6:04 pm
hoping that it's a smoother ride. it's a better ride. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. well a surprise move today by federal prosecutors. they've asked a judge to reopen the sentencing for david depape. he is a man convicted of breaking into the home of former house speaker nancy pelosi and attacking her husband. yesterday, depape was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the hammer attack. however, prosecutors say depape did not have an opportunity to speak on his behalf in court. so shortly after the hearing, they asked a judge to reopen the sentencing. though depape was not required to speak, law requires he'd be given the opportunity to do so. the judge acknowledged she did not ask depape whether he wanted to speak and scheduled a new sentencing hearing for may 28th. depape still faces separate state charges. jury selection for that trial begins next week. not unexpected at all, but now official san francisco mayor london breed launched her reelection campaign today. take a look at some video of the mayor at previous events. today

occur. well, the state just celebrated hmong american day on tuesday, the first of its kind resolution recognizing the day for the californians. but the festivities they continue. this was at grant union high school in north sacramento today, these students right here, they're performing the traditional cuttsia or hmong song poetry. the event honored hmong american day along with the graduates and students who are dedicated to upholding the hmong language, culture and history. that woman had your same dress on. terry was pointing to that because that that woman was was me. i am not woman. the keynote speaker. it was very humbled and honored to do that. i also got to hear from the youth today and they were so fantastic, some of them actually ending up here in the bay area. a couple headed to stanford. and by the way, an added bonus. i got to see my mom for belated mother's day. this was a great day for you. it was. it was so fun. look fantastic and you make us proud. thank you, thank you. all right. okay. a huge celebration in santa cruz where the giant dipper is celebrating its 100th birthday on the boardwalk. we've all been there, packed with visitors
6:13 pm
today to celebrate its great history ride. it's the oldest roller coaster in the state, one of the oldest in the country. the giant dipper opened back may 17th, 1924. it took 327,000ft of lumber, 63,000 pounds of steel track to build the half mile track, the boardwalk held a ceremony in front of the giant dipper this morning, and there's going to be a special fireworks show on the main beach. 9 p.m. it's going to be a party that's going to be spectacular. wow. don't miss it. yeah i just ride it. it is, it is. it wakes you up to. it's a little noisy. yes it does. you know what i was thinking, though? the weather behind me kind of makes me a little sleepy. yeah, well, as you can see, the glow on the boardwalk. yes. santa cruz wahab. you can see a little bit of that, too. you're going to be looking at some low clouds as the seabreeze really did a number on temperatures today. if you're around walnut creek over to fairfield inland east bay valley, seeing a big change in temperatures. we've been in the 80s last few afternoons, not so much right now. 69 degrees in
6:14 pm
san jose, san jose, by the way. warm spot today, up to 78 degrees. here's where the cooldown continues. it's that west wind at 16 now down to 63 degrees. so yes, it's jacket weather out in walnut creek. we should typically see upper 70s this time of year 66. in san rafael and back into the low clouds. some misty skies near san francisco at 57 degrees. so checking the temperatures today and notice that we're mostly below average except for livermore and san jose. concord 71 degrees, san francisco briefly near 62. and you can see the culprit here. the cooling that we're seeing now in walnut creek because of the wind. look at that out towards livermore, concord, fairfield, southwest from about 15 to 25, 26mph. not as much till late day in san jose and morgan hill. that's the reason why the south bay saw the warmest temperatures this afternoon. a bit of a trend though. speaking of the low clouds, they should decrease as we wrap up the weekend. what's happening on the coast will be west northwest wind mixing in
6:15 pm
some drier air, so chances are we get a little more sunshine tomorrow afternoon. but the temperatures are going to stay cool with the wind still coming in onshore during the day tomorrow. so morning temperatures start off in the 50s as we head towards lunchtime. numbers recovering into the 70s inland, but not really looking at a lot of 80s in your sunday forecast. even up to the north, ukiah and clearlake staying in the 70s cool low 60s near san francisco. but i think the bigger story is going to be the wind speeds picking up for the afternoon bodega bay down towards the marin county coastline. you see the red picking up there towards tomorrow evening, gusts approaching 40mph. and i think overall similar wind speeds to what we're seeing today, especially in those east bay valleys. you can see towards tomorrow afternoon wind speeds of 15 to 30mph. now a little less wind as we head into monday and tuesday. that will lead to temperatures coming back up. if you like 80s inland, it looks like tuesday will be the day for you. mid 80s to upper 80s out towards fairfield, 82, in san jose. even bayside temperatures
6:16 pm
climbing into the 70s as we head towards the middle part of the week. second half of the week plan on some cooler changes just like we're seeing this weekend. no signs of any big heat, high pressure. just can't settle in for extended periods of time with weather systems passing by to the north. then, as we head towards next weekend. area of low pressure approaching late on sunday next weekend may not only just bring some cooler changes, but we're going to be watching for maybe some mountain showers for memorial day weekend, which is not totally unusual. we sometimes get some late season showers. right now we'll just call for clouds and cooling. next weekend. breezy as well, but overall pretty comfortable. good air quality. you got that sea breeze going. just another one of the midweek warm ups as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. all right not too bad. no rob thanks. still ahead, the bay area welcomes the golden state valkyries. we take you to the celebration underway and the big names performing. and a quick reminder you can now access nbc bay area news whenever you want. we are on 24/7 on roku and other streaming platforms. there you can watch
