6:01 am
the skies. this is today in the bay good morning. thank you so much for starting your friday with us. i'm kira klapper in for laura and i'm marcus washington. of course we're going to get a look at that commute. a lot of folks are going to hit the road today. mike has that for us. but first let's talk about that forecast cynthia. and this morning and you know what i walked outside this morning and i was like, you know, it's a little bit i determine the weather when i walk outside. i was like, it's a little bit chilly this morning. it was a little bit cooler on the heater because, you know, that would have kept you nice and cozy on your drive. i would have, but yeah, you are right about that. we are off to a chillier start. look at sfo, we have some fog, some drizzle also, and the winds out of the west around 16 miles an hour. i showed you this one a couple of minutes ago. walnut creek also breezy on there. we are in for some changes. 40s in santa rosa with a bit of those patchy clouds and down in san jose we start our friday at 53 degrees. it is a weak cold front
6:02 am
that's coming into the bay area, so that's why you'll notice the temperatures dropping today and tomorrow. our temperatures in san jose throughout the day only in the 60s with the mix of sun and clouds, i've got the full microclimate forecast to help you plan that weekend, but mike is helping you plan your commute around the san mateo bridge. what's going on? well, we know that westbound will typically show the build behind me here, but i'm watching eastbound reports of a roll of carpet that were on the roadway. and that's never good, especially when they're restricted lanes. but we haven't seen any major problems. a smooth drive eastbound keep our eyes on things. we typically expect to see some slowing even on a friday on the nimitz, but not there today. lighter volume, i think, for the early commute, which is what we're looking at. i think things will really kick in midday and into the evening as folks tend to head out or across town. we're looking at the clearing for the bay bridge. disabled vehicle might still have activity near treasure island, but very little slowing for 37. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well developing this morning, two people are injured after a graduation of gunfire there. it happened last night in oakland, turning that night of celebration into chaos.
6:03 am
police now do have people in custody, but their connection to what happened is unclear. today in the bay's kris sanchez is live this morning. kris, i understand you. you've learned some information. yes, we did get a late night update from oakland police. we know that the two people who were shot and sent to the hospital, they are in stable condition. but as you mentioned, there are several people detained. we just don't know who they are and what the motivation for the shooting might have been overnight. oakland police did give us a few a bit more information, saying that the shooting happened inside the school in the north part of the school, and appeared to have started with some sort of dispute. now, while the victims are said to be adults, we have not been able to clarify whether they were young adults and whether they were students. last night, witnesses told us there were people running in all directions once that gunfire happened, oakland police did have help setting up a perimeter and helping the crowd get away
6:04 am
from the area from the chp, so no one was injured trying to leave. now, a graduate told us that it happened right after the ceremony ended, when families were coming together to try to take pictures and enjoy this celebration. you know, we hear gunshots and we always thought it was fireworks at first, but it was gunshots. so we are trying to get more information from oakland police. we know that there is a new police chief. we'll see if he has. you know, anything to say about this? it is a really difficult time. the school is now clear, so it is safe for people to return there. but definitely not what people wanted on a night that was supposed to be all about those graduates. well, to bring you more information as soon as we get it in the east bay. kris sanchez. today in the bay. it's just so sad. i mean, a day of celebration, all the hard work for those students and ending like that. such a shame. chris, thank you. and we feel for them. yeah. yeah, indeed.
6:05 am
chris. thank you. new overnight. the bodies of three hostages killed by hamas have been recovered from gaza seven months after they died. the israeli army says the trio was killed in the attacks back on october seventh. their families have been notified. hamas led militants killed about 1200 people, many were civilians and they abducted about 250 others on that day. just about half of those hostages have been freed. back in the us, new tensions at ucla after a protest by palestinian supporters shut down campus yesterday, police quickly got involved and cleared a pop up encampment. officers are now increasing their patrols. this as ucla s chancellor, testified before a house committee over the school's response to prior protests that got out of hand. police made 200 arrests while breaking up a large encampment earlier this month, and that followed violent clashes between supporters on both sides as far
6:06 am
as pro-palestinian demonstrations here at bay area universities, the mercury news is reporting an encampment down at san jose state earlier this week, following an agreement between the school and those protesters is now closed. and last week, ucsf protesters disbanded their tents following a similar meeting. also last week, san francisco state protesters agreed to move their encampment in stages after receiving some concessions from administrators. as stanford's encampment is still intact on that campus. 12 arrests were made last week at uc berkeley after protesters occupied a school owned building there. well, new at six, the 40 niners and the city of santa clara have apparently buried the hatchet in their long standing legal battles over levi's stadium. the sides announced a settlement in the last of a series of disputes. now, some of it surrounds allegations the team has not always paid its share of revenue from the concerts and other non-football events. the city says that the deal includes

