state for life in washington. with the new declaration and the way israel is responding, plus a growing number of dead sea lions found off the california coast is raising concerns. the steps experts are taking to try to determine the cause. also, deadly storms once again slamming the midwest, the destruction left behind and where that system is heading. this is today in the bay area. good wednesday morning. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike in just a moment, and we'll have a look at those deadly storms that we're talking about. but carrie, a much different story right here in the bay area. absolutely yesterday was warm and sunny for the inland valleys. and today we're going to have a slight cool down. we're even now seeing a bit of a hazy a few low clouds kind of rolling by the city. but overall it is mostly clear as we're getting started, we're headed for 68 degrees in san francisco, 68 also in san mateo, a much
5:02 am
stronger ocean breeze that will bring down those temperatures. oakland 75 and 78, in san jose. this cooling trend will continue tomorrow as well. where in spots like concord, we're going to see a high of 80 degrees and some mid 70s for dublin in napa today. tomorrow up to 77. and then on friday we're looking at mostly 60s across the bay area. so we'll talk more about that cooling trend and what's ahead for your memorial day holiday weekend. coming up mike, you're looking at a crash in cupertino. it's been here for a while. carry its pre commute hours right now and opposite your main commute. when it does kick in the northbound direction. but southbound 85 as you're passing through the area you're looking just around prospect. so just past saratoga where there's a crash. still working on the chp report. so that's noted 101 at 880, i believe everything's over on the shoulder, but that's two crashes in the south bay map here and some slowing. see the top of the screen right there. there is a crew last crew i believe picked up a few minutes

ago. so those sensors should adjust. i'll track that. north 880 through fremont. a couple new crashes show up on the castro valley y within the last few minutes, getting a few more details. i'll bring it to you, but there are no slow sensors at the castro valley. y more activity. back to you. all right, mike, thank you. well new this morning, a history making decision and a new blow to israel in its war with hamas. three european nations have agreed to formally recognize an independent palestinian state. now, the landmark move from norway, ireland and spain is also drawing swift response from israel and praise from palestinians. today, in the bay's brie jackson live in washington this morning, and brie supporters, they call this the next step towards a two state solution in the middle east. but not everyone agreeing here. that's right. good morning marcus. well, leaders in all three countries are calling this an effort to help bring peace in the middle east. but it may also lead to new isolation for israel and its invasion of gaza. palestinians are welcoming the announcement, calling it a huge step in their decades long quest
5:04 am
for statehood. east jerusalem, the west bank and gaza strip are all territories israel seized in the 1676 or excuse me, six. 1967 six-day war. israel, meanwhile, is ordering its ambassadors in all three nations to return home immediately. this adds the israeli military expands its operations in gaza. critics are accusing the three nations of rewarding hamas terrorists for the october 7th attack that triggered the war. but the prime minister of ireland calls the decision an historic and important day for ireland and for palestine. today ireland, norway and spain are announcing that we recognize the state of palestine. each of us will now undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision. in the lead up to today's announcement, i've spoken with a number of other leaders and counterparts,
5:05 am
and i'm confident that further countries will join us in taking this important step in the coming weeks. in sweden recognized the palestinian state a decade ago in france is holding off on on any similar move, unless it can be done as an effective tool to make progress toward peace. now, the decision announced today formally takes effect on may 28th. back to you, marcus, and we will be watching for that brie jackson in washington this morning. brie thank you. iran's supreme leader led prayers for the victims of the helicopter crash, which killed iran's president, ebrahim raisi. the caskets of those killed were draped in iranian flags with their pictures on them. on the late president's rice's coffin sat a black turban signifying him as a direct descendant of islam's prophet, prophet muhammad. following the prayer, there was a procession of the coffins through the downtown area, people through scarves and other items for attendance on the truck to touch to the
5:06 am
