far is the muted response from uc leaders. also michael cohen returning to the hot seat and former president trump's hush money trial. we're live in washington with word from an inside source on the topics that may be center stage today. this is today in the bay good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington, i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with mike with that morning commute in just a little bit. but first let's get a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall what can we expect. it's going to be another really nice day and starts out cloudy and then shapes up to be a very pleasant afternoon. so we're setting the weather on repeat and it will continue into the weekend as well with temperatures coming down a few degrees. but today we'll have warm inland temperatures and cool coastal temperatures. tomorrow the mild weather sticks around and then for the weekend we'll see those temperatures mostly in the 70s. but today a few low 80s in san jose, 81 there and 82 in los gatos. meanwhile oakland stays in the

60s this afternoon and we'll see a wide range in temperatures, all thanks to the fog that will linger along the coastline throughout today and tomorrow in the north bay. we're still looking at some mid to upper 70s, a high of about 79 expected for livermore. as we wrap up the workweek. so we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, you have a look at what's happening in the north bay. i think you're moving nicely. but you know, well populated. there's rarely a time in the morning commute or during our coverage when we see really clear, clear roads as far as population. but we have a nice easy drive, a smooth drive out through the north bay, down from novato all the way to the golden gate bridge and across richmond san rafael bridge and the bay bridge, all moving nicely. and so is the rest of contra costa county. highway four hasn't shown any slowing yet. same thing on either side of the bay. some slower sensor reads for highway 17, although there's not a big project going on that doesn't start until 9 a.m. like it has in the last couple of days. we'll talk about that later. back to you. all right. thank you mike. well, we are following some breaking news this morning in the north bay. the president of sonoma state university is on leave. this is

after sharing a campus wide message in response to pro-palestinian protests. president mike lee issued his statements tuesday night. this is after the school reached an agreement with demonstrators. was, among other things, he agreed to a new advisory council involving protesters, which cal state trustees never approved. he also promised to look into the school's investments and funding, and to halt study abroad programs with israel. now, in a statement, sonoma state's chancellor says i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and community members to see and read the heart and mission of the csu is to create an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone we serve, not to marginalize one community over another. now our ginger conejero saab. she is digging deeper into this. she's going to have a report for us in our next half hour. and to that sudden change of leadership there at the

university. well, this morning there's a new camp protest at uc berkeley. dozens of pro-palestinian protesters are occupying a uc owned building near people's park. the occupiers brought signs about the war in gaza, a uc berkeley spokesperson says a group of mostly non-students not connected with the protesters who left their encampment at sproul plaza, reaching an agreement with the university run protesters, says the takeover is for nakba, a day palestinians remember hundreds of thousands of people being displaced in 1948. it's heartbreaking to say people are dying, babies are dying, children are pregnant. mothers, husbands and their older relatives. what kind of a man this is that the university says it is not going to comment on what it may do. there are a number of police and security guards keeping a low profile near the occupied building in a matter of hours. donald trump's

former so-called fixer and lawyer, michael cohen, returns to the witness stand. he's seen as a pivotal witness for the prosecution and the former president's criminal hush money trial today in the bay's brie jackson joining us live from washington this morning. and brie, what can we be in store for? what's going to happen in court today? good morning marcus. so trump's defense team is expected to continue its cross-examination of the former president's former fixer that is anticipated to take up most, if not all, of the day. a source familiar with the situation tells nbc news. cohen's questioning will focus on his previous testimony under oath, and his repeated lies about events in 2016 and 2017. trump's former fixer spent much or spent more than a year in prison for campaign finance violations, lying to congress and other crimes. prosecutors say it was cohen who paid stormy daniels $130,000 in the closing days of the 2016 general election. they say this was all in an attempt

to keep an alleged sexual encounter between the former president and the adult actress secret. now, prosecutors say trump reimbursed cohen in a series of payments that were falsely recorded as legal expenses. cohen says the former president approved of the repayment following a meeting with former trump organization creation, chief financial officer allen weisselberg on tuesday, cohen testified that after years of defending trump, he turned on the former president and decided to tell the truth about the hush money scheme. after consulting with his family and pledging his loyalty to them and the country. under cross-examination, he sparred with the former president's attorney, who tried to paint him as untrustworthy. cohen is the only witness to directly to directly tie trump to the alleged falsifying business records scheme. trump has pleaded not guilty and denies that the relationship with daniels ever took place. court is not in session tomorrow

