right now it 6:00, the war in the middle east expands. the latest on the growing conflict and have united states is responding. businesses in san francisco are blaming a bike lane for slow business and one owner is using a hunger strike to draw attention to the issue. we had a wet and chilly start to the weekend. strong rains in the bay area and snow in the sierras. you can see raindrops, clouds from san francisco down to san jose. these current conditions, how long will they last? >> well, i am here to help you

time and allow. we are seeing some afternoon showers at the moment. campbell is seeing some heavy returns along highway nine and up towards the peninsula and the east bay shoreline and into san francisco, across the bay bridge. be careful with the changes on the roadway. even through parts of the north bay extending to 37 and out towards solano county. it is breaking apart just a little bit. we started off with a really stormy start to the weekend. up towards fairfield, and more. you will need your jacket and umbrellas of for one more day as we track isolated storm areas. next week the sunshine is back. 70s and 80s. we will talk about the full forecast coming up.

people living in big sur were forced to stay home during the rain again. today convoys out of the area have been canceled. the storm last month washed away part of the scenic highway which is basically the only way in or out of the area. since then caltrans is doing twice daily convoys. convoys and start tomorrow again at noon and they hope to return to normal on monday. in the sierra, light snow. this is donner summit on i-80. no chain controls in effect and light snow. you can track the rain on the go by downloading our free nbc bay area app point your phone camera at that qr code and that will take you right to the app. we have breaking news on the tensions over israel.

israeli officials say i ran launched more -- i run launched -- it is about 4:00 in the morning on sunday and air raid sirens are sounding in cities across israel. new videos across jerusalem show the sky lit up with orange flares. rockets appeared to be taking out iranian drones. most of the missiles were intercepted outside of the israel border. the u.s. has shut down several iranian drones. this is in retaliation to a strike on the consulate in syria. that killed two top commanders from tehran. president biden is heading back to the white house to be with the national security team. there was a two hour long meeting in the situation room

that wrapped up a few hours ago. u.s. government employees and their families in israel are being told to stay put until further notice. jordan has closed airspace tonight. it is expected that many of the drones launched from iran flyover jordan on the way to israel. this is another look at tel aviv. benjamin netanyahu is saying that he is convening his war management cabinet. we should note that they say that the matter can be deemed concluded and they will only attack again if israel retaliates. our nbc news team is monitoring the situation closely. our free nbc bay area app is a great resource to have we can send updates right to your phone. a new twist in the controversy of the former mayor of windsor and sexual assaults allegations.

some of the women involved are blasting prosecutors for suspending the investigation. lawyers for the victims want to know why the accounts of 15 women are not enough to bring criminal charges. >> the reality is that the state of california is saying that there is compelling evidence from multiple sources on 15 separate accounts but he is about to walk free. as women we need more voices because this is not enough in the state of california. >> we reached out to his attorney today but have not heard back. previously has denied all allegations. several east bay

firefighters responded to a call for help and ended up in the hospital. this was on southbound 680 in walnut creek. the crew was responding to a crash when a car hit their truck. two people in the car were badly hurt. paramedics rushed him to the hospital and firefighters were also taken to the hospital. a fire truck was hit not once but twice while responding to another crash on 680. no firefighters were hurt but you can see the engine had to be towed. the department will use a reserve engine. the cause of that crashes under investigation. a new turn in the battle regarding bike lanes in valencia. some say it is impacting business. one merchant is on a hunger strike to bring attention to the issue. >> i am doing a hunger strike for 30 days. just water and juice sometimes. >> reporter: he is going to

great lengths to bring attention to the debate over bike lanes in valencia. his family owns a restaurant. >> the problem is the bike lane. >> reporter: it is part of a pilot project to protect cyclists. >> they took away street parking and they meted the commercials on. >> reporter: and that is not the only issue. so far, reaching out to the city has not amounted to much. >> customers don't want to come here because there is no parking. people ask me what to do and it is very frustrating. >> reporter: he says he is seeing changes along the corridor. >> five businesses last week closed. >> reporter: the bike lanes run up the center of the street and cars use the outer lanes. we asked bicyclist about the experience. >> i use it twice a weekend it is working really well for me.

in general, i feel safer. >> i do like the lanes. i come and go to work on these lanes and they think they are very helpful. >> reporter: another cyclist is says he does not like the lanes and does not use them. it is hard to tell how much they contributed to changes along the corridor but david quimby says he has had to close his venue in november. >> our numbers are growing. >> reporter: and one man is asking the city -- >> please take out the bike lane and figure out a better way. >> reporter: in a statement sf mta plans to continue to collaborate to work on some solutions that best protect both businesses and cyclists on the corridor. from the corridor i am christie smith, nbc bay area news.

