are under fire, after their animals appeared to be suffering and malnourished. and now a criminal animal investigation is under way. this is an exclusive story. and i have to warn you. some of the images of these horses are disturbing. there's basic care that every animal deserves. and i don't see them getting it. and it breaks my heart. >> becca says she's sickened by how the horses that live in the pasture near her home are being treated. she called animal control after two horses down. one in the field, and one so skinny, it couldn't stand up. >> she was laying on the ground. and couldn't get back up. she's completely emaciated. >> the mare was too sick to save. >> i tried to give her some

love ask they euthanized her. i told her, her life mattered. >> animal control confirms they have opened a criminal animal cruelty investigation. they had 48 hours to get a vet- approved care plan. >> they don't have clean water to drink. >> several of the mares appear to be pregnant. she says they have babies every year. >> they stay there -- stay here until they're four or six months old. then they disappear. this morning, several were rounded. forcing one to jump through the fence to get away. >> they declined to talk to us. but they loaded two animals in

a trailer. tonight about a dozen horses remain in the pasture, including one dead one. >> they're watching vultures eat one of their herd mates. there's bones scattered across the pasture that you can see. i would like to see them fed. taken care of. receiving be basic veterinary care, in homes where they're valued and appreciated for the beautiful creatures that they are. >> reporter: in solano county, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area fuse. >> we will stay on that story, of course. a deadly shooting in san francisco today. it happened this afternoon, at 1:30 in the afternoon. near el capitan. they found a man who had been shot several times. paramedics tried to save him. but he later died. so far, no arrests or motive for this attack. it was one of the most horrific crimeless. a farmer went on a rampage,

killing eight. on behalf of himself and the brother who was killed robert handa has the story. >> pedro romero felix perez, barely survived the attack on january 3rd, 2023. pedro was shot five times, including twice in the stomach ask once in the face, by chun li zao. ped said he is still recovering. >> i'm still in pain. and still trying to get better. >> pedro's brother jose is thinking about him. >> in california, landlords. all landlords have a duty to

protect their tenants from a criminal act coming on their property. and california gardens did nothing to protect bed row or his brother or the other victims of that shooting. >> reporter: today, the law firm filed lawsuits on behalf of both families, against the farm owners, california tera gardens and jin min guon. saying they created deplorable living conditions. the owners declined to comment. pedro said he and jose lived in shipping containers. >> and were made for shipping goods. but it had been converted into an empty space where they were forced to make their home. >> those conditions led to the shooting. >> the shoot are. when you find out the facts. what caused him to do the shooting? what caused him to do the shooting was the environment he was living in. >> attorneys say this case

could branch out in many directions. for example, a class action lawsuit. as well as state and federal involvement and try to improve leveling conditions for all farm workers. a local task force has already formed to inspect the 120 farm businesses san mateo county. sjpd is already making plans about how to keep people safe. last year, celebrations in east san jose turned illegal. police broke up crowds because of side shows. this year, the department says it is taking a different approach. officers will be more proactive. in fact, more officers on the streets and road diversions, dealing with traffic or crowds, before they become a problem. okay. check it out. we are almost the first week of april. and yes, that is snow at the top of mount hamilton in the south bay. how did that happen? >> we know how that happened.

>> it has not stopped raining. and it is cold outside. but it's supposed to be spring. hopefully those may flowers. it is very cold. and that image that you saw there, at the summit. elevation is at 4200 feet. but at one point, we did see that drop down to around 1500 feet yesterday. 2200 feet today. which is why some of those peaks today got that action. i want to turn your attention to the live cameras. but also wind speeds. if you look at oakland here. wind the to the west. also, parts of san francisco pretty gusty at 32 miles per hour. and a lot of activity, still showing up on radar through california. but for us here. in the northern portion. a lot of this is starting to move east. some of those getting decent

downpours. lightening strikes. there's just enough instability to where we're going to see the chance for thunderstorms for the next couple of hours if you're going to be traveling to southern california by the way. they're also seeing snow through the peaks. i'll give you the extended outlook coming up. >> vianey. thank you. >> goal is to brighten the clouds. lena jones is on the uss hornet to explain. >> that roar is not coming from a snow machine. instead, the plume you see are tiny aerosol particles. it's the first technology in the country to test ways to brighten clouds in an effort to cool the globe. >> this system is composed of three main. >> in these, a group of

