5:31 pm
>> reporter: police also say the thieves stole some illegal merchandise, including guns and drug paraphernalia. they say those items won't get returned. the four burglary suspects are currently in jail. west coast self-storage declined to comment on the case. in san jose, scott budman, nbc bay area news. closing a loophole to tackle car break-ins, a new law is making its way through the state legislature to do just that. under current law suspects can only be convicted if prosecutors can prove the car door was locked. this bill closes that loophole by making forcible entry, such as a broken window, enough evidence for conviction. the bill was authored by san francisco state senator scott weiner. it's cleared its first hurdle and now moves to the senate appropriations committee, though similar legislation in 2018 and 2019 both failed to pass committee. a notable decision on the peninsula on a very busy road, no more street parking on el

camino real in palo alto. last night the palo alto city council voted 6-1 to ban street parking to make way for bike lines. caltrans proposed the plan to make the roads safer. opponents say they're concerned the proposal did not address speeding drivers. city leaders asked caltrans to create a safety plan at intersections and other busy areas. the new bikeway is expected to be completed by next year. no deal, the a's have yet to lock down a temporary home after the season. we already know the team has one foot out the door moving to las vegas, but they still need somewhere to play until their stadium is built. that's at least until 2028. the a's met with oakland city leaders today with a possible five-year $97 million lease extension. it would give the a's the option to opt out after three years, but the team would still owe the city the full amount of the contract. today the office of mayor sheng thao called it a fair and reasonable offer and they look forward to more discussions, as
5:33 pm
necessary. we heard from the a's before today's meeting. they gave us a statement saying in part, "we appreciate oakland's engagement and also we are far apart on the terms needed to agree on an extension." the a's are also looking at playing temporarily in sacramento or salt lake city. across the bay a totally different story, the giants are celebrating their 25th season at oracle park and a roster they have filled with quality players. today i chatted with giants ceo larry baird at the commonwealth club in san francisco. here's what he said about the role the giants play in revitalizing san francisco's image. >> we're wearing san francisco across our chest. we go out on the field every night and day for seven months and feel we're representing san francisco and in some ways that narrative, we think it's overblown. there are problems here. they need to be addressed, but
5:34 pm
all cities have problems. we feel strongly that the neighborhoods are thriving and that's not being portrayed. it all starts here at the innovation economy. look at a.i. >> baer has been a power player in san francisco for decades. he had a lot to say also about the a's situation and their proposed move to las vegas. we'll hear more from larry baer on our 7:00 news. today san francisco celebrated reopening of a pair of residential hotels in the city's tenderloin. it was a welcome reopening in a neighborhood that has become ground zero in the city's drug and homelessness crisis. nbc bay area joe rosato jr. shows us the hotel's long history. >> reporter: on any corner of san francisco's tenderloin, you're likely to find the telltale signs of desperation and hopelessness, but on the
5:35 pm
corner of mason and eddie streets is a building long known for offering hope. today mayor london breed cut the ribbon signaling the completed renovations of the ambassador and ritz hotels, two sro buildings housing more than 220 low income residents. >> for the lives of the people that this will impact. >> reporter: it's the latest chapter in the long legacy of the ambassador which first became a residential hotel in 1917, but it was in the 1970s the building flung open its doors the widest, as thousands of gay men from across the country made their way to san francisco. >> so a former kindergarten teacher named hank wilson decided he was going to make a place for them to go. >> reporter: wilson took over the lease of the ambassador and turned it into a haven for those wayward travelers. >> if you found your way into the lobby of the ambassador, they figured out a way to get you a room. >> reporter: the welcome mat
5:36 pm
stayed out, even as the aids crisis gripped the city. the ambassador was the only sro hotel that would take in people suffering from hiv and aids. >> hundreds of people died here. five people died in one day. >> the kind of haven for folks who were suffering from aids that had nowhere to go, literally nowhere to go. >> reporter: the nonprofit tenderloin neighborhood development corporation took control of the building over a decade ago and just completed a $16 million renovation. residents like adele henway can now count an affordable and renewed roof over his head. the renovation of this historic building which includes elaborate seismic upgrades is an important new chapter for the ambassador. >> a lot of folks come to the tenderloin who are on their way out. a lot of folks in the tenderloin are on th down. you need spaces like this for folks who have nowhere else to go. >> reporter: although hank
5:37 pm
wilson was known to hate attention, it will be his face people see as they enter the lobby. joe rosato jr. -- >> hank's smile is still welcoming people into the ambassador. >> reporter: -- nbc bay area news. a new report suggests we're in the middle of the biggest surge in anti-muslim bigotry in 30 years. the data comes from the council on american-islamic relations or cair detailing more than 8,000 complaints of hate crimes, education or employment discrimination and asylum requests. more than 3,500 of those were reported just after the israel- hamas war began in october. cair says this is just the most recent wave of islamophobia. the two other waves happened when former president trump announced the ban on people coming to the u.s. from predominantly muslim countries and when that policy was put into effect in 2016. >> every one of these is a human experience and it all
5:38 pm
points to one very simple conclusion. islamophobia is baked into american society. it had to exist in the u.s. prior to october because what october shows us is a switch was flipped and it was back on. >> also worth noting, students at uc davis are joining a lawsuit against the university saying the school failed to protect them from anti-semitic harassment. changes are coming to the railroad industry to try and stop major accidents. the rail industry has been pushing for one-person crews on trains as a cost cutting measure, but a new federal rule will now require a second crew member on all trains. at an event announcing the new regulation transportation secretary pete buttigieg said rules like these are a big step toward avoiding a major accident like the one last year in east palestine, ohio. >> a second crew member is vital to performing safety functions like securing a train with hand brakes, handling
5:39 pm
track switches that are not remotely controlled, obtaining track authorities, assisting in emergencies, and much more. >> the rule does allow for some exceptions on smaller railroads, but operators must first notify regulators and comply with new federal safety standards. he says he's owed a slice of a settlement worth almost three quarters of a million dollars, but so far he's seen zilch. i'm sure you've heard about the solar eclipse coming our way next week. we'll look at the best time to get you

