breaks down the dire situation off the california coast with our climate in crisis intensifying. this is "today in the bay." good friday morning to you. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we're going to get a look at the morning commute in just a bit. first, let's talk about the forecast. looking good? >> it really is. if there was a way to celebrate spring, it's always with comfortable 70s and that's what we're going to get. right now we're in the 50s, if you look at your live cameras, a cloudy start. if you notice, the wind speeds calm. so wind not a factor on this friday morning. but your temperature trend will include some areas of cloud cover, at least through about 9:00 a.m. for areas like san rafael, we're at about 54 degrees. but the icons will eventually clear out and we've got a lot of sunshine in store for you all. we've got 60s at around 12:00 for san rafael.

a lot of these interior areas will bump into the mid to upper 70s and that will be nice to enjoy. i'll give you a closer look at the extended forecast. first, let's check in with mike. >> we continue with this major issue for the tri-valley. southbound 680 effectively closed, they've stopped the traffic flow and the clearing of the gravel spill. it looks like the speed sensors may be opening up. we'll double-check to see if chp hasn't opened everything in the last few minutes. foothill road getting jammed with traffic. if you're coming out of livermore, highway 84 and join in sunol, that's fine. it's a lighter flow because it's a friday. we are looking at an advantage there. they can head toward 580 through dublin and castro valley. if you're heading toward the bridges, that's a good option as well. >> thank you very much. we do begin with breaking news and new fears of an

escalation in the middle east conflict, after israel carries out a military retaliation against iran. it follows iran's unprecedented strike on israeli targets last weekend. also a retaliatory move. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. what is the white house saying? >> reporter: good morning, laura. so israel's strike really ups the ante on heightened middle east tensions and comes despite president biden's calls for restraint. this is video of the strikes targeting a military air base near central iran. local state media says nearby nuclear sites were not impacted. the u.s., we're told, was not involved in this and flights in iran are resuming this morning with no restrictions, after reportedly being suspended earlier in several iranian cities. israel had vowed to respond to iran's strike saturday. that's when iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at

israeli targets, most all of which were intercepted and caused little damage. now, u.s. secretary of state blinken spoke this morning at the g7 meeting of foreign ministers in italy and says the g7 condemns the weekend attack. >> we're committed to israel's security. we're also committed to de-escalating, trying to bring this tension to a close. >> reporter: blinken this morning is not out-and-out confirming that israel warned the u.s. ahead of time about the strike, but he is reiterating the u.s. was not involved. yesterday the white house announced new sanctions targeting iran's missile and drone program. that was in response to last weekend's attack. >> brie, let's talk about americans. has the u.s. issued any advisories to americans, perhaps in that region in light of this latest attack? >> reporter: they have. so the u.s. embassy in jerusalem

the alleged sexual encounter with trump. he has denied the affair. opening statements could begin as early as monday. new at 6:00, inmate rights supporters are planning to gather near the federal women's prison in dublin, which is now in the process of being closed. organizers plan to line the bus route taking inmates away from the facility. this week, the bureau of prisons ordered it to close immediately due to the history of sex abuse scandals and employee misconduct. federal authorities say there is a staffing shortage with workers from other prisons being brought in to assist. one san francisco leader is expressing new hope not only for the future of union square but the future of the macy's store slated to close. supervisor aaron peskin says high level discussions are taking place with executives to keep the store open beyond this year. he says this is part of a bigger plan to revitalize the entire

union square area. peskin says it could include converting empty office space to housing, a cable car museum and a performance area as soon as this summer. >> part of, i think, our mission is to make union square more of a neighborhood. union square hasn't been a 24-hour place. >> if the macy's closure does go as planned, some industry experts believe retail and restaurants may still attract visitors and locals to union square. they say the city should consider completely reimagining the macy's building. good news for not just the city of san francisco, but really the entire bay area. >> guess what, san franciscans? i have some really exciting news. we have some cute, cuddly black and white beauts coming to our city. ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to san francisco! >> they're going to be bigger than that stuffed animal.

>> i hope so. >> san francisco mayor london breed making the big announcement. the san francisco zoo is getting pandas. it comes during her week-long visit to china in hopes of bringing business and tourism to san francisco. breed first discussed the president with the chinese president during the apec summit back in november and the chinese president announced the country would restart its panda diplomacy with the u.s. the time of arrival has not been set. the mayor's office says they will arrive once the panda enclosure at the san francisco zoo is complete. we haven't had pandas here since the mid-80s. >> really? >> yeah, '84, '85. now to our climate in crisis, and a crucial animal to our ecosystem is in danger. >> we're talking about deep water sharks. meteorologist vianey arana is here with more on why it's important to protect these predators. >> a san jose state professor who is also a well known shark

expert says we need to act now. this is video from the professor who collaborated with 37 researchers from 16 countries to really dive into deep water sharks. he looks for what he calls lost sharks. there are more than 1,000 sharks species and he has named over 40. in a new study it was confirmed that the population of tidewater sharks is depleting. an unnamed species have been identified as critically endangered. without conservation protections, it could mean extinction. the doctor talked about the critical role they play in our ecosystems. >> these are literally the proverbial canaries in the coal mine, they'll tell you more about the health of the environment than a white shark you'll see along the coast.

