moore. lane closures. more headaches if you plan on using 680 in the east bay this weekend , expect a lot of this big delays this video just into the newsroom of caltrans getting to work tonight, shutting down several lanes of the very busy freeway. now, as of 9 p.m. this evening, three southbound lanes, one northbound lane are closed from san ramon to pleasanton. part of that big repaving project. and that project is a long way from being done. nbc bay area's pete tirados joins us live from san ramon. and this is just the latest. i mean, this thing has been going on these intermittent closures on 680 for a year, at least. yeah yeah, it feels like so many of these closures along 680. and we're right near this onramp of 680 south along san ramon valley boulevard. that once again is now closed as that repaving project gets underway. and look, it's the first of two closures that are set to take place this month. the weekend commute
11:02 pm
through san ramon along 680 south will take longer than usual, with caltrans closing off three lanes as a part of its ongoing repavement work. of the much traveled freeway. and those who use it say it's much needed. but there's a lot of potholes that we do have to encounter, and it's a lot of risk for our tires and cars. right it needs it, but it sure is taking a long time. the closure will impact a two mile stretch between acosta boulevard in san ramon and five the 8680 interchange in pleasanton, beginning tonight and ending before the monday morning commute. the previous closures this year addressing repavement work on the freeway were further south along 680, reaching all the way to sunol. so what we're trying to do with these weekend closures is to limit the exposure for our workers, but also to accelerate this project to make sure that we're able to condense those over 100 days of work into just three days. over the weekend, caltrans officials expect the 680 south repaving project to be
11:03 pm
completed by 2026, which means drivers will have to pack their patience with more closures to come. the end result is what we're all hoping for to, you know, have a nice, smooth highway that's not throwing you from one lane to another. take you back out here, live to san ramon with another 680 south ramp closure as they work on that repaving work. now, another closure will take place here at this same location at the end of may. but this closure behind me should wrap up before that monday morning commute. we're live here in san ramon. pete serratos nbc, bay area news okay . thank you. pete. a new travel alert from the state department. anyone traveling internationally during the month of june should be vigilant because pride events and popular tourist areas could be targeted by extremist groups. that message is being heard here . nbc bay area's gia vang has more from san francisco. on a friday night inside the cinch saloon, one of the oldest gay bars in san francisco is greg kirsch. well it's a shame that we have to go back in time. i
11:04 pm
mean, really, greg is talking about this worldwide alert that came down from the state department today warning u.s. citizens traveling overseas to be careful, especially if at popular tourist venues and lgbtq events like pride. it cites the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions. it also goes further, saying there could be more generalized attacks against u.s. citizens and interests. we immediately put it on our social media. we had members immediately asking if it was real, since it was, phrased in such a broad manner, because while the alert is for travelers overseas, many will be traveling to san francisco for pride. one of the largest lgbtq plus celebrations in the world, welcoming 1 million attendees for the festivities and parade. according to the group's website. s.f. pride declined to speak to us tonight, but this is also connected to the warning the fbi and the department of homeland security put out earlier this week that foreign terrorist organizations could target pride month celebrations at home. we would like a plan to keep our community safe, to make sure that visitors coming to san
11:05 pm
francisco, especially since our city is reopening, our doors to tourists, that we keep our queer tourists, welcome and safe in the city. the mayor's office and sfpd didn't respond to a request for comment. but earlier this week, the police department said in response to the fbi and dhs warning it will be working with local, state and federal partners to ensure a safe pride an event many in the saloon still can't wait to celebrate. i think san francisco will do just fine. you know, people here are very aware adversity will win overall and we're strong. let's just let let let's not let that, deprive our right to express who we are in san francisco. gia vang nbc, bay area news. 30 years in federal prison. that is the sentence for the man convicted of breaking into the home of former house speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband, david depape stood mostly motionless in court. u.s. district judge said she took into consideration the fact that depape had no prior criminal
11:06 pm