google is saying they are removing links to a california news website in response to a state bill. the journalism preservation act would require technology giants like google, facebook, and microsoft to pay news organizations a journalism usage fee. the idea is that technology companies make money from articles that help them make money but the platforms don't pay the journalist or the news organizations who then miss out on the advertising revenue generated by their work. the proposed law would create a level of business uncertainty they feel that no company could accept. the company is removing news links for a small number of californians is a test. coming up, the bay area honors cesar chavez. we take a look at his lights work. it is gloomy and cold in

o'shaughnessy boulevard. firefighters say there was just one person in the car and they are expected to be okay. one lane was closed while they cleaned up the scene. today san francisco is honoring the legacy of cesar chavez. the city held its annual march for the late activist today. it was followed by his festival in the mission district that just wrapped up a short time ago. they are recognizing the contributions of cesar chavez in the community. one mayoral candidate introduced a new way to honor the legacy. he wants the city to officially recognize march 31 as cesar chavez day. >> i think it is about diversity, inclusion, fighting for workers and it is part of a larger tradition and what something cisco is about. it is about fighting for the people. >> state and federal governments

recognize cesar chavez day on march 31. no at 6:00 and non-profit is working to improve housing stability. habitat for humanity shut off esperanza plaza. it is 23 affordable homes built in collaboration with families that will occupy them. these are families that have been priced out of bay area housing. they hope this will give these people hope for the future. >> the habitat families that move in here are educated and they are stable. we find the kids, when they grow up, we find they don't need habitat. the cycle is broken. they are functioning humans who get to go out and live productive lives. >> habitat is working on a second phase of the community this summer that will include 19 more affordable homes.

it felt the touch like winter today but san francisco is welcoming spring with the 57th annual cherry blossom festival. thousands of people flocked to japan town today for the festival. it is a weeklong celebration of japanese and japanese-american culture featuring live performances, a tea ceremony and many other traditions. it culminates with the parade next sunday afternoon. >> it is a great way to experience japanese culture. some people think it is just anime or pop music but it is so much more than that. >> check this out. is that a familiar face? olympic figure skating champion and hayward needed -- native,

christie yamaguchi stopping by. she is just everywhere and we will be seeing more and more of her as we get closer to the olympics. right now we just have a lot of raindrops on the windshield. >> next weekend i think is going to be really nice. so, we have some rain to deal with right now though. the camera network is picking up on soggy conditions. if it is not raining it is cold. at 47 in walnut creek. low 50s through the south bay. it is an extensive system through the central valley so we have the mountain snow and we have it all throughout california right now. we will continue to watch the rain chances as we make evening plans. not a bad idea to take the rain

jacket with you and an umbrella. we will keep our eye on rain showers that are offshore with chances of thunderstorms in their too as we go into late this evening. parts of the coastline from half moon bay down the central coast will see that. we will get a few more showers overnight through the south bay and then wake up and enjoy the first half of sunday with calming conditions but then we get more afternoon showers developing going into the northbay. that will go through the mount hamilton range. late sunday and monday we have more clearing on the way and that will develop gradually as we go into the next work week. in lake tahoe it is 36 degrees and wind around 20-30 miles per hour so it is pretty gusty. it will not be a major storm system this weekend. we are talking about 1-2 inches

through the rest of the weekend and monday looks to be a good day to come back or maybe even extend your ski time there. there is a cherry blossom festival continuing in san francisco tomorrow and it will be gloomy skies and overcast but no rain to put a damper on the plans out there in the city. the bay fc game looks pretty pleasant but temperatures will cool down into the evening and the wind is around 5-15 miles per hour but overall it will be a good time. over the next couple of days we will be on a roller coaster again. in livermore we will go from 60s and cool and gloomy winter to the middle of spring by next week and then almost summer- like by thursday. we will continue to cruise in this nice weather over the next couple of days. the extended forecast is showing us the rain will stay away next weekend so we just have to keep going through this

caught it's better late than never. one book, 105 years late rather than never. the book "ivanhoe" was recently returned after being checked out in a 1919. the library said the novel was checked out three times before it went missing. whoever had it, loved it and made notes in the margins and it was passed down through several generations. an anonymous woman turned in and after it was found in her mother's belongings. adjusting for inflation, the late fee is $14,000. but no penalties here. no one knows who brought it back but it is just one more story to add. >> that book probably cost like five cents back then. >> probably. so, anthony flores.
