all-important path of totality. that's where coverage will reach 100%. it stretches across 15 states. it measures more than 100 miles wide. >> most places will get between 2 and 4 minutes of darkness. many places along the route have become temporary tourist destinations for that very reason. >> and the only thing that can dammen the excitement is, of course, the weather. cloud coverage, maybe some clouds could obscure the phenomenon. >> all right. much like the moon, we've got it all covered. get it? eclipse humor is the best humor, including al's forecast. let's begin with tom costello in indianapolis. the eclipse getting underway there at 3:06 p.m. hi there. we are as geeked out as tom costello is at a space event. >> reporter: we are at the indianapolis motor speedway. we're expecting 50,000 people here from 29 countries, all 50 states, and it is going to be

one of the official nasa locations to watch the eclipse. and purdue university is, of course, the main sponsor. we are expecting great weather here. 70 degrees, blue skies in the sky right now. as you would expect, right now the enthusiasm is building. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: if you have ever experienced a total eclipse. >> oh, my gosh! >> oh! >> look at the structure! >> reporter: it is something you never forget. >> what a great memory it is. oh, my gosh. >> i'm seeing like a moon -- the sun. >> reporter: in 2017, we watched from charleston, south carolina. >> it was just the most spectacular thing i've ever seen in my life. >> reporter: did it live up to expectations? >> absolutely. amazing. >> reporter: now the sun, moon and earth are again coming into alignment. here's what's really cool. the sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, will briefly shine

through. those bubbling shooting streams of plasma are 400 times hotter than the sun itself. >> we don't really appreciate how much the sun is truly the lord of our solar system, how big on the sky it really is until you get to see that corona. >> reporter: the eclipse allows scientists to study the corona. perfect timing because the sun is now at an 11-year peak. it can help them produce future magnetic storms which can disrupt power grids, communications and satellites. >> what we're trying to understand is space weather and the outflow of the weather that affects us here on earth and throughout the solar system. >> reporter: for nasa, a teaching moment. >> viewing any part of the sun without protection even for a short amount of time can cause serious eye damage. >> reporter: 31 million people live within the path of totality. 150 million live within 200 miles.e

eclipses. >> i think it is a little emotional. i mean there are people that, you know, you feel sometimes a tear in your eye tha newton chu and his family have come to indy from hawaii. since 1991, they have seen three eclipses. >> i think it is a little emotional. i mean, there are people that feel it sometimes a little tear in your eye that you're witnessing just some phenomenon of nature. >> reporter: along the path, police expect highway gridlock. >> we were told to compare it to like 30 super bowls letting out at the exact same time. >> reporter: captain kirk, yes, that's his realtime, captain kirk reese. >> don't stop on the highway to do the eclipse. don't stop in the roadways. turn your headlights on. be safe. >> reporter: yeah. don't stop in the roadway to view the eclipse. listen, this may be your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because the next eclipse to come to the united states won't happen for another 20 years, 2044. so get the glasses out and see if you can catch that view of the corona kind of coming around the sides of the moon. should be spectacular. you guys, back to you. >> we listened.

when you ask, we listen. >> i don't see anything. >> okay, good-bye. al is out there on the road. >> yeah. he's at a watch party in dallas. it is the path of totality. al, everybody is wondering about the weather. how is it going to be? >> well, it is going to be kind of interesting. we have kids from the uplift and lamplighters school here, some elementary school students with the perot museum. let's show you the eclipse forecast path. so we are looking at that path starting in texas all the way up to vermont. then as you move further to the north and south of it, the path of totality drops a bit. we're looking at great weather. cloudy skies great lakes to the gulf. east coast looking sunny. along the path, 30% cloud cover in little rock. less in burlington, vermont. where i am in dallas, 60%, but that will be high cloudiness. we will talk about that in the

places, especially to the south, we've got severe weather to talk about. 16 million people at risk for hail, damaging win next half hour. the big problem for a lot of places, especially to the south, we've got severe weather to talk about. 60 million people at risk for hail, damaging winds, tornadoes possible tomorrow from texas on into louisiana. tornados, damaging winds and hail. we move on into wednesday. more severe weather developing further to the east with a big flood risk from texa georgia. for enhanced risks of heavy thunderstorms, tornadoes. we are looking at a flood risk right now, flood watch is possible from texas, louisiana, arkansas, upwards of 8 inches of rain, guys, with this. so once that totality is over, we've got a lot of problems with flooding and severe weather. so we will be watching it all as the day rolls on. in the meantime, we're all excited about this.

