terror as shots are fired at a high school graduation. the condition of those victims and the two detained overnight. we all are impacted by racism and
5:01 am
harms everyone. as california faces a nursing shortage, a new documentary sheds light on the impact racism is having on the profession. we take a closer look at the changes some say must happen to provide a safe and healthy work space. plus holiday road travel. the rush is on as millions hit the road for the memorial day weekend ahead. what you need to keep in mind as you prepare to head out. this is today in the bay good friday morning, 5:00 on the nose. i'm kira klapper laura garcia is off, and i'm marcus washington. want to get to cinthia pimentel right now? she is tracking that holiday weekend forecast. a lot of folks probably sleeping in this morning. well, that's some good news there. but we do have a little bit of some speed bumps as we go on into planning that holiday weekend. i'll get to that in just a second. overall, our temperatures starting off in
5:02 am
the 50s, a few clouds through san jose patchy clouds and some low fog through san francisco. and here it is. this is what's going to make the start of our long holiday weekend just a little bit bumpy. we have a system up to the pacific northwest. it's going to drop into the bay area. so what does that mean. it's going to be sweater weather as we transition into what's supposed to be the unofficial start of summer, it's going to be a little bit bumpy. we're also going to be tracking that may gray as we go on into our saturday, but then on into sunday and monday, i think people will be a little bit happier with me as we go on and see some gradual warming and some sunshine into next week. we'll talk about that in just a second. but mike, you're tracking some work on the golden gate bridge. yeah, these folks are working. i'm just looking at them, work watching them. that's what i do. and we're looking over toward the overnight work, though, down to one lane north bound 101 across the golden gate bridge, still down to one lane. looks like that crews should be getting ready to clear the southbound side. i believe they have cleared just before you get to the bridge as well. so that would be some slowing just off of highway one there. everything
5:03 am
else looks very nice right now. an easier drive expected today because a lot of folks, i think left the area yesterday. there's some wind that shows up with this light yellow here. note that in patches, but also note how light the altamont pass is. things are moving pretty smoothly. we will talk about anywhere you have to watch. oh, there's a new crash. i will check that out. just off the castro valley. y back to you. thanks, mike. developing this morning, two people are injured after a graduation ends in gunfire. it happened last night in oakland turning what was supposed to be a night of celebration into chaos. police now have people in custody, but their connection to what happened is still unclear today in the base. kris sanchez live this morning. and chris, what do we know? well, this is not the kind of night that the folks at skyline high school were supposed to have last night, graduation night, and it was supposed to be a celebration and it turned into utter chaos. and really, i mean, some horror there. now, overnight, oakland police did update us on their investigation. this is from the
5:04 am
press conference. they said that the shooting happened inside the north part of the school and appeared to be some sort of dispute. now, while the victims are said to be adults, we have not yet been able to clarify whether they were students and adults. now, last night, witnesses told us there were people running all around in every direction as this was happening, oakland police said they had help from the chp to set up a perimeter and to help people get away from the scene as safely as possible. so no one was injured trying to leave a graduate said. this happened right after the ceremony ended when people were taking pictures and hoped to start celebrating. you know, we heard gunshots and we thought it was fireworks at first, but it was gunshots. now oakland police tell us they do have two people in custody. they detained two people and are questioning them. however, in that press conference late, late last night, they also said that
5:05 am
this is a very preliminary investigation, and they are trying to identify anybody who might have been responsible for this in the east bay. kris sanchez today in the bay hopefully they have help finding those people. chris, thanks so much. now, we will continue to follow this story both on air as well as online. min a great resource is our nbc bay area app. make sure you download it. it is free and you can get that in your local app store. new overnight. the bodies of three hostages killed by hamas have been recovered in gaza. the families have been notified. the israeli army says the trio was killed in the attacks back on october seventh. hamas led militants killed about 1200 people, many civilians, and abducted about 250 others on that day. about half of those hostages have since been freed. well abortion providers in arizona can perform the procedure in california at least through the end of november. governor gavin newsom signed a new measure into law just yesterday. it says that it's in
5:06 am
response to the arizona supreme court ruling, which enables enforcement of the near-total ban on abortion in arizona. it should be noticed, it should be noted. i should say that that decision will not take effect until september. meanwhile arizona's governor signed the repeal of those abortion restrictions earlier this month. however, it is not expected to go into effect until 90 days after state lawmakers in their current session, which will likely come in july. california is facing a shortage of about 36,000 licensed nurses. it's been building for decades and made worse by covid. but there's another factor which might be forcing nurses from the profession racism. a new documentary called everybody's work healing what hurts us all explores nurses experiences with racism, from patients to colleagues and within the hospital system. the head of one school of nursing tells us the
5:07 am
costs of not addressing the issue are too high. it harms the patients, right? so at the patient level, it harms the system. so we have the system level. we have people leaving the profession. the increase in turnover, increase errors when you're stressed. we see it at the provider level again with the burnout and moral distress and all of this combined is just contributing to patient outcomes . beard went on to tell us that nurses from minority groups are leaving the profession at twice the rate of their white counterparts, accelerating the nursing shortage we're already experiencing. well, turning now to late night move. this is in antioch to strip the title of board president from the school district trustee. that board president says it's an attempt to silence him for holding the district and the superintendent accountable for how they're handling worker bullying complaints, given the clear