under a dollar. a reverse stock split inflates a price by cutting the number of shares in half. this is video of the morning they went public. we were talking yesterday that the same thing is happening to sunnyvale's 23 and me. its share price is so low, the nasdaq is threatening to kick it off its exchange. it's cheap enough, somebody could take the whole company private. the weird thing about 23andme, its overall value as a company, market cap, is less than the money it's got in the bank. you could buy the whole company for this much and cash out this much. mortgage rates above 7%. this is the new normal for now, as inflation remains high and the economy remains strong. high mortgage rates have people stuck. they don't want to sell a house with a 2% or 3% mortgage for a new one at 7% plus. apple says china is forcing it to take communications app like whatsapp off its app store.

facebook threads, telegram, all those kinds of apps that let people communicate, especially those that let people communicate without the government knowing what they're doing. apple says it has no choice but to follow chinese law in china. china worried about its citizens using those apps. the u.s. worried about citizens using tiktok, worried china is too closely associated with bytedance. speaker of the house mike johnson has indicated he will package a bill that would force the sale of tiktok to american interests and he's going to package it with foreign aid. members of congress who want to support israel or ukraine are getting a ban on tiktok as part of the deal. the fast-track house bill will give bytedance a longer period of time to find a buyer. it will have to pass, the

really high, oakland and mulberry between medium and high, depending on the location. typically around the coastline we get some relief thanks to the ocean. if you're going to be in inland areas, expect to see the pollen count really high. dust is medium, molds low. that's because we've had high pressure. it traps all of the pollutants and all of the yucky stuff closer to the surface. that prevents anything from mixing out. please be mindful into saturday and sunday as well. that's not going to be the only day. next week we could see an improvement. unfortunately, this weekend keep that medicine handy. today we're going to see a slight cooldown in san jose, 77. look at martinez, 73. san mateo, 66. the city is going to be in the 60s. tomorrow we're going to keep similar conditions, but we start to see a bump by sunday. we're going to be in the 80s and

monitoring the latest here. scott, let's talk about this. that strike is in response to the iranian strike on israel, right? >> yeah, which then is in turn a response to the israeli attack on an iranian consulate. you can see why the u.s. and other countries are very worried about this getting out of control quickly. reporters were just speaking to the secretary of state, antoni blinken. >> we're committed to de-escalating and trying to bring this tension to a close. >> one sign this may be de-escalating is the strike itself. it was very small. this is video of something somebody saw in the area of the strike. apparently on an iranian air base near a city called, and iranian media are playing it

down, maybe a sign both countries have found an off-ramp. here is jack jacobs. >> i think we have to assume that's it from israel for the time being, and perhaps they're just trying to see whether or not iran is going to respond. >> now, isfahan is right there. it's a city of about 2 million, home to a lot of weapons manufacturing and a lot of historic sites. there's a nuclear plant in the area. the iaea says that power plant is just fine. this comes after a massive iranian air strike on israel using missiles and drones, nearly all of which were shot down by israel. only one person hurt. again, that in response to an israeli air strike. the u.s. has urged israel not to respond. it did. but, again, it was a very limited attack. marcus, we don't know that this was necessarily the last attack. back to you. >> we will be following.

thank you. well, it is 6:34 this morning. new developments in a controversial death in police custody from 2021. now, it comes in the form of a new criminal charge filed against three alameda police officers. tonight a vigil is planned for the man who died, mario gonzalez. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live with a closer look at those charges. a lot of folks are talking about this. >> reporter: yeah, so this came through really late last night, so a lot of folks are still processing what this means. these charges against these alameda city police officers were not filed by district attorney pamela price of alameda county, rather by the police accountability unit that she created, so she is trying to separate herself from how this is proceeding forward. we do know that the three officers who will be charged with involuntary manslaughter are eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron leahy.

26-year-old mario gonzalez died in 2021 after he was pinned down by alameda police officers for several minutes. the officers' body cameras were recording and the video shows gonzalez struggling to answer questions before officers tried to restrain him. once he's pinned to the ground at a public park in alameda, gonzalez can be seen shouting and grunting before losing consciousness. previous district attorney nancy o'malley found insufficient evidence for charges. the police accountability unit for alameda county found otherwise. the district attorney says police accountability is about rebuilding trust. >> if people don't believe that police officers or law enforcement can be held accountable, then witnesses won't cooperate, we can't do our job without witnesses. we won't be able to administer justice if the community doesn't trust that the system is going to work for everyone on an equal basis. >> reporter: i'll correct myself. i said it's called the police