record. however, she also said the sentence is appropriate because of the violent nature of his attack on paul pelosi and because depape intended to harm then speaker nancy pelosi. had she been home in court, christine pelosi read the victim impact statement on behalf of her parents. and then after the hearing, depape son, khanna stemmed the sentence. i think that's quite sad. and, i think that's a really long time because if you think about it right, he's already nearly 50. he's he's basically it's just a death sentence. the judge ordered depapes federal sentence to run concurrently with any time he may be ordered to serve. if he's convicted on state charges as well. jury selection for that trial begins next week. all right. investigators are reviewing video of a clash between police and protesters at uc berkeley last night. 12 people were arrested, including a cal student. pro-palestinian demonstrators took over an abandoned building owned by the university. uc berkeley says
11:07 pm
some officers who moved in to arrest protesters were assaulted by people with crowbars. police are now working to id the protesters who attacked the officers and say many charges could be coming. the president of sonoma state university is retiring that move after being put on administrative leave for his response to campus protests. earlier this week, president mike lee announced an agreement with the protesters, including a pledge to divest from israel. wednesday. he was placed on leave. the csu chancellor says lee offered concessions. cal state trustees never approved. late yesterday, the chancellor announced. lee is also retiring. well new at 11 tonight, another mail carrier robbed of their postal keys. it happened thursday night, right before noon in palo alto. the suspects not only took the man's keys, but they also knocked him to the ground. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran joins me now in the studio tonight. jocelyn, this is not the first time. it's happened
11:08 pm
quite frequently. yeah, and it's not just happening in one part of the bay area it's happening throughout. this is the second incident in palo alto, just this week. it's concerning, of course, for workers. but residents are also worried, knowing thieves have these keys that could give them access to their mail. mail carriers targeted for their postal keys. there's no place, i think, that carriers feel safe anymore walking around delivering mail. the latest in palo alto on thursday before noon. police say a mail carrier in his 60s was delivering mail when two men demanded his postal keys in the parking lot of the southwood apartment complex. he handed them over, but then the suspects wanted his wallet and phone, too . the victim refused. the suspects knocked him to the ground and took off. well, it scares me, right? i'm a single mother as well, so it's really scary. and i'm from germany, so it's a different environment. yasmin lives in the apartment complex. actually, i feel very safe in palo alto, especially in this, apartment complex. so that's very weird feeling. even though it's like. and it's especially because it's during the day, right? it's not at night. it's the second incident
11:09 pm
in palo alto in the last week. on saturday, palo alto police say they arrested two suspects for two robberies of mail carriers. one happened in belmont and the other on ilima court in palo alto, in which one of the suspects pointed a gun at the mail carriers head while demanding his keys. the suspect in this photo is from sacramento. the other suspect is a juvenile and these aren't the only incidents this month in oakland. a couple of weeks ago, video shows a mail carrier walking through a gate when she is approached, the suspects take the workers postal keys. the motivation to do these crimes is to get the keys to get something out of the mail, to do a financial crime. it just remind me i should check my post box because like you're all all the information is there, right. so that's a very it doesn't feel safe. u.s. postal inspector matthew norfleet is asking anyone who notices their credit card or check is missing from the mail to let postal inspectors know. he adds that mail carriers are getting more security than before, but he also asks the public to call police if they see anything suspicious. norfleet also notes
11:10 pm
there are many open investigations regarding these crimes. a $150,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any suspects, almost no cases are solved without the assistance of the public. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news in tonight. justin, a plea for help for the sfpd. they're working to find this man, 78 year old keyshawn xiao. he was last seen yesterday morning near filbert and grant, not far from coit tower. he's considered at risk because he suffers from dementia. doesn't know his name, his address? none of those. xiao is known to frequent chinatown, though an update on a story we brought you earlier this week. antioch police say a man found dead on a sidewalk was the victim of homicide. they've identified him as 48 year old raheem ko. police responded to a call wednesday morning on country hills drive near the antioch health center, where they found the man on the sidewalk. police are not revealing how he died, nor have they identified a suspect. santa clara county district attorney
11:11 pm