5:08 am
violation of the board policies and protocols, i'm calling for a censure resolution to be included in next month's governing board meeting and to add a discussion item to consider the potential removal of board president hernandez from a position as president. now, that motion follows our investigative units report just last month, where several workers accused the district's maintenance director of bullying, they filed complaints against ken turnage with the district. the workers believe that the superintendent turned a blind eye because she's close friends with turnage. she has not responded to that claim. board president antonio hernandez called for her resignation. now last night, board trustee mary rocha accused hernandez of putting the district's reputation in jeopardy with his public criticism of board president hernandez behavior is disrespectful and flies in the face of our board policies. the system, the school district, people. anyone can tell me what i should or shouldn't do, but
5:09 am
the only thing i know, truthfully in my heart is that the way to reach unity is by doing what i know is right for our employees and our students. the board members will discuss removing hernandez as president at their june 26th meeting last night. they also decided to consider another third party investigation into how the district as a whole is handling the employee concerns. now to a new housing option opening today for families trying to make it in the bay. leaders are holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new apartment complex called gateway rising. it's on willow road in menlo park. it will offer 140 affordable housing units, more than half will be filled by the people who were originally displaced during renovations. let's take a live look over at sjc. this is where memorial day travel is underway now. today is expected to be the busiest day when it comes to air travel. tsa estimates nearly 3 million passengers are expected to pass through airport
5:10 am
checkpoints. now, the number of travelers is expected to rival the number set on sunday after thanksgiving last year, we had family come in last night from austin, texas, where it's like a thousand degrees right now, so they were actually relieved to come to our cool down. cinthia pimentel is here now in for carrie with a look at that cool down right. we saw lots of people going to other places. the weather can be kind of dicey as you start to make your way east, but here in the bay area people might also be arriving for what is the last day of the graduations down here in san jose. we are starting off with a mix of some low clouds, temperatures in the 50s, and it's going to be a struggle to actually warm up today. so if you're abuela is coming, you might need to give her a blanket as she goes out and celebrates your grand moment. overall, we are going to be looking at a more gusty day today. it's going to pick up maybe your allergies too, and we're going to transition into a bit of a cooler start to our holiday weekend that may gray is going to stick around and then as we go on into next week, here's
5:11 am
where the good news lies. we're going to be looking at some more seasonable temperatures actually starting to feel like that unofficial start of summer. so i'll get you a look at all those temperatures coming up in a little bit. but mike has a look at where you can find those cheaper gas prices. well, it is coming. we got to fill up with gas because we don't want to make her push the car again. no i'm kidding. we're looking at san jose. quick check. shows us quick serve as the city's lowest with 465 on alum rock avenue. next year in the middle. alameda county usually has some of the bay's lowest prices. and it does. but we're checking castro valley, where it's not quite so low. 475 at arco on castro valley boulevard. and then the last number here is in the north bay, larkspur, as low as 479 at fuel, 24 seven on redwood highway, gasbuddy.com will be your buddy all weekend. make sure you check those prices and report them on the roadways we're reporting. not much. we do follow up on the crash that did pop up right here on the grid, but it actually was something that's been in the grid southbound 880 right around winton. we don't have a major issue. it's just a long standing vehicle that was over on the
5:12 am
shoulder. i think everything is finished. chp is just doing some paperwork over on 880, itself a very light volume of traffic. right now, we expect traffic to have its typical spots for congestion. maybe a little lighter though. back to you. i like the little lighter. yeah definitely. thanks, mike. it is 11 past the hour right now. a big game changer for college athletes ahead on today in the bay. the billion dollar ncaa settlement and the impact it will have not only on current but former college athletes and quite an interesting development in that whole scarlett johansson. her controversy. we'll bring you up to speed coming up. and if you're one of the millions hitting the road this weekend, we do have some tips. you should keep in mind some simple checks you need to think about before you head out. you want to know what they are? well, stick around just a few. we

we're going to start our temperatures in the 50s with a mix of some low clouds, more sunshine by the middle of the day, but then into the afternoon it's going to turn windy and we'll see a bit of a cool weekend start. i'll show you the full microclimate forecast coming up in a little bit, and we're showing you the full access for the northbound lanes of the golden gate bridge. although i haven't seen cars in the last couple of minutes here. and hopefully a quick break as they cleared those vehicles, we watch that were working on the northbound side overnight should be clearing. i'm trying to stall

