businesses and entire communities, the national weather service is out today surveying the damage, 21 reported tornadoes, one each in minnesota, nebraska. 18 across iowa. >> the town of greenfield, iowa, saw the worst of it, the tornado there was just given a preliminary rating of ef-3. iowa state patrol say there is are multiple injuries and deaths. >> meteorologist bill karins is tracking the new threat of storms rolling in today but we'll start with correspondent shaquille brewster in hard-hit greenfield. what are you hearing from people. ? >> reporter: you've been seeing devastation. we're on the town limits because essentially law enforcement is not letting anyone in unless they are a resident. but we were able to go in with a police escort. some video we saw from inside. you see homes completely removed from their foundations, you saw

cars flipped over, i spoke to one woman who was trapped in her basement, listen to a little bit of our conversation. >> pulled me right out and everything was on top of me. >> how long were you stuck under your house. >> about 45 minutes. >> 45 minutes in. >> at one time they didn't think i was down there and i kept hollering, i am here, nobody could hear me. i could hear them over here. >> reporter: imagine that, yelling as she was trapped in a basement after this tornado tore through this town of about 2,000 people the governor said they're still doing assessment, still search and rescue, multiple people were killed, law enforcement not putting a specific number on that just yet and remember this is all part of a system that just didn't hit iowa but also touched states like nebraska, wisconsin and is now making its way east.

>> bill, as shaq mentioned the direction of this storm next where are the threats today. >> tornado threats are lower today. we still have a lot of people at risk of severe storms, wind, hail and isolated tornadoes anywhere from western new york back to the ohio valley, mississippi river valley, into areas of central texas, this enhanced risk, the chance of seeing not just wind damage and large hail but isolated tornadoes, this area in red, for that reason, storms are popping up and the storm prediction system has issued a tornado watch for waco. north texas, under severe thunderstorm watches. isolated strong storms will continue well after sunset the worst storms have been north of

dallas and they're kind of sitting here and lingering and that's always a problem especially if the soil is saturated. we have flash flood warning for sherman texas, north of dallas. additional rainfall, another 1 to 3 inches possible from waco all the way through northern louisiana, southern arkansas, that's where these storms will head as we go throughout later portions of tomorrow. we want to avoid that destruction. >> bill karins, shaquille brewster, thank you both. music mogul sean combs is facing a new lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault. >> drugged and assaulted her in 2003 at his recording studio here in new york city the woman said she had a quote moral obligation to speak up after a series of abuse allegations against combs. nbc news has reached out to combs and his representatives for comment we haven't heard back. the suit comes just a few days

after combs apologized after a video surfaced of him attacking his ex-girlfriend in 2016. >> these allegations are from more than 20 years ago, yet the lawsuit was filed just yesterday, could that be a problem, this time gap? >> in new york like many other states has increasingly increased the statute of limitations, statutory pause button if events have happened. new york has enlarged the statute of limitations, they have may filed timely under new york law, believe me, the defense will be looking to see whether or not they complied with the statute that would be the most obvious way to get the case tossed. >> statute of limitations, translation, the window can file complaints and lawsuits. >> we pick abarbitrary date where you can't file anymore, witnesses died, evidence fades.

>> let's talk about the number of lawsuits diddy is facing right now, this is the sixth lawsuit filed against him. he's denied any wrongdoing. but he did settle one case with cassie ventura. he apologized once that video was released. the totality of the lawsuits against him the fact that there's supposedly according to sources that have spoken to nbc news an investigation into him relating to trafficking. >> what happens next has to be a hot of damage control on diddy's team. as soon as this video came out, both videos, the apology as well, there would be other lawsuits, not because they're related to the assault video, alleged assault video but for an optics standpoint, if you're a plaintiff and you want to get to a defendant who has a pr disaster on their hands this would be the best time to file a

civil lawsuit and lo and behold here it is. not passing judgment on the merits, i have no idea of the merits, timing-wise this would be the best time to sue diddy. this morning, three more european nations said they would recognize a palestinian state in a political blow to israel over its war in gaza. >> ireland, norway and spain each announced the news this morning, though most of western europe and the united states do not. nbc news international correspondent josh lederman is following this for us, josh, explain to people what this means recognizing a palestinian state in a practical sense. >> reporter: more and more of the world, ellison, is saying that israel's stance that it's not going to consider a palestinian state hood given the events of october 7th is not acceptable internationally. on the ground it doesn't mean much of anything, some

two-thirds of the u.n. nations already recognize palestinian statehood and it doesn't mean that palestinians have a state, so in the short term nothing will change. we're hearing from the white house in a statement reiterating their position while they support palestinian statehood they don't want to see it happen through yuan late rally recognition, they want to see peace, but the fact of the matter is, netanyahu has doubled down on his position that there cannot be palestinian statehood in order for the safety of israelis who live in israel and so clearly this is going to increase the pressure diplomatically on israel to try and change their view on that but so far no signs that israel is going to consider this. they've been furious about this decision, recalling ambassadors from these countries. >> josh, let's talk about state of humanitarian aid in gaza, we're learning aid from that

