support of an immediate and permanent cease-fire in gaza. many in the crowd have been going to city council meetings every monday demanding the city approve a cease-fire resolution. they've also been holding a vigil every sunday in palo alto in honor of the children killed in gaza. they say they feel their efforts are falling on deaf ears. >> it's frustrated and disappointed in elected representatives, city council, due to our congressional representative and senators in the state. we simply want a cease-fire resolution and none of the above are willing to do that. and that's the only thing that can stop the killing. >> organizers say while members of the city council have held talks with them, none has

formally agreed to support a resolution. israel says it will not agree to a cease-fire deal that does not include the release of all hostages taken during the october 7th attack by hamas. community members came together to honor soldiers killed during the vietnam war. ♪♪ that was the remembrance ceremony for those soldiers at the vietnam war memorial in downtown san jose today. the ceremony began with presentations of color and -- colors and remarks from local leaders and members of the san jose vietnam war memorial foundation. they read the names of the fallen soldiers. the foundation says it's part of how it gives back to those when gave everything. >> it's always been about the loved ones and those we lost, of course. you know, the board, we had an objective and that was to give back to the community and also to the ones that were lost from san jose. these are all the boys that were lost from san jose that were lost on the soils of vietnam. >> this is the 11th anniversary

of the san jose vietnam memorial and remembrance ceremony. it comes just one day after the national vietnam war veterans day. coming up, fresh snow at the palisades, tahoe. how much has fallen as people head up the hill for some spring skiing. and the severe thunderstorm warning has expired. but the active weather continues around the bay area. watching this line of showers including hail moving through the santa clara valley. how much more will last for your easter sunday coming up. and soccer fans are taking over the south bay. getting ready for the home opener at paypal park. we'll have a live look at all the excitement.

it is a milestone moment tonight for bay area sports. the south bay getting ready to cheer on the bay area's newest soccer team just a couple hours from now. bay fc took on the houston dash in their home opener. >> yeah. very exciting. nbc bay area's emma gos is at paypal park where fans are arriving for the first official women's soccer game in the bay area. how's it going? >> reporter: it's a party here at paypal park. the team already played two away games. this is their inaugural home opener. and so the fans are streaming in, there was an expected soldout 18,000-person crowd

tonight. and everyone, the first 5,000 fans coming in the doors, and they just let them in starting at 5:00, they're getting these inaugural pins to celebrate this momentous occasion. and they're welcomed into fan fest which is the opportunity for fans to really get excited early on, two hours before kickoff. so we're seeing people tailgating, people, younger fans, young girls especially, bringing their soccer balls with them. they're kicking them around in the outside of the gates in the parking lot. and everyone's enjoying taking photos, grabbing food at the food trucks, there's giveaways, there's deejay and music. there's a drum march. we're expected it to be a fun night the whole way through. this is a big deal for soccer fans, for women soccer fans. lot of young girls here coming in excited to see the stars play on the pitch.

more. >> we've been chasing thunderstorms, severe thunderstorm warning that did expire at 5:00 for theierra let you the view. it's slowing down to lake lefrl. gorgeous view there. 30 degrees, snow still flying. and we'll probably see as you heard another half foot to a foot of snow coming down. the winter storm warning through 11:00 tomorrow morning. so we should see improving driving conditions tomorrow afternoon and as we head into monday mortgage. the snow continues -- morning. the snow continues. right now, partly cloudy. san francisco, 61 degrees. look at the view from sfo. clouds on the other side of the coastal ranging. we'll scan underneath the clouds and radar coming up in a moment. right now, 61 degrees. around the peninsula, 62 in walnut creek, not seeing too much in the way of showers. a different story, look at that, to the south and east of san jose. 61 with storms off to the south and east. now where it comes bay fc's home opener, 7:00 start. may have a few showers early, but things should trend drier as

that game continues. so stay tuned on the forecast there. this is the line, by the way, that may toss a few showers at the very beginning of the game. it has lost intensity. we're not seeing lightning associated with it. what's left of this line tracking westward. essentially right along highway 87, highway 85 there in the southern end near south san jose and the valley. may head toward saratoga and los gatos in the next hour. a few more scattered showers approaching the sunol grade. and there's a view underneath those towering clouds you saw from our san francisco camera. san francisco international airport camera looking off to the west. that continues to move east to west, kind of unusual. we've got low pressure to our south, and it's the counterclockwise flow around it which is bringing in showers and storms from the east. but now as we lose the heating of the day, the intensity of the showers drop off, moving forward into tomorrow morning. some clouds, a few light showers early. then by the afternoon, might see a few pop-up showers. east of morgan hill, another

area, if you're in the north bay easter sunday might see a few isolated showers dropping to the south. overall, a lot less in terms. showers for tomorrow versus what we had today. morning temperatures in the 40s. highs tomorrow staying cool, low 60s around san jose, san francisco, and oakland. but as we move forward, monday and tuesday, finally some 70s on the map. in fact, tuesday could see mid to upper 70s, and i can see terry and gia excite -- excite about the spring temperatures. watch white house wednesday and thursday. three days of warm weather as high pressure builds in. stay tuned, there it is -- thursday, we'll see a chance of some rain coming back. and sierra snow, so focus on the first three days of the seven-day forecast if you like spring weather because it's going to be quite warm starting tuesday and wednesday. but yeah, thursday some rain chances. next weekend could see some showers. 85% of the weekends this year have had rain and showers. >> that right? >> yep. and we're not going to break the

customers. the company says the leak happened two weeks ago. more than seven million current customers are affected, and more than 65 million former customers. they say the information that was kromized includes -- compromised includes social security numbers. they say some data has been posted on the dark web. at&t said it's attempting to contact affected customers, and it's offering free credit monitoring services. taking a live look at sfo as spring break travel kicks into high gear. tsa says yesterday was the tenth busiest travel day of all time. agents screened almost three million people at airports throughout the u.s., and the rest of the weekend is expected to be busy, too. if you are flying, tsa is saying head to the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight. you should get there three hours ahead of an international flight. still to come, the olympics quickly approaching. we check in with a bay area gymnast hoping to make team usa.
