one of them is completely flipped over and what's left of these homes to my right. you can see in the background that's a hospital that appears largely untouched. we also have new drone video that our crew just shot on the ground. this destruction goes on for several blocks. authorities in iowa confirming multiple fatalities and more video showing just stunning damage that was left behind. >> there she is, tornado on the ground. >> reporter: this morning, devastation in the heartland after deadly twisters and violent storms. at least 18 tornadoes tearing across iowa with more in wisconsin and minnesota. toppling trees, knocking over cars, even knocking over a semitruck. and the twisters ripping through wind farms. turbines crumbling and destroying entire neighborhoods. it took a direct hit from a large tornado with one official

saying most of the town is gone. >> we watched it go over. as soon as we could get out of there, i went home. i checked on my wife and daughter. covered up a couple windows. then i come over to my son's house, and his is way worse than mine. >> reporter: many homes destroyed like this farmhouse. the owners yelling from help from under the degree. are you hurt? >> reporter: this man pinned under rubble when a storm hit without warning. >> i tried to run into the house. got hit with some debris, and it dropped me. so i just turtled up behind the house and then the whole garage fell on me. i was probably under it for a half hour. >> reporter: tuesday's onslaught the latest bout of recent weather in recent weeks. following storm related power outages there. a run of extreme weather that simply isn't letting up.

and back here in iowa again, the stories you just heard as horrifying as the damage which goes on for several blocks. iowa's governor declaring a state of emergency in at least 15 counties across the state. if this spring seems like it's been relentless, the numbers ar. that is twice the average for this time of year. savannah? >> all right, maggie, thank you. we want to turn to al now. confirming that. last month nationwide we saw close to 400 reported tornadoes, and that's price the average for this time of year. savannah? >> maggie, thank you. we want to turn to al now. millions remain on alert. >> guys, we're not done yet. you can see we have heavier showers and thunderstorms also through the central plains. as this front pushes through, we we are looking at storms erupting ahead of the cold front. isolated flash flood potential. we've got from syracuse, new york all the way to austin, texas 44 million people at risk, damaging winds and tornadoes possible.

the biggest risk, though, two-inch or more hail from tyler, texas. tomorrow those storms will run from boston to washington, d.c. also that severe risk comes back to the plains. severe weather stretching from new england all the way down into texas and up into the north central plains with tornadoes possible. heaviest rain is down to the south. waco, texas into memphis. and heavier showers as you get into the appalachians. guys, the risk not over yet. another 24 hours. >> all right, al, thank you. we'll check back with you in just a bit. this morning we are learning about the sudden and severe turbulence that hit a singapore airlines jet yesterday. dozens of people were hurt on that plane. 20 of them still in intensive care. this morning nbc's tom costello is covering aviation for us. tom, that turbulence is nothing unusual, but nothing this extreme. >> this was extremely violent. this plane was at 37,000 feet

and suddenly it was like riding a very, very dramatic wave, up and down. up hundreds of feet, down hundreds of feet. the people inside that plane being thrown about. the pilot then made a quick o b. breaking this morning descent, and this is over myanmar, thailand. he needed an emergency divert to bangkok. breaking this morning after that dramatic turbulence, the airlines ceo is speaking out. >> we are deeply saddened by this incident. >> reporter: this extreme turbulence wreaked havoc inside the plane, injuring dozens of passengers and flight attendants, some critically. one hospital says it treated 71 patients, roughly a third of those onboard. one passenger widely identified as 73-year-old geoff kitchen

died. an airport official says the passenger suffered from a heart condition. four americans were also onboard, a family on its way to a convention. the boeing 777 was flying from london to singapore when it hit sudden turbulence on the edge of a powerful storm. data shows the plane suddenly pushed up, then down. like a violent wave at 37,000 feet. then a controlled emergency descent to 31,000 feet and then an emergency landing. firefighters and medics rushed in removing victims on backboards. inside the plane, evidence of a terrifying flight. overhead panels flipped off. food and bottles on the floor. bloodstains on the feeling. andrew was a passenger. so-called clear air turbulence often appearing close to the jet stream is very difficult to predict. researchers say climate change

