everyone. i'm bigad shaban in for kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joining us, too, with a look at forecast. how cold are we talking? >> down to the 30s, bigad. good morning. good morning, everyone. frost advisory for areas shaded in blue. along the peninsula mountains, santa cruz down into the south bay, east bay and north bay. temperatures readings now just above freezing in scotts valley at 34 as well as in dublin and danville. then we go up to the north bay where it's also 35 degrees in calistoga. planning our saturday, first weekend of the new month, we'll see more breaks of that sunshine. not talking about severe weather like we have been the last couple of weekends. a good note there. clear skies over san francisco allowing us to see the golden gate bridge. overall calm and cool this weekend. tomorrow a chance of spotty showers, not for everyone. and warmer temperatures. 70s and 80s. exciting. back in about 15 minutes. bigad, back to you.

>> see you then. a 70-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after losing control of her car, crashing through two fences and ending up in a canal in contra costa county. a worried neighbor heard the crash and called 911. the woman traveling westbound on highway 4 in bay point, veered off the road into the contra costa county canal. >> firefighters and floatation devices, access the vehicle on ladders, and we broke out the sun roofer to make contact with her. then able to open the driver's door and have her access out of the canal along ladders we put down. >> firefighters say the woman was conscious but cold and scared. she was take ton a trauma hospital for possible hypothermia. california highway patrol is still trying to figure out who opened fire on an east bay freeway during rush hour. the shooting caused a driver to crash on the ashby avenue on

ramp heading eastbound to i-80. "today in the bay" the alyssa gordon was there and explains. >> reporter: during rush hour a crashed silver sedan parked on the ashby avenue on ramp to i-80 eastbound as investigators tried to figure out how it got there. >> we found a vehicle that had been involved in a crash, and it appears that prior to the crash the victim in this vehicle had been struck by gunfire while on the on ramp. >> reporter: the person driving that sedan was taken to the hospital with injuries, and chp says the passenger in that car was not hurt. officers are investigating this as a freeway shooting. >> the victim in this situation could have possibly sustained injuries in the crash as well. so we just need to determine what's going on. >> today announcing 480 new

cameras. >> reporter: just last week, cameras installed. caltrans tells us while the cameras have all been installed many won't be up and runninging in mid-april. meantime, when this incident happen get in touch. >> no matter how little you think that piece of information may be it may be incredibly valuable in our investigation. >> reporter: reporting for "today in the bay." one of california's most infamous convicted killers wants his death sentence reconsidered. richard allen davis convicted of the 1993 kidnapping and murder of petaluma 12-year-old polly klaas. a recent california law invalidates wis sentencing and conviction for former convictions. entiting him to a new sentence. >> reporter: convicted in 1993 of kidnapping and killing 12-year-old polly klaas hosting

a slumber party at her mom's home with david kidnapped her. his conviction led to california's three strikes law. three decades later, lawyers representing davis argued he is entitled to a full resentencing. >> throw this crime right back into my face yet again, 30 years later and it shouldn't be done. >> reporter: polly's father marc klaas was at the superior court where the hearing took place n. 1996 when the trial concluded i stepped in front of the cameras and said, finally, this is over. yet here i am 30 years later. think guy the gotten every consideration under the law since the day he was arrested. >> reporter: the last couple of years criminal justice reforms having to do with the fact california prisons are overcrowded. looking to expunge minor sentences like drug sentences. lawyering representing davis are hoping to use the recent reports

to their advantage. one of the laws sb 483 introduced by bill allen, senator. he said our law was definitely not designed to undue death sentences of condemned child killers like him. >> i think the court will look carefully as to whether these guidelines actually apply to mr. davis and his death penalty verdict or only used in other sentencing schemes. >> reporter: this could set a precedent for future cases. >> other courts in california are going to look at this case in deciding how they handle these death penalty decisions when they have to go back and do resentencing under the new law. >> i think the judge is very good, very thoughtful and will come to the right decision. >> reporter: important to note, while davis has been on death row the death penalty on pause

