know ahead of first pitch. thanks for joining us for our midday news cast. >> in just over two hours, the giants will host the padres in their home opener at oracle park. bob redell is joining us live to take us out to the ballpark. bob, what can fans expect this season? >> reporter: well, there are a couple of new upgrades to oracle park. good morning to you both. waiting for first pitch, at 1:35 on the mound right here behind me. as you can see, the giants right now, they're doing their batting practice before their home opener today against san diego. if you've been in the bay area for as long as i have, and you remember the first season here, this was packed out park, then it was at&t, and now oracle park. it still feels like this is a new ballpark, but this is actually the giants' 25th season

here, which means that this season they're going to do an upgrade to the lighting and the brand new sound system. we just spoke with the giants ceo on the importance of keeping oracle feeling fresh and new. >> we're not going anywhere. so it's a 75-year lease, and it's going to be here for a long time. we hope it ages like the camden yards has aged, but then wrigley and fenway. but or our heirs to enjoy this park forever, for a century. >> reporter: today's home opener is obviously a day game. when the giants play tomorrow night, fans will notice a new lighting system. you can see this in the video they handed out with the demonstration. it will include colors and 12 spotlights throughout the park that can articulate and point in all sorts of directions. he tells us it can bring to oracle the same kind of lighting

experience you feel at an nba basketball game in an arena. as i mentioned, the giants have replaced all the speakers in oracle park. you can hear the sound right now with new sound technology. >> you'll be able to feel the bass line a lot more than in years past. we heard from our players that, you know, the difference in them hearing their walkup music is really significant. we're trying to create a homefield advantage. >> reporter: earlier this morning, the giants put out some of their new foods on display that will be available in the park. there's crab noodles, and a lot of chicken. and i stand here with cinthia. i'm just nervous saying buku chicken. how are we looking for the game? >> looking good. we'll enjoy the food and the forecast. the skies are parting way, giving way to sunshine for

opening day. yesterday we had some really active weather. so what does today have in store snit's friday, the weekend. so we have to get people that hourly forecast for me, please. we have some active weather yesterday, rain and hail. but today, we are dealing with more sunshine, more breaks in the cloud cover. it is a bit chilly. people are layered up, so bring your jackets, beanies, blankets. everything to keep you warm. the winds will be 20 to 30 miles per hour and only reaching the mid to upper 50s. so it's san francisco, it's cool, and it's in that microclimate forecast where the changes happen quickly, bob. so you have to layer up as you come out here. >> we had our gloves on earlier, we were in the giants dugout earlier. they have heaters on the ceiling. so we were doing this trying to keep the digits warm. fortunately we don't need them right now.

>> cinthia pimentel and bob redell live for us at the ballpark. guys, thanks. well, you may have woken up to many texts from your family and friends on the east coast this morning. tens of thousands reported feeling a rare earthquake. >> meteorologist kari hall will join us right now to break it down. kari, where exactly where this senter? >> that was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that was centered in lebanon, new jersey. it happened about 7:30 our time. and it caused several buildings to shake in new york, philadelphia, and in boston. we want to take a look at the security camera that captured the moment it happened in new jersey. and debate was held up at u.n. headquarters in new york city as the room shook. and wnbc new york broke into coverage as soon as it happened. one of the reporters happened to be at the office of emergency

management at the time of the quake. we spoke with him earlier. they were shocked to feel an earthquake on the east coast. >> one felt a little bit different. it felt the smaller rumble. and i thought that train really seems like it might be getting close. and then the entire bed started to shake. the windows started to shake. i could see my dresser shaking from the bed, and it didn't last too long, but definitely enough time where i could hear things moving around in the apartment, and then looking out my window, i could see the telephone poles swaying just a little bit, the windows moving a little bit. >> new jersey governor phil murphy is activating its emergency operation center and asking the public not to call 911 unless they're experiencing an emergency there. the governor of new york says that crews are also out check on buildings and brejs.

-- bridges. >> one of the largest earthquakes to occur on the east coast in the last 100 years. so i directed my emergency management team to start doing damage assessments, any life in danger and finding out whether there's any bridges or tunnels compromised. >> many people taking to social media saying they felt it and were really shaken. look at all the tweets there. while earthquakes in the northeast are rare, buffalo, new york was struck with a 3.8 magnitude earthquake in february of 2023. it was the strongest recorded in that area in 40 years. we continue to see if there's any more reports, but thankfully no one was injured. back to you. >> thanks, kari. one of the survivors of the half moon bay massacre is suing the owner of the two farms where he was shot and his brother and six others were killed. >> kris sanchez joins us now with what he hopes to gain through this lawsuit.