accountability unit. it's the public accountability unit. we did reach out from comment from the officers, we got a written statement, reading in part, the district attorney waited until the 11th hour before the statute of limitations was set to expire to bring these charges just days after it was confirmed she would face recall. there is no new evidence. this is a blatantly political prosecution. now, district attorney pamela price did not answer many questions about the case specifically, she says now that charges are filed, she is going to distance herself and she will be independent from the proceeding of that case. the campaign to recall her, by the way, does continue forward. that vigil will feature mario gonzalez's mother, she's going to speak tonight at 5:15 in alameda at the park where he died. that is happening tonight. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. happening today, a status hearing for the man accused in

the half moon bay shooting rampage. earlier this year he pleaded not guilty to new grand jury charges. investigators say he gunned down seven of his colleagues on two mushroom farms in january of 2023. at one point last year, he confessed to nbc bay area during an exclusive jailhouse interview. the man who brutally attacked nancy pelosi's husband in their san francisco home is expected to be in court ahead of his scheduled state trial. dave depape is still awaiting sentencing in his federal case and faces up to 50 years. the start of the state trial has been pushed back several times. well, the annual 4/20 meet-up in san francisco is just about 24 hours away and the official hippie hill light-up is canceled. organizers shut it down citing staffing concerns. the city stepped in and planned a sports-related event.

now there's a new effort with the idea that people will still show up for 4/20. members plan to help with crowd control, handing out water, and providing some medical support at hippie hill. the church says the goal is to keep everyone safe and make sure garbage is not left behind. >> it's unfortunate that this has happened the way it did, but we know the city is putting a lot of resources in it and we're trying to do everything we can to help. >> the church focuses on the use of cannabis and magic mushrooms in religious ceremonies. activists in san francisco holding a rally, in part for our climate in crisis. the group is calling it an either day action to coincide with conflicts in the middle east and africa. organizers are planning to gather at the embarcadero plaza at 10:00 a.m. the bay area's only safari attraction is springing to life

to celebrate earth day. >> sonoma county safari west will hold a family day tomorrow that will include conservation and education. dozens of groups are expected to take part. one of the co-founders says visitors are going to be able to meet and greet with conservation experts. >> they bring with them some animals. we have bats coming, ravens, and the children who come and the adults who come to participate get to see all of these creatures up close and personal. >> how cool is that? so the park, of course, is going to include hundreds of animals. they also have zebras, a rhino, cheetahs, antelopes. they're encouraging you to dress up your children in their favorite animal costume. >> nice chance to go out and see it. the weather is going to be extraordinary. >> it really is. comfortable enough to where you're feeling warm but not too

it will be back. we're monitoring a system that will make its approach starting next tuesday, bringing back some cooling, but also we're watching a potential development of a storm out there. we'll keep you posted. here he is. >> with a parade of cars that is slowly crawling across the san mateo bridge. some clean-up work. if you can choose between the two, avoid the san mateo bridge and take the dumbarton bridge westbound. 880 shows more traffic as folks are making that choice. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive and good recovery from pleasanton. now, starting tonight at 9:00 p.m., a full closure of westbound 37 will go from highway 29 to 121, so all weekend long you have to go with the longer route on highway 12, up and over from 29 to 121. or you can head south to the richmond bridge and use that for westbound 580. tomorrow, 4:00 in the city, the mission, they're going to have a

old ones. the transit company removed the last of the legacy trains this year and b.a.r.t. will hold a retirement ceremony and offer a final ride for its old fleet. the legacy trains have been synonymous with the bay area for more than five decades when b.a.r.t. began service in the 1970s. a big celebration for everyone happening in the east bay. the only requirement is you don't exceed 24 inches in height. >> i just missed it. snowpack is going to look like. south lake tahoe right now is at about 32 degrees. they have also been feeling the impacts of warmer weather, and your san francisco forecast includes that marine layer. look at the golden gate bridge shot. it is comfortable, but stretching through san francisco, portions of the interior. it will eventually clear and we'll get a mix of sun and clouds. here is a closer look at how satellite radar is playing out. a calmer pattern into saturday and your sunday forecast. i want to make sure you're prepared with your allergy medicine because the pollen count has been very high because of this high pressure. grass will be high through the weekend, mulberry and oak, dust and mold will be low. depending on where you will be headed, you'll get more relief along the coast because we are expecting a light breeze and we are expecting to see high pressure lingering into your sunday, monday, tuesday forecast before we see a change in the

weather pattern by the time we get toward the later portion of the week. this ten-day temperature trend does a great job of painting that picture. by wednesday into thursday, that system will bring a bit of a cooldown, and some instability. but not to everybody. so far, daytime highs will be comfortable. mike, how are those roads? >> it's friday. we have lighter overall traffic, which is a really good thing at the san mateo bridge. flashing lights remain in the service area. there's a little bit of service portion of the roadway, so folks can get by without changing lanes. but it is a distraction. things have simmered down. it's been there for a little while. still slow across the san mateo bridge. the dumbarton bridge, it may take you extra time to use 880. map it out. there's improvement in pleasanton. south bay shows a little slowing for north 101. friday, lighter traffic flow.
