weather, from 60s to snow and now we are seeing the 40s and 50s. we have areas of patchy fog stretching in through portions of san francisco up through parts of the north bay and stretching through parts of the east bay. that's not going to linger for long. we will see that warm up and then we will get, of course, fantastic temperatures. right now it's about 52 degrees in san francisco. one thing i want you to notice are the icons. we are going to get high clouds rolling in at times, and the temperatures will be the 60s and bumping up into the 70s. 77 by 1:00. mike, how are the roads doing? >> not as good as the temperatures, but it's a thursday so we typically see things easing off at the end of the week for the morning commute, but there's building on

the bay bridge. there are reports of a minor crash on the sole dur out of oakland. we are looking at another minor crash in concord. new affects for 242 as far as we can see. the altamont pass remains the only slowing for west 580. a crash at grant line road is being taken care of now, but there's the build across the san mateo dumbarton bridge, your usual pattern. >> thank you. oakland police has shot and killed a murder suspect. bob redell has been live at the scene all morning. are police telling you anything else, bob? >> reporter: good morning, laura. the shooting took place at that house there, three houses down to the left, and there's a police officer still parked out

front and is waiting for a private crime scene company to finish their job, and they are awaiting for the coroner to arrive before, and the coroner has arrived and taken away the body. oakland police tell us just before 9:30 last night it was sacramento police who located a suspect here who committed a murder in their jurisdiction. san francisco police notified opd and they requested oakland police send out officers to help arrest the suspect. oakland police department said when the officers arrived, the suspect came out with agun, and they shot the suspect and no officers were hurt. the officers that fired their guns is on administrative leave. and the shooting is being investigated by internal affairs

and the oakland police review agency. >> we will continue to monitor the breaking news on air and online. a great resource to stay up-to-date is our nbc bay area app. it's free and available to download. happening today, sfmta is imposing a redesign where a family died. an suv slammed into the west portal bus stop killing a couple and their children. changes would include a protected pedestrian place and adding foliage around the bus stop. community advocates believe it's a step in the right direction. >> i'm glad to see the city taking quick action to transform the area around the west portal station to make it safer for all people, especially children and families and seniors and people with disabilities who walk or

take transit or bike. >> the designs are public on the sfmta website, and the agency is asking for any feedback by april 28th. once that design is finalized it will go before the board for the final approval. the goal is to have that project completed by the summer of 2025. into the news room, some rights groups today plan to seek a reform. prop 47 loosens sentencing for repeat theft and drug trafficking offenders. organizers months ago said the new measure would improve safety and get offenders into drug treatment programs. that announcement is scheduled for 10:30 this morning. the gop nominee for

president, former president donald trump, returns to court today. this comes as jury selection in the hush-money trial is expected to enter the final stretch. brie, where does that process stand now? >> seven jurors have been picked so far, and they include a nurse, a software engineer and information technology professional, somebody in sales and an english teacher and two lawyers. 11 more people must be sworn in. the judge anticipates the opening statements in the landmark case to be given next week. many of the jurors have been questioned about their social media posts, personal lives and political views. trump stands accused of falsifying business records and

paying to silence adult film star, stormy daniels, in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. >> here we are, six months to go until the presidential election, and there are polls about the trial and other criminal trials involving the former president. >> yeah, 35% of voters think trump did something illegal regarding the allegations he covered up the hush-money payments. meanwhile, 50% say if convicted he would not be fit for office. that's just one of his criminal cases. let's take a look at the other three. this includes his election interference case in georgia, and allegations he tried to overturn the 2020 election results, and accusations involving his handling of classified documents. while over 50% of the voters

believe he would not be fit for office if convicted in those cases, and it's important to note that the numbers also indicate a few of those surveyed are confident prosecutors are treating trump fairly nor do they believe the supreme court, other judges or jurors could be impartial in his cases. >> we will see on election day, how those voters really feel. i want to talk about president biden. he's getting a big endorsement. talk to us about that. >> more than a dozen members of the kennedy family will endorse president biden for a second term today, and that decision means they are not going to endorse kennedy jr. who is running as a third party candidate. democrats worry that robert f. kennedy jr.'s bid could pose a

spoiler risk that could hand the election to former president trump. the family members will formerly make an endorsement of biden. biden this week has been campaigning in pennsylvania, which is seen as a critical swing state in 2024. marcus? >> biden and trump have been there recently. brie jackson in washington for us this morning. brie, thank you. new at 6:00, more californians will be losing home insurances. two more insurers withdraw from the state. two companies insured more than 12,000 homeowner policies with more than $11 million in premiums. neither disclosed the reasons for leaving. they will send nonrenewable notices in july, and it comes as