>> reporter: we expect to hear from him in a few moments. this is a man who is not yet 30 years old and hasn't been able to work because of his own injuries and is suffering from the loss of his brother. felix romero and his attorney also speak any moment now. you can see the setup right there. his brother is among the seven people killed there in half moon bay in january 2023. he has gone through three surgeries himself through -- after that massacre. between his wage losses and the loss of his brother, the family is suffering emotionally and financially. later today, he will talk about why his family says that the mushroom farm owner is also responsible for his brother's killing. while confessed gunman admitted to pulling the trigger to our janelle wang, the romero family says the owner didn't secure the farm, despite a shooting months before there, despite physical

threats from the former manager, and despite living conditions they say were so deplorable that people were living under tremendous stress. our colleague, robert handa, is going to continue our coverage in the later news cast. the setup is ready to go. turning now to decision 204. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin will make his run official tomorrow morning. the event is scheduled where he plans to announce his candidacy. he confirmed his plan earlier this week. he enters a crowded field with current mayor london breed and several others. this is officially the final season at the coliseum for the oakland a's. the team announced it's moving to sacramento next year while it builds its new stadium in las vegas. so it's celebrating with

players, past and present, with a bunch of promotional events. it's bringing back the double play wednesdays that offers discounted tickets and hot dogs. starting in june, alumni will return to sign autographs every sunday and will induct some of its players into the athletics hall of fame. happening now, santa clara county officials are trying to bring attention to distracted driving awareness month. those leaders are hold agnews conference highlighting education and extra enforcement on the roads in april. the national highway traffic safety administration says distracted driving killed more than 3500 people in 2021. a reminder, you should pull over if you need to send a text behind the wheel or assign a passenger to the task. avoid scrolling through apps while driving. still ahead, californians are paying a lot more on their pg&e bills, and the ceo is getting a pay raise. ahead, we'll share new details

joe biden is in baltimore where he's geeting a briefing from federal and local officials on the state of the cleanup of that fallen key bridge. >> scott mcgrew got a tour of the damage from above. >> reporter: that's right, from marine one. baltimore just a short hop from

the white house. the governor of maryland was on board with him. on the ground, the president is going to get updates from the u.s. coast guard and the army corps of engineers. baltimore, as you well know, is a critical port. getting that bridge out of the water, along with alternate channels in the water is the highest of priorities. not just for the city but the american economy in general. joe biden is going to speak in about 30 minutes. the white house says he's going to reaffirm america's commitment to rebuilding the bridge. after that, he's going to meet with the families of those bridge workers who are killed on the day that the ship struck the bridge. >> and scott, with biden having experiences of his own loss, many have found him to be comforting. >> unfortunately, he's particularly good at this. he's lost children, a wife to a car crash, and then cancer. so it is something that he knows. he knows grieving. >> yeah. scott, a lot of concern, a lot of questions still, is there money to fund the rebuild of this bridge?

>> biden says yes. and there is -- there's more than a trillion dollars in the infrastructure bill, right? and about -- something like $100 billion was set aside just for bridges. so that could be used. they think it's going to about up to $2 billion. of course, that's money that is not poured into other bridges that need to be repaired. and the long-term hope is that even if the government spends the money, some kind of liability and insurance will cover some of this. but at this point, we don't know why the ship hit the bridge, other than it lost power. we don't know why it lost power. >> scott, thank you. the israeli military is issuing new action follow thing week's attack, which killed seven world central kitchen non-profit workers. following a probe into the air strikes, the idf agreed to fire two top officers. an investigation found serious errors and violations of protocol that led to its forces repeatedly hitting the convoy.

the idf says its forces believed it was attacking hamas gunmen. israel is agreeing to open two new routes to get more desperately needed humanitarian aid into gaza. joe biden says the u.s. will change its policy towards israel if it does not change its tactics in the war-torn region. the message was communicated as part of a tense phone call between the two leaders yesterday. now, one bay area couple is experiencing the pain from the realities of the ongoing conflict. this is the sister-in-law of someone still believed to be in hamas captivity. this is a picture of him and his wife ramone on his wedding day. they disappeared during that october 7 hamas attack in israel. ramone was later released with other hostages after 50 days in captivity, but she, along with their bay area based family, are still anxiously waiting for news of the hostage's fate.

