hamilton hall on campus, arresting nearly 100 people. there are no reports of injuries. and this is just the latest clash on american campuses over the israeli war on gaza. let's go to matt bodner, who's following developments for us. matt, good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: grafrances, good morning. obviously, dramatic images out of columbia university overnight. campus administration calling nypd late yesterday evening. the nypd showed up around 9:00 p.m., and they claim the campus was cleared about two hours later about 11:00 p.m. the university says it was forced to call for this assistance after protesters seized hamilton hall. special police units had to enter through a second storey window. they arrested 40 people in that building. overall, across the entire demonstration yesterday, 100 detained. the nypd says there's no injuries. columbia already is under fire for calling nypd in the first place, with students and faculty

saying this is an infringement of their free speech rights. the university says it has also asked the nypd to stay on campus through graduation on may 17. so clearly concern that this is not going to stop here. this obviously is happening on a number of campuses across the country. just developing right now, frances, in california on the ucla campus, clashes appear to be breaking out between pro-palestinian and pro-israeli protesters, essentially what appears to be happening is that pro-isr pro-israeli demonstrators have attempted to dismantle an encampment. this is a developing situation, and we'll be keeping track of this as the day moves forward. >> matt, thank you. this morning, secretary of state antony blinken will meet with benjamin netanyahu in israel. blinken said earlier he will insist to the israeli leader that much more needs to be done to ensure that enough humanitarian aid gets into gaza.

it comes as cease-fire talks with hamas falter and netanyahu promises to go ahead with an incursion into the southern city of rafah. more than a million people are sheltering there, and aid organizations have warned of disaster in the war expands further into rafah. florida's new six-week abortion ban is officially in effect this morning. the new restrictions sparked a scramble at clinics across the state and set off a race to overturn the law through a ballot measure this fall. brie jackson joins us live from d.c., with how it could reshape the presidential elections. so brie, good morning. passing this amendment won't be easy. >> reporter: that's right. this will have to go beyond partisan politics, while some democrats believe it could put florida in play for president biden. it does need a 60% super majority to pass, which means it will need significant support from republicans and independents. the amendment would protect abortion rights until roughly 24 weeks. but either way, that vote does

not happen until november. and this six-week ban is law until then. clinics have seen a huge uptick in patients ahead of the ban taking effect, including many from outside of florida, since surrounding states have some of the strictest laws in the country. now one of the ban's sponsors says that's why it's needed. >> a lot of patients will come in for their consult and be told that we can't see them. we're liking at the southeast completely, like an abortion desert now. >> we're a conservative state. we should not be allowing abortions, and we certainly shouldn't be providing abortion tourism for other states in the south. >> reporter: and that state rep pointed out that the law has exceptions for rape, incest and human trafficking up to 15 weeks, and for the life of the mother and fatal fetal abnormalities. meanwhile in arizona, state senators are expected to vote to repeal the civil war-era ban on nearly all abortions.

responded, these are civilians. they aren't legally in our country. in fact, civilians are commonly defined as someone who's not an active member of the armed services, regardless of immigration status. trump said he'd comply with all supreme court orders. when asked whether he might fire a u.s. attorney who didn't follow the president's order to prosecute someone, trump depo responded it would depend on the situation. the wide-ranging interview making headlines about abortion. trump recently said he nationa saying it would be up to the states. he said the states are going to have to be comfortable or uncomfortable. not me. he was also asked whether states should monitor pregnancies to know if women get an abortion. i think they might do that, he said. you'll have to speak to the individual states. president biden shot back. this is reprehensible.

donald trump doesn't trust women. i do. former president trump was also pressed on the potential for political violence if he doesn't win, saying, quote, it always depends on the fairness of an election. >> our thanks to gabe for that report. the suspect in the killing of four law enforcement officers in charlotte, north carolina has been identified. police say 39-year-old terry hughes was killed in an exchange of gunfire after he allegedly fired a high-powered rifle at a u.s. marshal's task force trying to serve him a warrant. hughes was also allegedly injured four officers in the shootout. he had a lengthy criminal history dating almost 15 years. a metro train and usc shuttle bus collided in los angeles near the university of southern california. authorities say there were about 150 passengers on the train, and two people on board the shuttle bus. 16 people from the train and two from the bus were taken to the hospital.

another 37 were sttreated on th. turning to kansas where a tornado tore through the small down of westmore land, killing at least one. the risk for severe weather continues today. let's bring in nbc meteorologist angie lassman who is tracking all of this for us. a busy week so far. we're not even done yet, angie. >> you've got that right, frances. another round of those storms that could potentially become severe later today. this morning we're waking up to rain across the midwest and already thunderstorm activity across parts of the southern plains. the plains is the area we'll be watching later today to see the storms fire up. we'll also deal with the potential of a flood threat from texas to iowa as we gear up for heavy rain for the next two days. another round of this activity as we look ahead to tomorrow.