has already made wind sheer much stronger. >> so if you imagine the air flow over this wing experiencing a sudden updraft, this wing will be pushed up violently and instantaneously and the airline will tilt to the left. >> reporter: pilots radio turbulence reports from the e s fallen on them, and that's why we tell people to protect yourself and the people around you and keep that seat belt fastened even when the seat belt sign isn't on. >> reporter: this is so important. cockpit. unbuckled flight attendants who are up and moving are most likely to be injured. >> we have seen people have broken limbs because someone else has fallen on them. that's why we tell people to protect yourself and the people around you. keep that seat belt fastened, even when the seat belt sign is not. >> reporter: yeah, this is so important. infants should not be in a parent's arms because in extreme turbulence the g forces will full that child out of your arms. the child, the infant itself, should be in a car seat strapped into a plane seat. that's critical. if you want to avoid the worst of the turbulence, sit right in the middle of the plane if you can. back to you. >> all right. that's some good advice. what kind of impact, tom, did this turbulence have on the

plane itself? >> reporter: so on this particular plane, the structural integrity of the plane was fine. and that's important because planes, military, commercial planes, they're both tested to withstand the incredible g forces of extreme turbulence. they literally bend the wings back in this testing. really, they are huge, huge test chambers to make sure they can withstand turbulence. but that doesn't keep you in your seat. you have to be buckled in. >> tom, thanks. the end of donald trump's criminal hush money trial is in sight. testimony wrapped up yesterday. the former president not among them. the jury sent them until next tuesday when closing arguments are expected to begin. laura jarett has been through the courtroom and was there

again yesterday. an important, a little bit nerdy and wonky, but an important moment as the lawyers and judge yesterday started hammering out the jury instructions, the instructions on the law that will kind of give a road map to the jury on how to decide the case. >> yeah. you shouldn't need to go to law school to decide this case. the instructions are supposed to take what's really complicated and make it simple. these instructions are really messy.e messy. >> the thing about this case has always what the judge did yesterday was hand the prosecution some real victories on those instructions. >> let's talk about that. because the thing about this case has always been business records falsification. it is a misdemeanor. it only gets to be a felony if it's done in furtherance of some other crime. the judge is now saying what that other crime is, but it's very interesting the ruling. can you explain why this was so favorable to prosecutors. >> we have never really heard any specific articulation of what that second crime is. prosecutors said, we don't need to. now they have to spell it out a little bit. the judge made it clear. when they are describing the

second crime, and say it's an election-related crime, and that's one of the things they floated out there. you needed to have some unlawful means for the way you carried out that election crime. the judge yesterday saying the jury doesn't have to be unanimous when it comes to what that unlawful means. usually it has to be all 12 in agreement. if the jury doesn't have to be unanimous, you could have 12 different theories of what the unlawful means. that's why it is a real victory for the prosecutors. >> the other had to do with what donald trump's lawyers could argue. donald trump can't say, i just listened to my lawyer, michael cohen. >> his argument all along has been cohen is my lawyer. we put it down as legal expenses. there was no falsification. there was no fraud here. but the judge saying he doesn't get to actually make a formal argument. he could say he understood he was his attorney, but he's not going to get to argue advice of counsel. that's taking another bullet that they had in their arsenal

away from them. >> a lot of people think it may be the ball game, may be the make or break and it went the prosecutor's way and it was not lost on donald trump who lashed out at the judge again. >> he has taken multiple swipes at this judge throughout the trial. what he did today was a little bit different. take a look at this. >> judge hates donald trump. take a look. take a look at them. take a look at where he comes n columbia, abut he has been from. >> okay. so he was born in columbia, but he has been here since he was 6. he is for all purposes a new york resident through and through. much like the judge is hearing his case in florida, also born in columbia. he has not lashed out at her. it might be the case that he has now alienated both of these judges. obviously, she's had a number of favorable rulings in front of him. but this is not the argument you want to be doing when these two judges are hearing such

important cases. >> laura, a lot to unpack there. thank you very much. let's turn to the war in gaza. the delivery and aid from a floating pier installed by the u.s. military has been put on hold. and now the united nations is suspending food distribution in the southern city, gaza city of rafah. raf sanchez has the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. israel is pushing back from those allegations of war crimes, allegations it is deliberately starving people in gaza. it says it is allowing people in by land, sea and air. aid groups are saying as long as the fighting continues, there is no safe way to get that food to the people that need it. now even aid delivered by the u.s. military is struggling to get through. with no sign israel's military offensive in rafah is slowing, the u.n. overnight suspending

food distribution in southern gaza, saying it's short on supplies and it's too dangerous. the north updating on that floating pier built by the u.s. military, saying so far none of the aid delivered through it has reached hungry residents. it comes after the prosecutor of the international criminal court accused benjamin netanyahu of deliberately starving the people of gaza, an allegation he denied to msnbc's stephanie ruhle. >> we have enabled air drops. we've enable maritime roots and building a port, and the whole thing of a deliberate starvation policy is ridiculous. >> reporter: israel is pushing back against the dramatic move overnight by three of the u.s.'s european allies that say they're recognizing an independent palestinian state. saying peace can only come through a two state solution, calling the move a gift to hamas and iran. tensions increase abroad, israel seizing camera equipment from the associated press, a u.s. news agency, only to back down after pressure from the white