says proposed job cuts could put the public at risk. the county says it is facing a $251 million budget deficit. it's released a proposed budget to deal with that shortfall. several departments are being asked to make cuts, including the da's office. the da says he's being asked to eliminate 20 of the 62 detectives that work for the department, a loss he says could prove dangerous. i think this is the first time that i have ever been as concerned about public safety as i am. if these cuts go through, there will be more guns on the street, there will be more fentanyl, there will be more rapists, there will be more gangsters. there will be more child molesters, and there will be a lot less safety for everyone else. county leaders argue the number of detective cuts would bring the da's office to the same staffing level it had five years ago. okay set to reopen this summer. the capitola wharf is coming back to life after storms last year left a
11:12 pm
giant gap in it. city has been working to rebuild the wharf, but has faced several setbacks, including having to tear down the businesses at the end of it. now, the city says plans on partially reopening the wharf in july and then holding a grand reopening in august. highway one in big sur reopened today sooner than expected with a temporary fix. opening comes less than two months after the storms caused part of that southbound lane to crumble into the ocean, so caltrans launched round the clock repairs. it set up a temporary signal light that now alternates one way traffic at that section all day and all night. the repairs continue on the slide damage, though further south of there, which is cut off southern california visitors for more than a year, and san francisco's annual bay to breakers will take over the city on sunday. some 20,000 runners, including many in wacky costumes , will race through the city. been a tradition since 1912, event is upbeat and fun, but
11:13 pm
organizers have to consider public safety as well, and they say they will have multiple security checkpoints and more than 200 private security guards. in addition, with police officers, sfpd says they don't know of any credible threats against the race. check out the route runners start at main and howard, aka the bay. they cover 12km through the city, ending where the waves break at the great highway. we're back in 60s ahead. what is he going to do with it? the big purchase steph curry just made in san francisco that has a lot of people talking and it's a heist. you don't often hear about the new item thieves are helping themselves to in stores across northern california. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. i'll get you the latest on bay to breakers. what to expect if you're headed out to the huge event. plus, of course, all of our weekend temperatures and what's unusual about the weather pattern we're seeing this weekend. i'll see you back here in about six minutes. lessons of the past can guide us moving

today. new at 11 tonight a lego caper. dozens of lego sets were found among $80,000 worth of stolen items in sacramento county. davis police say they arrested two men for organized retail theft. investigators say the men were involved in large scale coordinated thefts in davis earlier this year. now, during the investigation, police found several lego sets, some worth $200. both men booked into yolo county jail. former employees of a popular oakland hotel say they are still waiting for their paychecks. money they've been owed for more than four years, more than a dozen former radisson workers gathered at the hotel last year. i mean, today, last year, the oakland department of workplace and employment standards launched an investigation and found the owner of the radisson had withheld more than 400 grand from 128 workers. now months later, employees say nothing has been done. we gather here today and this time to bring light to the injustice that has been perpetrated upon our sisters and

our brothers in the service industry. those former workers are asking the oakland city attorney to take decisive action to enforce compliance. we did reach out to the radisson hotel for comment, but we did not hear back. okay, we have a new trader joe's. lots of people lined up for the grand opening this morning. trader joe's in hayes valley, it's a neighborhood of san francisco. if you're not familiar, store was initially supposed to open a year ago, but delays pushed back the date. construction took some seven months, and the cost nearly 3 million. okay, so what's he going to do with it? is it going to be his off court office? steph curry is the newest property owner in an area he helped make more valuable. our business tech reporter scott budman gives us a little more detail on the office building on 20th and illinois sold for almost six times what it went for in 2021. that's a big jump in a short time. there's great energy. i can see why steph

wanted to make that investment, said steph. as in steph curry, whose title winning career with the warriors recently moved to the nearby chase center at in pier 70. ucsf and a revamped embarcadero and sf chamber of commerce ceo rodney fong says you have the makings of a much desired part of town. i think it's mixed use. i think it's all of these things that are in proximity and walking distance and not necessarily jumping in your car and yet feeling the intimacy of a neighborhood. speaking of the neighborhood, housing has been hot here, too. we know that it's an area that commands higher incomes relative to the rest of the country. a section of the city that's been on the rise may be soon to benefit from the steph effect. maybe we should do this call again when we finally see some, you know, maybe some network, some effects. right. coming from, you know, him coming in and other people wanting to move