an additional $20 million for santa clara over the next two years, and it also includes a new $4 surcharge for all non nfl events. let's take a live look outside across the bay area. traffic moving smoothly this morning. mike will have a closer look at that for you in just a moment. but i want to remind you for anyone heading out for the holidays, chp will begin memorial day weekend statewide maximum enforcement period starting right now. now, if you are heading out on that long road trip this memorial day weekend, here are some maintenance tips you need to keep in mind. so as you pull out the driveway, make sure you've already done these things. check your tire pressure. you want to make sure the tire has enough air as well. it's not worn out. there's not only the safety issue we're talking about here, but it also is going to help you with gas mileage and look for any leaks underneath that vehicle. that could actually be a sign something is wrong. we spoke with an auto repair expert who tells us this is a mistake drivers often make. assuming things are fine because they

don't currently notice an issue, for an example there, the battery may. most people never test their battery or get it checked out. they keep driving the vehicle until it finally just doesn't start, and then they go, oh my battery is bad. well if you're heading out of town and you stop to get gas and you come back out of the gas station in your car doesn't start, you have now found out that your battery is bad. yeah and you open up and you see the corrosion around there happened to me when i first started driving, but i learned quickly. all right, look, most car parts stores, they will test your battery for free while your vehicle is parked in their lot. so that's just a good reminder for you if you're not driving but flying, here's a live look at sjc, where today is expected to be the busiest day of the holiday weekend. when it comes to travel, the tsa estimates nearly 3 million passengers are expected to pass through airport checkpoints today. the number of travelers is expected to rival the record, set on the sunday after thanksgiving of last year.

and i was telling you guys that my family came into town from texas yesterday where it's 99, feels like 100. okay. and they were thrilled with our cool down that they were that natural ac just putting in work here in the bay area. now listen, as people do want to go out towards different parts of the country, i want you to be prepared. we have some severe weather to actually talk about and warn you if you see those delays starting to pop up on your flights, especially up towards parts of the midwest, we already have some severe thunderstorm alerts going in through parts of chicago. and this isn't just a midwest thing. it's stretching down into parts of dallas as well, and it will continue to push on east. so just be mindful of that as you make your way into the airport and navigate around to make it to your flight. back here at home, we are going to also watch for those temperatures dropping today actually becoming pretty windy and chilly to wind down on our long weekend. get started to our holiday weekend that may. gray will continue for tomorrow,

actually bringing us a chance of some drizzle out near the coast. struggling to clear on out, but with the sunshine will eventually come. look it as we go on into sunday and monday. some gradual warming and some sunshine is ahead, so i'll walk you through the full microclimate forecast coming up. but mike is helping you hit the roads and find those cheaper gas prices. well, cynthia, now kira family likes the weather out here from texas, but i wonder how they like those gas prices compared to. yeah, there we go looking at san jose. quick check shows. quick serve as the city's lowest with 465 on allen rock avenue. alameda county has the middle number here. some of the bay's lowest prices are typically in alameda county, but we're checking castro valley. not quite the case. it's only down to 475 at arco on castro valley boulevard, and larkspur's low is 479. in the north bay fuel 24 seven on redwood highway. check everything and report everything here gasbuddy.com. what we're using today, the roadways are moving very smoothly because we do have a lighter early commute. we expect volume to really build up midday. highway 37 really shows the only slowing aside from the bay bridge, which is starting to

sunday, monday. yeah. all of these water stories kind of kind of odd. but you know what though? okay. i used to perform summertime for our comedy group comedy sports. still active, family friendly, so we could have the kids there too. and during the summer, we would have welcomed a water park during the hotter months. yeah. time to the summer. yeah, yeah. we don't get our warm temperatures until the end of summer going into fall, so maybe today and tomorrow is the day to find alternate activities to the pool. but congratulations to them as we make our plan here in gilroy. we are looking at the may gray this morning. it should max out by the time that we get into lunchtime. but temperatures there only in the 60s. it's actually going to turn very gusty later on this afternoon as we look at a weak cold front coming into the bay area. no rain associated with this, but definitely some strong winds through san francisco out towards the livermore pass and parts of bodega bay. as we go on into tomorrow, i see them sticking around but a little bit
6:21 am
breezier compared to some gusty winds. our temperatures for today are actually going to remain below average. we're looking at 57 and half moon bay, low 60s bayshore from oakland down into fremont. a few 70s make it on the map up in santa rosa, concord, but some 66 degrees down here in san jose. so a bit of a speedy bump to our long holiday weekend. but i promise you that it will get better tomorrow. we have some may gray to start our morning, so don't be discouraged. this will mix out as we go on into the second half of the morning and into the afternoon. still some sweater weather conditions out there 68 in novato, 64 in hayward and will only do 69 degrees down here in los gatos. but i promise you, temperatures will rebound as we go on into sunday. we're looking at more 70s popping up through the north bay, the east bay hills, san jose and some upper 60s for san mateo. actually, notice what's going to happen over the next couple of days. yes, it's a little bit of a speedy bump as we go on into friday and saturday, but making those plans