he was expecting a settlement check, but it never arrived. >> he asked our investigator for some answers. >> we have some answers, not

sure about the money just yet. vincent in daly city wrote us about a class action lawsuit settlement, specifically the big facebook settlement, $725 million. forbes estimates millions of people get about 30 bucks each. here's the thing. vincent said he applied for his slice over a year ago before the deadline, but i haven't heard back from anyone on the status. when will i receive a check? fair question. we checked with the law firm that's handling the settlement. it says the court approved the final settlement in september, but now two parties have objected and said they want to appeal. now the law firm says settlement payments cannot be distributed to eligible claimants until the appeals are resolved. how long is that going to take? well, the time frame for resolving the appeal can vary widely. sorry, vincent. you got to keep waiting for your 30 bucks. it's too late for others to join the suit, but if you
5:43 pm
previously applied like vincent, you can watch for updates online at facebookuseerprivacysettlement.m and we'll keep an eye out and when payments finally go out, we'll alert you so you don't mistake it for junk mail or spam if it's emailed. if you're missing money anywhere, we'd like to hear about it. you it tell us online. scan the qr code on your screen now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. big thanks to vincent for sharing his photo. we do like to see the folks we are helping. that's bonus stuff, not required for us to help you out. >> always good work. thank you, chris. we have developing news right now, an update on a major earthquake that hit taiwan, 7.4 magnitude. it hit before 5:00 our time. that's 8:00 a.m. wednesday morning taiwan time. the epicenter is on the eastern side of the island country
5:44 pm
about three hours south of taiwan. there has been an aftershock of 6.5. there's an evaluation if there's any tsunami threat to california or anywhere on the west coast, still getting detail to see if there are injuries or damage, but again, a significant earthquake in taiwan, 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit before 5:00 our time. back in the u.s., the powerful storm that hit us last weekend is cutting across the country with nearly 70 million people in its path. the storm has moved into parts of the south and midwest with at least four tornadoes reported in oklahoma and missouri. some families had to brave the elements to reach safety. in central kentucky thousands were left without power after storms took down trees and power lines. >> a ton of wind and they both came down and the power line like flicked against my window and sparked. >> look at these weather maps here. the storm is headed for the northeast, i believe heavy snow and powerful winds expected what probably now and the days
5:45 pm
to come? >> right through parts of the midwest through tonight and also tomorrow. janelle, you just reported on the taiwan earthquake. there's no tsunami threat for the west coast. japan could see tsunami waves up to about 3 feet. taiwan could see waves up to 9 feet ranging 3 to 9 feet. right now locally around that area there is starting to become that tsunami threat folks are unfortunately going to have to watch out for tonight. >> 7.4. >> big earthquake. >> that is very, very strong. back in the bay area we had sunshine today, really nice to get outside and enjoy it. rainfall is coming our way and fast along with some colder temperatures. let me show you the changes. the area of high pressure that brought us warm weather today heads to the east tomorrow. that will allow the next storm system to edge closer. i think heading through tomorrow's forecast it you'll notice the difference. we'll see cloud cover returning along with some fog for the
5:46 pm
morning. i wanted to make sure to get this in here again. at 7:00 widespread low cloud cover in the morning, maybe drizzle near the coastline. fog clears back by afternoon, but we'll still have high clouds filtering across, so not nearly as sunny as it was today. numbers will be back down to 49 through the peninsula, south bay here at 47. we're also dipping down to 51 in san francisco and the east bay checking in at 48. now as we roll through thursday's forecast, that's when the storm system is really going to kick into high gear. we're looking at temperatures dropping another 10 to 15 degrees thursday. you'll see the scrolling seven- day at the bottom of your screen. along with colder temperatures we're looking at rain and thunderstorm chances. let's move it into the rain timeline. i think thursday holds our best overall chance for some rainfall, also snow for the
5:47 pm
sierra. we could get snow levels as well down to 2,000 to 3,000 feet thursday night into friday morning. a dusting of snow across the bay area mountains, now in april. just going to feel more like winter here heading into thursday and friday. i think just a spotty chance here as we head into friday's forecast. rainfall totals on thursday, everybody good for about a quarter inch or less. some of the mountains could get in on about a half inch and then as we head through friday, most of us a 0.1-inch or less except for parts of the peninsula and the coastline at about a quarter to half inch. rainfall thursday and also friday. next thing to fast forward to next week and the solar eclipse, i'm sure you've heard about it. we'll give you all the details now. we will actually be able to see things the way the forecast is looking now. this is the deal.
5:48 pm
it begins next monday 10:14 a.m. we'll see our maximum view of the eclipse for us, which will be partial, at 11:13 a.m. the sun will be obscured by 35% here and then the partial eclipse will end for us by 12:15. we are going to be able to get something. the best eclipse path i wanted to show you goes from texas through the midwest and that's where they'll be in that total eclipse zone. there's going to be some clouds in some parts of the u.s., but certainly very, very exciting. here in the seven-day forecast, slight chance of a spotty shower saturday and sunday and then we warm up and get the sunshine back as we roll into next week's forecast. i'm going to get our earthquake tracker and map up. we'll take more looks at that coming up tonight at 6:00. >> thank you so much, jeff. up next, the nfl draft is quickly approaching. our 49ers insider gives us a glimpse what to expect on draft da y.