in order for trump to attend his son's high school graduation. marcus. yeah, certainly a lot to follow with this trial. brie jackson in washington for us this morning. brie thank you. russian president vladimir putin is in china for talks with counterpart xi jinping. the goal is to deepen strategic ties. china and russia declared a no limits partnership back in 2022, when putin visited beijing days before he sent tens of thousands of troops into ukraine, triggering the war in europe. in a recent interview, putin praised president xi for helping to build a strategic partnership with russia based on national interests and deep mutual trust. governor gavin newsom is in italy this morning and while you were sleeping, he addressed the vatican climate summit. this is while touting california's efforts to combat climate change . i come here today, day 32. 32 straight days over one month where california's economy is

and 75 degrees, could we influence it. absolutely we i think so really. as long as it doesn't, you know, start to turn on itself. i don't want to be really dangerous. the x-men come out storms like. yeah we do have some really nice weather. we can just relax and enjoy it. we're starting out with some clouds and then as we go into the day, our temperature is spread out and we'll see our microclimates in full effect. so it's going to still be bright and sunny. a few of those low 80s for the inland areas. and then again tomorrow we'll see more of the same with some mild 60s and 70s, but then we'll bring down temperatures just a little bit for the weekend, with more clouds that will linger a lot longer near the coastline. so today it's foggy and 62 and half moon bay, while san mateo gets some times of sunshine and a high of 68. as you head inland into the east bay, we'll be in the low 70s for hayward and 80 for livermore, and upper 70s and low 80s for some of the interior valleys,

but mostly some low to mid 70s for this afternoon. tomorrow may be slightly warmer for a few spots, like fairfield hitting a high of 82 there, but we're still in the 70s in san jose and low 70s for san martin, while mountain view will see a high of 77 degrees. and as we take it into saturday, it's also going to be pleasant for those outdoor plans. so let's talk about some things going on. we have the giants game tomorrow evening and it's going to start out with temperatures right at about 60 degrees, coming down to the upper 50s with breezy winds. if you're in the south bay on tomorrow night, it's going to be in the upper 60s. at the time of the bay fc game. and then as we go later into the evening, we'll be in the upper 60s. so definitely warmer there. if you're going out to some of the night markets this weekend in pleasanton, we're going to see some 70s and then dropping down into the upper 50s and low 60s, and then we'll wrap up the weekend with to bay breakers in san francisco. it's going to be chilly in the morning of course, with some low 50s. but as we go

through the rest of the forecast, we're going to see some milder temperatures continue and highs mostly in the 70s in the inland valleys. while in san francisco, we'll continue into the 60s. and mike, it looks like so far it's a pretty good commute. yeah. not bad. i mean, the altamont pass, the crash is still on the shoulder at grant line road for west 580. and there's been no additional slowing as a result. but just watch for the crew there. now we do have a couple of incidents popping up. this 124 just off the walnut creek interchange into lafayette, maybe a disabled vehicle still waiting on chp and lane information. and then over here, 680 as you're coming down through pleasant hill, there may be another crash there. again, these speed sensors are not showing any slowdown. not a major issue. just a couple of things. i've got my eye on here. a little build started for highway 37. right on schedule for that commute westbound through the north bay there, as well as a nice smooth, easy volume here. this is the berkeley curve off the east shore freeway toward the bay bridge with no backup. back to you. all right. looking good. thanks, mike. 522 right now and

we are learning that sonoma county, sonoma state university school president is stepping aside the reason why the school leaders came to that sudden decision, plus cracking down on speeding drivers. the proposal aimed at increasing punishments for those driving over the limits. and here's a live look outside. this is a view from walnut creek this morning. we are looking ahead at that weekend and we're going to have