for memorial day, we start to go up into the mid 70s for walnut creek and actually continue to go up on this roller coaster as we go on into wednesday, thursday, friday. so that's going to be the return of those 80s. of course, making it hard to go to work with all of that sunshine, but you'll get through it. overall, our 7-day forecast in san francisco, those breezy winds, chilly temperatures at times, but we start to warm things up as we go on into the second half of the week. in those upper 60s and our inland valleys, 60 to 70 to start our next work week to mid 80s. by the time that we get on into next thursday. mike, how's it going in the bay bridge? you know what we expected the backup to build a bit. it has spread out to all the lanes, but it was built up to a back here about mid parking lot. and then it started to ease once again. lighter traffic continues approaching the bay bridge on the span. the slowdown continues to improve from the earlier incident. and so that's great news. we do have this volume starting to build now through fremont, heading into the south bay. a little breeze there that might be more of a factor over

near the altamont pass, but no advisories for wind, no problems. at least we're looking at highway 37 with a mild build. there is an incident near the maze. we'll check on that. but again, the recovery there for the bay bridge and the rest of the bay moving nicely, including that roller carpet we're watching eastbound on san mateo. back to you. all right. looks good. all that green? yeah mike. thanks. next on today in the bay. nbc bay area response. the state gave many of us free money a year and a half ago. well, next week the state's going to start taking back some of what families didn't spend. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. tonight we're going to lp youhe

have them. as we go on into tomorrow, we also look at a cool down temperatures only in the upper 60s, but by sunday they should rebound and actually get warmer over the next couple of days. so the good news there, if you can extend your long weekend in napa as far as going out to foodie land tonight at the cow palace, bring a couple of jackets and some blankets. it's going to get gusty out there into the afternoon and temperatures only in the mid 50s. cooling down and becoming cloudy later on. tonight we're going to stick in san francisco and go out to carnival tomorrow and on sunday in the mission district. what a good time! the clouds and the cool temperatures are not going to get in the way of people celebrating all of that beautiful latin culture and looking ahead to our three day outlook for our inland valleys. memorial day weekend of course, honoring our service members, we're going to be looking at some cool may gray conditions for tomorrow. but by sunday and on into monday, if you're looking for that warmth and feeling like the unofficial start of summer, that's

definitely where you'll find it. as temperatures go back up into those upper 70s mike, you're looking at a different traffic patterns for today. what's up? well, you know it's the pre holiday. and every time we have a pre three day holiday we tend to see lighter traffic. but we did see the back of forming at the toll plaza. it's so light. how light is it that we have. once the backup formed it actually had a chance to clear. that's how light the traffic flow is across the span of nice drive, but the metering lights are still active. a little more build over at the richmond bridge. there's 37 highway four. so very light flow of traffic. now we're talking about bottle rock up here. highway 29 one 2112. all going to see a lot of traffic in this area. ginger outlined a lot of local closures. highway 37, all that roadwork is gone. it's cleared up. they finished the last of the project. and so that's great news. before bottle rock brought the crowds, we're looking at the south bay. remember we still have another day full of graduations around san jose state. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. the splash brothers facing an uncertain future. say it ain't so. up next, new talk about where clay

the bill that would have strengthened our borders and scott mcgrew is here. when you look at the voting record, it does seem safe to say, i think it's perfectly safe to say it. senate republicans voted against a bill some of their own party members wrote. it was defeated in the senate for a second time on thursday. the bill would have allowed the president and future presidents to shut the border down. if a certain number of people crossed. that overwhelmed the system. a bill that was supported by the border patrol union. but it failed to get the votes to move forward, as every republican and eight democrats voted against it. this is the same bill the republicans were insisting on insisting on as a bargaining chip to allow more funding for ukraine, only to change their minds the first time when donald trump said he publicly wanted the border crisis to remain a political issue and urged his party members not to pass it.

president biden responded to this latest failure to take action in a written statement, congressional republicans, he said, do not care about securing the border or fixing america's broken immigration system. if they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history. president biden met with and held a state dinner for the president of kenya. biden said he would work with congress to designate kenya as the country's first major non-nato ally. kenya has its work cut out for it. it's going to send troops thousands of miles away to haiti, try to get that island back under control. haiti has no functional government. armed gangs are running amok. disease starvation, widespread. the us and the un have both tried and failed in haiti. moments ago, the international court of justice, which israel is a member, ruled israel must halt its offensive in rafah. the united nations court says it's not convinced the evacuation of civilians was sufficient and