by governor newsom. the judge did not issue a ruling. the next hearing is scheduled for may 3. firefighters on treasure island battled flames in an abandoned building saying plywood covered windows making it harder to get ideas. squatters were living there. one person believed to be inside was taken to the hospital for breathing in smoke. an investigation is under way after a shooting left a man dead in san francisco. it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon near the el capitan hotel on mission street. police said the man was shot several times, died at the scene. last check no arrests made. happening today, a funeral for a young man killed by sun nyvale officers. police found a 19-year-old, perez, walking middle of the road holding a knife. officers say they told him to

drop it, but he refused. that's when police say he moved towards one of the officers. they then opened fire hitting him. perez later died at the hospital. his family says he was a harmless boy who suffered from mental health problems. the funeral held at 11:00 this morning in red wood city. turning to decision 2024. san francisco supervisor aaron paskin making a mayoral run official this morning. an event scheduled at portsmouth square and plans to announce his candidacy. he confirmed plans to us earlier this week. he enters a crowded field with the current mayor, a nonprofit executive, san francisco's supervisor and former san francisco mayor mark farrell. still about a month away from cinco de mayo but san francisco police are making plans already how to keep people safe. authorities say last year's celebrations in east san jose got out of control with crowds gathering to watch cars

performing dangerous stunts in the middle of the road. to avoid these side shows this year the department says it will be more proactive promising more officers and road diversions to deal with traffic are and crowds before they become a problem. united airlines and sfo are once again under scrutiny after another incident involving a flight that had just landed at the airport. it happened thursday night as the plane was taxiing to a gate. when it accidentally clipped wings with another united airlines plane already parked. no one hurt. it's been a turbulent few months for united and sfo alone, at least eight incidents involving united flights. i spoke to a retired commercial pilot he told us what he thinks caused the latest incident. >> quite simply, either one of the aircraft was not on assigned lead-in line, or they shortcut trying to get into the gate and in doing so they did not leave themselves proper clearance to

welcome back, everyone. taking a live look. looks good in red. natural orange i think is the official color. the golden gate bridge on this chilly morning. welcome back, everyone. a rare earthquake took a small nibble at the big apple and parts of the northeast yesterday while it was big enough to shake the statue of liberty, no reports of damage or injuries. 4.7 quake struck about 50 miles from new york city. happened just before 10:30 yesterday morning. shock waves felt by people 300 miles away. stretching from philadelphia to boston. >> the entire house was just shaking. so in my head i just thought there was going to be an explosion. >> you know, experiencing things, you don't experience things like this in new york. >> several small shocks hit the region throughout the day.

usgs says more will likely continue for days, even a week. luckily no reports of damage or injuries. geologists say the tremor is the most significant quake to rock the east coast since 2011. a high-tech idea to cool the planet is being tested in the east bay. scientists with the university of washington's marine cloud brightening program are doing experiments on the uss. sending saltwater aerosol particles into the air called cloud seeding and the goal make clouds brighter. why, you may ask? they say brighter clouds reflect more of the sun's rays back into space, which can help cool the planet. >> a good chance it works. the question is, will we have enough information to understand how it would affect things as local scale or all over the globe. from that be able to decide is this eve an good idea that idea is controversial since many

experts warn there could be negative impacts from geoengineering projects like this. tests are still in early stages and plan to be in alameda through the summer to collect data. and take you across the bay for a live look at san francisco where restaurant week is fully under way. participating restaurants offering special menus now through next sunday april 14th. offering brunch, lunch or dinner at price points around $10 to $90. san francisco is also celebrating legalized marijuana in the cannabis movement. the mayor kicked off the city's first-ever weed week. >> celebrating sf weed week is like beer week and restaurant week and all of these other things. as a matter of fact, restaurant week and weed week should be at the same time! blackout. millions traveling to see it. hotel prices in the path of totality are up 50% and many hotels sold out. here in the bay area we will only see a partial eclipse. starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends around noon. but there's are plenty of places to watch the historic event. exploratorium museum in san francisco, lawrence hall of science in berkeley and the robert ferguson observatory in sonoma county all holding watch parties starting at 10:00. astronomers are reminding people not to look directly at the sun during the eclipse and use special glasses. if you can't find one in time, there are some other unique items around your house that could help out. >> one of the neat things is, i'm holding up here a pasta strainer with a bunch of holes in it. hold that up. let the sun shine through it down on to a bright surface,