coffins for a blessing. well, just as we've been revealed in the growing number of sea lions over at pier 39, a different story from the central coast. this is where a large number of dead seal pups are washing ashore. so concerning today in the bay. kris sanchez joins us now with more on what scientists actually think is happening here. i mean, this is not what you really want to hear. pupping season starts next month, but sadly, hundreds of sea lion pups washed ashore on an island along the central coast, appearing to have been miscarried. born too early. these drone shots were taken over ano nuevo island and each of those red arrows points to a dead sea lion pup. there are nearly 300 for reference in an average year, scientists count about 700 pups born and just 1 or 2 miscarried. a researchers from uc santa cruz now studying the carcasses to determine a cause, whether pesticides or something like the avian flu are to blame. but it
5:07 am
could also be that there's just not enough food for a booming population. the scientists tracked the sea lions via satellite and find they're going as far south as baja california to feed. my best guess, and it's a guess, is that food availability is down. california sea lion populations are at a historic high, so that there's they're already at a point where they're pretty much maxed out. now, since early may, there's been a spike in sea lions at pier 39 here in the bay area. and biologists have told us that they're here for the anchovies. there were more than a thousand, the most that we have seen in 15 years. so the hope is that this is maybe just kind of a circle of life thing. you know, nature healing itself, as a scientist said. but there could also be something more serious at play with that many. right right. it'd be interesting to see, you know, the food chain, the current there, if there's not enough food that they're malnourished, perhaps. yeah,
5:08 am
interesting. but it's good. we have some here. yeah we do. that's true. and everybody enjoys that. all right. it's 507 right now. and if everything goes as planned antioch will lose its amtrak station later this year. now, this is because last year, the san joaquin county joint powers authority voted to move that stop to oakley for reasons including lack of real shelter area as well as vandalized property. the new oakley station will also connect better with the recently launched ebart line. today at noon, people opposing that plan will hold a rally urging leaders to reconsider. police are asking for the public's help to help find a missing uc davis student. authorities say diane troyan min, left campus on friday night and took amtrak to mission street in san francisco, where she was last seen. she was reported missing on monday. min is a first year student majoring in computer engineering. she was last seen wearing a dark top, dark pants and black shoes. if you have any information, call
5:09 am
uc davis police. well, you know, parts of the midwest this morning dealing with that aftermath of that powerful and really deadly storm. meteorologist kari hall is here right now, and the damage, i mean, more damage done out there. yeah. and we're hearing that there are multiple deaths in the small town of greenfield, iowa. that's about 40 miles southwest of des moines. and this new video shows the moment that, well, now we're looking at the aftermath of that storm. it just flattened parts of that town and many areas dealt with golf ball sized hail and winds sustained of 70mph. so they're going to be out there assessing today. unfortunately, we're still seeing more severe weather in that area as we take a look at another round of storms. and this has been such an active spring with numerous tornadoes. in fact, record setting numbers of tornadoes across the country and once again, we're still looking at some active weather and storms moving that way. and then we also have a new storm
5:10 am
system that's moving into the pacific northwest. as that continues to move to the east, most likely that will also become another round of severe weather as it moves into the midwest. but we are seeing some very quiet weather here across the bay area looking at what to expect. it will be breezy today and at times gusty, especially in the north bay with milder temperatures, and we're expecting a cool holiday weekend as we are now looking at temperatures in the 60s for highs and then those seasonable temperatures return for next week. so we'll talk more about all of that coming up in a few minutes. mike's been tracking where we can find some lower gas prices before hitting the road. you need those because we hear, you know, this is typically a big driving weekend and the numbers we're hearing are higher than in past years. so let's look at alameda because these prices are actually a little bit lower than we've seen for the last month, alameda county has livermore with their low 424 at diamond gas and mart on south front road. a city by the bay. 479 is their best at gasoline, best gasoline and in mini mart
5:11 am
on san jose avenue a near balboa park. same best in milpitas. 479 at gulf on abbott avenue, right off 237 and 880 where they're both they're easy access. easy access for you as well. gasbuddy.com for you to report or get those prices. taking a look at the roadway, we're going to show you the south bay. we talked about those minor crashes over on the shoulder there. we're going to zoom up toward the castro valley while we saw these appear. the last report we did, but they're both off of the main freeway, so they're on surface streets. no major crashes in the area. i'll track that, of course, but to castro valley, why? 238 five 8880 all moving very smoothly there. 883 oakland there's a live look. you see, folks are hitting the roadway. there's plenty of traffic, but there's also plenty of room. back to you. yeah. give space. all right. thanks, mike. 511 right now, from hidden cost to unexpected expenses. coming up next on today in the bay, we break down the regretful moves homeowners are wishing they'd thought through before buying a home you won't regret. how about
