seven people have now been seated on the jury. the process has not been simple, with some potential jurors confronted over their social media activity. and the judge scolding the former president about his behavior in court. nbc's laura jarret kicks off our coverage. >> reporter: seven jurors have now been chosen to sit in judgment of former president trump, who left for the courthouse, then closely watching what one juror, whowas dismissed, described as a surreal selection process. >> but it's like, oh, this is just another guy, and also he sees me talking about him, which is bizarre. >> reporter: of those selected so far, a salesperson, an oncology nurse, two attorneys, an i.t. consultant, a teacher and software engineer. the slow-moving vetting process springing into an animated focus-group-like atmosphere with nearly two dozen manhattan residents offering unvarnished views of the presumptive gop nominee to his face under

questioning by the prosecution and defense. one man calling mr. trump fascinating and mysterious. one revealing he was a big fan of the "apprentice" in middle school. a woman saying he speaks his mind, and i'd rather that than someone in office who you don't know what they're thinking. and a fourth prospective juror saying i'm a democrat, so there you go. but i walk in there, and he's a defendant, and that's all he is. the defense team raising successful objections to a hand fm h hand fm handful by pointing to social media posts, including one that said "lock him up". he is accused of directing michael cohen to make hush money

payments. >> it's called legal expenses. that's what you're supposed to call it. nobody has ever seen anything like it. >> reporter: meanwhile, in washington, the supreme court's conservative majority appearing skeptical of a federal obstruction law that could affect some charges mr. trump faces in a different criminal case. the case in front of the justices about a former police officer who wants charges stemming from his participation in january 6 dropped. the same law mr. trump has been charged with in his election interference case. but some of the justices pressing the government to explain whether the law could unfairly sweep up those engaged in legitimate protests. >> what happened on january 6 was very, very serious. but we need to find out what are the outer reaches of this statute under your interpretation. >> reporter: now that seven jurors have been officially sworn in and empaneled in this case we now move to get the full 12 seated.

additional batches will be brought in on thursday at 9:30. back to you. >> laura, thank you. house speaker mike johnson is pushing ahead with his plan for passing foreign aid. johnson wants to hold separate votes for aid for ukraine and israel. members of johnson's own party are revolting over the strategy. kentucky congressman thomas massie says he will co-sponsor a resolution to remove johnson as speaker. johnson called the motion absurd and said he will not resign. some democrats suggested they would vote to keep johnson in office to avoid the disruption of another search for a speaker. western allies continue to keep a close eye on israel as leaders mull over a response to iran's military attack. they expect israel seas's respoo be limited.

but they caution plans could still change. this comes as the u.s. announced plans to impose sanctions against iran and supporters of the islamic revolutionary guard corps. nbc's claudio lavanga joins us live for more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. on tuesday, national security advisor jake sulg livan said in statement the u.s. will introduce new sanctions against iran and entities that support the revolutionary guards. he also said the u.s. military will reenforce existing missile defense and warning systems that are already in place across the middle east in order to limit the effectiveness and the danger of missiles and drones. all this at the same time here across the atlantic here in the european union, joseph burrell, who is in charge of foreign affairs here says the eu as well will reenforce, so they're

united in reinforcing their own sanctions against iran. in the meantime, israel insists they will retaliate against iran. daniel hagari, the spokesperson for the israeli defense forces said they will retaliate at a time and manner of its own choosing. he also said that the response, the defensive response against iran's attack on saturday was amazing but also that israel cannot stand still against iran's aggression and said that iran, and i quote, will not get away with it with it scot-free. the tension in the middle east has caused controversy at the university of southern california. usc has canceled their valedictorian's graduation speech. at least two pro-jewish groups

complained for her post about the abolishment of the state of israel. >> the university has to make a decision about whether this valedictorian and her propagation of anti-semitic vitriol online is worthy of being the representative of the class of 2024. >> she says she is disappointed that the school is succumbing of what she called a campaign of hate meant to silence her voice. usc said the decision is only about campus safety, not free domfreedom of speech. a 211-mile road would run through a national park and be a first step toward accessing a copper deposit worth over $7 billion. two sources with knowledge tell the "times". the interior department plans to reject the project on the grounds that it would hurt

convicted in the 2002 murders of his wife laci peterson and their unborn child. he's serving life without parole, this after his original death sentence was overturned by the cat the california supreme court. but they say the evidence shows that laci's killer could have been burglars that broke in to a house across the street. and a burned mattress that they say could have laci's blood on it found in a burned-out van. the investigator says he didn't know about the mattress but is skeptical it could be related to the murders. >> i think there is a possibility, but it's like the possibility of the sun rising in the west tomorrow. >> reporter: peterson facing an uphill battle to earn a new