can't wait. i have all these kids hopped up on juice and muffins. what could go wrong? >> thank you. >> more expert eclipse viewing perspective from former nasa astronaut joins us from arkansas this morning, one of the best spots to catch a glimpse of the show. mike, good morning. you have been to space many times. you have seen it all. tell us what's special about this particular eclipse? >> well, i think it's something we all can experience as a reminder that we're part of this cosmic dance that goes on in our universe. we don't always realize in our day-to-day life. i realized when i was in space, i could see the sun and the black sky. i could see the moon and the stars. i could look back at the earth and see it rotating. we're part of this system, this cosmic dance that's been going on for billions of years. today is a reminder of that, and we can enjoy it and learn from it right here on planet earth. >> yeah.

this is one of those things. you have seen a lot of these things. there is a lot of gee whiz to it. but is there some science behind it, things we can learn, mike? >> oh, there is a tremendous amount. what's amazing about this, it's very coincidental maybe. but the sun is 400 times further from us than the moon, and it's also 400 times larger. so what that means is that what's happening today when the moon covers the sun perfectly and allows us to see the corona, the scientists to study the corona, the ejections of the plaza from the moon, the space weather that was mentioned in the earlier segment. they can study that today unlike any other time. so we will learn a lot about the sun, about space weather, about our solar system, so it's a great opportunity for scientists to learn. i think it is also a great opportunity for young people. there is a lot of young people at russellville that are very excited. it is a chance to be excited

about science and space and about what might be coming in the future as well. >> it really is remarkable to think about the world and the universe we inhabit. if you are watching the eclipse, you have to have these glasses. not just at that moment but for -- for how long before the actual event should you be putting the glasses on? >> yeah. you should be never looking at the sun without protection. when we were in space, we always had sun protection. we had really dark welders' glasses. when we were doing rendezvous if we had to look into the sun. when i space walked, i had a gold visor i would put down over my face to protect my eyes. you should be wearing those glasses. or used a pin hole camera if you're going to view the eclipse. that means that any time that it is not absolute totality, you need to have those glasses on, protect your eyes from the sun. >> yeah. mike, have fun today. thank you. >> thanks. thanks for having me. >> thank you. we have live coverage of th

and peacock. we will be watching the eclipse together this afternoon. >> a little viewin eclipse that starts at 2:00 eastern. streaming on nbc news now and peacock. we will all get together and be there watching the eclipse together for the special this afternoon. >> a little viewing party. look forward to that. let's turn to a major development in the middle east. with the war entering its seventh month, israel just withdrew a significant number of troops out of gaza ahead of the new round of cease-fire negotiations. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. well, six months into this war, israel is vowing to continue its offensive, while some palestinians are returning to their demolished homes. israeli tanks on the move as the idf announces it's withdrawing its ground forces from southern gaza, focussing instead on holding the northern half of the besieged enclave. six months into the war, shocked palestinians are returning to scenes of devastation in khan yunis. you can't live here. animals can't live here, he

says. the idf says israeli forces left the area to prepare for their future missions, including their mission in rafah. israel has signalled its plan to invade that city. though, president biden warned against a ground invasion there. many palestinians have fled to rafah since the fighting began. mr. biden has also been calling for an immediate cease-fire as part of a hostage deal. there was a new round of hostage talks held sunday in cairo. egyptian media reporting signs of, quote, significant progress. but hamas representatives left the egyptian capital without, they say, any breakthrough. for israelis, hostages are the main concern with another massive rally in jerusalem. calling on their government to do more to get them out. this woman telling her husband, who is still being held, that she loves

him. and then screams, enough! the israeli military, though, says this troop drawdown is not an end of the war in gaza. we are far from stopping, idf chief of staff said sunday. the head of hamas are still hiding. we will reach them sooner or later. well, we are now waiting on an in-person meeting between israeli and u.s. officials. a national security council spokesperson john kirby says they were trying to narrow down a schedule for that to take place and discuss next steps. hoda? >> all right. thank you. we've got much more to get to. we welcome in craig. good morning. >> good morning. good morning to you as well. folks, there has been yet another scare involving a boeing 737. this time a southwest flight was forced to make an emergency landing after part of an engine

