famous rose garden. spring has sprung. and it looks like it is simply a beautiful day to stop and smell the roses. thanks for joining us. i'm chris chmura. cynthia is here with a quick look at our forecast. is it a good day? what do you think? >> a great weekend to go out and smell the roses. good morning, everyone. we're starting off a bit gloomy in some spots on the coast and the north bay, where the subpoenas are chilly, in the 40s. 48 in novato and santa rosa. it will be a beautiful day and a beautiful weekend. no rain. we deserve it. by the middle of the day, we see the fog hanging around the coastline. and breaking apart for a beautiful sunset on the coast. we're going to keep it nice and sunny, into tomorrow.

we'll go on a cooling trend, next week, with a little rain chance. we'll talk about that coming up in 15 minutes. back to you. >> i stopped listen when you said rain. new this morning, an east bay bicyclist is critically injured in what might have been a dui crash. the biker was hit on lone tree way west of o'hare. we are awaiting an update on his condition. police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving drunk. the loved ones of an east bay man who died in custody three years ago, are saying it's a step in the right direction. alameda county d.a. charged three officers in mario gonzales' case. the charge is involuntary manslaughter. >> the officers could face up to four years, which isn't much to

the people who layed flowers. they say it's something. a bigger turnout than the previous two years. on what loved ones are calling the angelversery of mario gonzales. photos on this bench, some with his young son. mario's mother told the crowd, where her mother encountered three officers. >> it's not easy. it's not easy to be holding the pain. >> she never lost face. >> something is going to happen. >> it finally did. >> i learned that our public accountability unit has filed charged against three lawsuit officers. >> reporter: the three are charged with involuntary manslaughter. body cameras show that the officers pinned mario down while trying to restrain him for several minutes.

>> things are moving in the right direction. >> this comes after the district attorney's office opened the case last year. despite that they concluded there was not enough evidence for charges. the alameda police chief doubling down, after a fourth independent review, he stands by the decision the officers did nothing wrong. the attorney the is calling this a political prosecution, as they face a recall. >> i think it's a gimmick. >> reporter: don't buy it. >> i think pamela price is doing what's right. she ran her campaign on police accountability. >> reporter: now, high hopes for three guilty verdicts, as they say the evidence speaks for itself. >> that should be enough to rightfully convict him. >> i'm not an attorney. i don't know about the law. but i'm a mother. he was my son.

i want to see something strong with him. >> reporter: so nobody has to endure what they have. a major road closure can detour your weekend plans. in the north bay, caltrans shut down part of highway 37 for road repair. westbound 37 is closed from vallejo to serious point. caltrans doesn't set to open 37 until early monday morning. look at the map on your screen. the red line, the closure. the green, how to get around it. drivers will be directed to 12, 29 and 121. this is the first of four closures planned. a lot of folks use 37 to get to napa. they are aiming to wrap up before the bottle rock festival in may. commuters that use the bay. ferry service between san francisco and sausalito is

suspended indefinitely. investigators found a structure issue with the pier. pier will be closed until workers can fix it. golden gate ferry will provide a bus bridge during the closure. two giant pandas are coming to the san francisco zoo. mayor breed announced it. ed lee had a lot to do with it, too. we show how the team went to china to ask for pandas. >> it's a great moment. it took seven years to do it. >> reporter: the former demty chief of staff, said he held two animals. he got them in his trip of 2017. he tells us, he was part of a team that lee chose to go to china and deliver an important letter from lee. part of that trip was lee's

wife, anita, as well as an executive at united airlines. >> it was important to him as a chinese american mayor, as well as a citizen of san francisco, that this was a great bridge between the two countries. >> reporter: her visit to the giant panda breeding is one she won't forget. >> what struck me is how much joy it brought to the visitors to the research center. it was quite a beautiful experience. manager we wanted to replicate in san francisco. >> that day could be soon. >> i have exciting news. we have huge, cuddly, black and white beauties. >> reporter: she made the announcement during her tour in china. she signed a letter of intent

that outlines plans to bring the panda to the san francisco zoo. the timeline isn't clear. the zoo needs to complete a panda enclosure. people are look forward to seeing them. >> that's exciting. we want more animals in the zoo. it will be fun for this guy. >> it will strengthen our ties with china, which is an important visitor market with san francisco. we couldn't be more excited. >> it adds to the legacy. it's great that this is even bigger. >> planning has begun for the enclosure. and according to breed, officials will travel to san francisco this week to meet with zoo engineers. san francisco police say they arrested three men that they've connected to a spring of car break-ins. sky ranger was over the scene yesterday. police blocked off the area, while they investigated.