>> i think something that everyone can connect and identify with is, you know, the love that we have for each other, the love that we have for our families, for my brother, my sisters. the type of love, just thinking about them carries with them. i'm sure that type of love is in gaza for people carrying for their loved ones. >> she with others will stand in solidarity on the six-month anniversary of the middle east conflict, holding a vigil sunday at the overpass in lafayette that will start at noon. turning now to silicon valley, more than 600 apple employee also be let go in the south bay. the cuts are set to start may 27th for workers in santa clara after apple canceled a project to build an electric car. the notices the company filed

about its actions list the same address, which this is this car research lab. this is the tech company'sst major layoff in ny 30 years. as a whole, u.s. jobs marke appears to be doing better than expected. that's according to a march jobs report. itsore than 300,000 j were added last month. they only predicted the creation of 200,000 jobs. this is the largest jump in one-month payrolls since may of last year. the unemployment rate is down to less than 4%. rates keep going up for pg&e customers but we are learning more about what is paid to the ceo. patricia pope received nearly $17 million in direct compensation next year, about 20% higher than she was paid in 2022. a pg&e spokesperson says about 74% of executive's direct compensation is tied to improvements and safety,

operational and financial performance. the utility earned more than $2 billion in profit last year. that is about 25% more than it did in 2022. unfortunately, first friday in oakland is postponed due to the rain. the event was supposed to start today. the town's signature monthly celebration, you might recall organizers pumped the brakes on first fridays at the start of the year through march due to financial constraints. organizers say the plan is to open next week. but if not possible, it will start in may. let's head across the bay for a live look at san francisco, where restaurant week is back. participating menu also offer special menus starting today through april 14. they'll offer brunch, lunch, or dinner at price points between $10 to $90. ten bucks, that's quite the deal. >> i'll take that. but i guess the question is, are you eating outside or inside?

that depends on the weather. >> i would take it inside. it's going to be windy and cold. you don't want to get your food and then it cools off because the wind is blowing and it's chilly out there. that's the kind of conditions we're dealing with. as we look at our weekend forecast, mid 50s today. and the temperature drops quickly, as soon as the sun sets. not only is the actual temperature cool, but what it feels like is lower, because we could see gusts 25 to 35 miles per hour in the city for this afternoon and the evening. the wind calms down a little bit tomorrow, but we're still in the upper 50s with a mostly sunny sky. as of right now, we're at 50 degrees in walnut creek. all of this feels like winter, and not only that, but we've also seen some snow on our bay area peaks. once the clouds peel back, we may see a coating of snow there. we saw that yesterday, as well. with a closer look with

stormranger, still spotty activity but not as widespread as we saw yesterday. looking at the east bay, this is where we have the highest chance of more of those showers coming through, and possibly a few isolated thunderstorms this evening that may contain some small hail. and looking at our bay area mountains that low snow coming down to about 2,000 to 3,000 feet. and then our overnight lows tonight, dipping into the upper 30s in the sierra. we have about two to four more additional inches of snow before things taper off and conditions will improve if you're going there for the weekend. a look at the high temperatures for today. hayward and oakland, 59 for the high temperature for this afternoon. and upper 50s up and down the peninsula into the north bay. about 59 degrees. as we take it into the day tomorrow, it's only slightly warmer, reaching 62 in san jose. these numbers are once again well below what we usually see in april. but if you hold on a few more days, it is really going to warm up.

you have probably seen that. the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. looking at the hour by hour forecast, it shows a little more activity ramping up around 4:00 to 5:00 this evening, for parts of the east bay sboshgs the north bay. other than that, it looks like we stay dry. you may wake up very early sunday morning to hear some rain hitting the roof that. is in and out of here quickly and should not impact your sunday plans. we go back to drier and warmer conditions. looking at our seven-day forecast, we have huge changes here. we're going from winter today to spring-like on monday and time for the partial solar eclipse. and looking beyond that, it's going to feel more like summer. we'll have low to mid yagtds in the forecast for next week. san francisco looking at gusty winds. temperatures in the mid 50s. going into next week, some mid 60s and then low 70s. so a lot of changes here, changes in wardrobe as you deal with all of these different

well, the a's might be leaving oakland after this season, but the city's newest baseball team is ready to take center stage. >> the oakland ballers are holding open tryouts for its upcoming season. it's happening tomorrow in oakland from about 10:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. they want to recruit local players for their upcoming inaugural season, starting may 21st. the team already has more than 50 players signed up for