again, 2044. so something exciting that's going on. we're going to bring us back down to earth here and talk about the frost advisory in place until 9:00 a.m. this morning. 34 in santa rosa as well as over in danville and scotts valley, mountains are cold this morning. included in this frost advisory. bundle up if headed out the door and there's lots to do aside from the eclipse, chilly temperatures, also earth month and san jose is hosting an earth day festival later on this morning. temperatures will only be in the 60s today but a mix of sun and clouds. overall keeping the calm and cool temperatures for our saturday plans. do 59 in novato as well as over in dublin and a few low 60s on the map stretching from sand rosa into fairfield and down here in san jose. we won't need the umbrella today. just a nice jacket to keep you warm out there on your saturday, but as we go on into the afternoon, we'll see more cloud cover return and the models are hinting at a little spotty rain

as we go on into our sunday. early morning hours. then into the mid-morning things stay calm but the afternoon we get unsettled and see a few spotty showers as we go on into parts of the north bay, the peninsula, mountains and into parts of east bay as well for the afternoon. then that will be about it. just call it sunday sprinkles to finish off our first weekend of the new month. going ahead into the next week, we are going to be seeing some major changes as we see the dome of high pressure once again return to the bay area, and bring about sunny skies, warmer temperatures. really wednesday and thursday of the upcoming month, feeling like spring. even spots feeling like summer with return of those 70s and those 80s for us. i think the calm weather stays with us as the system just moves around the bay area keeping things sunny and dry for us. overall, san francisco with those temperatures 50s and 60s. should be nice to catch the eclipse on monday morning and then continue to build up from there going into the 60s and 70s

san francisco celebrated reopening of a pair of residential hotels in the city's tenderloin. a welcome reopening in a neighborhood that's become ground zero in the city's drug and homeless crisis. we show you the hotel's long history. >> reporter: on a quarter of san francisco's tenderloin -- you're likely to find the telltale signs of desperation and hopelessness. but on the corner of mason and eddy street is a building long known for offering homes. >> two, one -- >> reporter: mayor london breed cut the ribbon signaling completed renovations of the ambassador and ritz hotels.

two so buildings housing low-income residents. >> lives of the people this will impact. >> reporter: the latest chapter in the long legacy of the ambassador which first became a residential hotel in 1917. but it was in the 1970s the building flung open its doors the widest as thousands of gay men from across the country made their way to san francisco. >> so former kindergarten teacher, hank wilson, decided he was going to make a place for them to go. >> reporter: wilson took over the lease of the ambassador an turned it into a haven for those wayward travelers. >> you found your way into the lobby of the ambassador, a way to get awe room. >> reporter: the welcome mat stayed out even as the aids crisis hit the city. the only hotel that would take those in with hiv and-aids. >> five people died in one day.

good morning. it is saturday april 6th. you're wake wg up to a live look at sassoon bay. thanks for joining us, everyone. i am bigad shaban in for kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us also to talk about the chilly start to your day and just how long is that going to last? >> yeah. talking about a cool weekend morning today and as well as tomorrow. seeing temperatures stick around in the 30s for our sunday as well as we take it outside and look at those current temperatures this morning. waking up to 34 in scotts valley as well as up in calistoga. 45 in hayward and 36 degrees in livermore. areas that are included under this frost advisory. not everybody, like around the coastline and heading towards chilly 50s and low 60s making saturday plans in the inland valleys. it's opening weekend. didn't get a chance to go to the gay yesterday going out tonight at 6:05, first pitch.