for a second. we'll make sure we have those northbound roads open. i think we do. scott, i didn't hear about any closures. we'll follow up. yeah, i yield my time from for the gentleman from northern california. good morning and very happy friday to you. interesting numbers on the board today. the dow had one of its toughest days. i mean, look at that. in more than a year as bonds rose, expect mortgage rates to rise as well. boeing down big as that company says manufacturing delays will continue. nvidia meanwhile look at that picked up all that good news up better than 9% elon musk denying a report by bloomberg that it will allow employees to sell stock privately. the tender offer, as it's called, would value space at 200 billion. now, past lessons tell us when a reputable news agency says one thing and elon musk says another. in the end, the news agency often ends up being right. san francisco based glassdoor, that company that rates other companies as best

5:18 am
movie. her when they put it all together, sam altman says. the movie where she plays a ai voice, is his favorite of all time. this has been one of those controversies where you see both sides. i mean, somebody says, i don't want to do this, and they find somebody else to do it instead. on the other hand, hey, they sound like similar people and they got somebody else. yeah, exactly. and the personality came through, too. i think that was important to chatgpt beyond the voice is just the sort of flirty, silly. yeah, yeah. all right. scott, thank you. you bet. new this morning, a landmark agreement, which should pave the way for more income for college athletes. the so-called power five conferences have now signed off on a massive antitrust settlement. it includes a future revenue sharing plan allowing up to $21 million for athletes at each power five school. this is separate from the so-called name, image and likeness, or nil deals. it also includes nearly $3 billion in back pay owed to former division one athletes
5:19 am
over nearly the past decade. the revenue sharing plan launches in fall 2025. well now to a live look across the bay area this morning. traffic is moving smoothly now. mike will have a closer look at that in just a moment, but first, want to remind you if you're heading out this holiday weekend, chp will begin a memorial day weekend statewide maximum enforcement period. it will get underway in less than an hour, and if you are heading out for that long road trip this memorial day holiday weekend, here are some maintenance tips to keep in mind before you pull out the driveway, especially if you're in your own car. make sure the tires aren't worn and they are properly inflated. that's only really going to be not just for safety, but it helps with gas mileage. look for those leaks underneath your vehicle because that could be a sign something's going wrong. and we actually spoke with an auto repair expert who tells us that this mistake is drivers. you see that often assuming things are fine because they don't currently notice an issue, for an example there, the
5:20 am
battery. most people never test their battery or get it checked out. they keep driving the vehicle until it finally just doesn't start, and then they go, oh my battery is bad. well, if you're heading out of town and you stop to get gas and you come back out of the gas station in your car doesn't start. you have now found out that your battery is bad and you and you see the corrosion on it too, right? look most car parts stores, they're going to actually be able to test your car battery for free while your vehicle is parked in their lot. so it's good to do maintenance. yeah, absolutely. all right. at 519, a live look at the full moon this morning. the full flower moon. this is from fremont. our photographer jesse giving us this beautiful shot. this morning. this is the final full moon of spring. yeah shouldn't have showed you marcus, teen wolf. yeah not a teen anymore, but it represents all the flowers and bloom and stuff, so it's a really pretty significance there. and we can
5:21 am
see it. that's a nice, clear start there in fremont. other places are starting with some patchy clouds, but some places through the rest of the country are actually seeing some severe weather. so parts of the upper midwest down into dallas, arkansas, and it will eventually push on east. no delays right now to let you know of, but those could certainly change as we go through the morning as far as bringing it back here to the bay area you're going to notice a major cooldown that will continue today and into tomorrow. those temperatures are going to drop maybe 5 to 10 degrees, and we're going to turn things windy into this afternoon, which is going to just make it a little bit hard to make those weekend plans. at first. our temperatures for san francisco into the 59 degrees 64 in oakland, we'll do 66 down here in san jose and just a few spots that will be a little warm. mild 71 out in napa for the start of bottle rock. but it's going to turn gusty as we go on into the afternoon. we're going to see mainly out towards the coast, 25 to 30 mile an hour wind gusts, possibly up to 45, and it should continue for just
5:22 am
about everyone else. so a bit of a wind down into the weekend. but then we should see some better weather ahead into our memorial day weekend. so it's going to be a little bit of a speedy bump to get there. but by tomorrow we see temperatures still in those upper 60s. but by sunday, more of that sunshine and temperatures actually rebounding a little bit. and as we go on into our holiday monday inland, that's where you want to be to enjoy those nice barbecues and celebrate the servicemen and women out there. as far as our 7-day forecast goes for our inland valleys, again, 60 to start off the weekend, transitioning to 70s and then some 80s by the middle of the week. that will be nice and san francisco will be nice and cool for those visitors that are coming in, remember to tell them to bring a jacket and watch for carol the fog. mike, you're watching for the golden gate bridge. yeah, i'm watching here because there i wanted to assure folks in the northbound lanes were open because i did see vehicles going. we don't see carl right now, but as cynthia says, we'll watch out because carl well, hangs out there. we know that the travel around the area should start to build, but
5:23 am
so far nothing major looking up here. yeah. we don't have any slowing for 37. that's good news. that already indicates a lighter friday. we'll see if it's lighter than your light friday traffic as we go around the bay. a lot of folks i think, left town or are preparing with guests coming into town south bay. no problem. a little bit of wind showing up over in the brentwood discovery bay area, and no real warnings from chp and great drives. look, vasco is at its minimum back to you. all right. thanks, mike. now next on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. the state gave many of us free money a year and a half ago. well, next week the state's going to start taking back some of what families didn't spend. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. tonight we're going to help