floating pier built by the u.s. military has been slow to be delivered and that the u.n. is now suspending food distribution in rafah, why exactly is that happening and are people in gaza getting the aid they need. >> reporter: the issues that are preventing aid are many at this point, but as far as the aid coming in on that u.s.-built pier, they didn't think any aid had gotten to people. but the white house has said some gotten through. they say the problem is not getting it into gaza it's getting it to the people who need it. getting aid groups to safely distribute it. they're mobbing the aid trucks as soon as they enter the gaza strip, that's been the problem over the land routes, too, they've seen hundreds of trucks cross over the border in recent days but just a drop in the bucket compared to the massive

humanitarian need on the ground there. let's turn now to the money minute. the biden administration is forgiving more student loan debt. >> and new emojis could be coming to your phone. the white house announced another $7.7 billion in student loans will be forgiveness for about 160,000 borrowers. borrowers approved through the save plan. when you factor all of this in, the white house said 4.75 million americans will have seen their loans cancelled. layoffs under way at disney's pixar studios. about 14% of the studio's workforce will be cut. the layoffs were expected but delayed because of production schedule. disney is still scheduling to make a real splash at the box

nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer is now beginning his state trial. david depape assaulted him. steve patterson with more here, so steve, we know there was already that federal trial that was settled, what happened in court today that relates to the state charges. >> reporter: jury selection is under way. federal trial focused on how heinous crimes can affect the ability of federal official to do her job. the crimes itself, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, about five charges in total, amount to life in prison without the possibility of parole if he's convicted. jury selection started today. >> steve, the associated press have a report talking about the federal judge setting a new

hearing for depape after he was sentenced last week, do we know why that's something being discussed. >> reporter: the judge screwed up and she admitted as such. hearing last week, a sentencing hearing, 30 years behind bars for the assault of paul pelosi, the attempted kidnapping of nancy pelosi, the judge failed to ask if depape had anything to add, was there apology, there's rescheduling for a sentencing. . the defense of depape may ask for a new judge. >> steve patterson, thank you. a major legal win today for the family of music legend elvis presley, a judge in tennessee blocked a plan foreclosure aix of the iconic graceland home. riley keough has been trying to stop what she says a fraudulent

scheme to auction off her grandfather's property. walk us through what the judge did today. >> reporter: the judge actually issued a continuance which means that he would hear this injunction hearing at a later date, yet to be determined, because he wanted to give an opportunity to the defense to respond to these allegations from riley keough, elvis' granddaughter, what she's saying is that the creditor behind these foreclosure claims actually used documents that has forged signatures from her mother, lisa marie presley, now riley actually took virtual control over the graceland estate last year when her mother lisa marie presley passed away and she sees saying the creditor that lisa marie presley took out a loan back in 2018 which she failed to repay and she actually used the deed of trust for the

graceland property as collateral but now riley is saying that her mother never took out that loan, she never used graceland as collateral and in addition to the court documents she submitted there was an affidavit from notary based in florida who, her name is on those couples and she said she's never spoken to lisa marie presley and she never notarized any of those documents. we reached out to the company at the center of this, they haven't gotten. >> can you talk about the significance of graceland to memphis? >> reporter: elvis bought the graceland property back in 1957 and he spent the last 20 years of his life on that property. he's buried on the 14-acre estate and it's turned into a

city's budget problems, but he says three biggest issues facing oakland right now a budget deficit homelessness and crime, which he says has risen since he was fired by oakland mayor sheng tao when he was the police chief of this city back in february of 2023. she fired him because of alleged misconduct in the police department when he was chief earlier this year, armstrong sued the city for wrongful termination. armstrong claims he was fired by the mayor in retaliation for his speaking out about alleged misconduct by the federal monitor overseeing the oakland police department. she made a decision. obviously, i felt like it was not the right decision and i've taken legal stands as a result of that. but throughout my entire time, i have not criticized the mayor. i have not been critical publicly about the mayor. i'm here to do a job and serve the public, and that's why i continue to say we have to get beyond the petty going back and forth. it's about the people we need to focus on, the people of oakland and try to

bring solutions that improve the city of oakland. what a beautiful city to see. struggling to the degree it is right now. and if i can bring anything to the city that helps make it better, then that's what i'm willing to do. the mayor has said she fired armstrong because she says she lost confidence in the police chief after he and the department failed to properly investigate and discipline a sergeant who was involved in a hit and run with his patrol car, and who, in a separate incident, fired his service weapon inside an elevator at police headquarters not far from where we're at here at city hall. i did reach out to the mayor's office this morning for a reaction to the chief announcing his candidacy for the city council member at large position have not yet received a response here at oakland city hall. bob redell nbc bay area news. thank you. bob. here are some other stories you need to know about in oakland. the coliseum is about to have a partial new owner in fremont, a growing dispute between homeowners and the unhoused. and in san francisco. so the strange way toxic chemicals ended up at