bring a lot of layers, temperatures cool and breezy at times. staying dry first half of the weekend. tomorrow a few spotty showers but shouldn't dampen the rest of our weekend plans. then we'll be done with these patterns like this for a while. 70s and 80s return next week. talk about the full microclimate forecast coming up. back to you. >> 30s to 80s. like it. thanks, cinthia. the winterlike weather is whipping up problems across the state in the sierra chain. chain controls in effect on both i-80 and highway 50. wet roads mixed with freezing temperatures are causing icy roads for drivers. in southern california, the grapevine on i-5 is back open after this morning. snow forced chp to shut down the road. video from a couple hours before the closure. you can see low visibility from last night drivers dealt with while there. the road is now back open in both directions. and don't forget. a great way to keep up with the weather is download our free nbc bay area app.

custom weather alerts sent straight to your home and providing the most accurate radar in the bay area. a 70-year-old woman is lucky to be alive this morning after losing control of her car crashing through two fences and ultimately winding up in a canal in contra costa county about five miles east of concord. firefighters got in the water to rescue the woman after a neighbor heard the crash and called 911. traveling westbound on highway 4 in bay point, veered off the road into the contra costa county canal. >> firefighters in floatation devices, had them access the vehicle on ladders, and we broke out the sunroof to make contact with her and then were able to open the driver's door and have her access out of the canal along some ladders we put down. >> firefighters say the woman was conscious, but cold and scared. she was take ton a trauma hospital for possible

hypothermia. highway patrol officers are investigating the latest shooting on a bay area freeway saying one person was hurt after a shooting on the ashby avenue on ramp eastbound 80 just before 5:00 p.m. yesterday. officers found a crashed silver sedan there, which appeared to have been shot prior to the crash. the person driving that sedan was taken to the hospital with injuries. chp says the passenger in that car was not hurt. officers are investigating this as a freeway shooting. chp is searching for the suspect asking anyone there at the time get in touch. >> no matter how little you think that piece of information may be it may be incredibly valuable in our investigation. >> just last week governor newsom announced plans to deploy 480 new licence plate reading cameras around east bay freeways and streets. caltrans tells us while all the cameras are installed, many won't actually be up and running until mid-april. a federal judge is taking

unprecedented action against an east bay women's prison. a special master as its known now appointed to oversee the federal correctional institute in dublin. it marks the first time the bureau of policens subject to this oversight. the same low-security prison you, might remember, where celebrities lori loughlin and felicity huffman did their time for their part in that college admissions scandal. the president dealing with charges of sexual abuse and medical neglect for years. two years ago the previous warden was convicted of sexually abusing three inmates and last year two guards charged with abusing several female inmates. new this morning, two are dead and a police officer among seven people injured following a bar shooting overnight in florida. this began around 3:30 a.m. in a martini bar in the city of doral, in miami-dade county. officials say a security guard was trying to intervene during a

dispute between patrons when one took out a gun and opened fire. the security guard killed and six bystanders also shot. officers responded in exchange gunfire killing the suspect. one of the officers shot taken to the hospital along with the six victims. the investigation is ongoing. one of the most tragic and deadly crimes happened in bay history and now the source of a new lawsuit. a farm worker shot and killed seven people and wounded two others. it happened at two mushroom farms owned by a gardens copy. one pedro perez file add lawsuit yesterday. see him there with attorneys against the farm owners. perez was shot five times. he says he is still recovering. >> i had two bullets in my stomach.

one in my face. one in my arm. and a bullet in my back. >> in california landlords, all landlords, have a duty to protect their tenants from the criminal acts of people who come on to the property. >> attorneys are also filing the lawsuit on behalf of pedro perez's older brother jose who was killed in that mass shooting. the farm owners declined to comment on the lawsuit. horse owners in solano county are under fire after their animals appear to be suffering and malnourished. we learned two of those horses died this week in a criminal animal cruelty investigation that's under way. we have the exclusive story. we warn you, some images will be disturbing. >> they're basic care every animal deserves and i don't sigh see them getting it. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: becca is sickened the way the horses in the

