the midwest and south. video here showing an apparent tornado marching across central texas. in the city of temple, homes and businesses were ripped to pieces. authorities say one house was struck by lightning, catching fire. and in iowa, five people were killed in tuesday's storms. the national weather service now confirming three powerful tornados tore through the state, leveling more than 200 homes. meanwhile, the same system that struck texas also wreaking havoc in mexico. new video showing severe winds bringing a stage crashing down. nine people, including a child were killed. more than 120 were injured. let's get now to nbc meteorologist angie lassman, who's tracking the latest systems that could bring more potential threats across the country. good morning, angie. >> we continue to see that same kind of pattern here for us as we get through the next couple days, essentially into the weekend. we've already got some of those severe alerts up across parts of

of the plains. notice what happens today and tonight. we're watching for another line of damaging storms to work through parts of the midwest. the area that we're keeping an eye on from chicago to dallas. we're expecting the hail, winds and tornados all on the table here as we get through our day today. looking ahead to potentially trachling today, i think the spots you want to watch, chicago, st. louis, dallas for any delays and a chance for thunderstorms across the southeast. as we look ahead to tomorrow, no surprise. more strong storms expected. tomorrowacross the plains with all the impacts on the table for 16 million people. we look ahead to sunday, and again, this shifts a little further to the east. now we're talking about the severe weather outbreak across the midwest as we gear up for the holiday weekend. blustery winds across the midwest. soggy for parts of the east. hot and humid across the gulf coast. otherwise, sunny and warmer out west, frances. so we continue to see this same

pattern of severe weather sticking with us. >> a tense weekend for those impacted by the storms. now to the legal battle that could change the wayf ticketmaster, accusing the company of having too much control over the live event industry. here's kristine romans. >> reporter: a legal battle ahead that could change the way millions of music fans see their favorite artists. the government suing live nation a year and a half after this. >> i'm not getting tickets. >> reporter: the disastrous rollout of ticket sales for taylor swift's eras tour. at the time, musician miranda hardy shut out from ticketmaster. ♪ ticketmaster ♪ >> reporter: finally getting a ticket from a friend.

> >> it's trincredibly frustratin not having a choice on how you get your tickets. >> reporter: that's why the doj and states are suing live nation. >> it's breaking the law. >> reporter: live nation and ticketmaster merged in 2010 and today control 60% of concert promotions in the u.s., about 80% of primary ticketing at major venues and a growing share of ticket resales. the government calls it an illegal monopoly, selling the tickets, controlling venues and managing the artists. >> ticketing fees, service fees, convenience fees, platinum fees. price master fees. per order fees. >> reporter: live nation's president pushing back on cnbc. >> we fundamentally disagree with all of these allegations. >> reporter: live nation saying the doj suit ignores everything

that's actually responsible for higher ticket prices from increasing production costs to artist popularity to 24-7 online ticket scalping. ♪ and that's the price of happiness ♪ >> reporter: but for miranda, the status quo is unacceptable. >> i hope they're held accountable. i hope it leads to change. >> our thanks to kristine for that report. breaking overnight, a new era for student athletes on the horizon. the ncaa signing off on a deal that could reshape college sports and allow universities to pay players directly. the ncaa board of directors approved terms of a nearly $3 billion settlement for a class action anti-trust lawsuit. the money would be paid out over the next decades to thousands of former and current stooudent athletes. each school would be able to set aside $21 million in revenue to share with athletes each year. as revenues rise, so could the

cap. that is in addition to the nil money already allowed under the current system. however, it's not a done deal yet. the federal judge overseeing the case must still sign off on the agreement. many of the details are still to be determined. police are clearing the recent pro-palestinian encampment at ucla. the standoff happened the same day ucla chancellor gene block testified on capitol hill about the handling of the protest, seemingly unaware of the new demonstration. >> i should emphasize, there is no encampment and no demonstrations that are problematic. >> in a statement thursday, the university put out a statement saying, quote, there is reasonable cause to find that demonstrators' activities are disrupting campus operations. meanwhile, at harvard, hundreds of students walked out of graduation in protest. one student described their semester this way. >> our freedom of speech and our expressions of solidarity became