moment caught by passengers. nbc's sam brock has that story. good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. the video tells quite the story. that southwest flight you mentioned was going denver t cover tore off. check out the video here. the moment caught on camera by several passengers. nbc's sam brock joins us with that story. sam, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. the video there tells quite the story. that southwest flight you mentioned was going from denver to houston on sunday when passengers noticed part of the cover around the engine twisting off and whipping in the wind, ultimately hitting the wing flap. passengers we spoke with said about 30 minutes later, the plane was able to land at denver international airport where it was then towed back to the gate. this morning, the faa investigating the surreal sight that left passengers onboard southwest flight 3695 terrified. >> oh, it fell off. >> reporter: those on board witnessing the plane's calling -- wcoweling or metal covering that covers the engine appearing to peel of

>> reporter: roughly 30 to 45 minutes later the plane was back on the ground, and passenger frank sanger as the aircraft headed down the runway for takeoff. the boeing 737 scheduled to fly from denver to houston sunday had to turn back. >> let's go ahead and declare an emergency. we have a piece of engine coweling hanging off apparentli. >> reporter: the plane was back on the ground and passenger frank sanger says he was surprised by what he saw upon de-planing. >> you could see the jet engine had a panel stripped away all the way around. >> reporter: the faa issuing a statement saying in part the pilot reported the engine coweling fell off during takeoff and struck the wing flap. the faa will investigate. while the plane is manufactured by boeing, the engine is not. it's unclear what caused the malfunction, but southwest has recently experienced a series of runway scares, including a possible engine fire on sunday -- on thursday that grounded a flight in texas. it also comes amid sky high scrutiny. united airlines planes have had a number of safety issues including eight incidents in two weeks. in a memo last month, united telling its employees the faa

would be growing its presence at the company. meanwhile, boeing is facing investigations from the justice department, ntsb and faa after the alaska airlines door plug blowout after questions of quality control breakdowns. their ceo announcing at the end of the month he's stepping down at the end of the year but remaining on as the company makes changes. aviation experts, guys, say that incidents like these of calling -- coweling covers coming off actually are not that rare and really should not be overly alarming. they remind passengers there are tens of thousands of commercial flights every single day and incidents like that are rarely catastrophic. >> okay. sam, thank you. 7:18. let's check in with al who has the forecast and the countdown to the eclipse. you have a nice party down there, al. >> we sure do. all the kids from the latchlighter uplift school. let's show you what we've got as far as your weather is concerned today.s developing through

the prime viewing spots for this morning's solar eclipse, which will begin around 10:15 at the lawrence hall of science, they're hosting a viewer party and so is the chabot space and science center. unfortunately, that one is sold out. there are other viewing parties going on. >> bob mentioned the viewing parties. that includes the exploratorium and the california academy of sciences and the lawrence hall of science in berkeley. if you live in the north bay, you can head to the robert ferguson observatory in kenwood. there's not a lot to see in regards to the eclipse when it comes to the bay area, kari. >> you know, sometimes we get a lot of clouds, but it is a clear start for us as we take a look around the bay area. also chilly, temperatures in the low 40s, and we'll see a high temperature in the low 70s for today. a significant warm-up compared to the weekend. and that continues throughout

officials in dozens of states telling residents to be ready. >> it's going to mean a substantial increase in track volume. >> pack your patience along with snacks and water and make sure you have a full tank of gas. >> reporter: if you happen to be on the road when the sun and moon align, transportation officials say drivers should expect heavy traffic and sudden stops. be on the lookout for distracted pedestrians, and keep those emergency lanes clear. >> safety first, eclipse second. >> reporter: for those lucky enough to get a glimpse of the astronomical event, it's critical to make sure you have the proper protective eyewear. the better business bureau issuing a warning about fake eclipse glasses. to spot the difference, make sure your lenses have a curved reflective design in the front. and look for the correct iso certification logo on the inside. not this one seen on some fakes. >> verifying how good these glasses are and who you're buying them from is really important. >> reporter: as for our four-legged friends, experts say pets will probably be unfazed.