police implicate the men in several burglaries around the city. they faced several charges, including car burglary, resisting arrest and conspiracy. advocates are upset with the bureau of prisons. abrupt decisions to close the prison in dublin. now, they have a restraining order on stopping prisoner transfers. on monday, the bureau of prisons announced it is closing the prison, that has been grappling with a long history of sexual abuse. advocates filed a restraining order with the court, that stopped the bureau from transferring inmates to other facilities ahead of the closure. >> they are saying they are scared. they are afraid. the food shipments have stopped. they're not receiving fresh food. >> advocates fear proper procedures are not being followed. the bureau of prisons would not comment on the issue because the issue is tied up in court.

the man accused in a mass shooting in half moon bay returned to court after a year without trial. he faced a judge in redwood city courtroom yesterday. during the hearing, the judge agreed to temporarily seal all evidence in the grand jury indictment. and set a pretrial conference in august. that's when the actual trial date might be set. he is accused of shooting and killing seven people and injuring another, back in january 2023. the two mushroom farms owned by california terra garden. he pled not guilty to all charges related to the shooting spree. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, pot and pets. some say cannabis can help your cat or dog. it's not necessarily all good. we'll break down what you need to know.

welcome back to "today in the bay" this saturday. it's 7:12. that's a look at san francisco from our camera in emeryville. it's 51 in san francisco today. she is expecting comfortable high temperatures around the bay area. finally, finally the temperatures are climbing. you know what else is climbing? gas prices. they are on the rise. especially high here in the bay area. right now, the average price for a gallon of gas in california, accordsing to aaa is $5.45.

that's more than 50 cents higher than a month ago. and in san francisco, it's even worse. $5.71 for a gallon of gas. that's two bucks more than the national average. >> i am a contractor. it costs me $100 a day for fuel. >> this chevron, $6 a gallon for regular. it's not unusual for gas prices to raise with spring's arrival. what will happen next? the rises might be stalling. it's so expensive, after all. along with decreasing oil prices, despite rising tensions in the middle east. b.a.r.t. is ushering in a new era of trains in the bay area. first, a nod to the old one. b.a.r.t. is having a retirement ceremony and offering a final road to its old fleet. the transit agency removed the last of its legacy trains

i see it calming down and giving us more sunshine as we go into sunday. let's backtrack and talk about temperatures today. upper 60s in san francisco. 73 in santa cruz. and more 70s, the upper 70s san jose and martin. maybe hitting the 80 degree in fair field and santa rosa. the free national parks day. we have one of those in muir woods this weekend. it's for today at point reyes seashore is involved. check for the parking and the beautiful temperatures continue there. into san jose, where we have science palooza. the biggest stem festival. gorgeous weather out there for children, families, everybody to learn about science down here today. and let's go into tomorrow. i said the temperatures were going to keep on worm warming. we have more 80s on the map,

from the north bay to los gatos. 60s and 70s with 77 in mountain view. we'll keep the party going into monday, as well, before we cool down and get into our work week on tuesday. the models are bringing in more cloud cover. and there's systems around the bay area. they're disorganized by the middle of the week. later in the week, we see the return of the sierra snow and some rain that drifts into the bay area. now, for the inland valleys and south. into the weekend, it looks like the system breaks apart. a little of the color gradient. we could see high pressure and low pressure battling it out. keep on eye on that. and we'll keep an eye on the forecast for the next six days. tomorrow is the cherry blossom parade, starting at 1 in downtown. earth day is monday.