house. the israeli government saying ap footage of gaza was being used by al jazeera, which is now banned in israel. three years ago, israel bombed an office building used by both the ap and al jazeera saying hamas was operating out of it. now, the white house believes the rest route to sustainable peace is if israel agrees to a palestinian state and in return a peace deal with saudi arabia. but secretary of state, antony blinken, speaking in front of a committee yesterday says it's not clear if israel is willing to take that deal. >> all right. raf, thank you. iran's supreme leader presided over a funeral this morning for the country's late president, foreign minister and others killed in that helicopter crash. the ayatollah held the service

>> and the bill is finally passed. >> louisiana lawmakers moving forward with a plan to put two abortion drugs in the same category as so-called controlled dangerous substances like depressants and stimulants, criminalizing the possession, used to induce abortions without anyone over abortions. >> when over aoeublgts over utilized, this drug can be incredibly harmful. >> his sister was given an abortion pill while pregnant without her consent. >> i will simply say when you are a bad actor in possession of these pills that you should be held accountable. >> reporter: critics question how the states could enforce the proposal and how it could have chilling effects. >> let me tell you something. 50th in maternal outcomes is not pro life. >> reporter: 280 louisiana doctors in a letter say reclassifying the drugs is not scientifically based and creates

confusion and misinformation, considering the drugs are also used after miscarriages and to induce labor. >> only a small percentage of the time are they utilized for abortion care. >> reporter: louisiana already has one of the most restrictive laws in the country, banning ri abortion laws, raising the political stakes on reproductive rights heading into negative. former president trump in a ne medication and surgical abortions with no exceptions for rape and insist, only for the life of the mother. since the overturning of roe v. wade, more than a dozen states put in place stricter abortion laws, raising the stakes on reproductive rights in november. former president trump in a new interview first opening the door on restrictions on birth control. >> do you support any restrictions on a person's right to contraception? >> i will have a policy on that shortly. i think it is something you will find interesting. >> reporter: but hours later backing off, making clear on his social media platform, he does not support a ban on birth control and will never advocate for one. the biden campaign quickly seized those comments from donald trump given that access is widely possible.

later today, oakland mayor shengtao will lay out the city's plan to sell its stake in the oakland coliseum. news came out this morning. the city is making the deal with the same group now trying to redevelop it. the african american sports and entertainment group, a local group of investors, the chronicle reports the city will receive a minimum $105 million payment. alameda county has already sold its 50% stake in the coliseum to the oakland a's. the team so far is not issuing a comment. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where later this morning, jury selection will begin for the man who has been convicted of brutally assaulting the husband of nancy pelosi. that is happening in his state case. this happens just days after david depape received a 30 year sentence for the federal case set against him. jury selection begins at 9 a.m. this morning at the hall of justice. here in san francisco. kerri has been keeping tabs on our forecast for us this week, and we've already made it past the peak of the temperatures, and we're going to

>> it has been seven months since he was found nonresponsive in his house in los angeles. now authorities are hoping to pinpoint who gave him the drugs that caused his death. >> nbc's entertainment ketamine. now law enforcement is trying to figure out how such a large amount of that drug got into his possession. this morning a new twist in the investigation correspondent, chloe melas, joins us in studio with the latest. >> good morning, hoda. matthew perry's autopsy report revealed in december that he died from the acute effects of ketamine. now law enforcement is trying to figure out how such a large amount of that drug got into his possession. this morning a new twist in the investigation into the death of "friends" star matthew perry. the lapd telling nbc news it is working with the drug enforcement administration and the u.s. postal inspection service to investigating the circumstances of perry's death. he was found unresponsive in a hot tub. the l.a. county medical

examiner's office said perry died from an overdose of ketamine. he was on infusion therapy for depression and anxiety. he wrote about it in his 2022 memoire. >> ketamine felt like a giant exhale. they would bring me into a room and sit me down and put headphones on me so i could listen to phmusic, blindfold me and put an iv in. >> but it could not have been from his last therapy session, which was a week and a half before he died. and the level found in his blood was equivalent to the amount used for general anesthesia. two sources close to perry tell us they have been interviewed and say authorities are trying to determine how perry came into possession of so much ketamine and want to track down any clinics or drug dealers he used. despite the joy he brought playing chandler bing on