state farm stopped writing policies in the state. and then let's look at what we can expect for the temperatures throughout the day and this week. i'm loving it. >> the same. we have the planner to showcase just how the temperatures will stretch out over the span of your afternoon. 9:00 a.m. in oakland, 61 degrees. look at this, 70s for oakland. that's not going to be the only nice weather. here's san josé. 1:00, 2:00, we will inch near the 80s, and we will climb to 88 degrees for a lot of the interior valleys. also, through parts of the interior, concord, by 11:00, we are already going to be at the 70-degree mark and bumping up into the upper 70s eventually with a mix of cloud cover.

let's look at the gas prices. >> yeah, i notice the gas prices really jumped up, holding this week, fremont has the best price in the state. it's an outlier, though, 4.34, and the price for alameda, 60 cents higher than the rest of the bay area. the same in marin county, we find the same, 4.99. the only station below 5 bucks. no major issues, and a smooth drive into livermore. we have about half an hour drive out of contra costa county heading south on 580 out of alameda county. a nice drive across the san mateo bridge. >> thank you, mike. the oakland zoo is saying good-bye to bison.

it is 6:15 right now on this thursday morning. a live look in san josé. 50 degrees. wind speeds are calm and temperatures are going to be on the climb. by 12:00, expect daytime highs to boost into the 70s. another warm afternoon. what can we expect for the weekend? i have that answer for you, coming up. look at the bay bridge. we have movement. it's a slightly lighter volume of traffic here. it's moving well, although there's the traffic coming out of the maze. we will show you the traffic out of the north coming up. happy thursday to you. the biggest business story so far this week has been jay powell's comments that the fed will not lower interest rates anytime soon. he didn't say that exactly, and fed chairs never say anything

exactly, but that's the gist of it. 23andme, the bay area dna testing company filed paperwork that allowed it to come off the market, and the nasdaq is close to kicking this off the exchange anyway. this is the actual share price. and then google moving some jobs overseas, and it fired 28 employees that took part in a protest over the company's contract to provide cloud computing over to the israel military. tesla made a mistake when calculating severance packages for some of the employees it laid off. the ceo elon musk said, as we reorganize tesla it has come to

my attention that some severance packages are incorrectly low. my apologies for this mistake and it's being corrected immediately. musk has been accused of failing to pay millions of dollars in promise severance for twitter employees when he bought the company. the house could get a tiktok bill as soon as this weekend. as you know, there's legislation on capitol hill to force tiktok's parent, bytedance, to sell to an american company. speaker johnson is considering bundling that bill into the aid bills. in the meantime, there's a question as to who would buy

tiktok? former treasury secretary, steve mnuchin said he was putting together a coalition of investors to buy tiktok. it would have to be a giant company on the level of microsoft. a lot of companies are not interested, partially, because, let's say facebook bought it. they would be worried the u.s. government would say, no, you have too many communications and it's a monopoly so stay out of it. >> there's potential there, because advertisers, and -- >> yeah, it's huge. it's gigantic. >> a lot of people left, but a lot of people are on there. >> small businesses, that's how they are making money. a lot of people are leaving california, and now the oakland

zoo is sending bison to montana. the zoo partnered with tribes. the zoo selected 11 bison to be part of an out breeding program. now 14 bison born at the zoo will make that trip and leave next week. two dogs are now safe at home after being rescued in san francisco. this happened last night before 7:00. one of the dogs needed a special harness to bring him up to safety. no dogs were hurt. how did they get down there? that's the question. >> curious dogs. one hollywood a-lister -- >> trading the big screen for a daredevil role in real life.

and clouds, but out in the pacific, we have where we normally see the storms forming, that's going to have cloud cover that will ease some of the 80s, but it will be enough to dip us down into the cold weather. san francisco, once again, bumping up to 71 and down through parts of morgan hill, san martin and gilroy, we are going to be in the upper 70s. today will be one of the warmer days searching towards the weekend, because by tomorrow we have the influence of cooler air, and that will be more seasonable for spring, in the 70s. high pressure, here it is. this big "h" has been keeping us dry and warm. the long-range outlook, of course, we want to look ahead and make sure just in case we are planning something in the upcoming days, into wednesday, april 24th. we are monitoring for a potential of a system making an