scientists from the university of washington's marine cloud brightening program are mixing salt, water and a system. to see if these can distribute the right sized particles. they say it provides the perfect sized cloud conditions over the bay. >> if you make the particles that are too small. they're not going to create the effect that you're wanting. if you make them too big. they will actual leis create or induce rainy clouds. >> reporter: the goal? to mimic the effects of pollution in a cleaner way. using salt water to brighten clouds, which they hope will then reflect more sunlight into space to help cool the earth. still in the early phases. program director, sarah doherty says right now, they need to figure out if it's even possible. and how much impact it could have. >> to understand -- with something like marine cloud brightening. you're not going to reverse global warming. so it's important. how it plays out in the climate

system will depend on where you brighten clouds and how much. >> elena is excited about the research. but caution that as it heats up. it is not without controversy. while there are certain benefits from trying to cool the environment, we are not quite sure what kind of negative effect. >> doherty believes reducing emissions is the most important tool. but that alone won't be enough. >> we are kind of committed to significant climate disruption. the question is, are there things we can do to help reduce suffering and impacts? and this might be one of them. >> the group of researchers plan to be here throughout the summer. they also hope they can make this an educational experience for those who visit the museum. in alameda, velena jones. this could not have come on a better day. it feels like new year's day for a lot of people.

okay. want to go back to that breaking news we told you about a moment ago. that shooting that happened on 80 and berkeley. >> cnbc's alyssa gord is on the scene there. what do we know at that point? >> we do know that one person was injured here. but we do not know how severely that person was injured or what exactly caused those injuries. wheeze are currently on the eastbound on-ramp of i-80. interstate 80 off of the ashby avenue onramp. they say they got a call about four:45 this evening. and officers assigned to the crash came over here. they found a car, a silver camry that was crashed into the barrier here. can you see that camry still on the side of the road here.

it's collided with the barrier. now, what we've heard from chp is that they are investigating this as a freeway shooting. and they've said that a person is injured. but they really haven't had a lot of other details to share about what exactly transpired and led up to the shooting. it also definitely has been impacting the evening commute here. jess and raj. >> it's friday, 6:00. a lot of people are on the move there. alyssa, thank you. we'll check back in with you. it's not pouring rain like we've had the last couple of commutes stph-td tphoub the majority of that book is in through parts of the central trivalley area. but we're not completely in the clear temperature-wise. that's going to be the definite temperature. low 30s. as we dip down, that cold air mass will settle in. especially with the clearer

conditions into saturday morning. i want to show you now where that rain is. some areas are already seeing sunshine. portions of central california still active. i want to zoom in on a couple of areas. livermore through tracy. and parts of vallejo well r as well. if kpraoáur traveling up the 605. you're going to catch rain as this continues to move out. another thing as well. we've still got the wind factor in san francisco. it's about 32 miles per hour now. from the west/northwest. if you look at the icons here. we are going to see some clearing skies. heading into the overnight morning hours. this is going to play into how cold we get into the morning. san jose now, does have a decent amount of cloud cover.

if you look here. wind speeds. temperature-wise early morning hours. here's the headliner. frost advisory for the areas in blue. and we even have a freeze warning through parts of calistoga. san rafael. and livermore. those wint wind sheltered valleyless. how cold are we going to be in i took this to about 8:00 a.m. part the of the south bay. low 40s in the afternoon. these will bump into the 50s. and heading into sunday morning. we do see a couple of 30s up to the north bay. low 40s yet again. the difference between saturday and sunday. side, we still have an area of cloud cover with a chance for light, scattered shower activity by evening. by sunday, we see that hotter air mass settle in. and you'll see it moving in right here. saturday, that disturbance to the north. look at this orange glow that you see stretching portions of not only the bay area. but the rest of california.

all right. are you ready for the eclipse? on monday, you probably know this by now. certain parts of north america will go dark in the daytime. a total eclipse is expected about 11:00 a.m. we are going to get a piece of the action. >> ahead of monday's solar eclipse, this group of students from santa rosa, checked out the exploratorium. >> i saw a mini theater, all about the solar eclipse. and how it would affect your eyes in the area, where it's going to be the full eclipse. >> there are a few ways to safely watch monday's eclipse, including some that are pretty simple. >> putting my hands together to create a shadow and the gaps in

my fingers are going to allow the sun's lights to pass through. and you will notice those are circles on the ground. >> in the bay area, we'll see about 30% of the sun covered by the moon. you'll need special glasses if you plan to look directly at the eclipse. >> wherever you acquire the glasses, you should look for a little iso rating, which is basically an indication that this is designed for observing the sun. that should be very stkarbg. you wonder if you fit the bill. and can still see anything. they're not dark enough. don't use them. some retailers are selling viewing kits that have a few pairless of glasses in them. but be wear of scammers looking to cash in on the excitement. the san francisco public library handing out the real