"friends," perry's struggling with addiction were no secret. admitting at one point he was taking five prescription drugs a day. >> it has nothing to do with weakness. it is a disease we have. o get, day you might. >> now law enforcement looking for anyone who may have played a role in perry's recent drug >> reporter: his stepfather, "dateline"'s keith more, opening up about perry's death in march. >> did it surprise you? >> it was the news you never want to get, but you think some day you might. >> now law enforcement looking for anyone who may have played a role in perry's recent drug abuse that ended so tragically. >> so chloe, what sparked this investigation and why are they doing it now? >> when you read the autopsy report from december, it says matthew perry actually reduced the amount of ketamine infusions he was undergoing as part of his anxiety and depression treatment. that the last infusion he had received was about a week and a half before. but let's juxtapose that with the levels found in his system at the time of the autopsy,

it's fleet week here in new york city. very excited about that. >> we have an inspiring story for you tomorrow on "today." we're shining a light on the barrier breaking admiral who made history. the very first woman ever to lead the u.s. navy. she will join us live. >> she's a member of the joint chiefs of staff as well. let's get to your news at 8:00. devastating tornadoes that ripped through parts of the northwest and left multiple people dead. and that severe weather is not over. nearly 50 million people are in the storm zone today. al has his eye on it for us. first let's go to maggie vespa in greenfield, iowa with a closer look at the destruction. we can see it right there. >> reporter: yeah, good morning from a largely destroyed greenfield, iowa. you can look at this house over here. it's jaw dropping. it is obliterated.

the second story is completely gone along with that front corner. you can see the suv tossed into the front lawn here. our crew shot drone video earlier this morning that shows this destruction in greenfield just goes on for blocks. we have seen destruction like this since last night. yesterday at least 18 reported tornadoes across iowa with more in minnesota and wisconsin. southwest of here, storm chasers kept rolling as they ran, cameras in hand, to try and pull people from underneath the rubble of a destroyed, collapsed home. and then elsewhere, a wind farm was completely destroyed. we have stunning video from that because one of the turbines collapsed and curled in an itself and then caught fire, something we haven't seen in this crazy succession of storms across the country. here in iowa, specifically, state authorities are confirming multiple fatalities and injuries from the storm. we're still waiting on details from those. the state's governor declaring a state of emergency in at least 15 counties. she is expected to come here to greenfield later today to tour this jaw dropping damage.

>> maggie, thank you. the storm is not over yet. millions in the path. let's bring in al with the very latest. good morning. unfortunately, we're looking at more storms firing up, especially from kansas all the way into oklahoma, with strong storms right now crossing over oklahoma city. we have a risk of severe weather from the northeast into texas for damaging wind. tornadoes possible. and we're looking at damaging hail as. and then tomorrow, 20 million people at risk from the northeast. but the biggest threat will be dallas, shreveport, memphis, kansas city. tornadoes possible. in fact, even likely. damaging hail at two and a half inches. and the heat is on. we are talking heat advisories for parts of southern texas, from the big bend all the way down into brownsville. look at these temperatures. these are heat indexes. brownsville, new orleans into the mid to upper 90s.

tampa flirting with 100 and high 90-degree heat indexes through miami as well. so heat is going to be a big problem going into the weekend, guys. >> all right, al. we'll come back to you in a few minutes. meanwhile, allies of former president trump pled not guilty in arizona yesterday. they are accused in an alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state. those charged included trump lawyer rudy giuliani, who was ordered to post a $10,000 bail and come to arizona for booking within 30 days. 10 others pled not guilty to conspiracy, forgery and fraud charges. some of those charged in the arizona case have also been arraigned on similar charges in georgia. new developments this morning in a story involving ian ziering. two people have been arrested. those chaotic moments were caught on a cell phone camera.

oh, we are back. it is 8:36 with our ongoing series "screen time." this morning, there's a closer look at the movement to ban cell phones in schools. >> it is a sensitive subject. but more and more research shows the benefits are well worth it. >> this is the story we have been waiting for all day. vicky nguyen visited a school district in ohio saying no to phones. >> it is such an important conversation and there are so many ways to come at it. good morning to you. school leaders at the dayton public school district decided to ban all cell phones from middle and high school campuses during school hours. now as the school year comes to a close, they're seeing improvements in reading, math