an elementary school. we're going to begin in oakland, though the city is firming up plans to sell its stake in the coliseum, the oakland a's already own half of the property. the city is looking to sell the other half to the african american sports and entertainment group. that's a local group of investors who say their plan is to make massive upgrades to the coliseum. a mayor is holding a news conference this afternoon to announce details of this deal. it's expected to be worth a minimum of minimum of $105 million in fremont. city leaders are trying to help some unhappy neighbors. homeowners in irvington are upset about rv's parked in their neighborhood. they say many are their long term and they're complaining about noisy generators. families who live in the rv say they'd like to be somewhere else, but their options are limited. last night, the city council discussed possible solutions and it said funding will be critical and a training exercise in san francisco jail left 20 students at a nearby school sick. it happened yesterday when teams at the county jail in san bruno

used tear gas and pepper spray chemicals. somehow those fumes made their way through air vents to nearby portola elementary school. no one was hospitalized, but many had irritated eyes, throats and noses. the sheriff's office is looking into how that happened. a bit cooler today, but another day of sunny skies and nice temps. here's meteorologist kari hall with more. hi kari, we're enjoying some gorgeous weather across the bay area. take a look at our high temperatures in milpitas as well as gilroy will see a high of 77 today and 82 in east san jose over toward the east bay. we're in the low 80s from walnut creek to danville to martinez and 70s for much of the east bay, from oakland down to fremont. and the farther you go inland, the slightly warmer temperatures you'll feel. but overall, still pretty nice and low 60s expected for half moon bay, while palo alto will be warmer, a high of 79 and upper 60s for downtown and the mission district north bay temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s.

capitol police responded to the scene at 7:45 this morning. following a report of a suspicious package, contained two vials of blood. was cleared by the hazardous incident response division and taken for further investigation. a new zealand man is being fined over a social media video appearing to show him attempting to body slam an orca. you can see man jump off the boat into the water. the country's department of conservation said the video is from february but they were recently alerted about the footage. orcas are protected in new zealand and it's illegal to swim with them. mattel has announced a new line of barbie dolls honoring trail blazing athletes. from around the world. including tennis champion venus williams. the company said it wanted to highlight the impact of sports and fothserring self-conference

and empowerment among the next generation. nearly seven months later, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of "friends" star matthew perry. chloe melas explains why. >> this morning, a new twist in the investigation into the death of "friends" star matthew perry. telling nbc news its working with the drug enforcement administration to investigate the circumstances of perry's death. perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in october. the l.a. county medical examiner's office says perry died from the acute effects of ketamine, a powerful anesthetic approved by the fda. too treat depression under doctor's supervision. but the drug can also be used recreationally. the autopsy reports that perry was on ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety. he wrote about it in his memoir. >> ketamine felt like a giant

exhale. they bring me into the room, sit me down, put headphones on me so i could listen to music, blindfold me and put an iv in. >> reporter: but the autopsy report says the ketamine in his system could not have been from his last therapy session, which was a week and a half before he died. and the level of ketamine found in his blood was the equivalent used for general anesthesia. two sources close to perry who say they have been interviewed by law enforcement tell nbc news authorities are trying to determine how perry came into possession of so much ketamine and want to track down any ketamine drug dealers or clinics he used. >> hi. >> reporter: despite the joy he brought playing chandler bing on "friends," perry's struggles with addiction were no secret. the actor revealing at one point he was taking nearly five dozen prescription pills a day. >> it has nothing to do with weakness, it is a disease he have.

>> reporter: keith morrison opening up about perry's death in march. >> did it surprise you? >> it was the news you never want to get but you think some day you might. >> reporter: now, law enforcement looking for anyone who may have played a role in his drug abuse that ended so tragically. matthew perry wrote in his memoir more than anything helping others is what he wanted to be remembered for and his family is helping him do just that by starting a foundation in his name. >> chloe me will, a, s, thank you. as the prices of new cars keep getting higher, new data shows americans are holding on to their old vehicles a lot longer. the average age of cars in the united states is now 12.6 years old. phil lebeau is here to break it down. phil, other than prices why are people holding on to their cars for so much longer now?

>> reporter: because they can, i mean, these vehicles starting in the late '90s just after 2000 there was a dramatic improvement in reliability of vehicles not only in this country but around the world. as a result, it's not uncommon for someone to have a 15-year-old vehicle or 20-year-old vehicle, if you look at the population after vehicles in the u.s., those that are 16 years or older that's about. there are a lot of people who are driving around in very old vehicles and they're happy to do so because they don't have the monthly payment and they may have a much lower monthly cost on their hands. >> lower monthly costs the reality of old vehicles need to be repaired, is that still more effective than just straight out buying a new car?

coast, where a large number of dead seal pups are washing ashore in an average year, scientists say 700 pups are born, and so far this year, more than 300 pups have washed up on shore. researchers from uc santa cruz are studying the carcasses to determine why they died, whether pesticides or something like the avian flu are to blame. but it could also be just enough not enough food for this booming population. the scientists tracked the sea lions via satellite and find they're going as far south as baja california to feed. my best guess, and it's a guess, is that food availability is down. california sea lion populations are at a historic high, so that there's they're already at a point where they're pretty much maxed out since early may, there's been a spike in sea lions at pier 39 in san francisco. biologists say they're here for the anchovies. there were more than 1000 there at pier 39. the most we've seen in 15 years. you can see it's drawing lots of tourists. the