[ applause ] >> the students were protesting the decision to bar some students who participated in pro-palestinian encampments from getting their degrees. senate republicans have again blocked a bipartisan security bill to crack down on immigration and reduce border crossings. lisa murkowski of alaska was the only republican who voted for the bill. six democrats voted against. it was brought up as an attempt to illustrate republican obstructionism. donald trump has urged allies to brock the compromise, keeping immigration as a winning gop issue come november. louisiana is one step closer to classifying abortion medication as controlled, dangerous substances. lawmakers have sent the first of its kind bill to the governor's desk. and he's expected to sign it into law. our baton rouge affiliate has more on the bill.

>> reporter: the louisiana senate voted overwhelmingly to accept the amendments on a bill that would classify two drugs that can induce abortions as controlled dangerous substances. now that bill heads to the governor's desk where he has indicated he will sign it. louisiana is the first state to take such a step to curb access to mifepristone and another drug. it someone is found to be in possession of the drug without prescription they can face up to five years in prison. the state senator brought the bill originally after his sister was dosed with the abortion drug without knowing, by her husband. >> what could i do to take a pro active step as opposed to a retroactive step of stopping this harmful act from occurring? and i believe that placing this medication into schedule iv is the right step. >> reporter: over 200 doctors wrote a letter to the legislature asking them not to create a barrier for appropriate

treatment. lawmakers fear there will be delays to getting women the medication with the additional guardrails in place. >> i believe this amendment will ultimately lead to hurting health care for women. i did, i just disagree with him on this. and i base my decision on the communications of and concerns that i've received from health care providers throughout this state. >> reporter: the amendments were accepted overwhelmingly by senators. the change in the schedule for these two drugs will go into effect upon signature from the governor. at the capital for your local election headquarters, shannon hoecht. the railroad company part of last year's train derailment in east palestine, ohio has agreed to a settlement with the federal government worth over $300 million. norfolk southern will pay a fine with the rest of the settlement

going to cleanup efforts, continued environmental monitoring and addressing health concerns. they did not admit fault in the settlement but said it was pleased to reach a resolution. we could be in for a record-breaking hurricane season. angie lassman has the new warning from experts. so we have all these storms right now. then we have to brace ourselves for hurricane seen. >> season. >> noaa is preparing us for an active season. we're looking at an 85% chance we'll see an above-normal season. of those, 8 to 13 of them having hurricane status and 4 to 7 major major hurricanes. when it comes to this forecast, this is the greatest number of storms they have ever forecast in their outlook ahead of a season since they've been doing this. that's not nothing. this is something they're expecting because we have really warm sea surface temperatures across the tropical atlantic,

police in kentucky are releasing new video from the arrest of the world's top golfer, scottie scheffler. stephanie gosk has the new images and what we've learned about the officer who arrested him. >> reporter: scotty scheffler, the number one-ranked golfer in the world, teeing off in ft. worth. while back in louisville, kentucky, police released new video of his early morning arrest before the second round of the pga championship on friday. these silent images show scheffler's car, apparently being stopped by a police officer, who makes contact with it. an unrelated fatal collision had taken place earlier. traffic was blocked and scheffler was trying to get to the country club. police say this video is moments after an alleged assault took place against a detective, according to the arrest report, the golf pro tried to drive around traffic and was told to stop by police. it says scheffler refused to comply and accelerated forward,

dragging a detective to the ground. that moment was not captured in the video. according to police, the detective suffered from pain, swelling and abrasions, but the incident was blocked by a bus. and he did not have his body camera on. >> right now, right no announced the detective has been reprimanded for not turning on his camera. he has been disciplined six times, including two suspensions. as for scheffler, his attorney responding to the video. >> all the evidence continues to come out, just continues to support what scottie said all along, this was a chaotic situation and miscommunication. >> reporter: the golfer spoke out the day of his arrest. >> can't comment on any specifics, but my situation will be handled. it was just a big misundersanding. >> reporter: scheffler is facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer and reckless driving. his lawyer says he will plead not guilty at the arraignment on