sporting event begins in one of the most beautiful cities. the paris olympics. garvin thomas has an east bay native who started in his sport when he was just 3 years old. >> reporter: nicholas' sport is tae kwon do. at age 3, he was watching "teenage mutant ninja turtles" and "power rangers" and wanted to find some place to train. his mom got good in the sport but he is world-class. he qualified for the games earlier this year. he said, that took a lot of pressure off, that meant he could put his energy to be ready for paris in july. we learned that he isn't just good at roundhouse kicks. he is well-rounded. he makes music and wants to release songs in the coming days. and he is really into fashion,

livermore valley and santa rosa. it should give us more sunshine today. it will be breezy near the coast. as we go into tomorrow, warmer still, with a little less of the morning fog. it will be a spectacular sunday around the bay area, with 80s inland. and there's a possibility of light rain chances. back to you. >> thanks. like to hear that. new this morning, an east bay bicyclist is injured in what might have been a dui crash. the driver hit the bicyclist around 9:30 last night in brentwood on lone treeway. it left a dent on the hood. the bicyclist had head trauma. a helicopter took him to the hospital. we're waiting on his condition. police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving drunk. movement in the right direction, on a reopened case about a man who died in police custody in 2021.

the group gathered at alameda park. his mother told the crowd she never lost faith they would get closer to justice. d.a. price announced that three officers involved are being charged with involuntary manslaughter. body camera footage shows the officers pinning down gonzales for several minutes before he lost consciousness. >> i'm not an attorney. he was my son. i want to see something strong with them. >> d.a. price's predecessor's office concluded there were not enough evidence for charges. the alameda police chief doubled down saying he stands by the earlier decision these officers did nothing wrong. the attorney for officers is calling the new charges political persecution.

officers could face four years if convicted. a major road closure is in effect. this could impact the weekend driving plans. caltrans shut down westbound lanes of highway 37 in the forth bay. it runs from vallejo to serious point. 37 is expected the stay closed until early monday morning. look at the map. the red on your screen is your closure. most of 37. and the green is how you get around it. drivers will be directed to 12, 29 and 121. this is not the only closure. the first of four planned. a lot of people use 37 to get to napa. caltrans will wrap up construction as quickly as possible. we're following developing news that could affect thousands of commuters. ferry service between san francisco and sausalito is suspended indefinitely, due to a

structural issue at the pier. the issue was discovered during a routine inspection of the pier yesterday afternoon. the pier will not remain closed until engineers can fix it. golden gate ferry will provide a bus bridge during the closure. a live look at capitol hill where the house of representatives is set to vote on four foreign aid bills, giving aid to ukraine and israel. mike johnson put the bills up for a rule vote on yesterday. they provide for ukraine, indo and a national security bill. that includes a measure to perhaps ban tiktok in the u.s., if its owner does not devest itself from its china owner. that might spell trouble for the speaker who faces backlash from the right wing of the republican

party. those reps are not happy with him for allowing the vote to happen in the first place. opening statements in donald trump's hush money trial are set to begin monday. this after a tense jury selection process and a horrifying scene outside of the courthouse. yesterday, the trial reached a key milestone with the full jury, including alternates, selected. and sworn in. trump's attorney also filed a final and unsuccessful motion to stall the trial. as jury selection was under way, a man set himself on fire across the street from the new york city courthouse. we learned that man has died. officials say he threw pamphlets into the air. investigators describe the pamphlets as propaganda and the man as a conspiracy theorist. more drama here at home and controversy involving a

congressional race in san mateo and santa clara county. a recount continues to find out who will run in november. "today in the bay's" ian cole says there's new allegations of campaign finance violations and uncounted ballots. >> reporter: there's accusations flying as the recount for the 16th congressional race churns along, with many political watchers around the country waiting to see who will face off in a runoff in november. a south bay attorney says he is taking legal action. the president of the santa clara county government attorney's association says he filed a new complaint with the federal election commission, accusing him of violating campaign finance law. in an attempt to skirt contribution limits and avoid negative public attention by personally calling for a

recount, mr. liccardo and the other appear have a scheme for a recount. it's not clear if they will investigate the complaint. the tech ceo and former staffer that called for the recount, responded in part, this complaint is the definition of frivolous. it's based on conjecture and wishful thinking. padilla said many ballots were excluded from the count. some of the ballots in question are provisional, cast by people who registered the day of the election. >> they were not improperly excluded. the processes we have in place is to make sure that every vote counts. again, we're the observers, have their reasons for challenging these things. and we're trying to determine if these are valid challenges. >> reporter: while all of this is happening, there the a call

for transparency in the recount. saying after count the vote is paying for it. quote, what i do not have confidence in is where the money in this super pac is coming from. is it one generous donor or several donors? and how much have they contributed? are they special interest in and what's the interest in our congressional district. we asked if voters have the right to know who is pay for the recount. the campaign manager responded yes. padilla says the super pac will disclose its donor list in accordance with rules. ian cole, "today in the bay." the annual 4/20 meetup in san francisco, would be today. official hippie hill light up