5:12 am
the guy who paid $656 million for a pizza? well, it was two pizzas and they were large. so there is that. as long as they were good, it's okay. all right. plus the top summer trends for you this morning. we're going to tell you the simple things you need to
5:13 am
5:14 am
rosa, you're going to see temperatures in the low 50s to start, but then quickly warming
5:15 am
up. we're going to see those high temperatures up to 82 degrees today. and we'll hit that high about 4:00 this afternoon. not as warm as yesterday. we'll talk about the cooling trend in effect coming up in a few minutes. and it looks like an early trend for this slowing across 92. but the crowd, i believe, is because we've zoomed in a bit more than we were yesterday. so there we go. things look like they're kind of calm right there. it's just smooth moving. not a lot of brake tapping. we'll show you if the sensors are changing though. and their usual spots coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the s&p 500 will open this morning at a new record in vidia reports its profits after the closing bell today nvidia and santa clara, one of the most important tech companies and tech stocks in america. it's up more than 200% in the last year. disney disney owned pixar in emeryville says it will lay off 14% of its employees. that's actually less than we were expecting. disney conducted big layoffs earlier this year, but held off on cuts
5:16 am
to pixar until now. chinese financial media is reporting tiktok will lay off employees, as well as many as 1000 coming from marketing and operations. we're working to nail down a number the biden administration will sell a million barrels of gasoline from the nation's strategic gasoline supply in an attempt to smooth price changes, the department of energy says they'll time it to match demand. now, as we have said many times, no matter who's president, presidents have very little to no control over gas prices. they're not responsible for low prices. they're not really responsible for high prices. it's all supply and demand. but in this case, selling some of the supply does at least add more product into the system. it's bitcoin pizza day. it was on this day in 2010 when bitcoin was pretty much brand new. a guy named laszlo hanyecz paid someone 10,000 bitcoin to bring him two pizzas, one cheese, one
5:17 am
pepperoni. he went on an internet chat and said, hey, if you bring me the pizza, i'll give you a bitcoin. noteworthy because it was one of the first times someone used bitcoin as a currency. also noteworthy because if laszlo had held on to his bitcoin instead of buying pizza, he'd be very rich. the value of 10,000 bitcoins, then $40. very reasonable. two pizzas delivered value of that bitcoin now $656 million. well it doesn't stop there. the guy who went and got the pizza for laszlo, a guy named jeremy, now had all the bitcoin. what if he had saved it? it'd be worth 656 million. but he spent it on gas. yes. and what's funny is the guy who received the money, jeremy sturdivant. i can't remember the main guy's name, but jeremy sturdivant got the 10,000 bitcoin and he ended up using it for travel expenses. so he no one in this equation made any crazy money. it was very it ended up being a very boring story for both of them until
5:18 am
much later when it became an extremely embarrassing one. crystal ball, crystal ball. no. it also proves you know how bitcoin is not a currency, right? because it's so foolish to have spent that money, right? and you have to be able to spend it to make it a currency. least you enjoyed the pizza. it was good pizza. he says he has no regret. the other guy got where he was going all right, well, speaking of regrets, let's talk about this next story. scott home is supposed to be where the heart is. but now home may be where the regret is for some folks. a new bank rate survey finds nearly half of homeowners say they have at least one regret now 40% site upkeep and other hidden costs, which are more expensive. and they are saying that was more than they expected. other issues include buying a house that's too small or in a bad location, paying too much, having too much of a responsibility when it comes to that mortgage and cost payments as well as not taking that home, is in a good investment for them. all right. but when asked whether they do it all over again, more than two thirds said
5:19 am
they would now to live. look at sfo tomorrow was set to be a busy day for memorial day weekend travelers. triple a data predicts 3.5 million people will travel by plane over the weekend this comes as google is adding capabilities to its ai technology to make it easier to plan vacation. as summer approaches, the tool people can use is a new ai powered chatbot, gemini. google developed. you can now type in a vacation with your budget, and it will build a custom itinerary for any type of trip that you want to plan. this includes getting information on flight times, hotel bookings, popular restaurants in that area, and more so you can put in all of those things. here's my destination. you know, this is the sort of food i want to eat. here's how many days. plan an itinerary for me and it'll give you an itinerary. and then maybe i want a little bit more beach time. i want this sort of food. you can keep adding changes to