approach and bringing us a chance of rain by thursday, but we are still far out and we will know more as we inch closer. i want to show you how we are in the sierra snowpack. statewide average, 111%. typically with the warmer months, what we tend to see is a lot of the snowpack tends to melt and we need enough time for it to sink into the ground water as well. a stunning weekend ahead into friday, saturday and sunday. check out the inland daytime highs in the 70s. by next wednesday, we will cool down into the 60s as we watch out for that rain. we have a build out of richmond across the bridge in san rafael. no drama, just slowing down the east shore freeway. tri-valley looks great. slowing off the castro valley y. south 880 shows volume but no

morning. it's a good reminder for us that we have to be prepared for the next major earthquake. >> reporter: absolutely. we are now at the part of the ceremony where anybody that wants to spray the fire hydrant, they can paint the hydrant. the significance of the hydrant is it was able to help firefighters save the mission district. we are just getting news that several insurance companies may be pulling out of san francisco over the risk of earthquake-induced fires. of course, this is critical. we know san francisco was not just devastated by an earthquake, but devastated by

was dedicated to dianne feinstein. a lot of work has gone into retro fitting these buildings, making sure some of the buildings that have been around since the earthquake, making them safer, and the skyline standards have changed, but there's a new push to find buildings that have static and concrete building materials that gives it no flex in the earthquake, and the city identified 3,000 buildings to get in and retro fit so they can stand in the future. we have a whole list of ways to get prepared for the earthquake, and it's narcotic whether there will be another earthquake, but when and then how will you be prepared.

rally. google putting its foot down after a protest staged this week by workers opposing israel's war in gaza. a new memo indicates the company terminated 28 employees in sunnyvale and new york. police made arrests in one top executive's office. protesters were calling out google for its partnership with israel's military, and google says that investigation is ongoing and the protesters may still face trespassing charges. and then talking about ongoing efforts to ease the housing crunch, and bonta will visit fruitvale transit village. construction crews are still in the process of building a new

president joe biden will get an endorsement today from members of one of america's political dynasties. >> there's a kennedy running against president biden. >> this is a vote of confidence coming from the kennedy family,

and a vote of condemnation of the nephew of john f. kennedy, and he's running as an independent in the upcoming presidential election. much of his extended family, including his own sister, will gather in philadelphia today to say it's biden that should be elected as president again. this is video of the president yesterday with steel workers in pittsburgh. polls show robert kennedy can't win the presidency but can play the spoiler. in elections in which a third-party candidate ran, that candidate drew votes away from the incumbent. moments ago we learned the judge excused one of the jurors

already seated after she raised concerns if she could be impartial, and we have not heard why. former president trump was complaining that they were not given unlimited strikes against people they don't like, but the number is ten, and they each got ten. as you will recall, a house brings an impeachment, the charges, and the senate holds the trial, except not this time. both sides of angry about the whole thing. both sides have a reasonable point. the democrats say you didn't actually accuse mayorkas of a high crime so we will not have a trial. republicans are saying, find him not guilty, but have the trial. >> we have made it clear, clear,

that you don't use policy disagreements for impeachment. i don't care who it is, president, cabinet second or anyone else. >> chuck schumer voted on party lines to not even allow the american people to evaluate the evidence is shameful and i think there will be a reckoning in the fall. >> what the speaker is not mentioning, the republicans voted to dismiss the cases against trump in the same way, and they said they should not impeach somebody with only seven days left of the term. as for the criminal trial, that is back underway in a short time from now. more jurors to select for today and tomorrow, and the judge expect opening arguments on

formerly incarcerated people. it will create jobs for the former inmates. >> we are really working to demonstrate that recidivism, and we had 80 full-time employees that were formerly incarcerated. >> since 2009, planting justice planted more than 250 gardens in the bay area alone. yesterday it began planting the first trees for its new farming site. as you know, some of the trees can take years and years to grow, so protecting that will be important. if you want to celebrate in person, there are different events happening this weekend leading up to earth day on monday. on saturday, there's a tree

this time because of the pollinators, the bees and the butterflies, and they are looking at those dead flowers to pollinate the new flowers. right now the temperatures are pleasant, in the 40s and 50s. the high pressure has done such a fantastic job of warming us up. we will see one more day in the 80s. concord, fairfield and around the city, we will be in the 70s. even san francisco has had above-average weather. by tomorrow we are going to cool off just a bit as high pressure dominates, and we will get the influence of a little cooler air mass settling in. it will keep us in the 70s and bring down the 80s. high pressure will remain in the forecast through friday and saturday. notice the rain activity up
