6:06 pm
. today's event featured a block party, musical performances, and a list of speakers, including the mayor and state senator scott wiener, who talked about how milk fought against discriminatory ordinances in the 70s. fast forward 50 years. those same issues are back in the spotlight, and look where we are. we have, once again, bigots who are trying to ban our community around the country. we have school boards, even in california, that are attacking queer kids, trans kids. and so when i think back to what harvey would think, he would be so happy that our community is rising up. that gathering at market and castro streets, milk was and so was mayor george moscone, assassinated at city hall in 1978 by supervisor dan white. milk was 48 years old when he was killed. well, the group pushing for rent control in redwood city says it has enough signatures to put the measure on the november ballot. faith action bay area says it has collected thousands of signatures over the last five months. the group plans on

submitting those signatures to the san mateo county clerk on tuesday. if it makes it on the ballot and is passed, the measure would limit annual rent increases and limit evictions. similar measures could come before voters in pittsburgh, san pablo and larkspur. there is a growing problem within our housing crisis. some of our communities most vulnerable, are now struggling to keep their homes after the pandemic. our investigative unit has uncovered a spike in the number of elderly people in danger of eviction. like many major cities across california, oakland enacted an eviction moratorium during the pandemic that banned landlords from kicking out tenants. unable to pay their rent. however, after the three year long moratorium ended last july, landlords were allowed to begin demanding a year's worth of back rent and evict tenants who couldn't afford that. well, today, nearly a quarter of the oakland clients at the eviction defense center are seniors. that is up 17% compared to pre-pandemic. our senior investigator, bigad shaban, spoke with an elderly woman

team usa in paris this summer. this will be the milpitas
6:11 pm
native's third time going to the games, so he's pretty good. previously competed in rio and tokyo, joe will be training at the 888 tennis center in burlingame until july, when he will leave for paris. and marianne favro is speaking with joe right now and will join us with more tonight at 11. and speaking of olympics, surfing isn't the first sport that comes to mind when you think about the games in paris, but it could be one of the coolest to watch this summer. top surfers are headed to what is considered the best wave in the world in tahiti, in tahiti. and while we're all olympic couch commentators, nbc's tommy mcfly is trying it to see what it really takes to compete with the best of the best. he threw on his wetsuit, grabbed a board learning what goes into catching a wave like a pro in southern california today. tommy tries. it has us in beautiful oceanside, california. we're gonna do surfing. avery, courtney, my expert coaches. what does someone a civilian have to know about surfing? we
6:12 pm
surf, obviously in the ocean. sometimes we compete in wave pools as well, but the olympics is still showcased in our seas. so we go out there. you have to learn to read the ocean. you have to learn to stand up. there's a lot of fundamentals and a lot of intuition that plays world class surfer courtney conlogue, our coach, was at one point ranked number two on planet earth. she joined usa surfing when she was 11. you know, if you ask lil courtney when i first got involved in surfing, having surfing in the olympics today, i don't i don't think i could have comprehended it right. i would have just i would have been the coolest thing ever. we started learning to pop up. avery mcdonald, a former national champion, makes it look easy. so you paddle, paddle. once you feel like you're in the wave, put your hands down and then straight to your feet in the middle. all right, three. two. one. go. yeah that's good. that's pretty good. nice. i think the best way to
6:13 pm
try, honestly, is we get out there and we see if you can, you know, make it happen. we one thing courtney and avery failed to mention was just how much paddling goes in to getting out to where the good waves are. surfing can really use like a ball return like in bowling, you just hang on to. that would be helpful, right? once you're in position, it's time to try to ride that perfect wave. which is harder than it looks. so you paddle and paddle and paddle to get out to the waves until. yeah until you finally catch that wave you've been waiting for. now you know when you're
6:14 pm