event is canceled. organizers shut it down weeks ago, citing staffing concerns. the city stepped in and planned a sports-related event in the same area. oakland's church of ambrosia is leading a new effort, that people will show up for 4/20. here's what members of the church plan to do. they will show up and help with crowd control. they will hand out water and provide medical support at hippie hill. the goal is to keep everyone safe and make sure trash isn't left behind. >> it's unfortunate the way it did. the city is putting resources in it. and we're trying to do everything we can to help. >> the church says it focuses on the use of cannabis and magic mushrooms in its ceremonies. still to come on "today in the bay," sharks under threat. ahead of earth day, one expert breaks down the situation off of the california coast. we're in the middle of... livin' large!

you felt it yesterday with the cooldown. you'll feel it today, 15 or 30 miles per hour. it be wind down into sunday. let's talk about our events going on around the bay area. there are a lot of them. i cannot keep track. earth and arbor dain cupertino. 74 degrees. bring your hats and sunscreen. this runs from 11:00 to 3:00. let's go to san francisco, a huge weekend. cherry blossom festival. a bit of the cloud cover. not too bad, upper 60s. and warm sunshine, as we go into storm tomorrow's grand parade at 1:00 in the city. as far as temperatures in the next couple of days, we'll keep the warm party going, today, tomorrow and into monday. 66 in san francisco. 70s around the east bay shoreline. we get more 80s on the map here as we go into sunday.

as far as the north bay, parts of the south bay, los gatos, and the upper 70s for the peninsula there in mountain view and in san mateo. and we keep this warm weather continuing on into our earth day. 60s, 70s, 80s inland. that's it for the 80s. we have high pressure through tuesday on our calendar here. and we will see more of the cloud cover bringing about on wednesday, with a few more of those changes. and a couple systems that are working their ways around the bay area. struggling to make it through. right now, the models are hinting rain possible into friday. we get more of the widespread sunshine into next week. we might be done with the rain the next ten days. in san francisco and our inland valleys, we'll be pleasant for anything that you choose to do this weekend. we'll go from 70s to 80s and into the upper 60s by the late part of the week.

tesla is recalling 3,000 of its new futuristic cyber trucks. the accelerator might

malfunction. >> sliding up. and the way this was hooked on to the pedal, it held the accelerator down 100%. >> this is video that went viral on tiktok apparently illustrating the problem. tesla says, if dislodged, the pedal can be trapped and cause the truck to accelerate unintentionally. on monday, the company announced it will lay off 10% of employees an its stock price has fallen 40% this year. now, to our climate in crisis coverage. an animal that is crucial to our ecosystem faces danger. we're talking about deep water sharks. cynthia is back with more on why it is important to protect these predators. yeah? >> yeah. definitely important. and a san jose professor who is a well-known shark expert says we need to act right now.

this is video from that team with professor david ebert. he works with a team of 37 researchers from 16 different countries. really diving into deep water sharks and rays. he looks for what he calls lost sharks. there are more than 1,000 shark species. he has named over 40 of them. in a new study, it was confirmed that the population of tide water sharks is depleting because of the liver oil and meat trade. an unnamed species has been identified as critically endangered. without conservation protections, it could mean extinction for it. the doctor caulk edtalked about critical role these play in our ecosystem. >> these are canaies in a coal mine. they will tell you more about the health of the marine environment, than something like a white shark along the coast. >> he adds if the population continues to continue to decline, reversing it would not

we're awaiting an update on his season. police arrested the driver on suspicion of drunk driving. a major road closure in effect. this one could impact your weekend plans. last night, caltrans shut down all westbound lanes of highway 37, up in the north bay. for road repairs. it runs from vallejo to sonoma. highway 37 is not going to reopen until early monday morning. the red is the closure. the green, how to get around it. caltrans says drivers will be directed to 12, 29, and 121. this is the first of four dloe closures. a lot of folks use 37 to get to napa. crews will try to wrap up construction before napa's bottle rock festival at the end of may. following developing news that could impact commuters. ferry service between san francisco and sausalito is suspended indefinitely. officials say inspectors