still, to mitigate stress levels during the eclipse, experts suggest keep your animal away from large crowds. while it's unlikely they'll look directly into the sun, remember a pet's eyes can be just as easily damaged as a human's. at the dallas zoo, animals will be watched closely for any strange behavior. >> to make sure that the animals are safe and they're not responding in an extreme way. >> reporter: experts expect birds to go eerily silent during the blackout. and primates may begin their nighttime routines a bit early. while dramatic changes are still unlikely, zookeepers are ready to respond if anything gets a bit too wild. and zookeepers stress they don't anticipate really anything unusual other than birds maybe going home to roost during that moment of totality. but here in kerrville, officials are stressing people need to be in their eclipse watching places by 10:00 a.m., hours before that

big event takes place. and guys, i got it down to the second. 1:32:07 local time, that is when the moon will completely obscure the sun here in the texas hill country. we do have a little cloud cover ongoing, but as anyone can attest who's witnessed texas weather, there's plenty of time left. back to you. >> morgan, thank you. let's bring in nbc's vicky nguyen and dr. joan torres -- john torres. what if you don't have special glasses? obviously don't look at the sun, is there any way to see it? >> you want to wear special glasses they. are solar protective glasses. even if you have eyeglasses, put them over top of your eyeglasses. that way. essentially it's on -- put these right over top of them. >> hold them. >> right. the main thing is there's no pain receptors in your retina, the back of the eyeball. that sun could hit the retina even if there's just a slight percentage of openness in the sun, you want to be careful. it can burn -- you might not find out for a couple of days that it burns there, and you could have symptoms from that,

away for free. there is a way to watch the call ahead because a lot of places are sold out. if you have a warby parker, they're giving these away for free. if you can't get your hands on these glasses, there's a way to watch indirectly. i'll show three things you can do prosecute basic to more advance -- from basic to more advanced. you take an index card, poke a pinhole. will you be my sun? all you do is literally make the sun be behind you and shine from the pin hole onto a card or on to the ground. the moment the moon covers the sun you'll see the crescent and shape. the other way, next, you take a box, cut two holes in the box. put a piece of white paper at the end, and right here is where you look through. and this is where you cover it either with the paper or foil. again that pinhole and look into the box, it will be cool. it will be tiny, but you'll see it. finally a picture of what we did in in california. we took a big box. look at that. on the left is what you see -- those are pinholes in the shape of the 2017. they're little half moons. at the moment when the moon was covering the sun. >> oh. >> my husband did it. >> very cool.

[ cheers ] >> here at the perot museum. and cloud don't mean you're not going to see it. let's see exactly what we mean. the kind of clouds that make a difference. so down in austin, they've got a lot of low clouds. that's going to block it. dallas, we've got more high clouds. so we'll probably get some of that eclipse effect. we move on to the midwest. you'll see again low clouds, not so bad for indianapolis. same in cleveland. high clouds, yes, but again, you'll see the eclipse. then as we move into the northeast, nothing. buffalo, a lot of low clouds. burlington, vermont, though, high clouds. that's much better for you. the effects you'll feel during the eclipse, you will notice the temperature drop anywhere from five to ten degrees. humidity level will drop, as well. look for relative humidity

good morning. it is 8:26. i'm marcus washington. so on the central coast today convoys are expected to continue helping locals and tourists trapped one week after shifting terrain destabilized an area underneath highway 1, closing that roadway. this is near rocky creek in

monterey county. caltrans says engineers are keeping an eye on the roadway just to make sure it is safe enough for convoys to pass through. they're also working on a plan to temporarily stabilize the area. let's get a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the temps. >> it's going to be warming up after a chilly start. take a look at our highs this afternoon. upper 60s and low 70s, and that warming trend continues over the next few days. we'll be in the upper 70s tomorrow, parts of the south bay into the north bay, while san francisco will reach into the upper 60s and low 70s by wednesday. we're seeing some spots reaching up to 82 degrees. and we'll also have some warm weather for thursday, but then friday already it starts to cool down and we will have a chilly weekend, off and on rain in the forecast, especially for saturday. and that may continue into sunday as well. big changes as we go throughout the week, especially with our temperatures, marcus. >> thanks, kari. we'll have another local news

local news and weather. ♪♪ good morning. 8:56, i'm marcus washington. well, excitement is building ahead of today's rare solar eclipse. the path of totality will span along southern mexico through northeastern united states and into canada. it will happen over a period of several hours. here in the bay area, we'll get 35 percentage partial eclipse and maximum coverage happening a little after 11:00 a.m. you may notice the skies darken just a little bit and you may actually see evidence of a partial eclipse by looking at shadows on the ground. if you plan to view the sky make sure you're wearing the special eclipse glasses. happening now in our area, the moon should start to block pat of the sun within a little more than an hour.