5:20 am
it, and it'll keep updating that itinerary. google says some popular locations people are planning to go include london, paris and tokyo, which is great for, you know, just foreign cities to you and try to find some cool things to do. a lot going on in paris this summer. yeah, that's what i hear out. all right. weather wise, not a lot going on other than just nice weather. yeah, it's really nice and at least that keeps me from staying too busy around here. it's almost like being on vacation. but we are going to see temperatures in the low 50s to start in oakland. it's 55 in palo alto and 54 now in san jose. after our start in the 50s, we are going to see things warming up a clear morning in walnut creek, and we are going to see the trend going from 50s to upper 70s. and there will be a breezy wind, but also a lot of sunshine. the 7-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, showing that it will get cooler as we approach the weekend. what's happening here
5:21 am
is we're seeing a shift in the wind direction as our pressure systems that cause the winds to blow across the bay area start to move across the region. so we are going to see more of a northerly wind for us for today and for the coastline. there's just enough of that wind that's going to keep it cooler there. but look at how strong the gusts will be at times up to 34mph along the coastline. san francisco even higher if you're in the north bay and parts of marin county along the coastline. and we're going to see those high winds throughout today and a wide range in temperatures as a result of that ocean breeze that comes into the bay area so in novato today, we're looking at a high of 77. while in san francisco it stays in the 60s as you make your way inland will be in the upper 70s and low 80s and not as warm as yesterday. and this cooling trend is what continues as we go into the weekend, as we're looking at highs only in the 70s for much of the bay area tomorrow. and so we're seeing several low pressure systems and
5:22 am
storm systems moving across areas just to our north. keep that in mind if you're going to visit some family up in seattle and portland, it's going to be kind of a wet and stormy in those areas. but farther south, warm and sunny. also cooler weather spreading across the region. so walnut creek will go from upper 70s to today only mid 60s for the weekend, and a very modest rebound in temperatures through next week. our memorial day forecast takes us into the temperatures in the upper 70s and mostly sunny skies, a slight warm up there and in san francisco we're going from upper 50s this weekend to 63 on monday. and mike, you've got something going on in fremont too. in addition to the south bay crashes, which are on the shoulders of the freeways, oh, one less, but now still activity near the castro valley. why off of the freeway not affecting the onramps? this is affecting fremont northbound 680 because of activity. that's not on the freeway. we hear that there's police activity in the neighborhood just off of 680 northbound. just north of
5:23 am
mission, just south of auto mall parkway or durham. and that will affect your slow lane. they've got the slow lane blocked because i believe the search that's going on in the neighborhood is causing them to cause have that slow lane blocked just in case there's activity. someone might jump a fence again, this has been going on for a while. doesn't really have any major impact. and we're tracking, of course, the police incident as well. but there doesn't sound like there's any danger to anybody over in that area. a smooth drive and easy build and no slowing sensors on these maps on the on these on this section of the east bay, except for highway 37 in the north bay. back over to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. it is 522 for you this morning already making a mark. this is for graduating from college next year on today in the bay, we're going to talk about the impact and the impactful way a bay area woman is helping her fellow students and community while earning a degree. and it's a story that will make you bay

not immune to one student at a university of san francisco. well, she's been working to help people in her community. garvin thomas shares her story in today's bay area. proud good morning, everyone. i want to tell you about a young college graduate who didn't wait till the end of her college career to make her mark in the world. when malia busansky got to the university of san francisco, their food pantry for students was housed in the basement of
5:27 am
the school's library in a closet . through her work and the others in the food recovery network, it has a bigger, more prominent space now, with more fresh food, and attracts about 100 students a week. but that's not all. in an effort to reduce food waste, every week, malia gathers excess food from the school's dining halls in the san francisco market and then serves it to those needing food in the mission. you can experience the whole story at nbc bay area.com/bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories of people being good to each other in the bay area. every little bit helps. well, coming up next, the top stories that we're following for you today, including heading back to the courtroom, the next steps in the case against the man accused of attacking nancy pelosis husband. and the upgrade to the contactless payment system on mass transit here in the bay area will not be rolling out this summer. after all, the reason behind this frustrating delay? stay witus. you're watchih ng