a full outlook as you make your plans. keep it right here because this is today in the bay you bet. we're looking at the weekend i know already thursday a beautiful shot there. walnut creek two this morning. good morning to you all in the east bay i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia and the north bay and the south bay and everywhere all over. harry's got a look at our forecast for this thursday morning. how are we looking? it looks great starting out with some mild temperatures as a few clouds this morning. but we're also going to see a clearing out and it's going to be a beautiful day. nice weekend ahead too. and we have so much going on. we're going to talk about some events, but as you get out for work this morning in san rafael, it is 55 degrees. in palo alto. it's 57. and that's where we are also seeing a few clouds overhead that will continue into at least 10 to 11:00 at noon. we're all clear, temperatures starting to warm up from the mid 60s to the upper 70s in san jose. look for a high of 81 degrees 80 in livermore. those are some of the warmer spots. most of us will be in the 70s throughout the day. we're

going to talk about the weekend coming up right now. mike, you have a couple of new crashes, right? i have one old crash and one new crash here out of the altamont pass west. 580 still shows a pretty standard pattern and things kind of ease up past north flynn. but just keep that in mind. that may be an issue if you're coming into our area, into livermore, tracey and off. 205 meanwhile, a smooth drive for the rest there is a sudden slowdown on highway 84, so i've got my eyes there, but that is typically where we see some more slowing. there may be a new crash 880 around whipple. we don't see slowing on the sensors here. that's just below the 880 shield there over in the east bay. but we're looking at the volume build for the bay bridge. and again, i'll check on that crash, which looks like it might be in hayward. coming up back to you. thanks mike. it is 532 right now. breaking news. we're following this morning. the president of sonoma state university is on leave following a controversial email detailing a pact made with pro-palestinian campus protesters today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us from sonoma state this morning. and ginger, the chancellor, saying that that message was sent without the

appropriate approval. that is correct. marcus and laura, in an email, the university's president, mike lee, detailed an agreement that he had made with students who had been camped out of here at persons lawn. they had been camped out protesting the israel-hamas war for weeks now. the letter was posted on social media by students for justice in palestine. it was dated may 14th and it was sent to the campus community. president lee said he joined discussions about students demands and as a result of those discussions, he says the parties reached several points of agreement, including establishing an advisory council of students for justice in palestine, an academic boycott of israeli institutions, disclosure and divestment of sonoma state university foundation investments, and calls for a cease fire. now many are expressing issues with the letter, including the director of the college's center for the study of the holocaust and genocide, who tells the press

democrat that he was completely blindsided and finds a provisions made highly problematic. in a statement, csu chancellor mildred garcia said lee's statements were sent without appropriate approvals. she goes on to say in part, quote, i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and community members to see and read. in response to this, president lee said, quote, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. i realize the harm that this has caused, and i take full ownership of it. i deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. now, nathan evans steps into his role as acting president of the university. this is all happening. marcus and laura. just days before the student body ends, the academic school year, and they have their

commencement ceremonies on saturday as well. so there's a lot happening here. we'll continue to watch out how the rest of the community reacts to this developing story. guys, back to you. all right. thank you very much, ginger, for the very latest there. well, protesters this morning occupying an abandoned uc berkeley owned building. this is near people's park. and the latest action by pro-palestinian activists. now, in a statement, the school says that the protesters are mostly non-students and a group not associated with demonstrators who recently ended their tent protest at sproul plaza. so far, the school not commenting on the response it may take. last night, police and security guards were laying down nearby. meanwhile, in southern california, growing tensions are sending classes online today over at uc irvine, it follows a chaotic day. this is where police made multiple arrests after moving in and clearing a pro-palestinian encampment. multiple law enforcement teams also broke through a barricade on campus building building building occupied by protesters.

the chancellor says that the school exhausted all options before restoring to police intervention. after the situation became unmanageable, a bay area family, now fearing for the safety of their loved one trapped in gaza, is asking u.s. lawmakers to step in and help doctor haleh sheikholeslami is from san carlos. she left for gaza at the end of april on a two week mission with a group of other doctors. she became trapped when israeli forces closed the border crossing in rafah, with israel pushing for a full scale assault on rafah. her brother fears time is of the essence. we have to reopen the border, we have to stop the violence and we have to get both our health workers out and other doctors back in because, you know, the people of palestine really need the services. her family is now asking congresswoman anna eshoo to help bring her home. eshoo says she is now in touch with the state department to try to bring the