watching the olympics and team usa surfing. just how tough it really is in oceanside, california. i'm tommy mcfly, nbc news. i think i think the folks in tahiti are going to go for some bigger waves, a lot bigger. i think these are runners. they stay on the ground and they pound the pavement. during san francisco's wackiest race this morning, we're talking about the iconic bay to breakers. some racers serious about the pace, the splits, the finish time. but a vast majority are not. they're in it for the fun. a lot of costumes themed groups and props. some didn't bother with the uniforms and whether with anything, a few decided to go without anything. for some it was their first time. for others, this is an event, an annual event. many of the top finishers from the city, a lot of the marathons, you know, i run, you end up getting kind of isolated and there's an elite corral. but here, you know, you're just kind of with the masses and you get lumped in with people in costumes, people
6:15 pm
who are just here to have a great time. you know, power ranger led the first minute of the race and you don't get that in other races. so it's fun to it's fun to switch it up and really kind of get a little extra energy like that. it's tough to beat power rangers there. he did there. he did finish. he crossing the finish line. bay to breakers has been going on since 1912. it began. it's kind of nice story. it began as a way to showcase the city's resiliency after the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire. so rob mayeda is here now. robin you saw when they started in the at the at the bay, it was sunny blue skies and as they got to the coast, there's the clouds. a few more clouds out there, comfortable temperatures out there today. we had sunshine eventually break through san francisco. still in the sunshine right now. nice finish to the weekend, but a little windy in a few spots. we'll take a look at the wind and there is the gorgeous view. san francisco almost right on the averages today in terms of high temperatures, low 60s near san francisco, 70s inland. next couple of days we should see temperatures climbing above
6:16 pm
average 80s in reach inland. as we head towards monday and tuesday. right now 59 degrees, but at least it's sunny in san francisco, san rafael, 68 degrees and pretty good temperature change here for walnut creek. we were in the 60s this time yesterday evening. a bit more comfortable with those 70s in walnut creek and close to 70 in san jose right now. blue skies. and as we move forward, a two day warm up. and really we're talking about a one day significant warm up for the valleys. it will be tuesday afternoon, east bay valleys south of san jose that will have that chance of those mid and upper 80s. but by next weekend, just like this weekend, we're going to see some cooling as we head towards friday and saturday. right now there's a look at the wind speeds at times gusting over 30mph out near the coast, but the wind direction also kind of mixing in some drier air. the low clouds moving down the coastline today, even monterey bay clearing out thunderstorms, though still an issue closer to the sierra tomorrow afternoon. areas south of lake tahoe around yosemite might see a few of those
6:17 pm
thunderstorms firing up during the afternoon hours, but also notice here around the bay area looks like another day of some sunny skies closer to the coast. so as we head towards tomorrow morning, patchy low clouds around santa cruz, monterey bay, then back into the sunshine as we head into the afternoon and a little bit warmer for a few spots heading towards tomorrow afternoon. low 50s, upper 40s to start, maybe a little bit of drizzle down santa cruz and monterey early and then for midday. temperatures 70s inland and highs tomorrow near 80 in concord's upper 70. san jose, still in those 60s and 70s from san francisco to oakland. but tuesday should be that warm up. they get some 70s bay side mid to upper 80s inland around the east bay, mid 80s around santa rosa and down towards san jose. so tuesday shaping up to be the warmest day. still warm for about wednesday. wind will be picking up for the afternoon, but look what happens here to the saturday. temperatures cooling down big time. 50s and 60s. we're going to see a stronger sea breeze. some
6:18 pm
showers off to the north and around the sierra again as we head towards next weekend. so cooler as we start the holiday weekend next saturday, but then trending a little bit warmer as we head towards the following sunday and memorial day monday. overall pretty pleasant weather, but get ready for that temperature drop from those mid 80s midweek in the east bay valleys. could see some 60s in low 70s next saturday, but then things should rebound a bit moving forward through that three day holiday weekend. for next weekend, we'll keep having these patterns. it warms up midweek, warm up at least you know the rainy weekends. that really wasn't so good. call those off. yeah those have stopped. all right. there you go. thanks, rob. well still ahead sean diddy combs responding after that horrific video of him beating his ex-girlfriend is released. why the rap mogul is saying his actions were inexcusable as he faces multiple lawsuits