the giants and dodgers continue the three-game series in l.a. logan webb will pitch for the giants. >> blake snell, an update on the newest member of the giants, snell the reigning cy young award winner expected to make his giants debut monday at oracle park when the giants host the nationals. he wasn't able to start the season on time because he
5:52 pm
agreed to a contract with the giants well after spring training started. he needed some training himself. he did pitch against double-a hitters last week and is expected to pitch in a simulated game tomorrow. bottom line, blake snell expected to make his giants debut next monday night. the nfl draft is later this month. here's the million dollar question. who are the 9ers going to pick? our 49ers insider sat down for the scoop. >> in our first mock draft you had them say in sims, offensive tackle from georgia. >> feels like a popular pick. >> at least the position. tell me who did you kind of consider there and why did you ultimately go with mims as the pick of 31 overall? >> jordan morgan, offensive tackle from arizona, also was under consideration. he'd been a left tackle. i know trent is year to year now, but it's hard to when you're a team this close to
5:53 pm
winning the whole thing, potentially playing a guy out of position right away, especially one that i think ends up being a good true left tackle or guard in the nfl like jordan morgan. i consider robinson, penn state edge rusher. >> he has a crazy first ten yards time. >> fastest among all edge players and defensive linemen, very, very fast off the ball no, surprise there. he's definitely got the quickest first step in the draft amongst all pass rushers. production was a problem, six sacks in two plus years. he basically had a one-game season in 2022, started in maryland, two sacks there, this past year four sacks with penn state, two of them against umass. not exactly a powerhouse program. that's the question. why didn't it come together in the sack department at the college level and will it come
5:54 pm
together at the pro level. his teammate isaac also on the radar, had a good day yesterday as well. these penn state pass rushers are ridiculous average. it's crazy. have one every year or two it feels like. just that general defensive line depth probably worth considering. >> you can watch more on nbcsportsbayarea.com or by downloading the 49ers talk podcast. still ahead, more news, including bizarre new accusations against kanye west, what a former employee says he wanted children to do at his pr norman, bad news... i never graduated from med school. what? but the good news is... xfinity mobile just got even better! now, you can automatically connect to wifi speeds up to a gig on the go. plus, buy one unlimited line and get one free for a year. i gotta get this deal... that's like $20 a month per unlimited line...

more progress in baltimore as they continue to deal with that massive bridge collapse, tonight's a clear picture what it looks like underwater, the u.s. navy releasing these sonar images today showing the magnitude of the wreckage at the bottom of the river right there where the key bridge used to be. it was one week ago a cargo ship rammed into the key bridge killing six construction workers. today crews opened up a second temporary channel to allow a limited number of vessels to navigate around the wreckage site. troubling allegations involving rapper kanye west and donda academy, the private christian school he opened. back in 2022 the rapper opened this school in los angeles and months later it was shut down. now a former employee at the school has sued kanye west for

hate speech, harassment, and discriminatory behavior. he's accused of spreading anti- semitic conspiracy theories in front of staff and students. the former employee also said west expressed wanting to shave students' heads and lock them in cages. this lawsuit joins several other filed over the last two years by staff at that school. celebrations for paris olympics well underway and one way they are doing that is through art. organizers unveiled these six venus sculptures today located in front of the french national assembly building. this work is part of the cultural olympiad program that combines sports and culture for the olympics. the art was constructed by a french sculptor who said it was inspired by the venus demilo structure at the louvre. the art will be on display until october. still a lot more news