entire group of doctors home. well, seven months after a cruz robot robo taxi dragged a woman in san francisco, we're learning that the company is about to pay up several reports. cruz, that they have reached a settlement with that woman agreeing to pay anywhere from 8 to $12 million. this is all according to cruz. the woman was hit by a separate car with a human driver and then thrown in front of the robo taxi . but instead of staying in place, that cruz car actually tried to pull over and drag that woman some 20ft, causing critical injuries. after losing its self-driving permit and freezing its fleet nationwide, cruz now plans to resume testing this year, starting in phoenix. it says that human drivers will be in the car. happening today, state lawmakers are expected to hit the gas on a new push to crack down on speeding. the bill would increase penalties for speeders. it would include two strikes on your driving record for anything more than 25mph.

anyone caught speeding more than once in a calendar year would have their license suspended. the senate appropriations committee is expected to take up that measure today. also happening today, the contra costa county fair kicks off. so get ready for those carnaval rides, the clowns food. and so much more. can you leave out the clowns? okay, from early part of the day. all right. the four day event is going to be over at the county event park in antioch. it's going to run through sunday . those doors open at noon each day. the tickets for adults are 12 bucks. and look at our fair forecast, of course, meteorologist kerry ferris wheel out. yeah you know, it's time to do it. it is that time of year, fair season. oh my goodness. all right. so we're going to have some great weather. it's going to be in the upper 70s low 80s. and it will be a little warm during the middle of the day, but still pretty nice one. as we are starting out, our unofficial kickoff to spring. well, here's a look at some more events going on around the bay area, including the oakland greek festival. this will begin on

friday. continue throughout the weekend. it's going to be in the mid 60s, during the middle of the day and then cooling down to the upper 50s, so really nice weather there as well. if you're in campbell, you want to head to the boogie music festival both saturday and sunday, and it's going to be mild to start. but then as we go throughout the day, heating up into the mid 70s, but still really comfortable there with sunshine. and then on saturday in berkeley there will be the himalayan fair going on, starting out cloudy at 10:00 and then as we go throughout the day, clearing and temperatures only in the mid 60s. and then we'll wrap up the weekend with bay to breakers. as we always say, this is the unofficial start to spring, but this is going to be a very chilly event for those costumes and those runners out there where it will be in the mid 50s to start. and mike, you have more info now on that crash. yeah, i do this crash. we talked about it coming into hayward south 880 jams up. suddenly these sensors quickly changed. there are two lanes blocked from what i understand south 880 at

to the coastline in mountain view, expect a high of 77 there, as well as 77 in fremont. one of the warmer spots will be livermore, up to 80 degrees, and we're seeing some mid to upper 80s as you make your way farther inland as well as farther north. but overall, the bay area is going to have a really comfortable day with the breezy wind and cool weather near the coastline. as you're checking out that 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen as we take it, day by day, the weather is pretty much staying the same. so let's get outside and santa cruz will be in the upper 50s. throughout the weekend, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds here, and for some of the days it may take a while before we actually see some sunshine. and then looking at sonoma valley, where it clears up a lot sooner, we are going to see temperatures warming up into the mid 70s, but our morning starting out in the mid 40s and overall once again a very nice weekend all around the bay area. our inland areas will reach into the upper 70s. will be in the mid 70s for the start

of next week and also seeing a mix of sun and clouds. san francisco at times that may, gray continues. so we're going to see 60s here throughout the next several days and mike, you heard about those southbound lanes being blocked in hayward. heard all southbound lanes were blocked. they just reopened the far right lane. so one lane now open for our blocked by this crash. we talked about six vehicles involved. two might be on fire and fire crews are there. that's why they initially closed all these lanes. 880 is jammed from 92 all the way down past whipple to about alvarado-niles. you do have an alternate. you can use hesperia, and there are other surface streets. and if you join on anywhere south of alvarado-niles , you're okay heading south down in toward fremont. so this is an issue. you can bail out of the traffic if you're heading to the peninsula. instead of going to the dumbarton bridge, you can go to the san mateo bridge. it looks like some folks already have. look at this. we have early slowing on the high rise as folks head over to foster city. i do believe they're getting out of the traffic.