clipper system is suddenly put on hold. we're live with the advanced ever card carrying commute. commuter needs to know this is today in the bay area. a good morning to you on this wednesday i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look of the forecast. meteorologist carrie hall is tracking what we can expect. it's been rather pleasant. it has been so nice. but some spots in the valleys yesterday got pretty warm. we're talking upper 80s yesterday. well, today we can give that air conditioning a bit of a break. we're going to have our natural air conditioning coming back. cooler temperatures. and we're also going to keep the sunshine. we're taking a live look outside in san jose where we're going to have some slightly cooler temperatures for the inland valleys, but definitely a cool down near the coastline and going into the memorial day weekend, it's going to continue to cool off and be breezy in pittsburgh. as you're heading
5:32 am
out this morning, it will be 63 degrees and going from there to mid 80s. so still warm in some spots, but once again not as hot as yesterday. with livermore topping out at 78 degrees. and mike, you're saying so far it looks pretty smooth. yeah. and i know you like the sunrises and i don't get often. just focus on that. so here we go. something for both of us. from both of us. all right. let's take a closer look, folks. there's the beautiful drive across the golden gate bridge. it's a nice drive across the water and no problem for fog or visibility as we do look at the rest of the maps we come down. there was a little slowing heading south to the bridge. typical as the crew cleared right around spencer and the arrow at the top shows a little bit of slowing for highway 37, just barely starting to show. any signs through concord for westbound highway four. no drama. we're looking at the one incident in fremont northbound 680, the exclamation point in the middle of the screen right around the auto mall parkway here. just before that, there's some police activity in the right lane because of something going on off of the freeway. as we get a
5:33 am
look here, the travel times vasco road still just 19 minutes. that's a great drive out of contra costa county and down to alameda county. and 580 back to you. thank you very much, mike. 532 right now happening today round two for the man who brutally attacked nancy pelosis husband. jury selection begins in his state trial. this is just days after david depape received a 30 year federal sentence. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is joining us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger, it sounds like there's actually a lot more to play out in both of these cases. that is correct, laura. good morning to you. the conviction for that federal case has been decided for some time now. it happened back in november of last year. david depape has been sentenced for two counts in his federal case. he will serve 30 year, a 30 year sentence and serve that concurrently. for those two counts. that sentence was handed down last friday morning, but not long after prosecutors filed this motion requesting to reopen
5:34 am
sentencing to give depape the opportunity to speak for himself. the court granted the government's motion and set today as the deadline for a response from depape. the reopened sentencing hearing is set for next tuesday, may 28th. the defense has submitted their appeal to the sentence in that federal case as well. now also happening today, as you mentioned, jury selection into perhaps state case where he faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse, among others. legal expert stephen clark says the recent sentencing in the federal case may be influential in today's jury selection. the big argument in state court is, was this attempted murder or assault with a deadly weapon? how the jury now in state court will look at the case involving mr. depape when they know he's already serving a significant federal sentence? will be interesting to see, because this is a very high profile case, and
5:35 am
those jurors coming to judge him in state court will be mindful of this sentence. well, those jurors will be will at least start to be selected this morning. that happens here at the hall of justice in san francisco. also that deadline for depape to respond to the reopening of sentencing that is due from the his defense attorneys by noon today. so on both fronts, laura several things to watch out for. our team of reporters will be there to give updates throughout throughout the day. we'll update you on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. as we laura, as we've been following it since the very beginning. ginger, thanks for the latest. well, new this morning. an unexpected roadblock for the planned upgrade to the clipper card program. now this is used by transit commuters everywhere across the bay area. by this summer, it was supposed to become much easier to pay. today in the bay bob redell live for us in dublin. over at the bart station, there. okay, so bob, what happened here? well, good