pasture behind her home are being treated. she discovered two horses down. one dead in the field and one so skinny it couldn't stand up. >> she was laying down and she couldn't get back up and she -- she's completely emaciated. >> reporter: solano county animal control got a warrant to go on to the property but the mare was too sick to save. >> tried to give her love so she knee she wasn't awe loan and they euthanized her. i told her her life mattered. >> reporter: animal control confirmed they opened an animal cruelty investigation and gave them 48 hours to get a vet-approved plan. the owner leases the pasture and rarely comes to feed them. >> the pasture is not beal maintained. >> reporter: several of mares appear pregnant and have babies every year. >> stay here until four, six

months old, disappear. come here, take them away. >> reporter: several trying to round up horses's one appeared too weak to run. a woman chased several animals out of a pen forcing one to jump through a fence to get away. they declined to talk to us but loaded two of the animals into a trailer and one driver aggressively swerved towards us trying to block our view as they drove them away. more than a dozen remain in the pasture including one dead one. >> they're watching vultures eat one of their horsemates. bones scattered across the pasture you can see. i would like to see them fed, receiving veterinarian care in homes valued and appreciated for the beautiful creatures they are. >> reporter: in solano county, reporting for nbc news bay area news. it has been more than a week since the key bridge in

baltimore collapsed and a dive team discovered the body of one of the missing construction workers. he was one of eight workers filling potholes on the bridge when it was hit by a cargo ship and plunged into the water. two men rescued and bodies of two other men recovered the next day. in a red pick-up truck trapped ta 25-foot deep water. president biden says his administration is committed to rebuilding the francis scott key bridge. the president got a look at 3d sonar of the underwater damage and briefed on the economic cost of the disaster and met with a line of first responders and families of the victims. they plan to provide limited access container ship by end of the month with normal capacity resuming by the end of next month. turning to decision 2024. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin makes his run official later this morning. ports mouth square he plans to

good saturday morning. 43 past the hour. clear skies make you want to dash out the door, but temperatures say, whoa. hold on a second. 38 in walnut creek right now and chilly low 40s in san jose. we are included under this frost advisory in the south bay. the santa cruz mountains, east bay and north bay, until about 9:00. once we get a little more

sunshine it should help warm things up. keep the blankets on a little longer. i don't blame you. i would want to do the same thing. temperatures low 60s for this afternoon in santa rosa, concord and down here in san jose. chilly 50s along the peninsula and out toward the coast line, but the good news, rain stays away. we get to do the errands and birthday parties under mostly clear skies. staying dry and cool going through our saturday, but then sunday early on in the morning the models are painting just a little bit of those spotty showers. some of it might not even touch the ground and we're measuring these in the hundreds. if that tells you anything, just a little bit to deal with. through the afternoon another chance developing through the north bay spotty as times, santa cruz mountains and santa clara valley and at times breaks in the sunshine for just about everything else. temperatures feeling a little warmer and i don't see the rain impacts us over on the holly festival at bishop ranch in is a

career expo. >> reporter: good morning, bigad. california fire departments are looking for the next generation of firefighters, and, guess what? recruitment in the bay area is starting today. caljack hosting a firefighter career expo in livermore from 11:00 this morning until 2:00. candidates at the event able to network with recruiters ho temperature jump-start their careers. firefighters will share story what's a typical day looks like, and candidates can learn and even attempt the written and physical tests that it takes to become a firefighter. caljack representatives says more firefighters are in high demand. >> yes. firefighters are definitely needed. very much so, which is why so many of the departments that are attending are hiring. so it's amazing, because if you're looking for a job it's really the best place to be, if you really want to get into the career and start your path into the firefighter world. >> the event is completely free

a 70-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after losing control of her car crashing through two fences and ultimately winding up in a canal in contra costa county, five miles east of concord. firefighters got into the water to rescue the woman amp a neighborhood heard the crash and called 911. >> put firefighters in floatation devices had them access the vehicle on ladders, and we broke out the sunroof to make contact with her, and then were able to open the driver's door and have her access out of the canal along some ladders we put down. >> firefighters say the woman was conscious but cold, and scared. she was taken to a trauma hospital for hypothermia. investigating the latest shooting on a freeway. a shooting on the ashby on ramp to eastbound 80 just before 5:00