and social interaction between students. here is how they're making it work. before the bell rings, students at dunbar high school in ohio placed their phones into these envelopes. >> the morning are just like pus tsa, bags, purses, food. >> reporter: most students have gotten used to the new norm, but some still try to sneak in their cell in a hidden pocket, a bag of chips or a book with a foam-shaped cutout, but this one takes the takeout container. yep, that's a phone under the chicken. language arts teacher and football coach is part of the morning check-in crew. do you have to laugh to yourself sometimes? >> oh, we have a good time. we have a good time. it's fun to me now. >> reporter: the district leading the charge in a national battle in education to keep phones out of schools, and their mission is spreading like wildfire. lawmakers in at least 10 states are already introducing or

passing bills to ban the devices. >> number of ohio schools have made the decision to eliminate smartphone use during the school day. and i believe clearly that is the right decision. [ applause ] >> reporter: spanish teacher essence wright says it wasn't enough to ask students to keep their phones off or in their backpacks. what is going on with the phones in the classroom before this ban went into effect? >> constant notifications. constant notifications. >> reporter: what does that do to learning? >> it interrupts the whole process. it really does. >> now you have to address it or you need to have an administrative moment in your classroom that could have all been avoided if it didn't exist. >> reporter: and now it doesn't. students don't have their phones from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. when school is dismissed. hear that? it is the sound of students at lunch talking to each other and playing games.

>> when we were allowed to have our phones, at lunch it used to be silent and like nobody would talk. >> reporter: these seniors say they understand the reasons for the cell phone ban. raise your hand if your parents would say you are addicted to your phones. >> that's all she'd say. >> reporter: do you think your mental health is stronger because of this cell phone ban? >> uh-huh. >> definitely. >> yes. >> reporter: but it doesn't mean they always liked it. i'm used to always having it in my pocket and so for it to be teaken away, it's almost like losing a limb. >> reporter: you weren't happy in the beginning. now it's been almost a full school year. has that perspective changed? >> i didn't see a reason for them taking away the phones. but as the time passed, i have seen the benefits from it, how much effect it's had on classroom. >> reporter: new data reinforces what educators call common sense. researchers found that students saw higher gpas, and more than a 40% decrease in bullying

incidents. some parents worry about not being able to reach their kids in an emergency. david lawrence is the dayton public schools superintendent. when parents who push back and say there is an emergency, i need to reach my child during the day, what do you say? >> i say we have always done a good job to prepare for emergencies and contact parents in a way that's meaningful and pretty swift based on the emergency. >> reporter: it looks pretty low tech what you are doing. >> it is. an envelope. you can buy them at a convenience store. so you put them in the envelope, store them and give them back. it is really easy. >> reporter: what would be your advice to other school leaders watching this and wondering if they should implement this into their school? >> i would say that it's cost effective, quick, simple and easy. >> reporter: 7 hours of phone free time might be the best thing that's happened to education in a long time. >> they are actually being children. that's exactly what we want them to be. these are the last years of their childhood. we want them to live them.

giant uno. think about the last years of their childhood. that's an important point. and the superintendent says early testing has already shown increases across reading and math for every single grade, 7th through 12th. he's really encouraged by those results. he wants to begin studying the mental health as well. >> first of all, that is an incredible story that shows it can be done. it can be done quickly. effect of the cell phone ban over time and on students' mental health as well. >> first of all, that is an incredible story that shows it can be done. it can be done quickly. yeah. >> cheaply. >> yeah, cheaply. >> if a kid gets busted with a phone, what happens? >> this isn't meant to be draconian. you get three chances. on the fourth time, your parent has to come to school to get that phone back. after the fifth time, it is a two-day suspension. they give you a grace period. >> that's very fair. >> for the most part, kids are getting a hold of it. >> it was great to hear from the students in that story as well because even the kids are acknowledging now, i am addicted to my phone. it does prevent me from learning. it seems like a no-brainer.

>> i bet you there's some relief. the kids are mad at first but then relieved to have that decision taken away and now we can just interact. >> what is wonderful about it, and what i'm dealing with with my middle schoolers, at least, is if you don't have it and i don't have it, then it's easier. it is hard when half the parents are buying into it and the other half don't because it feels unfair. >> that's why the movements with kids our age when we are trying to get a cohort of saying let's not let our kids be the only one. if we can all agree, then you are not socially ostracized. >> 40% reduction in bullying. 40%. >> someone told me there was a group text of girls. somebody got a text. they didn't read it. they didn't like it. and it distracted her the rest of the school day. she read it in between classes and threw her off all day. remove phones and remove that extra element you don't need. >> and not in your backpack either because you know it's there. >> good story. >> that was great. really great. >> way to go, ohio!