5:36 am
morning to vargas. frankly, the technology isn't working yet. now, anyone who wants to ride bart, muni, ac, transit or any other transit agencies in our area, you can still use a contactless payment, but it must be through a virtual clipper card. this summer, the metropolitan transportation commission, which oversees our region's mass transit, was supposed to launch a system that would allow people to bypass clipper and just tap a credit or debit card instead directly, which has already been successfully deployed in places like new york and london. so this would allow our transit agencies to offer free transfers, would make travel on our busses, trains and ferries. ferries easier for people from out of town and would just make travel easier overall. again, without having to take that extra step of loading a virtual clipper card. so what happened? well, muni, caltrain and a few other agencies, they did run a pilot program of this new
5:37 am
payment system, which was actually supposed to be called clipper two. they did this recently, and the mtc discovered that integrating clipper two is much more difficult than first realized. after compiling data and test results from this pilot, we've identified issues that need to be resolved before we can continue to the next phase of testing. so based on what we've learned, we the start of customer transition is going to be deferred beyond the summer of 2024. the mtc is expected to issue a report this september on what progress if any, it's made on the new clipper two system last month, you might recall, bart implemented new clipper card readers at some stations here in the east bay to make paying for transit faster and more convenient, but it had the opposite effect. riders complained that the new technology, that new reader actually took a few seconds longer to read their cards. and if you're trying to buzz through a fare gate, a few seconds is an
5:38 am
eternity, bart told the chronicle that it was working with its vendor to fix that issue, reporting live here outside dublin, bart bob redell today in the bay. all right, looking for that change to come sooner rather than later. bob redell for us this morning. thanks, bob. investigators in san francisco are now quickly trying to determine if a fire that destroyed a multi-level home is tied to recent racist threats made against one of the people who lived there. flames yesterday morning engulfed the building in alamo square at grove and fillmore. first responders had to rescue two people. the parents of terry williams. he's the same man who recently received racist packages, including a doll with a noose and extremely hateful messages. the incident remains unsolved. williams is just hoping the fire is unrelated. i don't know, i wasn't here, i can't say i don't, i'm just hoping, man, that it wasn't that man. i'm just hoping. i'm just hoping, man, because. right now i don't know what to expect. i don't know how to think, man.
5:39 am
it's like i feel like i let my parents down, man, because i wasn't here. williams is a well known dog walker in the neighborhood and was actually at city hall talking with mayor breed when the fire started. his father has now been released from the hospital. his mother is still there for observation. well, fremont leaders are looking for answers to help solve a growing neighborhood conflict involving residents and the unhoused living in their rvs. those rvs are easy to see in the community of irvington. many parked for the long term. some residents filled him in and say that the generators are often loud and create health issues. last night, council members discussed the final draft of a new response plan. data shows that two thirds of unhoused in fremont living there are in their vehicles, and leaders say that affordable housing is not keeping pace right now. is this legal for them to be parked? this is a public street. and so with the public street, unless you change the rules to say that you cannot park there, they can park. there might be a great amount of tax, great amount of parcels tax to
5:40 am

some mid 70s and sunshine. and we know it's not just the ceremony. we're going out to eat, we're having parties, we're taking pictures, all of that stuff. and over the next few days it gets even cooler with temperatures in the upper 70s tomorrow and then upper 60s on friday. to all of those graduates, we have beautiful weather across the bay area as we're heading into the last few days of school. for a lot of kids, as well as a lot of summer events kicking off and festivals. so we're going to see temperatures feeling very nice and comfortable over the next few days. and mike, you also wanted to talk about graduations today. yes, carrie, specifically su san jose state, as you've been talking about. first of all, we're looking at no surprises. so right on schedule, one on one shows a little bit of slowing through san jose as we'd expect more slowing through san jose state to area today, tomorrow, the next day because of those graduation ceremonies. here's state perimeter is fourth, 10th, the san fernando. and over here, as you're looking through the area around state, there will be congestion as well
